SUMMARY: Rush Limbaugh has repeatedly defended AIG from criticism of its employee retention bonuses; by contrast, he criticized the UAW in December 2008 for the contracts it had negotiated with automakers. Limbaugh stated: "[T]he Big Three are going down the tubes in part because of both the insane benefits for current workers, and the crazy compensation for retirees." He also said: "You can't pay people who produce nothing for you. And you can't pay a whole bunch of them over and over again who don't do anything, even if they have in the past."

As Media Matters for America has documented, Rush Limbaugh has repeatedly defended American International Group (AIG) from criticism of its employee retention bonuses. By contrast, in December 2008, Limbaugh criticized the United Auto Workers (UAW) for the contracts it had negotiated with automakers. During the December 12, 2008, broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio program, Limbaugh stated: "[T]he Big Three are going down the tubes in part because of both the insane benefits for current workers, and the crazy compensation for retirees." During the same broadcast, Limbaugh commented on retiree benefits in UAW contracts, stating: "You can't pay people who produce nothing for you. And you can't pay a whole bunch of them over and over again who don't do anything, even if they have in the past." Limbaugh added: "[L]ook at where it's got you. Your company's being bankrupt or bailed out or what-have-you. It ain't healthy. The purpose of this country is not to see to it that the United Auto Workers get paid when there aren't any cars being made. That's not the purpose of the United States of America."

As Media Matters has documented, Limbaugh declared on his March 17 show, "A lynch mob is expanding: the peasants with their pitchforks surrounding the corporate headquarters of AIG, demanding heads. Death threats are pouring in. All of this being ginned up by the Obama administration." In addition, on March 16, Limbaugh challenged a caller who opposed the bonuses. The caller said, "I do agree with [President] Obama trying to get these bonuses back from the AIG execs because, I mean, that's our money." Limbaugh replied, "Let me ask you a question. ... You have a company -- let's take AIG out of this 'cause they're so emotionally charged. Let's say that the company being bailed out is the XYZ Widget Company. ... We need them to manufacture widgets and sell widgets and so forth. So why in the world -- or how do you get to the point where you're going to bail out the company, but you don't want the employees to get paid?" Limbaugh later added: "[T]his is not just executives, but executives are employees, too. And in many of these firms, Nathan, their salaries are pretty small. They work on bonuses, via contract based on merit."

From the December 12, 2008, broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show:

LIMBAUGH: OK, so Toyota, $30 an hour versus the UAW, 28. So fire [UAW president Ron] Gettelfinger for getting you an inferior deal. But that's not the answer. See, I'll guarantee you something, Mr. Krueger. I'll bet you Toyota's not paying 700,000 people every year full wages and retirement who no longer work. I know the UAW has made some concessions on wages, but they haven't made any concessions on the stuff that's really costing.

I'm all for you guys making everything you can. I'm -- I've said this I don't know how many times. I'm not against anybody earning what they can get. You are worth what somebody will pay you, unless you're in a union, and then you're only worth what your thug leader can get for you. In this case, you're getting $2 an hour less than the people at Toyota are getting. If that's even true. I don't know that that's -- I've heard that the sum total of the UAW package is actually $55 an hour when you add everything up. I mean, I don't know what to believe about all this.

All I know is common economics, and that is you cannot pay 700,000 people every year for doing nothing as though they're still working full-time. You cannot do it. You cannot do it in perpetuity, or you are in heap big trouble. I don't care if somebody made that deal long ago or not. The bill has come due. What I do know is that in 2007, Mr. Krueger, Toyota and General Motors sold almost the identical number of cars -- 9.37 million. I also know that Toyota made $17 billion selling their 9.37 million cars. I know that General Motors lost something like $28 billion selling their 9.37 million cars.

Now, I don't know all the things that contribute to the difference in Toyota's profit and General Motors' loss, and I doubt that it's all labor costs. I don't think it's -- the disparity can be that large simply because of labor, but it's certainly a factor.

But I'm not against you guys. But I'm against -- I'm just a classic Econ 101 guy. There's just some things I know that used to be common sense. You can't pay people who produce nothing for you. And you can't pay a whole bunch of them over and over again who don't do anything, even if they have in the past. We had a deal, we had a deal -- yeah, well, look at where it's got you. Your company's being bankrupt or bailed out or what-have-you.

It ain't healthy. The purpose of this country is not to see to it that the United Auto Workers get paid when there aren't any cars being made. That's not the purpose of the United States of America. The purpose of the United States of America is not to have Democrats run around telling people that that's the kind of deal they can get if they elect Democrats.

