SUMMARY: Echoing a Republican talking point, Lou Dobbs claimed that in the economic recovery bill, "There's more than $4 billion for ... neighborhood stabilization activities -- $4 billion, which translates into funding for so-called advocacy groups such as ACORN." In fact, the recovery bill does not mention ACORN or otherwise single it out for funding; Dobbs was echoing a common attack by Republicans, who have falsely accused Democrats of trying to appropriate money for the group.

Echoing a frequent Republican talking point during the February 3 edition of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight, Dobbs claimed that in the House-passed economic recovery bill, "There's more than $4 billion for so-called neighbor -- are you ready, neighborhood stabilization activities -- $4 billion, which translates into funding for so-called advocacy groups such as ACORN -- ACORN, the left-wing advocacy group. That organization and its voter-registration drives are under investigation in more than a dozen states." In fact, as Media Matters for America has documented, the recovery bill does not mention ACORN or otherwise single it out for funding; ACORN itself has said that it is ineligible for the funds and has no plans to apply for them. Dobbs' claim is based on a misrepresentation of a provision that would appropriate $4.19 billion "for neighborhood stabilization activities related to emergency assistance for the redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes as authorized under division B, title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008" [emphasis added].

The $4.19 billion would be distributed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Neighborhood Stabilization Program, an existing program authorized under Title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. HUD's website states that the purpose of the program is to provide assistance "to acquire and redevelop foreclosed properties that might otherwise become sources of abandonment and blight within their communities." From HUD's "Neighborhood Stabilization Program Grants" section:

HUD's new Neighborhood Stabilization Program will provide emergency assistance to state and local governments to acquire and redevelop foreclosed properties that might otherwise become sources of abandonment and blight within their communities. The Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) provides grants to every state and certain local communities to purchase foreclosed or abandoned homes and to rehabilitate, resell, or redevelop these homes in order to stabilize neighborhoods and stem the decline of house values of neighboring homes. The program is authorized under Title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008.

Moreover, ACORN has denied that it is eligible for the "neighborhood stabilization funds" and has stated that it does not intend to apply for them. After House Minority Leader John Boehner's (R-OH) office issued press releases claiming that the recovery bill "makes groups like ACORN eligible for a $4.19 billion pot of money for 'neighborhood stabilization activities,' " in a January 28 press release, ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis called the claim an "obfuscation" that "was picked up across the right-wing echo chamber and has been used as a fig leaf by conservatives in their attempts to justify their opposition to progressive economic policies." Lewis further stated: "We have not received neighborhood stabilization funds, have no plans to apply for such funds, and didn't weigh in on the pending rule changes." On January 29, Lewis wrote on the Huffington Post, "[L]et's be clear. ACORN isn't getting any of this money. Since it is set aside for non-profit housing developers to help purchase, rehab, and resell foreclosed properties, we aren't eligible for it in the first place."

From the February 3 edition of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight:

DOBBS: Well, we've also found some more interesting funding in this bill. There's more than $4 billion for so-called neighbor -- are you ready, neighborhood stabilization activities -- $4 billion, which translates into funding for so-called advocacy groups such as ACORN -- ACORN, the left-wing advocacy group.

That organization and its voter-registration drives are under investigation in more than a dozen states. ACORN a major supporter, of course, of President Obama in the last election. Well, we hope you will consider calling and emailing your elected representatives, senators, and congressmen; let them know how you think about this so-called legislation. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because the person who pays Dobbs' over-inflated salary is most likely a Republican.

Louie, Louie, Louie, just own up to the fact that you are dumb. You can do it. Well, at least your little intern reading this may read the entire story above and correct you. Probably not, because you will accuse her of something stupid...ergo, your dumbness. The Cons are playing you like an oboe, (I know, it's a fiddle), but this is an out of tune oboe which the Radical Radio Right---the 3 R's of the Cons-- screech out 24-7.

Louie, what has happened to you. Could it be money?? I'll bet it is..or a result of some strange disease that the illegals gave you by breathing on you.

Why should he own up to the facts? We've got people who post here who can't do that. Dobbs is much higher on the food chain...

Yeah, it must be very annoying being too fat to get up and change the channel. Typical liberal...expect others to do everything for you. If you don't like watching the guy, turn the channel.

What your kind of people don't understand is that mmfa is here to expose republican hate-mongering. However, they produce the same hate-filled message from the liberal side of things. Mmfa mongers hate as well as any r/w TV host, but you seem to love that kind of hate, but hate the other kind of hate. Hmmm, that does seem very hypocritical. Now, it all fits...you hypocrital liberal ars's can't fathom actually getting your own tv/radio stations that will broadcast your hateful messages, you demand that r/w media give up theirs.

The best part about the Lou Dobbs show is when the commercials come on touting him as "Mr. Independent". We have CNN on all day at my job, so I have to sit through his drivel, and I can tell you, I have NEVER heard him refer to a group as a "right-wing advocacy group" or a "far-right-wing conservative nut site" though every day MM has him saying something of the sort about a liberal group. Independent? Independent from what?

Maybe you can obtain the remote and change to judge Judy or something. You can buy one of those universal remotes and surreptiously change the channel to LA Housewifes or the New York housewifes. Or something.

Let's see...Dobbs' remarks were on February 3. ACORN issued a press release on January 28 denying it had any interest in these funds. You think maybe Lou could have at least made a tiny mention of the ACORN rebuttal? That would be called responsible J-O-U-R-N-A-L-I-S-M. Or maybe Lou's researcher didn't find ACORN's press release. Maybe Lou's researcher was watching illegal alien porn on the internet instead...  ;>)

mmfa: ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis called the claim an "obfuscation" that "was picked up across the right-wing echo chamber and has been used as a fig leaf by conservatives in their attempts to justify their opposition to progressive economic policies." Sorry to 'pop mmfa's bubble' but... In the link provided by mmfa it specically says who is eligible. And, I can think of no reason why acorn would say they are ineligible for funds when groups who do what acorn does are certainly eligible for funding as written (unless groups under Federal investigation for fraud would make them ineligible). Perhaps mmfa's writers were too pre-occupied with hatred, of certain hosts and groups, that they ignored that the claim being made by the gop and Dobbs is factually correct. Groups "like" acorn can and most certainly would be eligible for funding from the stimulus bill. Mmfa is the one making this into "hatred by association" by implying the gop or Dobbs said acorn is getting money. Mmfa couldn't do it, now, I wonder if anyone else can prove that acorn is in-eligible for funding (as acorn claims--without proof) as written in the stimulus bill.

I'm sorry you can't read. I am asking you to give proof that acorn is in-eligible for federal funding, as so many of you claim as fact (but no facts have been brought to the discussion by any liberal, yet).  Simply saying they "haven't filled out the paperwork" isn't proof enough to show in-eligibility.

Skep, You have to remember that on occasion, philib reads between doing lines, I mean the lines, sorry.. If you really look deep at the empty spaces between the words, you will see what the Righties see. Those blank spaces all mean something to them. Actually, they can make up things as the go along. Why do you think RadicalRightWing radio exists? Some of them just can't get the hang of it. Skep, look deep but not too long. Call for a life-line if needed.

Yes, that is what they are saying. They will deny that groups LIKE acorn will get the money and they will blindly follow their leader in saying everyone is a liar who says "groups like acorn will receive federal funding". But, that is to be expected from those who blindly follow who they cannot see.
