SUMMARY: On Fox News' On the Record, Sean Hannity falsely identified "a Frisbee golf course" as an example of an earmark in the economic recovery bill. In fact, there is no earmark for "a Frisbee golf course" in either the House or Senate version of the bill, which both specifically prohibit using funds in the bill for a "golf course." The Senate version also prohibits using funds for a "community park."

When asked by Fox News host Greta Van Susteren -- during the February 9 edition of On the Record -- to provide "some examples" of earmarks in the economic recovery bill, Sean Hannity replied: "A Frisbee park -- a Frisbee golf course, Greta?" In fact, there is no earmark for "a Frisbee golf course" in either the House or Senate version of the recovery bill, which both specifically prohibit using funds in the bill for a "golf course." The Senate version also prohibits using funds for a "community park."

As The Wall Street Journal reported on February 4, a "36-hole 'disc golf' course" was included among a list of potential projects provided by the United States Conference of Mayors in a January 17 report. However, according to the Conference of Mayors report: "Mayors recognize that the economic recovery initiative to be undertaken by the new administration and Congress will include a review process through which projects eligible for funding will be identified. The projects listed in this report in no way represent an inventory of projects formally proposed for funding." The Conference of Mayors report stated that cities were invited to submit projects that "reflected their unique local infrastructure needs, produced jobs for their residents, and contributed to future economic development." The Frisbee golf course was listed among the projects "ready to go" in Austin, Texas. The February 4 Journal article reported that "John Hrncir, [Austin's] government-relations officer, says the project list 'was put together on very short notice,' and 'we are not going to submit anything that is questionable when we seek actual funding.' "

Both the House and Senate versions of the economic recovery bill include a provision that specifically prohibits using funds for golf courses, and the Senate version also prohibits using funds for community parks. The Senate version of the bill states in Section 1609:

None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project.

From the February 9 edition of Fox News' On the Record with Greta Van Susteren:

HANNITY: I wish him and his family, his wife, and kids -- the kids seem like wonderful children -- I wish them all the best. But more importantly, I want what is best -- in the best interest of the country. What we have tonight with all this fear-mongering and the worst economy since the Great Depression and this outright lie that was spread again tonight that there are no earmarks in this bill -- this is not what is going to bring us economic security in this country. What historically has worked is capitalism, giving people in this country more of their hard-earned money back. We are not undertaxed, we are overtaxed.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, you were -- I can't help -- but you say the outright lie about the earmarks, so let's go right to that.

HANNITY: I got -- I -- look, I got five pages --

VAN SUSTEREN: Give me -- give me some examples.

HANNITY: A Frisbee park -- a Frisbee golf course, Greta?

VAN SUSTEREN: Well, why is he saying -- why do you think he's saying that, no earmarks? Why is he saying no earmarks?

HANNITY: This is like an Orwellian speak that I can't really figure out. For example, they say that people that don't pay taxes are gonna get a tax cut. I define that as welfare. If they -- if they make a Frisbee park -- a Frisbee golf course -- I don't even know what a Frisbee golf course is.

VAN SUSTEREN: So why do you think he says that? Why does -- why --

HANNITY: I don't know.

Blagovejich certainly is no angel and it was pretty stupid to not realize that someone might be taping him since he was in some trouble for a number of years, but still, he is miles ahead of Hannity in terms of intelligence and knowing what your talking about.  There is no comparison between Blago and Hannity.  Ok, maybe there is in terms of loving the sound of your own voice and talking too much.  But Blago, although corrupt, does have traces of intelligence and depth.

          THANK YOU.

Carlile, I have to admit that we have a Disc golf* course in my local central park. It's been there for a few decades, and I did the links there a few times way back then. Then I quit smoking weed and lost my enthusiasm for the game.

I tried to fix it for ya, and put it to the tune of a well known national anthem...

        Reichwing, Reichwing above all,
        Above everything in the world,
        When always, for protection,
        We stand together as brothers.
From Fox news to the IBC
From Glenn Beck to O'Reilley -
        Reichwing, Reichwing above all
        Above all in the world.

        Reichwing women, Reichwing loyalty,
        Reichwing wine and Reichwing song,
Shall retain in our alter world,
        Their old lovely ring
To inspire us to bold lies
        Our whole life long.
        German women, German loyalty,
        German wine and German song.

        Unity and law and freedom
        Not for the Reichwing Fatherland
Let us all strive for supression
In brotherhood with heart and hand!
        Unity and law and freedom
        will take from our happiness
        Darken our glow of happiness
        Darken, Reichwing Fatherland.

        * Reichwing, Reichwing above all*
And in misfortune all the more.
Only in misfortune can our Reichworld
Show if it is strong and true.
And so it should ring out
        From generations via supression:
        Reichwing, Reichwing above all,
And in misfortune all the more.

Good news my dog friend. You have company in the land of "you've lost your job because the economy sucks." That would be, yep, me. Got laid off today. Good thing I moved across the State, left my old job (for one that was supposed to be better), and ended up, yeah, getting laid off.

I have applied as a civilian contractor to the DOD bases, I'm waiting for a response back. I'm an engineer though, austin has dumped nearly 10,000 onto the market since December. This area of the country is currently rated as the number 1 hardest place to get a job right now because everyone wants to live here.