[...]

LIMBAUGH: You have to look at earned benefits versus cash compensation. When Gettelfinger says that a UAW worker makes $28 an hour, and a Toyota worker makes $30 an hour, that's cash compensation. By the way, it happened for one year, I think, when the Toyota people bonused some of their employees six grand for a job well done. But we know that Toyota people don't make $2 an hour more than UAW people on the cash -- earned cash compensation side. They may have for a year or two, but it's -- otherwise, the UAW would be moaning and griping to high hell about their inferior contract.

Cash compensation, earned benefits. It's the earned benefits that make the UAW's compensation so much more, and that's why their union leaders can lie saying they earn less than Toyota. When they say that, they're only talking about the cash, the hourly wage.

Now, James Sherk at the Heritage Foundation says that the $70-an-hour -- it's actually $73 -- $73 an hour cost to employ one United Auto Worker does not include -- Snerdly, are you listening to this? -- $73 an hour that it costs to hire and employ one United Auto Worker in the Big Three, does not include the cost of supporting former workers. That is these -- the Big Three are going down the tubes in part because of both the insane benefits for current workers, and the crazy compensation for retirees.

Now, cash compensation is basically the hourly wage. Earned benefits also amount to $33.58 an hour, 46 percent of total compensation. Earned benefits include hospital, surgical, prescription drug benefits, dental and vision benefits, group life insurance, disability benefits, supplemental unemployment benefits. Pension payments to workers' pension accounts to be paid out at retirement, unemployment compensation and payroll taxes. That's the earned benefits.

And why do you think Toyota pays its American factory workers as much as they do and gives them bonuses???

They do it as a deterent to unionization!!!!

It's the existence of the UAW that spurs higher wages in non-UAW auto industry entities.

Thbe benifits are not insane today either that is a right wing lie. The average Americain auto work still maks less than half of what is being put out in the media including benifits. This is while the top executives make record times what the employes make. prior to Regan the average CEO made about 4 times what their average employe made and now make about 15 times the averagve employe. The real pay of top execs keeps going up while the real pay for the average employe keeps droping.

The funn y thing is that even though they do not know it the Americains that work for any Japanise auto maker is paying for a membership in the Japanise Union that they can not have because they are not in Japan. So they are the ones being ripped off. In japn if there is a union the employees pay for part of the membership and the employer pays part by law this includes employes outside of Japan.

So in reichwing world the workers don't deserve bonuses if the company is failing, but the CEO's who's decisions are responsible for the companies failure do. Gee, if I were a CEO, what incentive do I have to work hard to make my business successful when just cutting and running is gonna be profitable?

I don't exactly know what or where reichwing world is, but in Conservative world, nobody deserves a bonus if the business is failing. But since you brought up incentives, the exact same thing thing can be applied to those receiving handouts.....sorry, I meant stimulus. Why work when you can get more doing nothing?

Sorry for the lengthy cut and paste, Snoop, but this describes the reichwing agenda to a tee, as Dave attests to in his post as he spouts that handouts crap.

"In eight short years, conservatives have effectively bankrupted many state governments and left the fed in shambles. And now citizens have to “make tough decisions” and share the suffering equally across the land (unless of course, you’re part of that lucky 1% who co-opted the functions of government to serve their own ends… they’ll be cozy with their offshore bank accounts, golden parachutes, and permanent tax holidays).

Are you a teacher who educates our future citizens? Too bad. You’ve got to tighten your belt and let that job go. Manual laborer? Sorry but that job can earn more money for our shareholders if its done in Micronesia. Need a college degree? Prepare for indentured servitude because you’ll be working to pay us off for most of your adult life. Health care? Ha! That’s just a ponzi scheme dreamed up by a bunch of socialists.

Ever wonder how conservatives did all this?

Well here’s your very own how-to manual for getting Big Government out of the way so you and your buddies can horde all the wealth to yourselves and build your empire.

        Step 1: Blame the Individuals

Every battle has to have two sides, so you’ll need to divide the people against each other. This means that you’ll need to declare that “there’s no such thing as society” and focus the entire debate on the faults of individuals.

Enron screwed people over? That’s just a few bad apples. The business news a lap dog for corporate excess? That’s just Jim Cramer doing his thing. The economy in shambles? That’s just George W leaving his legacy.

And of course the housing crisis is the fault of greedy buyers. Industry can’t do right for us because of that welfare queen. And government can’t serve the people because of that corrupt politician and his special interest crony.

