Drudge posts dubious picture of Obama "laugh" at joke about Limbaugh's kidneys

May 11, 2009 2:51 pm ET

SUMMARY: Matt Drudge posted a picture of President Obama in a context that suggested that Obama had laughed and pointed at comedian Wanda Sykes after her joke about Rush Limbaugh. However, a video that Drudge linked to of Sykes' remark about Limbaugh does not show Obama pointing at Sykes.

Internet gossip Matt Drudge posted a Reuters picture of President Obama at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on May 9 in a context that suggested that Obama had laughed after comedian Wanda Sykes said of Rush Limbaugh: "I hope his kidneys fail." The picture of Obama pointing, presumably at Sykes, and smiling was placed directly above a link saying: "President Laughs at Wanda Sykes Joke about Rush Limbaugh: 'I Hope His Kidneys Fail'..." However, the video that Drudge linked to, which was a C-SPAN clip of Sykes' line about Limbaugh posted on BreitbartTV.com, does not show Obama ever pointing at Sykes. In fact, after reviewing C-SPAN's video of the speech, Media Matters for America found only one instance of Obama pointing at Sykes: after she made a joke about Obama possibly giving the pope "a Bluetooth" as a gift.

The picture was posted on the Drudge Report from 9:09 p.m. ET on May 10 until soon after 10:36 a.m. ET on May 11, according to DrudgeReportArchives.com:

Below is a screenshot of Obama's reaction after Sykes joked about Obama giving the Pope "a Bluetooth," from C-SPAN's broadcast of the event:

Wanda's joke about Limbaugh being strung out on Oycontin was funnier, IMO...but nobody's making a big deal out of that comment so as not to draw any more attention to Limbaugh's drug addiction.

          In Rush Limbaugh? Yep...

Limbaugh is the same hypocritical jerk who regularly made fun of drug addicts on his show and called for the incarceration of them...all the while he was secretly a junkie. Limbaugh deserves no sympathy in my book...

I find it funny simply because the man in question is a HUGE - no pun intended, of course - hypocrite when it comes to drug addicts.

Now do you care to address that issue or will you do the usual dodge and distance maneuver?

You were on the front lines defending Limbaugh when he mocked a man with Parkinson's disease. Now we're supposed to be sensitive to Limbaugh's "disability", which is something he personally said should land someone in jail.

I look forward to your convoluted, utterly dishonest defense.

According to Rush, he should be sent up the river, should he not? I didn't laugh at the joke, but the man has compared those who think like I do to terrorists and has repeatedly told me that I hate this great country. I didn't like the joke, but the only way I'll feel sorry for Rush is if he denounces his former comments about drug users. Until he says "I was wrong." I'll give him very little sympathy.

On top of that, AA. His comments about M.J. Fox skipping his meds to exaggerate his Parkinson's symptoms was so far past the line of decency its disgusting. In case you didn't know, the medicines cause the movement, not vice versa. He never apologized. He never said he was wrong and constantly mocked Fox and his illness. Three people in my family have the disease, AA and he owes them a sincere apology, but apparently making fun of the diseased is ok if you're Rush. But, I didn't see you or your fellow Rush listeners speak out against him then (please correct me if I am wrong). I have very little sympathy for such an ugly, disgusting man.

            fried,

My sincere good wishes for those in your family suffering from that disease.

I remember discussing the issue, however the particulars of the discussions I engaged in escape me. I do remember MJF making a political ad and I do believe his disease and the resulting shakiness had an effect on the issue. That opened MJF and the Democrats up for honest criticism for using MJF's victim status for political gain.

However that was a long time ago... and at this point is a disingenuous argument. If you say it was wrong for Limbaugh to make comments regarding MJF then it is wrong for Sykes to do the same about Limbaugh. It's that simple. It looks like hypocrisy to me by those here those defending Sykes by citing Limbaugh and MJF.

It wasn't honest criticism, AA! Rush said that MJF was NOT taking his medicine which resulted in his excessive shakiness. The medicine CAUSES the constant movement! If he hadn't taken his medicine, which Limbaugh asserted, he could have locked up and not been able to move. It takes about 30 seconds to figure this out! Limbaugh, at the very least, did not research the disease or its symptoms before calling MJF a liar. That is NOT honest criticism. Limbaugh was either lying or not doing research and being reckless.

