Coulter: Today cancels, but CBS' Early Show to host her
SUMMARY: On her website, Ann Coulter announced that the appearances she was scheduled to make on the January 6 edition of Today had been canceled, but that she would be appearing that day on The Early Show.
In a January 5 update to her website, author and syndicated columnist Ann Coulter announced that the appearances she was scheduled to make on the January 6 edition of NBC's Today had been canceled, but that she would be appearing that day on CBS' The Early Show. As Media Matters for America has noted, Coulter recently announced that she was scheduled to appear on Today to promote the release of her new book, Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America, which Media Matters found to contain numerous falsehoods and inflammatory statements. As Media Matters noted, hosts and anchors on NBC itself and affiliates -- including Today co-hosts Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer, Tonight host Jay Leno, Hardball host Chris Matthews, Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, and CNBC's Big Idea host Donny Deutsch -- have expressed disapproval of, in Leno's words, Coulter's "harsh" and "nasty" statements, or criticized the media for promoting her.
For instance, discussing Coulter's October 8, 2007, appearance on The Big Idea -- during which Coulter asserted that "we" Christians "just want Jews to be perfected" -- Deutsch said on the October 12, 2007, edition of Today: "And I think that's what -- we're playing dangerous with words in our society that there's no accountability. There's a glibness that we in the media kind of elevate, and I'm here to kind of say I'm personally tired of it, and I think America is tired of it also." Deutsch later told Vieira that someone might ask, "Aren't we part of the problem?" Vieira responded: "Of course we are. We're perpetuating it."
In a January 5 blog post, Politico staff writer Michael Calderone also noted Coulter's announcement that her Today appearance had been canceled, writing: "Media Matters has been picking apart the book, and last week asked the following: "Is NBC going to help Coulter sell this book?" Seems like they're not."

Tonight on Hannity and Colmes, Coulter tried to change her definition of single mothers to mean mothers of illegitimate children, regarding her comment about future strippers. She did so in response to Colmes' challenge.
But here's what her book says:

She's obviously feeling the heat, and was also dumb enough to admit that she was upset by the Today cancellation.

Looks to me like they're also congratulating NBC, and I base this on their mention of no less than 6 NBC hosts who have expressed disapproval of giving Coulter publicity. It looks to me like MMFA is hinting that NBC's producers are listening. They didn't even bother mentioning Keith Olbermann.

The problem isn't with having Coulter on to promote her book. You all should welcome that. The problem is that the hosts of these programs don't challenge her book the way they should. If her books exaggerations and strawmen were exposed during her segment, I doubt you all would be upset that she appeared on the program.
This is the problem with hate-screech and lying, as you pointed out. There are no media personalities with the spine to call them on it. The media will allow any nut job to say anything without the slightest challenge. The brief exchange between Donny Deutsch and Meredith Vieira said more in a few minutes than all of MM has been trying to do for years: that the media IS the problem by perpetuating the silliness from extreme right-wing hate mongers. Deutsch was spot-on by calling attention to Coulter's "Business Model" for success. For some, hate and lying are THE models for their undeserved "success".

I don't think it's as much what Coulter inhales that offends some, but what she exhales. Actually, what's most likely feeding their interest and promotion of Miss Coulter is her provocation abilities. She generates strong feelings for and against, which translates into ratings, which is what it's all about. It's less about leftwing vs. rightwing media, and more about publicity equals $$$.

You might actually have a point, since that's not a valid reason to keep someone off of a program. If there's a fair criticism of someone, what the audience wants at any given time isn't that important.
On the other hand, Coulter is a flamethrower who has zero interest in engaging in civil, honest conversation and who has no credibility whatsoever. There are plenty of reasons that people in the mainstream media should make every effort to keep her out of the spotlight.
The question is, what REASON was she giving for being highly critical? Was she pointing to something of substance or was it just part of M(ann) Coulter's usual bomb throwing bollox? There's nothing about whether the criticism is fair or not, just that the viewers don't want to see any criticism of Obama. I don't buy that. I wouldn't care if people wanted to see criticism of Bush at any particular time or not. If there was a valid criticism to be made, then that voice should be heard, whether it was a "downer" or "just not the time" or whatever.
