SUMMARY: On his Fox News show, Sean Hannity claimed that Rev. Gene Robinson "bashed President Bush" in a prayer published in GQ magazine and then stated: "You know, all along, I actually thought pastors were supposed to spread the love of God, not fan the flames of partisan hatred." However, Hannity frequently praised the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, whom he described as a "very dear friend," despite Falwell's history of inflammatory partisan statements.

On the January 13 edition of Fox News' Hannity, Sean Hannity claimed that Rev. Gene Robinson -- the openly gay Episcopal bishop from New Hampshire whom President-elect Barack Obama has selected to deliver the invocation at his inauguration kickoff -- "bashed President Bush" in a prayer published in GQ magazine. Hannity then stated: "You know, all along, I actually thought pastors were supposed to spread the love of God, not fan the flames of partisan hatred." However, Hannity did not criticize his frequent guest, the late Rev. Jerry Falwell -- whom Hannity called a "very dear friend"-- despite Falwell's history of inflammatory, partisan rhetoric directed at Democrats.

According to the Episcopal Church website, Robinson said he would use some of the prayers that he wrote for GQ -- which do not mention Bush by name -- in drafting his prayer for the inaugural event. In one prayer, titled "A Prayer for Barack Obama," reproduced on Boston Globe religion reporter Michael Paulson's Articles of Faith blog, Robinson wrote in part:

O God, we give you thanks for your child Barack, as he assumes the office of President of the United States.

Give him wisdom beyond his years, and inspire him with Lincoln's reconciling leadership, FDR's courageous boldness and vision, and JFK's ability to enlist the best efforts of our people.

Give him a quiet heart, for our Ship of State needs a steady, calm captain for these times, not a fierce warrior who knee-jerk reacts to every real or perceived threat.

Give him stirring words, for we will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges ahead.

But while Hannity criticized Robinson for "partisan" remarks, he frequently hosted Falwell, founder of the conservative Moral Majority and frequent critic of Democrats and progressive positions. Falwell had a history of inflammatory statements about former President Bill and Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton. For example, Falwell publicized, co-financed, and distributed The Clinton Chronicles, a video that contained anti-Clinton allegations of drug trafficking and murder. On the October 22, 2003, episode of CNN's Crossfire, Falwell said, "I think that we needed Bill Clinton, because we turned our backs on the lord and we needed a bad president to get our attention again." Falwell also called Hillary Clinton "a bad person with a criminal mind," and said during the lead-up to the Democratic presidential primary, "I think Hillary would be the worst thing that would ever happen to America." Falwell also told the Associated Press, "I don't think anybody doubts that the Republicans have a better record and a better commitment to national security than the Democrats do."

Despite these and other partisan remarks by Falwell, Hannity devoted an entire broadcast of Hannity & Colmes to Falwell the day after his death, during which he referred to Falwell as "a very dear friend of mine" and said, "He may have misspoke once or twice. But he devoted his life, to his religion." Before his death, Falwell was frequently a recipient of Hannity's praise. On the January 24, 2007, broadcast, Hannity discussed filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi's documentary about evangelical Christians with her and said, "I hope you also capture people like Franklin Graham and the Reverend Falwell. They spend millions of dollars a year to help people in a lot of very positive ways. Did you capture that?" Pelosi responded, "Listen to you. You're just doing P.R. for them." Also, during a discussion of children born into poverty on the July 2, 2006, edition of Hannity & Colmes, Hannity cited Falwell as an example of people who are "charitable" and said, "Jerry Falwell has a home for any girl who's pregnant. He'll send them to school. He'll give them free health care if they have their baby." Hannity also delivered the commencement address at Falwell's Liberty University in May 2005.

As Media Matters for America noted, Hannity applied a double standard on the January 12 broadcast of his show when he said, "I don't like the lyrics that refer to women as 'B's' and 'ho's,' and we've had many discussions about this," despite the fact that he previously aired concert footage of rock musician and right-wing activist Ted Nugent calling Obama a "piece of shit" and referring to Hillary Clinton as a "worthless bitch." After airing the clip, Hannity referred to Nugent as a "friend and frequent guest on the program."