It is not a disengenuous argument and its not that long ago, AA. If you look at my original post, I wrote that I did not laugh at the joke. See? I didn't find it funny and I didn't defend Sykes. All I said is that any man, like Limbaugh, who spouts off that all drug users should be sent up the river, then falls victim to addiction and doesn't apologize gets very little sympathy from me. He made a point to either spout off on Parkinson's without doing his research or lie about MJF in November 2006. That's recent. Rush is either a liar or someone who spouts off without thinking. Which is it? Where is his apology to those who suffer from Parkinson's? How can you defend his tirade against MJF?

Shame on you for attempting to justify your support for this repugnant line of defense used by Limbaugh during the election and supported by his minions. Truly shameless.

A hypocritical drug addict should be judged as someone with a disability but someone with Parkinson's disease should be judged as a political opportunist? Don't you see what this Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hanitty, Beck our team versus their team mentality has done to you? Shame. It continues to warp the minds of people on the right that should have something to contribute to the conversation and destroys the political discourse in this country.

Don't tune out the nuts on your AM radio dial for our sake, do it for your sake and for the sake of your country. It deserves better.

I suppose making fun of someone with Parkinson's Disease is. Not to mention all the people that Limbaugh berates on a daily basis.People find picking on this gas bag funny because he is so cruel to others. He had the nerve to call Monica Lewinsky fat and compare Michelle Obama to a sausage. He calls women "feminazis".It's hard to have compassion for someone so nasty.

Actually I'm rather disappointed as Ms. Sykes. I;ve seen several of her shows, and I think she is a very funny lady. That being said, her whole Limbaugh bit was LAME. LAME. LAME. I'm not defending Rush, but she has the comedic chops to have done a lot better. And he deserve to get savaged, but she should have done it in a way that doesn't make us (Rush's critics) look bad. Niether line was funny. She could have done better. She mailed it in, and demeaned us in the process.

It's not funny. It's tasteless. Just because Limbaugh sinks to unimaginable depths with his schtick doesn't mean we have to join him. It is corrosive and coarsens the rhetoric even more. I understand these dinners poke fun at everyone, but some jokes aren't funny, no matter who they're aimed at.

It may have been tasteless, but most humor and most comedians are inappropriate. What do they expect? It's a night of poking fun and hiring a comic that will probably be offensive to someone somewhere. If they want a cotillion, then do that and cancel the dinner.

I'm wondering where all the outrage was from Drudge during the 2004 WHCD. Did he post the George W. Bush slide show searching under sofa cushions in the Oval Office looking for weapons of mass destruction while US soldiers and Iraqi civilians were dying by the thousands in the Middle East? "Those WMD have got to be somewhere..." HILARIOUS!

I'm not going to bother looking at Drudge's archives, but I'm going to venture to guess that that post doesn't exist.

He may even have come up with yet another explanation of "NOTUS" that doesn't do the exact opposite of explaining it. Seems AA was criticizing Obama for apologizing by using the term "Not Us" (as in "Not Me"? the words of somebody NOT taking repsonsibilty) or calling him a narcissist, a type of person not known for taking resposibility or apologizing.

I hope he tries, it could be funny, but I'm expecting him to slink off to his next pile.

I think the point that Drudge was making was that Obama was laughing at a comic making a joke out of Limbaugh dying from kidney failure.
The video clearly showed Obama laughing at the 'kidney' joke. This is typical MMFA misdirection. Who cares that the image of Obama laughing was at another moment in her routine? (The post now has a different picture - so is the video more accurate now?)
Keep up the good work MMFA!

Please tell me you're joking. The two expressions aren't even close to the same. And, for the sake of consistency, you were completely outraged and disgusted by Bush's little routine of looking for WMD's at the same event in 2004, in his office right? You also were clamoring because the media hardly mentioned it. You thought that our President took his idea of humor too far because he isn't and wasn't a comedian, right? After all, soldiers DID die looking for the WMD's Bush claimed, it wasn't just a joke. You did despise Bush, at least for a while, because of his humor, right?

What? What are you talking about?
I thought this thread was about Drudge trying to make Obama look bad by laughing at a joke? But I see that in your wisdom, you have discerned that this thread is really about Bush derangement syndrome - of which you obviously suffer.
There's a cure for BDS, by the way.
If Drudge's choice of that picture is what MMFA calls 'misinformation,' they need to get a life.

Nope, Drudge posted a picture out of context. That is disengenuous. You are worked up over a comedy bit by a comedian.

