SUMMARY: Sean Hannity falsely claimed that President Obama has proposed to cut "our defenses dramatically." In fact, the Obama administration has proposed increasing defense spending by billions of dollars over the amount enacted in fiscal year 2009.

During the April 8 edition of his Fox News program, Sean Hannity again falsely claimed that President Obama has proposed to "cut not only missile defense, but our defenses dramatically." In fact, the Obama administration has proposed increasing defense spending by billions of dollars over the amount enacted in fiscal year 2009. As CNN.com noted on April 6, "The proposed overall fiscal year 2010 Defense Department budget is almost $534 billion, or nearly $664 billion when including the costs of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The current Pentagon budget totals slightly over $513 billion, or almost $655 billion including the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts." Media Matters for America has documented numerous instances of Hannity repeating this false claim. According to the White House, the administration's proposed budget for fiscal year 2010 requests $533.7 billion for the Department of Defense, "an increase of four percent from the 2009 enacted level of $513.3 billion," plus $130 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2010.

From the April 8 edition of Fox News' Hannity:

HANNITY: This has been, in my view, a very dangerous week for this country -- and I'm being serious. When we have Democrats kissing up to a brutal, murdering dictator by the name of Fidel Castro -- we just played that tape for you just moments ago -- we're going to meet with now Iran without preconditions; we have missiles fired off over North Korea, and the president says they broke the rules, we're going to go back to the U.N., and he's going to cut, not only missile defense, but our defenses dramatically.

I'm thinking they don't understand the nature of the last 100 years in human history and how many 100-plus million people died under dictatorial regimes. Am I wrong?

Educate yourself people.  Obama is making or country weaker and more prone to terrorist attacks everyday.  He is cutting defense just like Clinton...look where that got us....thousands of Americans died.  Wake up to what is going on....your life may depend on it.

Another poster, on another thread, pointed out that, if the 4% increase in defense spending is really a decrease, then the top 2% of Americans (those making over $250,000) are likewise going to see a DECREASE in their taxes in 2011.

Talk about trying to have it both ways!

Obama proposes - and gets - a tax CUT for 95% of Americans . . . and Hannity screams about a tax INCREASE.

His tax proposal for 2010 (when the Bush tax cuts expire) cuts taxes for 95 percent of Americans and raises taxes on two to three percent of Americans.  And the stimulus bill included a $400 tax credit for single filers and $800 for married couples which applied to most Americans.  It amounts to an extra $13.00 a week in take-home pay and will take effect in June.

95% of americans dont pay taxes, so how can you give a tax cut to someone who doesnt pay them?

By Roxana Tiron Posted: 04/07/09 08:01 PM [ET] Congress has little chance of stopping President Obama’s sweeping changes to the military budget, which would scrap several high-profile weapons programs.

Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have stirred a hornet’s nest in targeting six major programs for the chopping block. But congressional and defense-industry sources said it will be difficult to oppose the popular Obama, who will argue his proposed cuts will benefit soldiers fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and better use limited resources during a recession.

So what do you call this, sounds like to me there are going to be defense cuts.

They're cutting in some areas and increasing in others which will result in an overall increase of four percent in defense spending.  Frankly, I think we should be looking to decrease the defense budget in areas except military pay and subsistence allowances.

You mean "sweeping changes" like no-bid contracts worth billions to Cheney's cronies?  Maybe our troops will finally get the equipment/supplies they need to defend themselves versus having to wade through scrap piles or have their family ship them stuff.

-- an increase of four percent from the 2009 enacted level -- mmfa

I guess if mmfa can continue to repeat...so can I.

Pres.Obama's base defense budget (excluding Iraq, Afghanistan, etal) reduces the rate of spending from 4% in 2010...to about 1.5% in years 2011-2013.

This fact mmfa conveniently fails to report.

This is common for Sean to omit parts of a story for political GOP gain. He reads his talking points from conservative newspapers and magazines (online and print, including World Net Daily and Human Events). He's not an honest man, but we already knew that. He has no integrity or morals, and has no problem lying to his audience. As a fellow broadcaster, I apologize for this man's ignorance.
