Is NBC going to help Coulter sell this book?
SUMMARY: NBC has repeatedly provided Ann Coulter a platform to spew her inflammatory rhetoric even as NBC-affiliated hosts and anchors have expressed disapproval of her statements or criticized the media for promoting her. Coulter's latest book, Guilty, is rife with such inflammatory comments, including saying that the Democratic primaries were a contest of "Who's the Biggest Pussy?"; calling children whose parents divorce "future strippers" in a chapter titled "Victim of a Crime? Thank a Single Mother"; and calling former White House press secretary Scott McClellan "retarded." Nevertheless, Coulter has announced that she is scheduled to appear on Today on January 6.
As Media Matters for America has noted, author and syndicated columnist Ann Coulter recently announced that she is scheduled to appear on the January 6 broadcast of NBC's Today to promote the release of her new book, Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America, which Media Matters obtained in advance of its January 6 release. Media Matters has documented that NBC has repeatedly provided Coulter a platform to spew her inflammatory rhetoric even as NBC-affiliated hosts and anchors have expressed disapproval of her statements or criticized the media for promoting her. Coulter's latest book is rife with such inflammatory and offensive comments.
Examples of such comments from Guilty include the following:
- Coulter says the Democratic primaries were a contest of "Who's the Biggest Pussy?":
Liberals' hysterical obsession with the "Republican Attack Machine" turns Democratic primaries into a contest of: "Who's the Biggest Pussy?" Although I would have voted for "All of Them," inasmuch as none of the Democrats could face questions from Fox News's Brit Hume, the winner turned out to be [Barack] Obama. Hillary [Clinton] claimed to be a victim of Republicans, while Obama claimed to be a victim of Republicans, Hillary, and racists. [Page 79]
Coulter later suggests that Sen. John McCain should also be nominated for this contest:
Alas, despite liberals' terrific fear of John McCain and the Republican Attack Machine, evidently McCain was more afraid of the real attack machine: the mainstream media. He wasted no time in denouncing the North Carolina ad. Obeying the media's command that Republicans not mention any facts unfavorable to Obama, McCain said, "There's no place for that kind of campaigning, and the American people don't want it." He promptly fired off a letter to the North Carolina Republican Party presuming to tell them not to run the ad.
Say, is it too late to nominate someone else for that "Who's the Biggest Pussy" contest? [Page 88]
- Coulter calls children whose parents divorce "future strippers" in a chapter titled "Victim of a Crime? Thank a Single Mother":
In any event, divorced mothers should be called "divorced mothers," not "single mothers." We also have a term for the youngsters involved: "the children of divorce," or as I call them, "future strippers." It is a mark of how attractive it is to be a phony victim that divorcées will often claim to belong to the more disreputable category of "single mothers." [Page 36]
Later in the chapter, Coulter writes: "Single motherhood is like a farm team for future criminals and social outcasts." [Page 38]
- Coulter, discussing "Republican turncoats," remarks that "their gender always remains the same. They are women, not limited to the biological sense":
On the bright side, look at how low the mainstream media have had to stoop lately to find their Republican heretics. The most famous "former Republican" is Kevin Phillips, who attended Bronx High School of Science, Colgate University, the University of Edinburgh, and Harvard Law School. Even John Dean was at least a practicing lawyer. The 2008 version is Kathleen Parker, who went to Converse College and the University of San Francisco. The educational attainments of Republican turncoats may change, but curiously, their gender always remains the same. They are women, not limited to the biological sense. [Page 114]
- Coulter claims that Obama, actress Halle Berry, and musician Alicia Keys "race bait[ed] their way to success":
Even grifters know that to be embraced by the cool people in America, you must claim to be a victim, preferably abused by religious fundamentalists.
In a related phenomenon, various half-black celebrities insist on representing themselves simply as "black" -- the better to race-bait their way to success. Actress Halle Berry, singer Alicia Keys, and matinee idol Barack Obama were all abandoned by their black fathers and raised by their white mothers. But instead of seeing themselves as half-white, they prefer to see the glass as half-black. They all choose to identify with the fathers who ditched them, while insulting the women who struggled to raise them.
