NY Times selectively cited own poll results on Obama's economic policies

June 17, 2009 9:46 pm ET

SUMMARY: The New York Times reported that according to its own polling, "A majority of people said his [President Obama's] policies have had either no effect yet on improving the economy or had made it worse." However, the Times article did not report that 57 percent of respondents approved of the way Obama is handling the economy.

A June 17 New York Times article headlined "Poll Finds Unease With Obama on Key Issues" reported that according to a New York Times/CBS News poll conducted June 12-16, "A majority of people said his [President Obama's] policies have had either no effect yet on improving the economy or had made it worse, underscoring how his political strength still rests on faith in his leadership rather than concrete results." However, the Times article did not report that according to the poll, a majority of respondents -- 57 percent -- approved of the way Obama is handling the economy. Nor did the Times article report that when respondents were asked if they thought "Obama's policies have made the economy better, made the economy worse or haven't ... had any effect on the economy yet," only 15 percent said that Obama's policies have made the economy worse. According to the poll, 32 percent thought his policies have made the economy better, 15 percent thought his policies have made the economy worse, and 48 percent thought his policies have not yet had any effect on the economy.

      Thank you, SP!!

I had to friggin go on HuffPo and say the exact same thing because now this BOGUS story is making its way through the NET and will get picked up EVERYWHERE tomorrow.

The poll sais: "57% APPROVE of Obama's handling of the economy"

51% said they think he should pay down the deficit instead of stimulus.

That does not mean they think he is INEFFECTIVE. It means his economic team has done a lousy job of drowning out the misinformation from the GOP.

Obama needs the economists that pushed for a stim like Krugman and Orzag to get out there more and push the truth!

I knew this story was bogus and so was the CBO report. I'm no economist but from a lay persons pov I don't see how the majority of Americans believe his economic policies were ineffective. Just watch the news where they present a cautious but optimistic view of the economy. However, I'm sure the Obama Admin is on it.

The economy is getting worse and I don,t need any poll or news media of any type to tell me that. All Washington is doing is adding fuel to the fire.
