On the November 30 edition of CBS' Face the Nation, while discussing President-elect Barack Obama's expected nomination of Sen. Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, Washington Post assistant managing editor Bob Woodward remarked of Clinton: "She never goes away, she and her husband." Woodward then added: "It's an amazing national security team that Obama appears to have selected. It's kind of like 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears.' You've got too cool, which might be -- or at least appropriately cool -- General [James] Jones as the national security adviser; [Defense Secretary Robert] Gates is kind of just right, in the middle; and Hillary Clinton, hot." He continued: "This is going to be a whole new center of gravity for the news media, for the world. My assessment -- without having any knowledge, really -- is that the economists and the economic team around Obama convinced him that the economic crisis is so deep and going to require so much time, go ahead and give Hillary and Bill the world."

From the November 30 edition of CBS' Face the Nation:

BOB SCHIEFFER (host): Bob Woodward, the president, if all goes as expected, at 10:50 Eastern Time tomorrow will announce his new national security team, to be headed by Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state.

WOODWARD: She never goes away, she and her husband. It's an amazing national security team that Obama appears to have selected. It's kind of like "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." You've got too cool, which might be -- or at least appropriately cool -- General Jones as the national security adviser; Gates is kind of just right, in the middle; and Hillary Clinton, hot.

This is going to be a whole new center of gravity for the news media, for the world. My assessment -- without having any knowledge, really -- is that the economists and the economic team around Obama convinced him that the economic crisis is so deep and going to require so much time, go ahead and give Hillary and Bill the world.

She never goes away? Bill never goes away? Let's review this shall we? First, Bill is a former President, who, as it turns out, the majority of the country thought did a pretty good job while he was in office, going back and reviewig his approval ratings when he left office. So that tells me that he has credibility within the democratic party, which makes sense, seeing as, once again, he is a former President, and the last democrat to hold said office. And again, he did a pretty decent job of it. Hillary Clinton is a Senator, which is a pretty good gig if you can get it. She is a seated Senator, and former Presidential candidate, who has a lot of people behind her. I mean, heck, why don't these 2 just go away because you know, a lot of people believe in them, and think that they're good people, who have either done a good job in the past, or are doing a good job now (Clinton as Senator, and Bill as fundraiser, and philanthropist). Jeez, I can't imagine why 2 of the most prominent democrats in the country just don't go away...

Listening to the R side of the royal family complaining about what the President-elect was planning to do was such enjoynment that I actually missed a football game. The same old, tired complaints about how Obama was not doing what THEY thought best..It was such a kick to keep reminding them that the "Democrat Party", a phrase they loved to use, was now in charge.

The thrill of so much fun made the fried bologna skins, the main course, taste better than usual. And those potato skins were also excellent. Can't wait until the Christmas gathering so that I can remind Princess Grandma that O'Reilly is a jerk and cannot be trusted.

If appointing someone U.S. Secretary of State is (in bob woodward's words) "giving them the world", then I guess Condoleeza Rice has been given and presently holds the world too, right? And Colin Powell, he formerly was "given the world" also, right?

Ye gads! What a bizarre and fictional view of the world and the U.S. Government bob woodward expresses... I guess chasing folks around and getting to the bottom of the Watergate break-in, was never an indication of an understanding of the world and the functions of the U.S. Government, and was never enough mental activity either, to prevent the guy's brain from rotting and softening with age.

      this is the crux:

"My assessment -- without having any knowledge, really -- "

like all the other "village people",  mr. woodward,  after admitting he has no clue what he's talking about,  proceeds to opine,  and no one says anything.  at that point,  he should have been stopped and smacked around.  instead,  he's given a podium to expound on that which he knows nothing about.

who do i have to bl*w to get an easy,  and well paying,  gig like that?

Hmmm.... isn't this the same Bob Woodward that exposed the disaster known as the Nixon Watergate scandal with Carl Bernstein? Whatever happened to that Bob Woodward? I read his book on the Bush regime and was kind of impressed, but not as much as I would have liked... If the old Bob from 70's would come back to reality... he'd remember that the Clinton's were/are hated by that which he has become part of... and liked by everyone else!

Hmmm... how about money, moolah, success, the craving for respectability and approval, for starters....? These kind of things are VERY important to some people on the Eastern Seaboard.

Plus, the natural deteriorating effect of age... Don't forget, too, that Woodward was the WASP, the conservative. It was Bernstein who was the 'good' guy, the progressive.

But that's exactly the point. We're NOT getting the Clinton administration back, we're getting the Obama administration. If that was the case, then with George W. Bush, we would have had a combination of Nixon, Reagan, George HW Bush administrations, but instead, we got a disaster all of its own making.

See, here's the thing. It's not the Clinton administration. It will be the Obama administration, and while he will take counsel, and advice, ultimately, he, like W before him, will be the "decider". That's why it's different.

Aside from that, Obama talked about change, change from Bush.

First of all, what did they lie about? Excluding Lewinsky, and the dodging sniper fir thing, you've got nothing. This makes them the biggest liars in political history? You can't be serious? Oh, then again, I'm sure that you are.

Why as a married couple do they embody all that is wrong with America? Let's see. They have a sex scandal to deal with, very publicly, during the time that Clinton is President. Hillary thinks about divorcing him, they don't. They reconcile, and now their marriage is stronger than ever. So what is wrong with that? Unless of course you don't think "for better or for worse" is something that married couples should abide by. Sure, he embaressed his wife and kid during this time, and I can't disagree with that. Why does NOW support him? Because he believes in what they stand for. It's got nothing to do with his personal life. It's funny that you proclaim that liberals have no core values, and yet, Bill and Hillary are still married, they raised an incredible daughter who is smart, and making waves in the world, you have Bill taking on philanthropy throughout the world battling things that are worth battling, they attended church together almost every weekend when he was President, and somehow, the Clinton's have no core values? How do you come up with this stuff?

