SUMMARY: On his Fox News show, Sean Hannity falsely claimed that President Obama "seemingly apologiz[ed] for our engagement in the war on terror" when Obama said "[t]he United States is not ... at war with Islam." In fact, in those same remarks, Obama also stated that "Iraq, Turkey, and the United States face a common threat from terrorism" and that "we are committed to a more focused effort to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat Al Qaeda."

During the April 6 edition of his Fox News program, Sean Hannity falsely claimed that during President Obama's recent trip to Europe, Obama "seemingly apologiz[ed] for our engagement in the war on terror, the war on terror that the 9-11 Commission report said was being waged on us that we weren't paying attention to." Hannity went on to state: "I view this as almost a Dixie Chick-type moment for him." Later in the program, Hannity said of Obama: "When he used the statement earlier that 'the United States is not and will never be at war with Islam,' I was like, 'OK.' There was no president that ever said we were going to have a war against Islam. And it seemed to me like when he was apologizing earlier last week, you know, to Europe for America's arrogance, that this was an attempt to apologize for the toppling of Saddam Hussein and the war on terror." Hannity later added that Obama was "basically apologizing for engaging in a war on terror when the whole conclusion of the 9-11 Commission was they were at war with us." In fact, while Obama stated during his April 6 speech before the Turkish parliament that "[t]he United States is not, and will never be, at war with Islam," Obama also stated that "Iraq, Turkey, and the United States face a common threat from terrorism," that "we share the common goal of denying Al Qaeda a safe-haven in Pakistan or Afghanistan," and that "we are committed to a more focused effort to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat Al Qaeda."

From Obama's speech:

Make no mistake, though: Iraq, Turkey, and the United States face a common threat from terrorism. That includes the al Qaeda terrorists who have sought to drive Iraqis apart and to destroy their country. And that includes the PKK. There is no excuse for terror against any nation. As President, and as a NATO ally, I pledge that you will have our support against the terrorist activities of the PKK. These efforts will be strengthened by the continued work to build ties of cooperation between Turkey, the Iraqi government, and Iraq's Kurdish leaders, and by your continued efforts to promote education and opportunity for Turkey's Kurds.

Finally, we share the common goal of denying al Qaeda a safe-haven in Pakistan or Afghanistan. The world has come too far to let this region backslide, and to let al Qaeda terrorists plot further attacks. That is why we are committed to a more focused effort to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda. That is why we are increasing our efforts to train Afghans to sustain their own security, and to reconcile former adversaries. And that is why we are increasing our support for the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan, so that we stand on the side of their security, their opportunity, and the promise of a better life.

Turkey has been a true partner. Your troops were among the first in the International Security Assistance Force. You have sacrificed much in this endeavor. Now we must achieve our goals together. I appreciate that you've offered to help us train and support Afghan security forces, and expand opportunity across the region. Together, we can rise to meet this challenge like we have so many before.

I know there have been difficulties these last few years. I know that the trust that binds the United States and Turkey has been strained, and I know that strain is shared in many places where the Muslim faith is practiced. So let me say this as clearly as I can: The United States is not, and will never be, at war with Islam. (Applause.) In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical not just in rolling back the violent ideologies that people of all faiths reject, but also to strengthen opportunity for all its people.

As Media Matters for America documented, on the April 3 edition of his Fox News show, Hannity played a truncated clip of Obama saying in a speech that day in Strasbourg, France: "In America, there's a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America's shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive." Hannity then said: "And the liberal tradition of blame America first, well, that's still alive." Hannity later asked: "Why is there this anti-Americanism in Europe?" However, immediately after the part of the speech Hannity played, Obama criticized anti-Americanism in Europe and Europeans who "choose to blame America for much of what's bad," and also referred to "the good that America so often does in the world."

From the April 6 edition of Fox News' Hannity:

HANNITY: And welcome to Day Number 77 of the age of Obama, and it is looking dangerous, and that is our headline on this Monday night. And joining us now with more on the president's trip is former Clinton adviser, author of the best-selling book Fleeced. DickMorris.com, where you can get videos and his columns for free when you log on. Dick, good to see you. Thanks for being with us.

MORRIS: Good to see you, Sean.

HANNITY: All right, so it starts out with the president of the United States of America telling the rest of the world that America is an arrogant country and then seemingly apologizing for our engagement in the war on terror, the war on terror that the 9-11 Commission report said was being waged on us that we weren't paying attention to. Now, I can't -- I view this as almost a Dixie Chick-type moment for him. Your thoughts?

[...]

HANNITY: When he used the statement earlier that "the United States is not and will never be at war with Islam," I was like, "OK." There was no president that ever said we were going to have a war against Islam. And it seemed to me like when he was apologizing earlier last week, you know, to Europe for America's arrogance, that this was an attempt to apologize for the toppling of Saddam Hussein and the war on terror.

JOHN BOLTON (former U.S ambassador to the United Nations): Yeah. He is still trying to distinguish himself from the Bush administration by creating a false narrative about his predecessor. Look, over the last 20 years, the United States has gone to war to expel Iraq from Kuwait and protect Saudi Arabia -- both Arab countries -- defended Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo, overthrown the tyrannical regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. There are an enormous amount of things we've done to benefit Muslims in countries all over the world. We have nothing to apologize for.

HANNITY: Yeah, well, I think Barack Obama -- and this is the message that I think is becoming loud and clear, with the defense cuts, the cuts in strategic defense, the apologies for America, America he calls arrogant, basically apologizing for engaging in a war on terror when the whole conclusion of the 9-11 Commission was they were at war with us, and I think we're headed back here. Now, we have -- General [David] Petraeus is predicting that Israel is very likely going to strike Iran's nuclear facilities. Do you think Barack Obama, based on these actions, is showing any strength that he would back Israel in that attack, which I would deem necessary at this point?

