Fox Nation's revolt steeped in ... demagoguery

April 09, 2009 6:41 pm ET

SUMMARY: Under the headline "No Taxation Without Representation!" The Fox Nation -- Fox News' allegedly bias-free website -- promoted "tea party" protests, which Fox News itself has characterized as a response to the Obama administration's fiscal policies.

Under the headline "No Taxation Without Representation!" The Fox Nation -- Fox News' new and allegedly bias-free website -- linked to an April 9 FoxNews.com article about the Tax Day "tea parties" -- protests that Fox News itself has repeatedly characterized as a response to the Obama administration's fiscal policies. The Fox Nation also featured a graphic depicting a tea-party protest opposite an engraving of the 1773 Boston Tea Party with the accompanying text: "A Revolt Steeped In ... History." The Fox Nation headline and graphic are just the latest example of Fox News' aggressive promotion of the tea-party protests, despite the network's claims to fair and balanced reporting.

Notably, the FoxNews.com article to which The Fox Nation linked quoted tea-party promoter Michael DePrimo of the American Family Association as saying: "It's not exactly taxation without representation. It's more taxation with inadequate representation."

Their lack of "representation" could be because Republicans can't win elections!!

        Very much matches my observation:

        NO representation WITHOUT taxation.

... which I first applied to the religious bloc to prohibit their votes and partisanship until churches begin paying property taxes and profit taxes.

Now it seems fit to the filthy rich non-payers of taxes, the basest Republicans.

First pay taxes.  Then have representation.

        NO REPRESENTATION without TAXATION.

      I'm confused.

How can it be called taxation without representation when every house seat was up for grabs in the 2008 election?

So aren't the districts being represented according to the will of the electorate?

Does Fox have a problem with the way we elect congressmen and senators?

Maybe they're just more anxious to see Franken seated than we think they are.

Just to repeat it here. This "grassroots bipartisan" event which consists of only righwinger politicians and rightwinger shills speaking to rightwinger crowds is really run by rightwinger organizations and think tanks. This info can be found at think progress, BTW.

Despite these attempts to make the “movement” appear organic, the principle organizers of the local events are actually the lobbyist-run think tanks Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works. The two groups are heavily staffed and well funded, and providing all the logistical and public relations work necessary for planning coast-to-coast protests:

Freedom Works staffers coordinate conference calls among protesters, contacting conservative activists to give them “sign ideas, sample press releases, and a map of events around the country.”

Freedom Works staffers apparently moved to “take over” the planning of local events in Florida.

Freedom Works provides how-to guides for delivering a “clear message” to the public and media.

Freedom Works has several domain addresses — some of them made to look like they were set up by amateurs — to promote the protests.

Americans for Prosperity is writing press releases and planning the events in New Jersey, Arizona, New Hampshire, Missouri, Kansas, and several other states.

This type of corporate ‘astroturfing‘ is nothing new to either organization. While working to promote Social Security privatization, Freedom Works was caught planting one of its operatives as a “single mom” to ask questions to President Bush in a town hall on the subject. Last year, the Wall Street Journal exposed Freedom Works for similarly building “amateur-looking” websites to promote the lobbying interests of Dick Armey, the former Republican Majority Leader who now leads Freedom Works and is a lobbyist for the firm DLA Piper.

Americans for Prosperity is run by Tim Phillips, who was Ralph Reed’s former partner in the lobbying firm Century Strategies. The group is funded by Koch family foundations — a family whose wealth is derived from the oil industry. Indeed Americans for Prosperity has coordinated pro-drilling ‘grassroots‘ events around the country.

      But my personal favorite?

But Cavuto’s claim ignores a Fox News poll released last week, which found that only 36 percent of Americans said they would “be willing to join” a “tea party” protest.

36%, which is the same number of people who have professed their hatred of everything Obama. A minority of useful idiots, if you will.

It really is. I have never seen a more blatant and, yes, revolting display of partisanship by a news organization.

If this will not lead to a boycott of FNC, I don't know what will. And it shouldn't just be Democrats who do it, every politician with an ounce of self-respect should denounce this travesty.

        Disgraceful.

I bet Bachman will be there at one of these events no doubt in my mind. But then again, she's not respectful of, well, anything at all really. She's a dolt. A mind numbing idiot. I still can't believe the good people of Minnesota elected her, but I digress.

I love their headling, "Taxation Without Representation!". Apparently, they forgot that we had elections in November of 2008 to decide this point exactly. As someone else said, all House seats were up for re-election, and a share of the Senate seats were also up for grabs. All of these people complaining that they don't have representation, actually DO have representation. I can't believe just how ignorant so many can be really.

Also, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. To tie this back to some acts our founding fathers did is pretty disgusting as well. They apparently don't know much about history, and or what happened during these things. I suggest they read a few books, or even watch some History Channel if they don't want to read.

Can we now stop pretending Foxs News is a news channel -- not news to anyone on this site, I know. And as such can we now stop allowing them the freedoms and courtesies given the press -- example sitting in the White House press room and on the daily briefings. We can work out from there to the libel and slander charges.

Guess these folks don't remember that their patron Saint of Taxes, Ronnie Reagan, raised a bunch of taxes

Reagan may have resisted calls for tax increases, but he ultimately supported them.

In 1982 alone, he signed into law not one but two major tax increases. The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act (TEFRA) raised taxes by $37.5 billion per year and the Highway Revenue Act raised the gasoline tax by another $3.3 billion.

According to a recent Treasury Department study, TEFRA alone raised taxes by almost 1 percent of the gross domestic product, making it the largest peacetime tax increase in American history. An increase of similar magnitude today would raise more than $100 billion per year.

In 1983, Reagan signed legislation raising the Social Security tax rate.(doubled it actually)

This is a tax increase that lives with us still, since it initiated automatic increases in the taxable wage base. As a consequence, those with moderately high earnings see their payroll taxes rise every single year.

In 1984, Reagan signed another big tax increase in the Deficit Reduction Act.

This raised taxes by $18 billion per year or 0.4 percent of GDP. A similar-sized tax increase today would be about $44 billion.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 raised taxes yet again.

Even the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which was designed to be revenue-neutral, contained a net tax increase in its first 2 years.

And the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 raised taxes still more.

The year 1988 appears to be the only year of the Reagan presidency, other than the first, in which taxes were not raised legislatively. Of course, previous tax increases remained in effect. According to a table in the 1990 budget, the net effect of all these tax increases was to raise taxes by $164 billion in 1992, or 2.6 percent of GDP. This is equivalent to almost $300 billion in today's economy.

You must be kidding. Why does anyone take right wing lunatics seriously? They are overtly trapped in the past, and proud to be belligerent. The greatest pleasure that they experience is a shallow sense of superiority over those who foolishly believe them. They create frenzies over nothing. Some of its followers wouldn't know who to hate if it was not for the repetitive misleading guidance of a leadership that is addicted to making fools of its followers. They have nothing but contempt for true believers, yet true believers are loyalists. It is like being a friend of a person who can't resist peeing on you.