Let's see, under Clinton we never lost any US soldiers to hostile action. Under Bush we've lost how many soliders? How many civilians due to hostile action? A lot is the answer you're looking for.

Under Clinton, the US enjoyed a rousing economy. Under Bush? Eh, not so much...

Clinton never sold arms to terrorists. Under Reagan, he did. Not to mention sanctioning death squads in Central America, letting terrorists decide when we were going to pull out of Lebannon, meeting and selling biological and chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein. Seems as though, Clinton didn't do any of those things.

Or, do you live in a world where all of the bad things that happened under republican Presidents were somehow the fault of other democrats?

The Clintons have a good image with the general population, ie, the majority of Americans. Look at Bill's approval ratings when he left office. Let's see, they were:

        • 65% approval rating, after he went through impeachment and the mud that was slung his way.

        Hillary's approval rating (current):

        • 72% approval rating from the voters in NY, that elected her to the Senate.

You don't use facts to back up your assertions very well do you?

Yes, because Bill was too much of a wimp to face the problem at hand.  So instead we lost solders sitting on their hands doing nothing. U.S.S. Cole, or how about the soldiers that lost their lives in Somilia?

OK, for some reason, I had forgotten about Somalia, and USS Cole. My apologies for those mistakes.

Oh, you do remember that Clinton did try to do something over in Bosnia, and what did he get? Pushback, and no support from the, yes, Republicans in Congress. He still did it, because it was right, and he didn't need the republicans to agree to it. You remember how your republican leadership decried the use of US troops in Bosnia, and over the skies of Bosnia don't you?

If you really want to know what happened, stop looking at silly websites like the one you've got listed, and read Ghost Wars as it pertains to terrorism, and how we got to 9/11, and what led us down that path. You might be enlightened, but I doubt it.

I'm pretty sure looking at your list of lies that Clinton spouted, that hardly any of those got, you know, 5000+ US soldiers killed. I'm just saying...

I agree with your post... accept for this one small part... Somalia... and while you are right that no other of our military died in actual action (accept Somalia)...that in no way injures your post.

My point is... when refuting rightwing lugnuts.... be sure to be precise on all the facts... of course... the soldiers/marines that died in Somalia died for a fairly good cause... Somalia was also not a war (excursion?) of made up reasons (like Iraq)... so perhaps the only thing you could have said differently was....

that no US military personal died in a mission that was not justified under Clinton where over 4000 have under Bush.... and you would still have been spot on!

I think it may have been Rush Limbaugh who pointed out that more had been killed in training accidents in WWII...then he went on to claim that Baghdad was no more dangerous than Detroit.  Of course, these were the same people who vilified Clinton for losing 18 Rangers.

See, the thing is, when the whacko wing nuts were trying to tell us that Detroit was more dangerous than Baghdad, what they didn't take into account was the fact that they weren't counting ALL deaths in the city for a certain month. As in, they weren't counting dead Iraqis and then taking a percentage of that.

What they were doing in their funny math, was taking dead American servicemen and women (God rest their souls), and then taking a percentage of those killed as compared to the entire population of Iraq (not just Baghdad), and then not counting civilians killed. They weren't even taking the death percentages based on US troops in country at the time.

I've had this stupid argument with about 100 different crazed people who still want to claim that walking down the street in Detroit is more dangerous than walking down the street in Baghdad.

It's a ridiculous argument to make. Case in point. I was listening to NPR this morning, and they were on a tour of a local shop area in Baghdad that was supposed to be "safe". They went into a kebab shop to get some lunch, talk to the locals, and what happened? Their car got blown up in the 40 minutes they were in the shop.

I'm pretty sure no matter where you go in Detroit, that's not going to happen. Your car might go missing, but someone isn't going to blow it up in front of you trying to kill you.

The only parts of your car that may get blown up in Detroit are the tires, and then, only if they're low on air.

And again, these are lies that are inconsequential. Tell me one thing in there that really made a difference about, well, anything.

Compare with, "Saddam is trying to gain yellow cake uranium to make an atomic bomb."

            Context my friend, context...

It never ceases to amaze me that the Troglodytes will trot out the "Clinton is a liar" mantra.... even after they saddled us with 8 years of the most dishonest and corrupt administration in recent history.

And you know what? If you dig enough, and parse enough of what ANYBODY says, we're all liars. It's the degree of lying. Am I going to stand here (or in this case, sit here), and say that Clinton (either of them) never lied? No, I honestly can't say that. Am I going to sit here and tell you that their lies were either "little white lies" or lies that didn't us to war? Yes, I am going to say that.

I'd be more than happy to tell you that everyone (not just politicians mind you, but EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US) is a liar at some point in time or another. It's the width and breadth of those lies that really count.

I got shot at while flying into Bosnia. Doesn't affect anyone except for the person who said it.

Saddam was trying to get yellow cake uranium. Affects, the world...

One would hope that the economists who are consulted make their assesments with knowledge.

My vote for who needs to go away are those who make assesment without knowledge, as Woodward has been doing for years.

Anyone have any idea what he means by hot, cool, just right? Sounds like a nifty insight except that it's meaningless. Rest of his comments are total bs, too.

Exactly, like when they were yelling and screaming about how Hillary was super ultra left wing liberal, except that she, and Obama, were not, and are not. They are both centrists, and far too moderate in my opinion. I would LOVE for them to both be as liberal as pundits claim that they are/were, because then, I would like them both even more.

I heard the exact same comment "they never go away" on Wolf Blitzer's CNN show by Jack Cafferty. I have heard similar disparaging comments about the Clintons by CNN morning anchors as well.