In 2002, Berry engaged in wild race-baiting to win her Oscar and then ate up most of the awards show with an interminable acceptance speech claiming that her award was "so much bigger than me." People who say "it's bigger than me" always mean it's just about them. During the 2008 campaign, Barack Obama repeatedly said the exact same thing: "This election is bigger than me." Would they be able to pawn off their personal victories as transformative events for the nation if they were not claiming to be doing it for the blacks? [Page 7]
- Coulter calls former White House press secretary Scott McClellan "retarded" after describing a fictional scene of "washed-up Republican functionaries like McClellan showing up in a basement office at NBC and announcing they want to be rewarded for snitching on a Republican":
The media accuse Republicans of playing dirty pool, but they turn to the retarded press secretary for an attack on his former boss. [Page 118]
- Coulter states that New York Times columnist Frank Rich "became qualified to comment on U.S. foreign policy, national security, and presidential politics after spending a childhood dancing his favorite numbers from Oklahoma! in his mother's panties":
Rich, who became qualified to comment on U.S. foreign policy, national security, and presidential politics after spending a childhood dancing his favorite numbers from Oklahoma! in his mother's panties and then spending twelve years reviewing theater for the New York Times, attacked [former Talon News "Washington Bureau Chief" Jeff] Gannon for not being a "real newsman." Not only that, but, Rich breathlessly reported, there were "embarrassing blogosphere revelations linking [Gannon] to sites like hotmilitarystud.com and to an apparently promising career as an X-rated $200-per-hour 'escort.' " In Rich's estimation, $200 an hour was way too much to pay a male escort who wasn't Latino. Now, if there's anybody in this world who knows what a real man is, it's Frank Rich. But as for knowing what a real newsman is, that's another story. [Page 198]
Coulter later wrote: "The entire scandal that Frank Rich complained was not getting enough attention was that Gannon was a gay Republican. (Because if there's one thing Frank Rich can't abide, it's a gay man who's too scared to come out of the closet)." [Page 200]
- Coulter calls Newsweek contributing editor Eleanor Clift a "braying left-wing slattern":
But according to [New York Times columnist Paul] Krugman the "pretty honest" Clinton administration was victimized by unfair news coverage. The only living human who might agree with that assessment is Bill Clinton, who derisively referred to Newsweek magazine as "the house organ of Paula Jones" -- an unfortunate use of "Paula Jones" and "organ" in the same sentence.
Yes, he was referring to the magazine that refused to report Paula Jones's accusations against Clinton for months, described Jones as a "dogpatch Madonna," killed Michael Isikoff's exclusive on the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and unaccountably employs braying left-wing slattern Eleanor Clift, who named Clinton the "Biggest Winner of the Year" for being "a colossus on the world stage" in 1999 -- the very year Clinton was impeached and the entire Supreme Court boycotted his State of the Union Address. [Page 193]
Coulter describes Code Pink co-founders Medea Benjamin and Jodie Evans as "storm troopers" and "satanic dervishes":
Why do Republicans never learn? They will never get credit for apologizing to the endless stream of fake liberal victims. Instead, everyone sees that Republicans are milquetoast sops. Republicans have turned themselves into such doormats that a major Obama fundraiser felt free to sneak into the Republican National Convention to disrupt Sarah Palin's speech -- and then portray herself as a victim of the Republicans for being asked to leave.
The storm troopers at the Republican National Convention were Jodie Evans, a major Obama fundraiser, and her fellow outside agitator, Medea Benjamin.
[...]
