SUMMARY: Asked about his 2008 statement that "I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out," Michael Savage said it was "said in jest."

On the May 7 edition of CNN's American Morning, co-host Kiran Chetry asked radio host Michael Savage about his July 16, 2008, statement that "I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out." Savage then said to Chetry: "That's an absurd statement that was said in jest. They understand that." After Media Matters for America highlighted his comments, which generated extensive criticism, Savage claimed that the comments were "take[n] out of context," a claim Media Matters rebutted.

On the July 16, 2008, broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Savage claimed that autism is "[a] fraud, a racket." Savage went on to say, "I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' " Savage had previously described autism as a "phony disease."

From the May 7 edition of CNN's American Morning:

CHETRY: Why don't you clear up some of the misconceptions? I want to ask you about your views on some of the following things. What are your views on homosexuality, for example?

SAVAGE: My religious training teaches me that it's something to shun, and when a society starts to embrace homosexuality and other behaviors, where does the society end up?

CHETRY: And what do you say to people who say, you know, "I was born this way? I didn't ask to, you know, be attracted to one sex or the other and I shouldn't be treated differently?"

SAVAGE: Well, you could be born many different ways -- it doesn't mean this is a -- it doesn't mean that a person has to follow their urges. I mean, there are many urges that people have, and if a society starts to engage homosexuality on an equal footing with heterosexuality, you end up with no society. Where is the reproduction supposed to come from? Have we lost all sense of father, mother, and family?

CHETRY: You once said about autism --

SAVAGE [audio clip]: You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is.

SAVAGE: That's an absurd statement that was said in jest. They understand that. First of all, I come from a family where I had a handicapped brother, which I don't want to go into. And I have given money, I have supported people, I protected the defenseless all my life. There's no one in the media who's done more for the defenseless than Michael Savage, particularly children.

CHETRY: What are your views about immigrants and illegal immigration?

SAVAGE: Illegal immigration? It's in keeping with 80 percent of the American people. They want it stopped, and they want it stopped now.

Mr Weiner also had a choice not to get married a second time, and if he does have "religous teaching" he would know Matthew 19:9

It's two seperate things, you can only get divorced if you can show the other person has been sexually immoral, but when you are divorced you cannot get remarried...if you do then you are an adulterer....

so Savage is quite clearly an adulterer....

I saw CNN's interview with Savage this morning and it was like they were talking to Savage's non-evil twin. Just an honest hard-working family man who loves his country. CNN should have played a collection of his best(worst) lines and plenty of them during the interview to counter the bs he was shoveling in the interview.

Savage can be pretty good at playing benign for short periods. I remember once running across him on the radio dial and not realizing it was him at first. A pleasant voice was speaking about how to find hope in the little blessings as a defense against life's trials and tribulations. The voice listed things like the loyalty of a dog or the beauty of a sunset, before ending his list of pleasant things with how he took solace in "the death of a maggot like Allen Ginsberg." Even when trying to be pleasant, Savage's pure nastiness and cruelty show through.

The "out of context" defense only works if there is another context in which your comments would be benign. Unfortunately, this is never true of people like Savage, Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck.

Did anyone else get the impression that Savge was saying that if homosexuality was acceptable, and by acceptable I mean gay marriages presumably of course, that everyone, straight people would not bother with women and go gay?
Just when he said about wheres the reproduction going to come from?, don't really understand his point, I find the thought of it funny though, husbands leaping off their wives and saying "sorry hun, I'm gonna try homosexuality while its legal"

Oh and more seriously, thats such a bad excuse, it probably makes things worse than just admitting any fault and accepting his criticism over it. He'd probably have an easier time just apologisinhg and people would probably, eventually come close to forgiving him.

Does that mean I can tell people to shoot protesters or commies or radicals and then say:

Does that mean I can call our New President a communist and then say:

Because they're too cowed by his "celebrity" to call him out on his b*llsh!t. They're too desperate for ratings, and want the option of having these guys back to call them out on their b*llsh!t. If they played ACTUAL hardball with these scumbags (not the tee-ball practiced by Chris Mathews, but manly, fast-pitch hardball with wooden bats and no DH) then they'd refuse to come back and the 24 hour nes channel would be lacking for guests. I don't get it though, because there's no shortage of these guys. I'd pay to see them set up and mercilessly knocked down once a week or so. Good TV. Only Olbermann would have the courage and principals to do it though (him and Maddow) and the likes of Savage would never go on their shows.

Once again it needs to be said: THERE WAS NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT WHAT YOU SAID. You defamed me and my wife as parents, my two children, the doctors that diagnosed them, and the teachers and therapists that work with them. You did the same to millions of other families. You did so quite clearly. Now you spinelessly hide behind the humor defense. Typical of your lot. Then you accuse US of having no sense of humor. The problem with your rant is that there was no joke present to begin with.

I take autism seriously, but I do believe you still joke about it. But there's a way to do it, and that's in a way that shows respect to all those people invovled: www.myspace.com/on_the_spectrum

I don't think my strip will every have Mister Savage's audience, but he'll never have any real legitimacy. And I get to keep my soul.

Hmm. Maybe Savage should have taken down the website that he launched in defense of his controversial remarks about autism last year before changing his tune: http://www.savageonautism.com/

Dr. Savage has clarified that his July 16th statements concerning autism were not directed at those who are in fact challenged by this horrible affliction, but were instead addressing efforts to broaden the concept of autism beyond those who truly are autistic to a broader "autistic spectrum" of behavioral symptoms which are also manifested by persons who do not suffer from autism, and his concern that many children are being misdiagnosed as autistic due to the subjective nature of autism diagnosis (due to the lack of known biomedical indicators, such as blood tests, to definitively confirm or deny the actual existence of autism).

Strange, but that doesn't quite sound like "just kidding" to me.

I'm frightened there are governments trying to silence dissent. Everyone on here should be shocked and appalled. We should be defending his rights not his views. We are a Federalist government, we need strong states' rights. I have lived in Lubbock, San Francisco and New York. We, as Americans, are different. States should be able to set their moral standards when it comes to social issues (gay marriage, abortion, social welfare...etc). But don't list people with opposing views along with known terrorists, murderers and white supremacists.

What kind of statement is that? He brings it up but he doesn't want to talk about it?

Dr. Johnson said patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. For these blowhard talk show mouthpieces, claiming it was just a joke is the last refuge of a complete idiot. Ole BlunderRush is the past master of this particular dark art.

Perhaps someone can help me understand this more, but as I understood this "banning" of Michael Savage was that it had nothing to do with what he has to say, but that his presence in the U.K. could enflame violence by extremist groups based on what he has said about Muslims in the past.
In other words, were he to go speak somewhere in London, the response by extremists could be violence against their own citizens and Michael Savage as well.
