SUMMARY: CNN's Wolf Blitzer did not challenge Ari Fleischer's false claim that President Obama has a "proposal to eliminate deductions" for charitable donations and housing-related expenses. In fact, Obama's fiscal year 2010 budget proposal includes a provision to reduce to 28 percent the rate at which families earning more than $250,000 a year can take deductions for charitable donations, housing-related expenses, and other itemized deductions.

During the March 12 edition of CNN's The Situation Room, host Wolf Blitzer did not challenge former Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleischer's claim that President Obama "said no tax hikes for anybody who makes less than 250 [thousand dollars] a year, and then we learn that it's really 125,000 a year when you take a look at his proposal to eliminate deductions for charitable deductions and for housing deductions." In fact, Obama does not have a proposal to "eliminate deductions" for charitable donations and housing-related expenses. Rather, Obama's fiscal year 2010 budget proposal includes a provision to reduce to 28 percent the rate at which families earning more than $250,000 a year can take these and other itemized deductions.

As Media Matters for America documented, during the March 1 edition of CNN's State of the Union, host John King similarly failed to challenge Rep. Tom Price's (R-GA) false claim that Obama's budget proposal "will remove the ability to make charitable contributions deductible."

From Obama's budget proposal:

Reducing Itemized Deduction Rate for Families With Incomes Over $250,000. Lowering health care costs and expanding health insurance coverage will require additional revenue. In the health reform policy discussions that have taken place over the past few years, a wide range of revenue options have been discussed -- and these options are all worthy of serious discussion as the Administration works with the Congress to enact health care reform The Administration's Budget includes a proposal to limit the tax rate at which high-income taxpayers can take itemized deductions to 28 percent -- and the initial reserve fund would be funded in part through this provision. This provision would raise $318 billion over 10 years.

From the March 12 edition of CNN's The Situation Room:

BLITZER: And he said, Ari Fleischer, that there's not going to be any tax increases for the wealthiest 2 or 3 percent of the population, at least for two years, starting in 2011. They'll revert back to where they were during the Clinton administration in the '90s, a time of prosperity. Is that likely to reassure the business community?

FLEISCHER: No, I don't think so, Wolf. I think actually when you look at some of the things he said, then you examine the specifics, he said no tax hikes for anybody who makes less than 250 thou a year, and then we learn that it's really 125,000 a year when you take a look at his proposal to eliminate deductions for charitable deductions and for housing deductions. So there's still a lot of skepticism. But the bigger issue is: Will it do any good? Will it get the economy back on track?

BLITZER: What do you think, [Democratic strategist] Jamal [Simmons]? What did you think of that message that he delivered, specifically something that some Democrats might not like? He said he's not going to go with any protectionist policies. He wants free trade because that would be a huge blunder to go back to the tariffs of the trade protection that occurred in the '20s and '30s that exacerbated the Depression then.

Fleischer makes his living using words and he doesn't know the difference between reduce and elimnate? I think that's grammar school level. In reality, though, I think Fleischer knows the difference...

Are you surprised? He and a whole slew of other bushies can't find a real job so they have plenty of time on their hands to sit around and revise history. It's like watching them write their resume's on live TV.

I'd forgotten what a dishonest POS Fleischer was until he started making all these tv appearances again. He was particularly loathsome on Chris Matthews the other day feigning outrage when Matthews asked if he'd blame Obama for ignoring a memo that said 'Al Quaida determined to attack in the US.' He actually said 'How dare you?!?!?!?!"

It appears to me we're seeing the beginning of the attempted rebabilitation of the Bush legacy. These jokers have to live with themselves...they know how badly they screwed up.

History will show the Bush administration and its legacy for what it was nothing but criminals. I have heard people who were in the Texas government say Texas still has not recovered from Govener Bush. By the way Bush never signed or submitted a ballenced buget in his political career. In Texas at the time (may still be) the Lt Govenor is in charge of the Budget the Govenor never sees it.

Ari Fleischer is one of those pathetically weak people that allows themselves to be bought and sold by the powers that be! To turn tail from the truth for a few bucks.

While I may not have proof to this assumption... but I get the feeling that Ari would say the Earth was flat if the price was right.

Of course the flip side is... with all the political suicides that Dick Cheney seemed to have been behind with the Sy Hersch pronouncement... perhaps Ari is playing it safe by protecting himself from the wrath of Darth Cheney and his un-American evil dictorial ways?

      Or... Ari is simply scum?

It isn't surprising to read about this; it's consistent with all of Cheney's "dark side" comments.

Regarding Ari Fleischer of all shrub's press secretaries seemed the most sleazy, and a deliberate liar.

I hate to say this but any member of the US armed forces that took an order to kill a person other than by an act of war was violating the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Miltary Justice) and needs to be Court Marialed right away for this. Even the President and Vice President are not above the law. By the way the US is under treaties that ban any employe of our government from assinating anyone from a forigen country and the Constitution says we have to obay this and all other treaties.

Right on.  Creating an atmosphere in which murder is somehow okay is about the opposite of what we want, with the exception of the criminally insane.

I forgot to say part of the problem is that in the armed forces we are taught never to question orders. (I am a disabled Navy Vet.) This is great in a crisis but when we are told to do something illeagle we can then be the one punished instead of the person who issued the order.

this comes from a guy that blames Saddam for 9/11 still, so what can you expect. The shame is once more Blitzere lets the public down by not challenging him on the tax deduction issue.

I honestly think sometimes during these interviews a show's host misses things while trying to keep the show moving. In this case, I wouldn't be surprised if Blitzer had a producer talking into his earphone about cutting away to the next guy. Not making excuses for Blitzer or anyone else when they don't challenge falsehoods, but I think the format of these shows soetimes makes it easy for dishonest people to slip in whatever lies and misinformation they want.

It amazes me that everyone is surprised and shocked by the push from Bush/Cheyney alumni to rewrite history. If they have to lie to do it, they will. They know that Fox and sometimes CNN, especially Wolf Blitzer, will let them say anything. But the key is that this is part of the Bush/Cheyney "Restoration Tour" and it will continue. The media should be aware of this and they should challenge these falsehoods immediately. Thank you Chris Matthews.
