Human Events allowed McInerney to invoke false ACORN bogeyman in defense-budget attack

April 07, 2009 8:07 pm ET

SUMMARY: Human Events uncritically reported retired Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney's false claim that the "stimulus package ... gives $3-billion to ACORN."

An April 7 Human Events article uncritically reported retired Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney's false claim that the "stimulus package ... gives $3-billion to ACORN," which McInerney made while criticizing Defense Secretary Robert Gates' military budget recommendations. Human Events reported: " 'I am appalled at the decisions just made by the secretary, as are other very senior Air Force general officers,' retired Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney (U.S. Air Force), told HUMAN EVENTS following U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates' press conference yesterday. ... 'Four percent [of GDP] for baseline Defense budget is certainly not too much to ask,' says McInerney. 'After all, we spent $787-billion on a stimulus package that gives $3-billion to ACORN.' " As Media Matters for America has documented, ACORN is a popular scapegoat for conservatives, and the claim that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides money for ACORN is false.

Media Matters previously documented that as a Fox News analyst prior to the Iraq war, McInerney made a series of predictions regarding the impending invasion that later proved false.

<ahem> Somebody back in DC might consider doing a little digging into General Tom's lobbying for the past 8 years. Notice how a few of the companies on which he's been an advisor or board member got nice govamint contracts.

General Tom wasn't merely good at getting DoD contracts for his client firms, his friends in he govamint spread it around to other agencies.  Search for his son's name with companies getting govamint contracts. Amazing what touting the war in Iraq will do for your progeny.

Which would explain why so many democrats support the war effort. It seems they are just as good at receiving  govamint contracts as republicans.

That's not surprising considering the support the illegal drug industry gets from left-wingers. If you check your history, you'll find Clinton awarded Halliburton a no-bid contract during (or after) the Bosnian war, instead of another capable company called Dynacorp. It seems that Halliburton was just one of only 3 companies world-wide that could perform the job being asked of them during the Iraq mission. I won't say they did a great job, but how much time was afforded to allow the bidding process to go through? Clinton's no-bid award didn't have the same time constraint, so why were they awarded that contract? Considering the memory circumstances of so many left-wingers, we may never find out.

As expected, after trolling the boards with meaningless comments, you run and hide when FACTS are brought forward.

Hw refreshing that a military officer can be bought and spew out old news, that has been debunked. Doesn't the Lt Gen check facts first before lowering himself to the Hannity level ?

I've admitted here before that I'm on the Human Events mailing list. An old buddy put me on it as a joke a couple years ago, and I can't quit it. This may be hard to believe to anybody who hasn't visited the site (and don't visit the site if you don't have a good Spam filter) but it makes Fox Nooz look like an actual news outlet by comparison.

I get the intellectual diaper-pudding of Newt Gingrich, Ann Coulter and Chuck Norris in my inbox. Their confused ramblings are amazing enough, but they're often followed by  threads of 1,000+ comments, mostly thanking them for telling the truth, in response to essays  full of BS that shouldn't fool a 6 year old..

          Just an example of the sort of brain-dead blathering that works on the Human Events "target demo", from Ann Coulter;

I notice that liberals have not challenged the overall thesis of my rocketing bestseller, "Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and Their Assault on America," which is that liberals always play the victim in order to advance, win advantages and oppress others.

Uhh, Ann, you just called the people you're accusing of playing the victim "oppressors", meaning you're playing the victim. Nobody has to challenge you when you knock yourself out climbing into the ring.

col. i don't belong to their mailing list.....but i do check the site if for no other reason to see what idiotic statements are being made, i check WND for the same reason.

it pains me to see Chuck Norris and Ted Nugent involving themselves in this.....

Funny thing is, I have a conservative friend who is constantly babbling on and on about this book by Coulter, and how she PROVES without a doubt that liberals just play the victim all of the time. I then ask him about how conservative always blame the media for being "liberally biased". Isn't that playing the victim? No he responds, that's just the "truth" of the matter, that's not playing the victim. I continue from there. "So you're telling me that when Sarah Palin blames the loss of the election on the media and not their f'ed up platform that's not playing the victim?" He responds, "Nope, that all HAPPENED." I ask for examples of the media being mean to poor Sarah, he brings up they talked about her daughter's pregnancy. Umm, no, she brought that up, and nobody in the media was cruel about it. Funny enough, he can't come up with one really good example of the media being "mean" or biased towards Palin.

Thing of it is, is that sure, sometimes people play the victim. But far more often than not, I see it being done by republicans.

Gen. McInerney said "'Four percent [of GDP] for baseline Defense budget is certainly not too much to ask."  The Washington Spectator had a great issue on this topic.  When did 4% of GDP become the Magic Number?

And when did we drop the responsibility to spend that money wisely?  President Obama's administration is attempting to restore order to the process.  More power to them!

These people should "really" stop with the 'false accusations' about Acorn because when they get called upon to back up their 'false accusations' they are like deers in headlights.  Just ask Lou Dobbs when he was 'falsely accusing' Acorn of being investigated in 13 states last night on his show and his Guest asked Lou to prove with facts from the Justice Department if what he stated was true.  Lou "could NOT".  So, Lou told the lady he would contact the Justice Dept. (today) and get back with her with his findings.  Too funny to watch these guys "NOT" be able to back up their smears when called to do so, huh?

I have noticed in the past few weeks, more guests are openly questioning pundits assertions. I have also noticed Keith Olbermann becoming somewhat more hostile to the Obam administration for not going after the misdeeds of the Cheney-bush era ( and it is not an accident i wrote it in that order ). The truth will come out eventually

Maybe a little homeworks should be done on acorn...especially the mortgages that they pushed..When it was on their website...these are the requirements:

      No verification of employment

      No verification of social security

      No verification of funds

No wonder we are in the mess we are in...it is good to be able to get a mortgage and help with a mortgage if you are a minority...but this was carrying too far...
