SUMMARY: Savannah Guthrie falsely claimed of Guantánamo Bay detainees: "No congressman wants these detainees in their district." In fact, at least two congressmen have offered to hold Guantánamo detainees at prisons in their districts.

During the May 20 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, NBC News correspondent Savannah Guthrie falsely claimed of detainees held at the detention center in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba: "No congressman wants these detainees in their district." In fact, at least two congressional representatives have offered to hold detainees from Guantánamo Bay at prisons in their districts.

In a May 9 op-ed in The Washington Post, Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) offered use of the Albert V. Bryan U.S. Courthouse and Detention Center in Alexandria, Virginia. In the op-ed, Moran noted that "the '20th hijacker,' Zacarias Moussaoui, who participated in planning the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon, was held and prosecuted in the Alexandria courthouse" and stated that "should President Obama determine that Alexandria needs to play a reasonably limited role in a nationwide effort to bring justice to the Guantanamo detainees and close this unfortunate chapter of American history, I am confident that Alexandrians will stand strong as they always have."

Rep. Jack Murtha (D-PA) has also said that he is willing to house detainees from Guantánamo Bay at a prison in his district if a maximum security prison were built, according to a January 21 report published on FoxNews.com:

Rep. Jack Murtha, D-Pa., says he'd be willing to house prisoners from Guantanamo Bay in his congressional district if President Obama makes good on a plan to close the U.S. prison there.

[...]

Murtha only has a minimum security prison in his district. But he says he'd have no reservations about holding detainees there in a maximum security prison.

"Sure, I'd take 'em," said Murtha, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war. "They're no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo."

Murtha added that there was "no reason not to put 'em in prisons in the United States and handle them the way they would handle any other prisoners."

From the May 20 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe:

JOE SCARBOROUGH (co-host): Well, so much -- so much stuff going on at the White House. We could talk about credit cards; we could talk about CAFE standards. But let's start with what happened yesterday in the Senate regarding Gitmo. Is the White House concerned --

GUTHRIE: Yeah.

SCARBOROUGH: -- with that vote, or do they understand why the Democrats stripped out the funding for shutting down Gitmo?

GUTHRIE: Well, I think at this point they get it, that on the Hill there's grave concern that there really isn't a plan for what to do with these detainees, and that Congress is just simply not going to open the purse strings until they know more about it. This is a political hot potato. No congressman wants these detainees in their district. Without more information, either the House or Senate doesn't want to be coming up with the money.

Now, look, eventually it's clear that they will. And I think, actually, tomorrow, when the president gives this big speech on detainee policy and some of these national security issues, we're going to have a little more meat on the bones. I don't think it's going to be the Guantánamo plan, but I think there will be more detail. And perhaps the White House is hoping that will satisfy enough members in Congress so that they can get this money released, because actually the Pentagon spokesman was quoted as saying, you know, without getting money soon that January 22 deadline, which I think it is to close Guantánamo, looks a little bit in jeopardy.

-- Alexandria needs to play a reasonably limited role in a nationwide effort to bring justice to the Guantanamo detainees -- Jim Moran

Keerist...what's next...looking carefully at "verb tenses"? The Alexandria facility has housed exactly "1" foreign terrorist. Which makes this a pretty empty and rhetorical response. Especially when Moran makes the statement, "What to do with the detainees who remain of the more than 700 sent there since 2001 is much more difficult". But, I've got to hand it to you Jim, that's pitching for the old team.

Even funnier yet is Murtha's claim of "Sure, I'd take 'em"...if we build him a maximum security prison. God only knows how much graft would be involved in that boondoggle.

So there you have it...Guthrie debunked by the media watchdog's crack staff.

Maybe we should just give every congressman one. With the M&M boys in the fold...just 533 to go.

Wesley: There are just under 250 detainees in question. Several of those will be sent back to their home countries if they are found not guilty of any crime during their trials. Those found guilty will be sentenced to maximum security or federal prisons. The problem is the remaining 1/4 to 1/3 who cannot be tried because the CIA/DOD/private contractors tortured them and, therefore, all evidence against them is tainted. Those few are the ones who are of concern.

Not weak at ALL if you want to see weak read your post. Guthries said no congressman offered to take them and at least two have. I dont know how much simpler, in deference to YOU, they could possibly make it

So, Point of view let me understand you. Because Murtha's district is unable to house the Gitmo prisoners in a suitable facility then Murtha does not want the prisoners. Similarly, because Moran's district of Alexandria used a facility that housed only Zacarias Moussaoui and it is not capable of housing ALL of the Gitmo prisoners then Moran does not want the Gitmo Prisoners.

In other words, you are saying that Guthrie's statement is true because a congressman must not to want the Gitmo prisoners in their district if their district is not capable of housing all of them in a suitable facility. Seems like some faulty logic there.

The capability to house these priconers does not equate to the willingness to house these prisoners. And Guthrie wtated the no congressman wanted (i.e. was willing to take) the prisoners in their district.

They're accused of terrorism. They should get there day in court and American standards should apply (i.e., the banning of secret evidence and hearsay).

I just asked my congressman, Pete Stark, to bring them here (SF Bay near Oakland. We have more Afghans than any other district in US).
      ...........
Are we still the land of the free and home of the brave?

Let's demonstrate to the world behavor based upon our own laws and principles.

      1) Vote to fund closing of Guantanamo.
      2) Are you brave enough to join me in saying, "Bring the Prisoners to My District!"
      3) Put them on trial here, if appropriate, to demonstrate that we believe in American justice.
      4) If they are guilty, keep them here in prison.
      5) If they are innocent, decide where to release them.

We no big prisons here either, only an Alameda NAS, an abandoned naval air station. Plenty of asbestos, a fair amount of Benzene and VOCs in the soil. But to make it easy we have a couple hundred thousand sq feet of empty hangars. Next door is a USS Hornet, a decommissioned WWII aircraft carrier with a small Marine brig on board.

Yeah, for a liberal district, we're not scairdy cats.

San Quentin is right across the bay. Could put a handful of the Gitmo detainees there, at least until Governor Schwartzenegger sells the place.

What is funny here, is that the Media let the Republicans frame the Gitmo Debate into us Americans being so "scared" of these Terrorists who will be living off of American Taxpayers money while watching tv, eating three meals a day, pumping iron, and adding to Terrorists' causes by recruiting other Prison Inmates, if they are to be release to Maximum Security Prisons on American soil by the Obama Administration. Poor, poor Americans "scared" of these little old Terrorists say the Republicans as they high five eachother with successfully "distracting" away from their wrong-doings (torture), no solutions (bailouts, auto industry, credit card reform, healthcare reform, recession), and smear campaigns against President Obama and the Democrats.

Btw, someone should point out to the Media and Republicans that we American Taxpayers "already" pay for these things at Gitmo for these Terrorists "NOW". But hey, the Republicans really played the political game well going into the Memorial weekend. "NOT!!!" The Republicans forgot about President Obama and his Administration who came out today and pulled the brakes up on the Gitmo Debate. Uh, oh - and now here comes the Democrats with chests out strong saying how we Americans are "NOT" scared of these or ANY Terrorists. What a "great" save from the Republicans "distractions" on the Gitmo Debate by President Obama and the Democrats. Wink, wink.
