SUMMARY: Echoing a Drudge Report headline, Larry Kudlow asserted that "Obama supporters [are] saying he's the best president in history." Kudlow cited no examples of Obama supporters who have said this, and the Politico article to which the Drudge headline linked contained no such assertions from Obama supporters.

On the April 23 edition of CNBC's The Kudlow Report, host Larry Kudlow asserted that "Obama supporters [are] saying he's the best president in history," but cited no examples of Obama supporters who have said this. Kudlow's remarks echoed a headline that appeared that day on the Drudge Report, "The Hundred Days: Supporters Insist He Is Greatest President Ever." As Media Matters for America Senior Fellow Eric Boehlert noted, the Drudge headline linked to a Politico article that did not cite anyone saying Obama is the "greatest president ever" or suggest that anyone is saying that. Boehlert added: "Drudge just made that up. Fantasized it. Manufactured it. Describe it however you want. But there's zero in that Politico piece that even remotely hints at the headline Drudge dreamt up; a headline designed to portray Democrats as loony Obama worshipers."

From the Drudge Report:

From the April 23 edition of CNBC's The Kudlow Report:

KUDLOW: I want to run the table on four or five really important issues. First of all, we're coming down to the first 100 days. Obama supporters saying he's the best president in history. You got a quick thought on that one?

SEN. JON KYL (R-AZ): Well --

KUDLOW: It's an easy one.

KYL: -- if the test is: Has he spent more money than any president in history? I answer, yes, in the first 100 days. How about increasing the debt? Yes. As a matter of fact, the budget that both the House and Senate have passed doubles the debt in five years, triples it in 10 years.

I suppose this is a variation of the Straw Man fallacy.  Limbug does this kind of thing all the time.  During the campaign he often referred to Obama as the "Messiah", as if that's what Democrats thought.

Like most of the Troglodyte Propaganda techniques, it works very well on the weak-minded.  I'll bet that, if you took a poll among Rush's listeners, most would say that Democrats called Obama the "Messiah".

Right, Nerzog. After continually lowering the bar for W, citing anything halfway competent he did as a wonderful surprise, the media had to fabricate some sort of "perfection" that Obama supporters were bestowing on him. That way, any minor gaffe Obama makes can be framed as a complete repudiation of him and his supporters.

I brought this up a while back when one of the wingnuts here kept referring to Olbermann as "St. Keith".Never mind the varying opinions of KO from liberals, and the critcism directed at him by many on the left when it's deserved, setting somebody up as infallible in the minds of their supporters makes criticism much easier.

That's exactly it.  They assume that we worship our leaders the same way they do.  And when they do acknowledge our internal squabbles, they mock them as weakness, as opposed to recognizing them as strength.  (OTOH - having a flock of cult-like, zombie/sheep/drone-like followers is pretty handy come election time.  Just ask Carl Rove.

I sure hope this variation works for them.  If it doesn't, the next likely step is tales of Obama shrines being built on top of demolished churches, where groups of Democrats engage painting Obama portraits using the blood of fetuses.

I'd say let's let Obama finish out his second term, before we decide who was the best in history at leading our country. They're mad that their messiah, George W. turned out to be such a dud. I don't think anyone is saying that Obama is the best ever, and if they are, they need a reality check, because we're only 100 days into his first term.

Same here, and before some conservative comes in here and says something about me not giving W the same wait and see attitude, I did. It's just that after a couple of years, W disappointed me in ways I thought not possible.

I too have seen some things that Obama has done, or not done, that I don't like. An example, gays in the military, and gay marriage are just a couple of items I'd like to see him grab onto and change his opinions on.

I don't remember what in particular convinced me, but I remember debating die-hard Republicans on a local Newspaper forum and being called un-American, traitor and coward because I didn't think invading Iraq was the smartest thing to do.

I remember watching them vilify Scott Ritter and Sean Penn for saying that there were no WMD.  I'm no expert, and the case seemed pretty thin to me, even then, but I think I was turned off by the blatant jingoism of the Republicans as much as anything.

For me the final nail was Powells speech. I already had lots of doubts overall and KNEW they were lying about some things. That was clear when they made the office of special plans because they werent getting the intelligence they wanted from the CIA. You only do that to cook your own. The Powell speech though HAD to have their A material. If they got the UN on their side the American people would have been gung ho. I thought it was thin when I heard it then watched the next couple of days as it was just plain eaten alive. When THAT collapsed I knew the whole Iraq agenda was built on lies. They had ZILCH.

That's not true.  They have a history that says Bill Clinton said no thanks when Sudan offered him Osama bin Laden on a silver platter in 1998 (or whenever it was.)  Actually if there is any truth to this claim of an offer from Sudan and if Clinton had accepted bin Laden would've become the hero of the right.  There were no charges against him in the US at the time and most people didn't know who he was.  Clinton would likely have been impeached for imprisoning this 'innocent' man and Osama would be a guest commentator on FOX and maybe have his on talk radio show on Clear Channel.

They can't bring that up any more because W let bin Laden go at Tora Bora. So, if anyne does say that, it's an alternate history and doesn't contradict the universe's creation via the 9/11 Big Bang.

I know that this is an extreme hypothetical, but let's take the time machine back to say, oh, 1997.

October 10, 1997, terrorist fly planes into the WTC, Pentagon, and crash in a field in PA. President Clinton usurps the Constitution, illegally wiretaps American citizens in the name of keeping our country safe, tortures prisoners captured on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq, after he wrongfully invaded the latter.

What do you think the republicans would be saying, or what would they have done? They would have impeached the guy. No ifs, ands, or buts. And they would have been right in that case I think.

Fast forward to now. They supported W and everything he did (almost everything). And now all of the above is somehow OK? And we shouldn't look back?

Anyway, you'll never hear anyone on the left proclaim that Obama is the Messiah of anything. You'll hear us support him when we agree with him. You'll hear us disagree with him when we do. The only people calling him the chosen one, or the messiah, are the right wing crazies who seem to think that's what we think of him.

It's raising/lowering the bar.  The republicans and the righty media lowered the bar for Bush that when he managed to utter a complete, coherent sentence they lauded him.

Now they've moved the bar so far up for Obama so that when anything doesn't work out perfectly they can criticize him.

Rescues that boat captain? Couldn't have been Obama giving the go ahead order, must have been the on site commander, and why would Obama want to shoot poor black kids anyway?

      That's funny . . . I seem to recall:

      - Tweety Matthews comparing Bush to both Churchill and Lincoln

      - Someone saying Bush should be on Mt. Rushmore

      - seeing a bumper sticker that read "W08"

I can attest that I have said publicly that Obama has the makings of being one of the best presidents we will have ever had... but I to have never heard anyone say that he is the best ever... only that he is in a position to be one of the best!

To soon to tell... but I would say, other than a few iff'y moves: the recent stimulus package giving way to much to the wealthy (again!) and the hem/hawing of not yet prosecuting the criminals of the prior eight years... so far... so good!

As for Kudlow... how exactly do you have a show?