Since you think this is a non-issue, I want to know what you thought of Bush's joking about the reason he sent thousands of troops in harm's way. You think Obama "laughing" about Rush is bad, why didn't you think Bush's jokes about WMD's were bad? Where was Drudge then?

Rush Limbaugh will not be alive for much longer, I do not think. If his kidneys don't fail, other parts of him will. That pathetic man is not very healthy at all. Sadly, he is using his pain and misery to tear down what others pay him a King's Ransom to tear down. Why should wealthy Republicans get their own hands dirtier when their bloated mouthpiece will do it for them? Happily, his influence is waning (beyond the timid bully zombies who make up the majority of what is the Republican Party nowadays) and soon he'll be a smelly smudge in history and a few damp and sticky DVDs in the $1 pile.

Anyone who defends him obviously never listens to him. The words that spew out of his mouth on a daily basis are as bad as and worse than anything anyone can say about him. If and when you defend Rush, you just show what a clueless wonder you are.

        Rush is funny.
Unlike Ms. Sykes. And by the way, Rush has never said that he wants America to fail. what he has said is just what Carville said of Bush in the morning of 9/11/2001 - that he wanted the President to fail - to not achieve his agenda.
I agree with Rush - I hope that Obama fails as well. I hope that we as a country will be able to recover our capitalist economy from the clutches of 'clueless' socialists and so-called progressives.

The joke wasn't funny. I don't wish Limbaugh death from kidney failure.

But man, this nation will be better off when he dies. Let's just hope it's from old age, and that we'll all ridicule him into obscurity until then.

All I have to add is that I agree with Wanda: If that man hopes that my country fails then I have no simpathy for him and hope he suffers.

Rushbo belittles, humiliates, pontificates and lies for hours on end evry day. He has made fun of sick people, he has called people in the military who spoke out against 'his' presdient 'fake soldiers' he thinks we are asking him to honor the man in the White House 'because his daddy's black'

He hates my country, he hates anything that isn't given the Rushbo Stamp of approval and i will laugh at him, and his kidneys, any chance I get.

I wish the bloviators at Fox News would make more of the Oxy joke. Then we could talk about how the Rushbo loves his 20's.

This is a lie. A caller used the term. Rush asked him to expound and now left wing sites have picked up the ball and run with this OUT of context.

To tell you the truth, I do think Wanda Syke's comments were over the line with the kidneys and saying he was the 20th hijacker. However, I have no problem with references to Limbaugh's weight and drug-addiction, and getting out of Vietnam with a pimple on his a**, and everything else that makes him a d*uche.

However, her comments were nothing compared to Limbaugh's daily hate, racism, and sexism, and constant comparisons to liberals as terrorists, etc...

What I find amusing is MMFA not picking up on the malicious misinformation stated by Wanda Sykes. She said that Rush said that he hopes the country fails.

That is a patent lie. I challenge anyone to prove Limbaugh ever said he hopes the country fails.

The rest of her schtick was based on that lie.

Gotta love those liberals who will stoop to lies and character assassination for their comedy ...and our President laughs right along with it. Ah yes. Gotta love those open minded and tolerant liberals!

It is supposed to be be a light fun night. Good speeches and light comedy. It is too bad it had to be spoiled by her unsavory humor. Obama's lines were much better and he delivered them very well. I am still rolling over the Mother day joke about his chief of staff. It was a little disappointing for Obama to mention that the press had all voted for him. We should at least pretend to be objective and unbiased in the media. For all the flak fox news gets the other side isn't much better (CNN and MSNBC along with the networks). Don't expect any appreciation in the form of bailouts to the media industry. For someone trying to end politics as usual her humor just set them back a long way.

You're right, it is too bad that this has to overshadow a good evening. However, why wasn't the media all over Bush for his WMD's joke at the 2004 correspondents' dinner? To me, its far more offensive for the President to make fun of a reason thousands have died rather than a comedian going after a pundit.

What is the big deal? Can't anyone take a joke anymore? This site made such a big deal out of the Helen Thomas joke, When frankly she does look like a wicked witch. No one on the left rebuked Nina Van Den Havel for wishing Orin Hatches grandchildren died from aids. Maybe Wanda can put together some jokes about Flushbo and Joe Bidens drug addict daughter sharing there coke and oxy together. I seem to remeber a book written by a future president who claims he was in a drug induced haze during high school and college and took drugs for fun and not for pain.