And Republicans fall for fake victims every time. Blake Hall, one of the Republican delegates who removed the screaming banshees, sent an e-mail to the Idaho Falls Post Register contritely explaining that the protesters had "violated convention rules by being in a place not permitted by their guest passes." He continued defensively, "They were asked to cease and they refused." And -- as Palin continued to try to speak over the disrupters -- they "continued their disorderly behavior at which point I was requested by the Sergeant at Arms and other deputies to assist in their removal." Not exactly Ronald Reagan saying, "I'm paying for this microphone!" Republicans are apologetic about not supinely turning over their convention to satanic dervishes. [Pages 177-178, 179]
- Discussing former Virginia Sen. George Allen's calling S.R. Sidarth -- a volunteer who was videotaping Allen for James Webb, Allen's Democratic opponent in 2006 -- "macaca," Coulter refers to Sidarth and other campaign trackers as "little Nazi block-watchers":
At one of his campaign speeches, Allen jokingly introduced a "tracker" from the campaign of his Democratic opponent, Jim Webb, to the audience. Trackers are little Nazi block-watchers, who follow a candidate around, recording everything he says -- and everything his audience says -- so the selectively edited videos can be posted online for ridicule. [Page 165]
Coulter makes several other references to the Nazis and the Holocaust in the book, including the following:
Not surprisingly, Hollywood has taken a leading role in portraying single mothers as victims, while relentlessly promoting promiscuity, single motherhood, prostitution, and divorce to the detriment of the most vulnerable members of society. But if anyone makes a peep of criticism, suddenly it's 1939 Germany and overpaid writers from Murphy Brown are the Jews. [Page 45]
The most amazing thing liberals have done is create the myth of a compliant right-wing media with Republicans badgering baffled reporters into attacking Democrats. It's so mad, it's brilliant. It's one kind of a lie to say the Holocaust was when the Swedes killed the Jews. But it's another kind of lie entirely to say the Holocaust was when the Jews killed the Nazis. Liberals have actually neutralized the incredible press orchestration of left-wing propaganda by acting as if they are the victims of the all-powerful Republican National Committee. [Page 110]
Even stupid people -- come to think of it, especially stupid people -- will always take the path of least resistance. The young, the stupid, and the weak are invariably impressed with authority figures. College students in Weimar Germany emulated their Nazi-sympathizing professors just as college students in modern America emulate their America-hating professors and the stupid and weak in society at large emulate the liberal establishment. [Page 112]

Pre-emptive strike:This is not a First Amendment issue. She has the right to say what she wants, but nobody is obligated to give her airtime.
"Pre-emptive strike:This is not a First Amendment issue. She has the right to say what she wants, but nobody is obligated to give her airtime."
Killjoy! Where's the fun if people can't accuse MMFA of trying to censor the lovely and talented Ms. Coulter??
Who is this lovely Ms. Coulter? Is she related to Ann?
Note to self: Get to Borders and buy this *book*! And MMFA, what's the big deal? 10 or so instances in a book over 200 pages? That's like only one per 20 pages! She should probably receive some sort of award for not being even MORE inflammatory.
Must be fun to continually spew hatred in print and get paid well for it. Even towards the company who is giving her air time.
Gee what a surprise, Anne Coulter is trying to sell venom. I frankly think we all do her too much of a service by even paying attention to her... but NBC does us all a greater disservice by featuring her on their shows.
Brab:
Agreed and to add to that, it doesn't mean that we can't be critical of her inflammatory rhetoric and NBC giving her a platform for it..
If you go o huffpo you can see some additional examples of her denegrating Michelle Obama. What's next - Obama's children?
Why not? Rush Limbaugh aired a picture of then 13 (?) year old Chelsea Clinton on his old TV program to suggest that the Clinton's "also had a pet dog." McCain was even less subtle with his famous "joke." (And these people critices LIBERALS' sense of humor?)
These people (Rush, Insanity, Orally, Coulter, etc...) are scum. They have no limits, nor any sense of decency, and Coulter is far and away the worst of them.
As long as MSNBC gives Saint Keith an hour a night to use as his platform to attack and say many of the hate filled things he does, and launch the personal attacks he does, calls by MMFA to silence Coulter will fall on deaf ears.
What does Olbermann say that's anywhere near the level of Coulter?
Nothing even close, ever.
"Point of view" has no point.
To these peploe, if a liberal disagrees with you it's "hate speech" but conservative hate speech is just a disagreement... or worse: a pathetic attempt at humor.
(To which they will then say we have no sense of humor - only to turm around and accuse Olbermann, Franken, Stewart, SNL, etc... of "hate speech.) Truly pathetic.
"Hate filled"? "Personal attacks"? That's Ann Coulter, who can only write hate filled propaganda and personal attacks in its books. And how do you explain that Coulter came out as an anti-Semite and said that "Jews need to be perfected"? Do you want to defend those remarks, perhaps?