From the January 13 edition of Fox News' Hannity:

HANNITY: In other transition news, the president-elect is calling upon Gene Robinson, the Episcopal Church's only openly gay bishop, to jump-start inaugural activities with an invocation on Sunday afternoon. Now, Bishop Robinson has talked about the need for unity, but his notion of "E pluribus unum" is somewhat untraditional. In a prayer published in GQ magazine, Robinson wished Mr. Obama the best and bashed President Bush, saying, quote, "Give him a quiet heart, for our Ship of State needs a steady, calm captain for these times, not a fierce warrior who knee-jerk reacts to every real or perceived threat."

You know, all along, I actually thought pastors were supposed to spread the love of God, not fan the flames of partisan hatred. Yeah, silly me.

And finally tonight, a Texas man's professional dreams are shattered, and he's taking action.

Falwell sure spread the love when his bloated, rotted carcass was walking the earth. Repugs unfortunately reproduce so we'll have more Falwells and Hannities.

Is it just me or is there something really creepy about a pastor who wore as much heavy make-up as Falwell did...particularly in his later years? Maybe it was just God's sense of humor on display, telling Jerry 'You look great! A little eye shadow might work good, too..."  ;>)

he wore makeup for the same reason they put pink food coloring in hotdogs and bologne. They would look off white due to the fact they are up to 33% fat just like falwell. His body actually died in his early 2o's.

        Good point Marker,

I've been wondering if we shouldn't tax conservatives who produce offspring?

In honor of michael Sewage, we could call it, I guess, The Sewage Assessment.

Let's face it, it is costly to have to clean this conservative crap up.

In other words, "I have what I need, but I don't have what I want." Applied to Rockefeller and could easily apply to Shamity.  Offered enough money, A-Rod willingly moved from shortstop to third.  I think offered enough money Shamity could move from right to left. Call it a lack of deep seated convictions or whatever, Shamity is a sham.

Exactly, 101. Insanity know that his idiot followers bathe in the swill he pukes out on a daily basis. The conservative listeners of RNC talk radio have no ability to reason for themselves, that why hate mongers like Hannity, Limbaugh, Weiner, Levin and others have an audience. 2 days after 9/11, Jerry Foulsmell said that his GAWD gave America what she deserved, with fellow charlatan Robertson agreeing. Hannity said nothing about these anti-American statements. He's a punk, a hateful little man who know nothing about the religion he claims to follow.

Why am I not surprised?  I suppose that it is not "inaccurate" for him to bash Robinson but not Falwell and wonder why this made it to this board.

Mr. Hannity is so full of bias and hate that he is the poster boy for "partisan hatred."   I listened to his show today and he did little more than bash Obama's policies, which have not even been implemented yet.

Frankly, I am really glad he is doing what he is doing because he and his neo-con buddies are a major factor as to why we elected a Democrat and moreover, why the Republican party is in such dire straits.  They have turned the Republican party into a Fascist organization.

      They get what they deserve.

Unless I missed it Hannity did not say Falwell failed to spread hatered, just that he liked him. And given the fact that Hannity spreads so much hatered that it should come as no shock that his friend did likewise during their lifetime.

It is reprehensible that people chose hate over love.  Sean Hannity is a very religious man, a Catholic who nearly became a priest.  He loves all humanity and merely points out to us the failings of we the human community.  He shows how very much we need the love of God, His forgiveness and His support.

This so-called priest who became a bishop is invested in an illegal church one not recognized by the Vatican as being authentic through the lines of bishops.

It is a group of misfits and immoralists a church founded by an immoral and decadent king.  The basis of this church is one of satan not of God.  So what they do is immaterial.   It is a group of rabble rousers who wish to promote homosexuality and marriage amongst same sex and an attempt to rid the world of natural marriage.  Homo marriage is against God's nature.