Get the people talking about individuals and it’ll be easy to blind them to the public infrastructure they depend on. You don’t want anyone to make a peep when we gut the schools, defund public works, and empty out the treasury. Those problems will just be fodder to throw at the sorry Democrat we’ll blame when the fit hits the shan.

        Step 2: Cut Taxes

Now that you’ve gotten everyone bickering about each other (and ignoring us), you can get to work dismantling the government. All you have to do is cut taxes. Yes, it’s that simple. One move and you get all the benefits of (1) weakening every social program; (2) making government services inadequate; (3) setting the stage for calling out “waste” and inefficiencies (more of that blame game!); (4) keeping your richest friends from ever having to pay for the infrastructure they exploit to make all that money; (5) getting nonprofits and opposition leaders in the government (progressives… eck!!) to spend all their precious resources fighting to keep things in the budget; and (6) outsourcing government operations to your buddies in the corporate world so they can profit from them.

This one move is strategic. It does all the work for you.

And when life starts looking dire, you get opportunities you never dreamed possible in a democracy.

        Step 3: Exploit Disaster

If you’ve managed to accomplish steps 1 and 2, people will be in a panic. And we all know that panicky people make rash decisions. Now is your chance to push that unpopular agenda through the cracks - disaster capitalism at its best!

Remember how we tricked the populace into an illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq to secure oil revenues? That wouldn’t have happened if people weren’t scared out of their wits by the fright of terrorism. Think people would have gone for No Child Left Behind and allowed tests to replace learning in the classroom? We had to fabricate a crisis (which took years of hard work to create) to push that one through. And you know that there’s no way we could take away so many civil liberties with the Patriot Act if the debate was drawn out for weeks under public scrutiny.

So there you have it. Three easy steps to destroy the government.

If you’re an overachiever (you know who you are!), you might even try giving away billions to your buddies in the banking industry when the bottom falls out. Or consider no-bid contracts to our old pals in the energy and defense sectors when no one is looking. Or, and this takes some special skill, you might call any efforts to “increase revenues” just another example of irresponsible spending that got us into this mess in the first place.

Note 1: Take care that progressives don’t ever learn about this strategy. It could be nullified and made ineffective by exposing our agenda, allowing people to organize, or letting government work well enough for people to start thinking that government isn’t inherently bad and (gasp!) that it might be useful for something other than empire-building.

Note 2: Want a more detailed discuss of how these ideas were so successfully implemented? This excellent series by Sara Robinson will help you learn how to take over the common sense of an entire culture:
        Part 1Part 2Part 3.

Note 3: Not satisfied with this strategy? Maybe you’ll want to build a different kind of politics that works in another way.

        "

Yeah, it's true. But we liberals are not helping ourselves one bit because the libs with money refuse to step up and help build lib radio. You may know that NovaM radio has gone bankrupt. Wealthy libs would rather wring their hands and complain that conservatives dominate the message.

Meanwhile, conservative donors have spent millions over the decades to fund reichwing think tanks, buy radio stations and train conservative spokes people and activists.

It's ridiculous to think about considering Thom Hartmann, Mike Malloy and Randi Rhodes crush the competition when they go head to head with Limbaugh, Hannity or O'Reilly.

I wish I could find it; it had some interesting bits. The thesis, though, was essentially this: The reason there is no liberal talk radio is that liberals don't need to have their dogma shouted at them every time they have a mentally unoccupied moment in the kitchen, in the car or at work, because left-leaning Americans are more likely to listen to more centrist news sources and interpret those stories themselves. Bingo.

Oh god, this is too funny to pass up!

New GOP Talking Points: Obama Administration Is “Most Politically Obsessed White House In History”

A Republican sends over a new set of GOP talking points for House conservatives — privately circulated this week to scores of GOP press secretaries on the Hill — that blasts the Obama administration as “radical” and “reckless” and the “most politically obsessed White House in history.”

The talking points also make the claim that “the only approach that has not been tried is the conservative approach.”

The talking points represent the first major move this cycle by House conservatives to create united conservative messaging front, according to Roll Call (sub. only). They were sent out by the Republican Study Committee, a group of more than 100 conservative House Repubs headed by GOP Rep Tom Price — a sign that House conservatives are hoping to capitalize on the crisis to mount a comeback for what they’re labeling the “conservative approach” to the economy.

Among the GOP talking points’ highlights on Obama and Dems:

              * “The budget is a radical proposal that will change the character of our nation, trampling on freedom and liberty.”

              * “The only approach that has not been tried is the conservative approach – limited bureaucracy, lower taxes, and responsible regulatory structures.”