I'd also like to know how anyone can accept someone defending George Allen's "Macaca" comment. As if racism is just fine because if it's directed at a "tracker". Has Olbermann defended anything like that, ever?
POV is one of those people who have two definitions of what's considered hate filled:
Democrat: "he hasn't acted in the best interests of this country" = hate filled anti american diatribe.
Republican: "that dirty low down uppity n-word stole the election and thinks he has a mandate! what an arrogant j@ckass!" = well thought out opinion. (note there has never been a clarified example of what right wing hate is by rightwingers!)
Pointing out conservative's actions and their consequences is, by right-wing ideology, to prove oneself a "hater." Classic projection.
I saw Dee Dee Myers and Peggy Noonan on some talk show a few years ago. They went back and forth, I forget the topic, until Myers pointed out an administration action, or lack of same, which completely disproved the point Noonan was making. Noonan responded "That's hitting below the belt."
It seems to me, POINTOFVIEW, that "Saint" (your word) Keith said many hate filled things because he was addressing some very "hateful" people and actions. The majority of his rants were directed at those who DESERVED his hatred. There aren't too many individuals in this outgoing administration that deserve anything BUT our hatred. Good riddance.
Where 'YAT, Irony? You made some excellent comments, my man. That many Republicans think Coulter is funny only speaks to the conservative "sense of humor". It is almost impossible for me to get my head around a concept like "Republican sense of humor". As to Coulter, she has learned to become a media star from the best of the no-talent celebrities who are famous ONLY by being offensive. There is a whole network based on that principle - FOX News. I don't follow the ratings, but is NBC hurting that much?
Hit the nail on the head. The question is: How many of those ad managers and media buyers were doing this because they were directed to do so, and how many did it because it made business sense.
Exactly how do the National Review and Washington Times stay in business? Are they businesses are charities?
Agreed - it's comparable to the Chip Saltzmann's Christmas "comedy album" present - full of racist and bigoted nonsense, and when called on it, it's only because "liberals didn't get the joke". Republican jokes are simply saying mean-spirited stereotypical things about people they wouldn't deem worthy to talk to... and then they have the gall to call it "satire"
"...evidently McCain was more afraid of the real attack machine: the mainstream media. "
PLEASE!
McCain got the media boost he ALWAYS gets. The media began minimizing the Obama campaign's positives as soon as he had dispatched Hillary Clinton. McCain's problem was that as hard as the media tried to propel him, his own campaign was so inept that the media couldn't generate any momentum for him.
Someone ought to ask Coulter how, if the media is so biased towards liberals, SHE continues to publish a column, get book deals and appear on TV. How come NO ONE in the "liberal" media will ask about her own voter fraud.
Coulter is a fraud and her arguments don't pass even the most casual scrutiny.
I've already admitted to visiting Human Events recently, so I can say that I was amazed at Coulters column there generating 1200+ comments (when I last checked). I skimmed over the comments, and saw a few liberal posters pointing out flaws and lies. The remaining 1100+ seemed to be wingnuts saying "Way to go, Ann! You've obviously hit a nerve by telling the truth and making the trolls attack you!"
That's just to let anybody unfamiliar with Coulter's fan base get a glimpse into their criteria for excellent writing; If people can point out that your writing sucks, and you're lying, you're doin' it right.
And Worrierking, thanks for the restraint, As a male skank, I appreciate your avoidance of any skank-bashing.
Restraint is necessary due to the fragile nature of our coalition of male skanks (who you represent) and the unabashed degenerates of whom I count myself a proud member.
Christ almighty, Coulter has become such a whiney nag. "Neeeyahh, liberals are rebuilding everything cons have worked so hard to ruin. Boo Hoo woe is me."
Buncha pansy complaints, this book is, I hope it sells millions and all these cons internalize her sibilant moans of discomfiture.
"her sibilant moans of discomfiture".
Now that sounds like right wing pornography.
Sounds like something to do with a tight-fitting corset...and tall boots. You know, typical Republican stuff... ;>)
Hey Irony, How did you know what I was wearing? :-0) Oh, except you forgot the whip, well I wasn't exactly wearing it. I was using it on some male skanks like Wk and the colonel. :-) Those whiny lib nancy boys like a good whipping from Mummy.