So it would seem Dr. Hannity is a bringer of truth in this time of great attacks against the moral people of this world.

Thank God for Dr. Hannity and those like him who promote the right way of life.

      Kilty

Second, I am not sure that when you say the "right" way of life, whether you mean "conservative" or "correct" (or both).

Finally, since Episcopal bishops are not governed by the Vatican, something that surely you know since you are obviously so intelligent, I must conclude that it is your position that any religion other than Catholicism is "illegal."

I thought I would point this out to you as this was a web site promotes accuracy in media.

Homo marriage is against God's nature.

If God created "homos", then aren't they within God's nature?

Either that or God sometimes make mistakes.  Around 5-10% of the  time just on that one task.

Like most anti-religionists, in asking your quesiton you show your ignorance. Remember a thing called "Free Will" that was imparted to all of God's "Higher Creatures"- angels and men. God created everyone, but gave everyone free will and the abiliity to make choices. Of course, that'a anathematic to lefties since you'd prefer the state think for you and deny any higher power than that.

I Corinthians 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals.

Leviticus 18:22 -You must not have sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman; it I s a detestable act.

      Footnote - The Bible.

How about very active or aggressive partners? Or those who are really good at it and don't need to practice at all anymore?

Romans; 1:26 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged the natural sexual relations for unnatural ones, 1  1:27 and likewise the men also abandoned natural relations with women 2  and were inflamed in their passions 3  for one another. Men 4  committed shameless acts with men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

1:28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, 5  God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what should not be done. 6  1:29 They are filled 7  with every kind of unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, malice. They are rife with 8  envy, murder, strife, deceit, hostility. They are gossips, 1:30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, contrivers of all sorts of evil, disobedient to parents, 1:31 senseless, covenant-breakers, 9  heartless, ruthless.

            Thanks for the quote.

"...God gave them over to dishonorable passions..."

Personally I do not like to subscribe "fault" to another's object affection, as long as it is two adults.

However, if you and the Bible want to give over the blame to God -- hey fine with me. Really I could not "lay the blame" on him but I don't really see a blame issue with homosexuality.

However, I will give you Romans 1:28 through 1:31. Yeah, probably should not work the malice so much. How about the slander, Hannity seems to have that down.

That's St. Paul, isn''t it? Someone who was not a disciple of Jesus, who never quoted any of his teachings, and who differed with him on at least one major point (the necessioty for Christians to follow the Law of the (Hebrew) Bible.

Why is someone like that even considered to be a guide for Divine Doctrine?

Fundie's like to quote 'The Bible' to be able to shoehorn the reprehensible writing of the Pharisee Saul of Tarsus into a belief in Jesus.

People like Sean Hannity and Jerry Falwell (not to mention Bill O'Rielly, James Dobson, Ann Coulter, Bill Donohue, Ruhs Limbaugh and Pat Robertson) really inspire me to believe in religion and Christianity in particular... if only to believe that they will all have hell to look forward to.  They'll be in good company, and have LOTS to talk about.  (Imagine how entertained all there readers, listeners and parrishoners will be!)

(Sadly, Chris Hitchens is still out there giving everyone the impression that atheists are all pompous drunken sots.)

Bush is a very shallow man....He did not and he does not have the intellect to run this wonderful country. This is not Hatred...It is Fact, Hannity! Well, you did not go to college long enough to learn to understand the "King's English.

And your "logical argument " is what? Ahh---I see you don't have one. Did you actually believe you were making a point here? Or are you just whining because finally liberals are going to fight back when you and you ilk try to parrot the demented inspirations of Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, or O'Reilly on this board? Since you have no point, I'll go with the latter. But, by all means please continue to post this 3-methyl indole you take as an argument so we all can enjoy a good laugh at your expense. Fortunately web browsers don't convey smell too.