              * “The administration is disingenuous, unfocused, and reckless.”

These claims are perhaps thrown into question when you think back to the approach employed by the Obama administration’s predecessors, but at least now you’ll know where this is coming from if you hear it.

The one trick pony never stops, does it? ;)

It never stops, it never will. The good news is this is a reactionary move by the Republicans as Obama has already set the narrative of conservative incompetence.

It's also good that the cons are so very predictable; that gives liberals the advantage if they will just use it. We know their moves inside out and we can inoculate ourselves against them if we, in the short term, take the initiative to counter their lies before they have a chance to spread them. And, in the long term, chip away at their myths of market fundamentalism and their lies about the role of good government.

It doesn’t matter how many wealthy libs step up to finance and build lib radio because the conservatives own the airwaves and control the markets.  When Bill Clinton signed the Telecom Act, corporate conservatives like Lowry Mays swooped in and bought up radio stations by the thousands.  It’s not a money issue, it’s an ownership issue.  Until the limitless ownership provision of the Telecom Act is repealed, liberal radio will never have a chance to compete or fail in a radio market that’s truly fee.

True. The best way to crack the conservative media monopoly is to crack the conservative media monopoly with some good old anti-trust laws. I curse Clinton for that Telecommunications Act, as well as, NAFTA. Them again, Clinton was the best Republican President this country has ever had. That's another discussion, though.

But there are alternatives in the in between time.

There's already a good working model on the internet called the Head On Radio Network (the H.O.R.N.) It's run by liberal stalwart Bob Kincaid and is available on ITunes. He's strapped for cash and runs the whole thing from his home (read: send him money.) Ben Burch from the WhiteRoseSociety.org also archives most every lib talker going and he runs live streams of Malloy, Hartmann and others. He too is strapped.

So it's not entirely a money problem, but some rich donors for these grassroots guys sure couldn't hurt. Republicans sure as hell are doing what they can to get their message out. Right now, they are investing millions in internet sites that mirror HuffPo, in that they are transforming themselves from political critique to journalistic reporting by scouting actual journalists to do actual reporting. We better not screw around, or it's going to be '96 all over again.

                Peace out.

          Problems with your plan.

Step one when there is blame and possible criminal activity the blame needs to be given and laws need to be enforced.

Step two tax cuyts have never worked in history because they only allow the greedy to be greedy. The period with the greates growth and best expanssion of the US economy had top tax rates of 90% and about 75% before Ronald regan cut these rates and drove up the US deficit. The only president to get rid of the deficit since then raised taxes and that is the solution.

Step three any exploiting of disasster only makes things worse.

People even in joke this is sad and not funny. That people suggest these solutions.

            We're in agreement.

That was a cut/paste and was intended by it's author (Joe Brewer) to be a humorous poke at the covert conservative slash and burn strategy of "public service." In fact, the title of the essay is, 'How to Destroy the government in Three Easy Steps.'

As with any good humor, it contains the sad truth. But check out the website, it's very informative in terms of how to talk about progressive politics.

Over on the far-left side of the top of the comment box is a capital "B" you can use to format bold text.

In addition, on the far-right side of that same comment box is an "HTML" button to open a new window in which you can review and insert your tags.

Then it sounds like your union either needs new leadership or a new contract.

If you're a pro athelete whose numbers continue to go up, you're in a position to renegotiate.  If your agent is unwilling to do so on your behalf, fire your agent.

Comparing the UAW with the AIG bonuses is a waste of time. They have no relationship at all with each other, but for Rush it makes good theater.

Au contraire, mon frere.  AIG bonuses and UAW worker/retiree compensation are defined by contracts.  In Rush's world, some contracts are more equal than others.

Yep, greed only works one way.  At the top.  "Greed is good" for the greedy rich but for the working man and woman who want their share, well, it's not so good. That's just getting too greedy.

      Tired of these people.

My father was one of those "pampered" auto workers who put in 43 years breaking his back for the company. Missed a total of 5 days in all those years because he had the audacity to break his arm and for a short period, as Rush says, "produced nothing." Now he's 86 and by Rush's estimation, he's just a drag on the company coffers. So...what to do? I suppose the practical thing would be for the company to terminate his pension and his supplemental health care. But wait...then he would be thrown on the mercy of the government. Guess that would make him a blood-sucking socialist parasite, wouldn't it? Wow. What a dilemma. Would pro-life Rush ever sanction euthanasia for retired auto workers? By his twisted "logic" that would seem to be the only remaining option.