Hey Irony, How did you know what I was wearing? :-0)
Aw Miz Julia, my fault, I showed him the photos ;-)
Those whiny lib nancy boys like a good whipping from Mummy
So do us macho Cons...but you already know that ;-)
So do us macho Cons...but you already know that ;-)
Yes, spread our private business all over the forum. CAD!!
Maybe not winger porn. Too many syllables. It would strain their tinny ears.
What I still find amazing is that there is a market for trash like this.
NBC could probably care less if Coulter sells her "book" What they want is ratings which runs the revenue engines to attract sponsors.
Watch Coulter on NBC, and pay particular attention to the commercials. You can see by the sponsors who NBC considers to be in line with Coulter.
What woman talks about 'Who's the biggest p*ssy?"
By switching from reviing Joe McCarthy's tattered ensign to more cultural criticism, she uncover just what a rat's nest her mind is.
Wouldn't it be nice if Today co-booked Halle Berry on the show?
I'd vote for Dave Barry to intervierw her.
Yea, that part made me cringe...Ann Coulter engages in race-bating to accuse Halle Berry and others of race-baiting. Uhhh...being "half" black isn't exactly the same as being half Irish. Being regarded as a black person by society, regardless whether only one of your parents is black, would knda make you indentify with that race, don't you think? And when a black person wins and Oscar - or is elected President of the USA - that is kinda out of the ordinary. Are Ann Coulter's readers so mindless that they actually buy into her garbage?
Ooops...meant to post this below pbg's post above.
Why waste a moment's dicsussion on Coulter? An appearance on NBC likely won't sell a book to anyone who wasn't already going to buy it. She's irrelevant to all but her base, the basest of the base. The best way to deal with her brand of nasty is to ignore it.
I'll never understand how so many smart liberals still believe ignoring these people is the best way to end their lying ways. Did you learn nothing from John Kerry's mistake of not dignifying the opposition with a response? Did you learn anything from the failure of Gore to punch back when Bush linked him to Clinton's sexual indiscretions? Did you not pay attention to the way Obama always had a counter-punch?
Wake up, ignoring these people will not make them go away any more than ignoring your credit card bill will make your debt go away. Punch back -hard- your opponent will find it difficult to lie about you if your fist is in their mouth.
You're quite right, roundhouse: Coulter and her ilk shouldn't be ignored, especially because they're supported by what is still referred to as "main stream media." Of course, precisely because MSM--in this case, NBC--is featuring the likes of Coulter, that it's losing credibility and becoming increasingly marginalized. Let's face it, there more pertinent (and believable) information about politics on our cable comedies like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report than there is in our three major networks combined. I'm just amazed that that the executives at NBC don't see the erosion or their credibility by the decisions they make. But then, the top executives of our major financial institutions and our car industry have also been oblivious to having lost all credibility for their roles in creating the economic crises we now face!
On top of roundhouse's excellent example, consider Limbaugh. Ignoring him didn't do any good. Nothing's guaranteed to end the careers of these sort of people, but at least you make sure the point is out there:these people have no place in the public discourse.
Credibility makes a difference. You're inclined to follow the advice of someone you see on television, because why would anyone put them on television if they didn't know what they were talking about? The same sort of principle applies here. You don't expect someone to appear multiple times if what they say is unacceptable in any way, so the multiple appearances makes what they say seem more acceptable. It gets the stamp of approval from a major network, so of course it makes it more likely that people are going to buy her book.
If you want these sort of people to be marginalized, as they should be, then acting as if nothing's wrong with their placement in the center of the public stage is a very odd way to achieve that goal.
Sure, Coulter's work is apalling. A true embarrassment to this nation, really. However, I agree that NBC shouldn't deny her a platform. I do think it is suspicious how much more air time she seems to be getting through them than what I noticed in the past. I have found that the best thing is just to ignore her. Otherwise, you'll just get rilled up.
Great idea for a new show on MSNBC: a combo with Ann Coulter and William Kristol. It's called C**TDOWN.
Donald, OMG, you did not just say that..! :-)
Oh darlin, you know you wish you said it first. Ha!
Oh STHU you man, you!!
Shall I tell everyone you're Coulter's ghost writer, darling?