I must not have been clear. I'm applying not just austin anymore, but SA and Houston. I need to stay in Austin till my daughter graduates in may, but I have family in both towns so am willing to disrupt my family life and stay there during the week and come back home on the weekends. I've applied in person to all the bases down there, in temple, killeen as well.

I was talking to a VP recruiter today, he was telling me for every job app there are currently 5000 resumes on file. It's rough down here.

Thanks guys. I hardly ever agree with Fmbanker, but thanks anyway. It all ends up, we all disagree a lot, but most of the time, we all just "want to get alone" in the parlance of Rodney King.

Snoop, thanks for the links. The upside, is that my financial situation is pretty good right now, for the most part. My wife is still very gainfully employed, I've got a small severance package, and some independent contractor stuff in the works already (I'm also an engineer). I might have some steady work for the next year or so, depending on this local guy I know who is trying to get ISO certified to 9001, and since my background is quality, I can help him with that, at "consulting" rates, which won't be bad. Lots of paperwork, but I can concentrate on one thing, and go from there. I've also been looking at law school as well (yes, ANOTHER lawyer), but having a technical background, I'm looking at intellectual property, and or patent law, which according to my father in law (also a lawyer) would be a good field for a mid 30's engineer looking for another career path.

I've been through too much stuff in manufacturing to go back to it. I will, if I have to, but we are losing our manufacturing base, so those jobs, much harder to come by. My company did provide us with folks who will help us with our career paths, so that should work out.

Since the wife and I don't have kids, and we have an extra room, we'll rent that out ASAP.

So even though this sucks, big time, it could be a ton worse. We'll work things out. Thanks for the good thoughts.

If I see anything, will note so here for both of you and anyone else interested.  Having been through this situation a couple of times in my career (although not as bad as this seems), I have a great deal of sympathy for anyone that lost a job in the manner jobs are disappearing right now.

Thanks. This is my second lay off, working in automotive, I'm kind of surprised that I haven't been through more in my career, I have managed to avoid most of them. I've been lucky. Couldn't miss out on this one though, which pretty much stinks. We've got some good plans though in place, I had actually set aside a small amount of money, so this is good as well. Worst case scenario, I get "bailed out" by my in-laws.

Here's the funny thing;  using stimulus money to build a golf course wouldn't be such a bad thing.  Maybe not Frisbee golf, but a regulation golf course.

The design and building of the golf course would employ a small army of people and, once built, it would provide a number of permanent jobs for those who run it.  And, if run correctly, it could generate revenue for the state or municipality.

Let's face it... a lot of private sector revenue is generated by non essential enterprises like golf courses and movie theaters.  It is not unusual for states or cities to own golf courses, and  I assume they can be run at a profit, since there are so many privately owned courses.

But, according to Mr. Steele, government money CANNOT generate jobs.

I'd like to help out the effort to classify the things that Shyawn does not understand.  And, being the lazy liberal I am, I look for ways to get out of work.

Like the old saying goes, "laziness is the mother of efficiency".

Therefore, I suggest we move EVERYTHING to the "things Hannity certainly does not understand" list, and then move them into the "uncertain" list only when warranted.  Would save months of work.  And even if the process got interrupted, it would still mean that the list was more accurate than not.

His repetitive speech patterns and use of 100 words over and over put him below Rainman when it comes to social graces.

"I like Frisbee golf.  I'm an excellent driver..."

I'm no English major, but among all those sentence fragments, is there a common idea?  I mean beyond the idea that a guy who does something so poorly continues to make millions at the same time millions are becoming unemployed.

Hannity will probably respond to Media Matters' correction of his blatant earmark falsehood by issuing another "Left-Wing Obamamania Media Sleaze PC Police Award."

Here's a little advice to all of the pundits trying to push their agendas. If you are going to be pushing your point, don't criticize someone and then say that you "don't know" what it is you are criticizing. Fox News, stop criticizing about things you don't know.

The point is that there is a great deal of waste in the bill.  Spending is not stimulus.  Reagan did not jump start the economy with spending.  He did it by cutting taxes.  I am not saying that we should necessarily be cutting taxes but at least we shouldn't be spending money on confetti for gay pride parades.

Nice one. You were able to lick the boots of St. Ronald and get in a shot at the expense of the gays.

i think it was probably pretty inflationary.  that's why they sold all those war bonds, not because theu govt needed the money (it could print all that) but to get the money out of circulation.

What type of bull is that. Hannity can lie cause he is trying to make a point. How is spending not a stimulus? It worked for the Great Depression but it won't work now? We tried stimulating the econonmy with tax cuts for the rich. Look where it got us. This stimulus plan includes infrastructure spending and TARGETED tax cuts for the lower and middle classes. Please send me a link to the proposed confetti spending. I guess we shoulnd also not be spending for meth for Palin's druggy's that she pals around with.

This is what you get when you have a college drop-out in your prime-time line-up. Add to that a sexual predator who graphically sexually harassed one of his female producers and had to pay her millions to stay silent along with a once-noble and once-intelligent lawyer who either sold out or dumbed herself down deliberately. What a trio. THANK YOU. njguy93@yahoo.com
