SUMMARY: Reporting on Dick Cheney's speech, Jim Angle repeated the debunked claim that the use of harsh interrogation techniques helped thwart an attack on the U.S. Bank Tower in Los Angeles.

On the May 21 edition of Fox News' Special Report, chief Washington correspondent Jim Angle, reporting on former Vice President Dick Cheney's speech that morning, said that Cheney "called on the president to use his power to declassify and release those memos, which he and others argue stopped several attacks, including one on a bank tower in Los Angeles. And he criticized those who pretend otherwise." As Media Matters for America has noted on previous instances in which Angle invoked the foiled plot against the U.S. Bank Tower (formerly known as the Library Tower), this interpretation conflicts with the chronology of events put forth on multiple occasions by the Bush administration, as Slate.com's Timothy Noah noted. Specifically, the Bush administration said that the planned attack on the Library Tower was thwarted in February 2002 -- at least a month before Abu Zubaydah, the first detainee interrogated using the harsh techniques, was captured on March 28, 2002, and more than a year before Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the other detainee whose harsh interrogation is frequently credited with disrupting the plot, was captured in March 2003.

From the May 21 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Bret Baier:

ANGLE: Mr. Cheney derided that mantra, as he called it, saying it's a familiar pattern.

CHENEY: It excuses the violent and blames America for the evil that others do. It's another version of that same old refrain from the left: "We brought it on ourselves."

ANGLE: Mr. Cheney also questioned why the president released the document setting out the legal authorizations for the interrogations, but not the memos documenting their results.

CHENEY: For reasons the administration has yet to explain, they believe the public has a right to know the method of the questions, but not the content of the answers.

ANGLE: He called on the president to use his power to declassify and release those memos, which he and others argue stopped several attacks, including one on a bank tower in Los Angeles. And he criticized those who pretend otherwise.

CHENEY: Some members of Congress are notorious for demanding they be briefed into the most sensitive intelligence programs. They support them in private and then head for the hills at the first sign of controversy.

Yeah, but it's just Bush's own time line that refutes this, and you know that's just a bunch of liberal nonsense. No need to pay any attention to THAT.

that's the re-write. Yeah, that's it, Bush was a liberal, and Cheney now renounces all the Cheney decisions that Bush enacted, 'cause Cheney, known for excessive secrecy, NOW wants all the secret documents declassified!!! Vs. Cheney in office, who probably classified all his toilet paper and cutlery.

The ditto-heads who parrot all these strange spewings of out-of-office-Cheney will rewrite many a book listing psychiatric maladies...

Conservatism has become nothign more than up-is-downism lately. It's almost sad... in a gleefully satisfying sort of way.

With luck, after the papers are all declassified they will eventually be used to send Chainey to prison.

how's that committee on terrorism that bush appointed cheney to head in the spring of 2001? the one that never met? the one that bush said cheney would chair, after bush took the recommendations of the bipartisan hart-rudman commission on terrorism and threw them in the garbage? and one of those recommendations was for a dept. of homeland security, which bush opposed until 9-11, and then in his usual rewrite of history, he turned around and made it sound like he was always for it. it's not exactly like the hijackers were all rocket scientists. they were taking flight lessons and telling the owners of the schools they didn't want to learn to take off and land. we just need someone to pay attention, instead of month long vacations clearing brush.

and of course, cheney's chief of staff scooter libby, along with karl rove, destroyed an entire intelligence network by outing a cia agent, and the white house never did a thing about it. why would anyone overseas cooperate with us on an undercover basis. you can be sure everyone that valerie plame had dealings with overseas was investigated by their home governments and some paid a high price. but national security was all in the game for the bush white house.

Like I said we need to move forward and all, by trashing everything libruls propose and opposing gay marriage. And, they want to take yer guns.

Let's see, which old leftist was it that blamed America for 9/11? Oh yeah, they said God was punishing America for tolerating homosexuality. Tell me again which leftist this was? Pat Robertson or Jerry Foulwell? That nut from Oklahoma?