Thank you media matters for making Hannity accountable for his lack of telling the entire truth to his audience about the statments made by the President.

Too bad MMFA can't stop the ignorant 28% from believing Hannity. The press was never meant to be a source for validating what you want to believe. Look what's happened by doing so. They should take Murdoch, shove him in an empty wine barrel, nail it shut and put it on a slow boat to china.

Snoopy, I am devistated by your lack of humanity. Sealing Murdoch in a barrel. Or did you just forget to add punching 5 air holes on each side of the barrel, lowering it into the water and pulling it from behind the boat with a long chain.

But how would you do it with Hannitys' nose attached to Murdochs' bottom?

Oh the Humanity of it all.

It's hard to believe that Sean Hannity could actually become a parody of himself...but that's what he is. For pure entertainment watch his breathless introduction to his show every night in which, night after night, he summarizes his argument about why America is over...finished, done, kaput, all because of what Barack Obama has done in less than three months in office. If someone actually believed all of Hannity's BS they'd be inclined to shoot themselves. Honestly, it's like watching a Steven Colbert parody, except Hannity is truly evil. I don't wish Hannity any ill will in this life, though...I just hope there is a God and that Hannity burns in hell for eternity. ;>)

Succinctly stated, Hannity is a pathological liar. He even won an award for lying. He probably teaches his children that it is admirable and patriotic to lie and create divisiveness in furtherance of one's political philosophy.

I wonder if he lets Little Dickie Morris alone in a room with his wife. Or for that matter, KKKarl Rove or Col. Ollie North or even Dick Cheney(the real one, not the poster). And as stated before, Hannitys' wife is either stupid/naive or loves the money. How about an interview with her? Why doesn't somebody go after Hannitys' family..not physically but through the media. Ask them questions about him. He is a MEDIA person. He is open game.

I hope his kids never read that SeannieTheUnrepentantSissyBoy is a liar. I could damage their futures.

Sean has Attention Deficit Disorder. He can't seem to get all of President Obama's speeches in context. It's a pattern with him now. Must be all those larger words and even larger ideas than that previous President that Sean groveled to.

This is a conspiracy of silence in the whole Fox News organization. The producers on this show parse, scrap and meander about all of the President's quotes (if there had been a similar effort with BushieCo he probably would have been impeached) and then feed it to the dead soul of Paycheck Hannity. Sean, stuff your blood money where the sun don't shine.

Hey Sean- America is NOT "at war with Islam," and never has been.  Which should explain to you and your ilk why we aren't currently at war with or occupying Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen, Pakistan, Indonesia and large parts of India-- and why we haven't established internment camps for America's rather large Muslim population.

unless hannity is a complete imbecile with a preschool reading level (hardly outside the realm of possibilty), he knows perfectly well that he is misrepresenting and misinterpreting president obama's remarks. he must feed this swill to his cash cow audience of right-wing lunatics and morons to stay in the obfuscation business. his day-and-night baseless defamation of our new president is at the least irresponsible and at worst downright dangerous. i would never wish to trample on hannity's freedom of speech, but deliberate, conscious lies are not protected speech the last time i looked. it only takes one nut, and sean hannity is trying desperately to reach him.

reason i mention it cause the stupid idiot, like hannity has just done, had the nerve the claim that president obama was submitting to Muslims and Shuster called him out.

"Seemingly..."  That's the right wingnutz' operative term.  Ole BlunderRush doesn't even pretend to quote President Obama.  He just tells his willing listeners to open their mouths and he will drive his regurgitated baby food into their maws.

Sean Hannity and the whole wacky crew over at FoxNoise are becoming more irrelevent with each passing day!

The more the corporate right-wing rails against President Obama and the Democrats and liberalism and grogressive ideals... the more people will see that these clowns have no love of country and care about their self interests at the expense of the rest of us!

Since President Obama is not a liberal... I don;t think the right-wing has much to fear except for their own personal self loathing!

Slowly... FoxNoise is dying a slow death... and no Fairness Doctrine or some crazy lefty law will need to be made to finish them off!

By simply being on the air and spouting off their moldy oldie talking points... they will, by their own doing, bring themselves to ruin!

I for one won't miss them!

regardless how much of his speech you play or not he definately was not a strong voice for the American People. He was wimpy and threw us under the bus. Lets see what he gets in return for kissing butt over in Europe, so far not much

I say this often about Cons complaining about lies and that is TOO BAD.

The world had to put up with Pres. Cheney and his little puppy dog George for 8 years and you want to "complain" about someone first 70 days in office. TOO BAD. Your is that of 28% of this country. TOO BAD. Your side had a majority but ruined it and the country..TOO BAD for the rest of us. Will your voice be heard, it just was. So, TOO bad if it isn't loud enough.

And what did Pres. Obama say that was so terrible.

P.S. Your whole post is based on the American people..seems that 72% are happy about it...TOO BAD. We are Americans also. Or don't you believe that either.

If he only gets moral support it would be far more than Bush ever got.Reducing tensions alone is something that can be beneficial when a new crisis comes up later on.Reality has shown  that a calmer more conciliatory attitude is needed especially now.Don't we want every country to cooperate in seeking terrorists within their borders? We don't get their best effort when we alienate them and don't "listen " to them.Whether you like it or not he needs to clean up our act.It is a fact that GW Bush failed at obtaining a real coalition of support on addressing global terrorism!!Next time if we have a  real war maybe more countries will help finance it or provide soldiers and support personnel!!
