SUMMARY: Citing a CNN poll, Mika Brzezinski asserted, "[Dick] Cheney's recent foray into the media spotlight is boosting his approval rating." However, CNN's polling director refuted the notion that Cheney's higher favorability in the poll is related to his "recent foray into the media spotlight."

On the May 22 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, co-host Mika Brzezinski asserted, "According to a new poll, [former Vice President Dick] Cheney's recent foray into the media spotlight is boosting his approval rating. Thirty-seven percent now have a favorable opinion of the former vice president, up 8 points from when he left office." An on-screen graphic accompanying Brzezinski's comments indicated that she was referring to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll conducted May 14-17. However, in a May 21 CNN Political Ticker article announcing the poll results, CNN polling director Keating Holland directly refuted the notion that Cheney's higher favorability in the new poll is related to his "recent foray into the media spotlight." Holland stated, "Is Cheney's uptick due to his visibility as one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administration? Almost certainly not. ... Former President George W. Bush's favorable rating rose six points in that same time period, and Bush has not given a single public speech since he left office."

In contrast to Brzezinski, other media, such as United Press International and the Politico, noted Holland's remarks in reporting on the new CNN poll.

From the May 22 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe:

BRZEZINSKI: According to a new poll, Mr. Cheney's recent foray into the media spotlight is boosting his approval rating. Thirty-seven percent now have a favorable opinion of the former vice president, up 8 points from when he left office.

Well, Morning Joe just got even more into the Cheney koolaid by hosting and kissing up to Liz Cheney all hour.
Funny how the media is focusing mostly on Cheney and everyone has had on Liz Cheney but, not a democrat in sight to talk about Obama's speech or present the sane point of view in regard to Gitmo and torture.
The media is still kissing the behind of Cheney...
      But, then, is anyone surprised???

i agree with you mika was trying to fell joes shoes.chaney is losing control.what better way is to have a 15 page speech to tell American people i was right and you are wrong.it was nothing but a scar tactic to keep guantanamo open.Lizzy is on the chaney tour because she and scarbough don't want to see these war mongers in prison where they should be.and let the soldiers out for doing the same thing that chaney said was illegal.he and used them as scapegoats do as i say not as i do.

Of course, it is a Cheney love feast. Where was all this love when he was actually VP? It is amazing how the same man who told us that there was WMD that we'd be greeted as liberators, that Rummy should remain Sec of Def is the same man who seems to have the right answer to everything. People who criticize the president, men such as Wilerson, are just driven by politics and personal agenda. Blah Blah Blah. Apparently, the only person in America who is unafraid to tell the truth-- other than the Cheney clan-- is Joe Scarborough. His voice is the only one that matters and everyone should just kowtow before him because he is omniscient and in his own mind, omnipotent.

The misreading of the poll is nothing new. It is reminiscent of the poll suggesting that Obama was the most divisive president in modern American history. A ton of work was done to explain why the poll is misleading, including the pollster. And yet, MJ sides with Rove and berates liberals for hypocracy. I suppose the world is really as simple as 1+1=2. By this logic, there should be no climate change b/c we have snow in winter. Dinosaurs lived among men b/c we have the Flinstones.

The show used to be informative and fun. Now it is just 90% GOP talk dominated by Pelosi and Obama bashing and unfiltered Liz Cheney, Southern Gops with 5% token dems (Ford) and great guests like Meacham, and 5% airtime for Joe's book. As I understand it from his Time article and plugs, the premise is just hilarious. Look at it this way: Imagine if a liberal in 1972, 1980, 2000, 2004 saying that Dems lost the election b/c they were not liberal enough and had they been true liberals there would be a greater tent. Oh, by the way, there were never German pow camps in the US during WWII. Historians who have written otherwise have no clue b/c Joe says so.

I believe that, if you could dissect the numbers, the bulk of the improved ratings would come from Republicans who are so desperate for a glimmer of leadership that they'll even cling to this evil old bastard.

I also find it interesting that Dick's approval rating is still slightly below Pelosi's level - which she has maintained, but you would think from all of the news accounts that Cheney's situation is far better than Pelosi's.

Considering that the left has spent the last seven years pulling out all the stops to demonize Cheney, and doint it's best to hide Pelosi's complicit approval of the EITs, Cheney is only a point apart from Pelosi. Her numbers have dropped since April.

Bush's increased approval rating is simply the coattail effect of Cheney's articulate defense of the Bush Administration.

The CNN news director obviously is trying to deflect Cheney's improved numbers by attempting a reversed cause and effect explanation by claiming Cheney is riding Bush's coattails. Not surprising, but it doesn't make any sense.

It is obvious that the Obama reversals on his campaign pledges regarding the war on Terror by keeping so many of the Bush Administration's policies and Cheney illustrating those policies have caused the uptick.

I'm not a high paid polster like CNN's Holland, but even I can make the connection that both Bush's & Cheney's uptick in the polls are due to someone (Cheney) finally getting out in front and challenging the current administrations policies, inaccuracies, and attempts to revise history. The only other alternative explanation for the uptick is how much better the Bush/Cheney administration look by comparison to the guys in charge now. And as for vwcat's assertion that there is "not a democrat in sight to talk about Obama's speech or present the sane point of view in regard to Gitmo and torture," I thought that's what CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, the New York Times, the LA Times, etc., etc., ad nauseum were there for.

Wow! All the way up to 37%!!

Someone alert the media! This is a big story. Do you realize what this means?

Only 63% of Americans disapprove of this elitist blockhead

This gives the corporate media every reason to put Cheney into the regular rotation. A go-to guy for opinion.

I just don't understand this "Morning Joe" Fox like swing, is there a ratings monitor/corporate shill that knows which demographic element is watching? and Joe S will just talk louder to make a point as his guests just nod their heads worse than Fox. When Paul Krugman was on he skewered all of JS arguments with pure facts, and did it politely. CNBC's Squawk on the other other hand offers a bit of debate and actual info, their primary resources are better. Could Ninca B tell us what a Credit Default Swap was without deferring to joe s who would rant about Obama. The show used to be funny and informative, even Willie Geist is not as funny anymore. If I want Fox I'll watch Fox, and wait for those moments when they step out of character.

Of course Bush and Cheney's approval ratings would go up. THEY ARE NO LONGER RUINING THE COUNTRY. That's worth a six-point bump any day.

I have had to abandon Morning Joe, or is it Mourning Joe, because of the self righteous wailing of Joe and friends. At bottom these guys are all a bunch of homophobic racists. If Johnson hadn't pushed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, these guys would be Democrats. The biggest coup the Republican Party has pulled is convincing the poor whites of the South and MidWest that the Republicans are on their side. Fear of gays, and hatred of blacks concerns these people more than bettering their lives and the lives of their children. But the times they are a'changing. Meanwhile Joe and his white sheet friends can keep talking their way to oblivion while I don't watch.