Is NBC going to help Coulter sell this book?
Yes. NBC is in dire need of ratings and revenue, they are a failing network. They will do anything unethical , they have been unethical for years. The network that gives us such wonderful programing as "The Biggest Loser", is truly a loser for its "love" of Ann Coulter.
JL, as long as Coulter helps their ratings she will be invited back. That goes for NBC or any network. I mean, when did ethics or good taste ever guide any network's decision on what or whom they'll give airtime to?
You make a great point Jeter, by the way nice to see you again, Happy New Year!!
"A man was found dead today in his home in Arizona after police broke into his apartment after an alert from his neighbours. He was found wearing women's lingerie which consisted of a basque, stocking, and suspenders. He was also wearing high-heeled leather boots, a t-shirt bearing the slogan "I luv Anne Coulter", was handcuffed behind his back, and had an orange in his mouth which led too him suffocating.
The police removed the "I luv Anne Coulter" t-shirt to save embarressment to his family."
Vaugh Bode went in a similar way, though without the tee shirt, or orange. Sexual orgasm just as your about to suffocate, while in fetishware. A strange and sad sexual identity. Not the just because some do suffocate and die.
What is needed if we are to "punch back and puch back hard" against the likes of Couler, is a point by point annotated guid to all her works, a place we can go to for easy refutation of her arguments. Pointing out that she uses terms like "pussies" and "retarded" will go nowhere: she will always use simple, baiting words for effect. We need to distill her arguments, and refute them, calmly, rationally, and always.
The smartest thing we can do is point out all her lies .That will eventualy render her ineffactive.
Some of us still miss the most important and horrifying thing: that there is a HUGE number of "Americans" who will listen and believe and support what Ann Coulter says and writes. Obama did not win by a large landslide, don't forget. John McCain, in spite of his ridiculous campaign, got a hell of a lot of votes! AND this even AFTER he pulled Sarah Palin into the mix. Think of the support she STILL gets. "I don't trust him (Obama). He's a....a....arab." This is the kind of person who will eventually destroy this country.
Ann Coulter's distasteful rhetoric is her right to free speech. Now, having said that, I think to give her airtime is wrong in so many different ways. She has absolutely no redeeming qualities at all. She may appeal to the fringe right, and some of her thoughts, especially the poison creme` brulee genere could be seen as speaking to the home grown terrorists of the Timothy McVey ilk.
During the first hour of his radio show, Hannity saithe Today Show would NOT have Coulter on. He atrributed this to the fact thet her new book is critical of the media.
When I read about Ms. Coulter's rants, I always wonder why she is so full of hate. I imagine that her heart looks a lot like the grinch's heart; 2 sizes too small. How sad. I think she is in desperate need of therapy (either psycho or chemical).
No, no! What we should do (and tell everyone we know, to do) is to turn on the Today Show, and when Coulter comes on, change the channel IMMEDIATELY.
I'm pretty sure this will show up in their ratings (if enough of us do it) and they will know that Coulter HURTS their ratings, rather than helping them.
If you have spare time, you can buy these little key-ring sized universal TV remotes. Then, whenever you pass a TV in a store or bus/train station or airport, bar, hospital, etc, you can zap the TV off! I did this at my car dealer's service waiting room - every time they turned it back on (on Fox) I zapped it again. Then I turned it to MSNBC and left it alone. It's been on MSNBC the last 2 times I've been there...
;o)
As a fiscally conservative, and environmentally liberal centrist Republican, I find none of the none of the attached "opinions' something you could dispute, and in the future, if you are going to dispute them, cite references (links would be good). Without disputing evidence, you lack credability. Some of the "opinions" are downright funny. Theres that old saying that comes to mind (edited for the kids) "opinions are like our tail ends, we all have them and they all stink".
Remember, now that Mr. Frankin is in, Politics may have an opportunity to be fun to watch again.
Well, NBC also cenored the trailer for the documentary about the Dixi Chicks and how the right wingers attacked them personally. There are certain people at NBC who have a relationship with the radical right, there is no doubt about it. And Ann Coulter is definitely their role model. Here hate-filled lies are even <a href="http://users.rcn.com/skutsch/anticoulter/quotes.html" >famous</a>..
