Watching Fox & Friends can be hazardous to your health reform knowledge

August 13, 2009 5:40 pm ET — 9 Comments

Fox & Friends continued its pattern of consistently advancing falsehoods about health care reform when Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) -- whom the program hosted to take questions about the reform legislation from viewers and "dispel the myths" -- falsely claimed that under the House proposal, "the greatest number [of uninsured people] that will be picked up is by a substantial expansion of Medicaid." In fact, according to the Congressional Budget Office, 30 million uninsured people would receive insurance through the health care exchanges set up by the bill, while only 11 million people would receive coverage under Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) combined.

EMBED

From the August 13 edition of Fox & Friends:

BRIAN KILMEADE (co-host): Good morning to you. Will more people be insured from what you read from the bill for less money?

REP. MICHAEL BURGESS (R-TX): More people will be insured, but the less money can't -- is not a promise that can be fulfilled. And the -- of course, the greatest number that will be picked up is by a substantial expansion of Medicaid, which likely is going to put some strain on state budgets as well. So there is some concern there. But the price tag is -- is huge. And that's been the -- that's been the conundrum since the middle of June.

Burgess' claim that the bill covers the uninsured primarily through Medicaid expansion is contradicted by CBO

CBO says 30 million uninsured will be covered through the health care exchanges, compared to 11 million who would be covered by Medicaid and SCHIP. CBO's preliminary analysis of the House tri-committee health care reform bill found that in 2019, 37 million fewer people would be uninsured compared to current law; 30 million people would be covered through the health care exchanges created by the bill, while 11 million people would be added to the rolls of Medicaid or SCHIP under the bill's provisions.

[CBO, 7/17/09]

Fox & Friends brought Burgess on for the purpose of "[g]etting to the truth, dispelling the myths." At the end of the segment with Burgess, Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade said: "Getting to the truth, dispelling the myths, the man that read it who's actually a doctor and understands this business of health care, Representative Michael Burgess out of Texas, thanks so much for joining us."

Fox & Friends provides regular dose of health reform misinformation

Death panels, rationing, other misinformation finds a home on Fox & Friends. In the last seven days alone, Fox & Friends has advanced a bonanza of health care reform misinformation, including the falsehood that the bill requires the elderly to go before a "death panel," the falsehood that the House bill would force people into "government designed plan," the claim that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called health care reform opponents "un-American," the suggestion that a section of the bill that would provide Medicare reimbursement to doctors for end-of-life counseling would create "end-of-life consultants" other than doctors consulting with families, and the prediction that the bill would create a system of rationing that would result in the disappearance of medical procedures like dialysis for the elderly.

From the August 13 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends:

DOOCY: Welcome back. Is there any truth in the saying that free health care actually costs us too much in the end?

KILMEADE: Texas Congressman Michael Burgess, who is also an M.D., is joining us live right now to answer some of your questions regarding the health care overhaul. He's read the entire bill, pretty much the only person I know who can say that, including the president. Congressman, welcome back, and Doctor, I should say. Can we throw a few questions at you?

BURGESS: Please. Good morning to you.

KILMEADE: Good morning to you. Will more people be insured from what you read from the bill for less money?

So there's some concern there. But the price tag is -- is huge. And that's been the -- that's been the conundrum since the middle of June.

DOOCY: All right, Doctor, continuing with our little televised town hall right here.

It doesn't matter...FOX viewers live in alternate reality anyway and there's nothing that can be done to change that. The only solution to the present brouhaha is for the Democrats in Congress to pass health care reform unilaterally and say screw the Republican bastards.

We can only hope the dems pass whatever legislation they feel necessary, so that they can own(by themselves) the result and we will no longer have to listen to excuses on why things aren't working....no more finger pointing would be change indeed....

I agree, Irony, I wish the Dems would be as forceful at pushing through beneficial legislation like health care reform as the GOP is at passing laws to diminish our privacy and funnel our money to their friends.

Of course, the media and the GOP have been busily training their monkeys to scream "Dictator" for months now, so anything done without bipartisan support is going to produce a predictable infestation of crying teabaggers who want their country back.

And if we manage to get some reform passed in spite of GOPpers & Blue Dogs stamping their feet and holding their breath, the Repoops will be standing around pointing fingers and finding fault with everything about the results.

Defeatists, quitters, suckers and whiners. Who else is left in the GOP, except for those making a lot of money off of those types?

This is news to you? I follow FOX NONSENSE CHANNEL infrequently, and I have yet to find any Host or talking heads on there with any degree of veracity..except for Shepard Smith who tries his hardest to report the news as honestly as they let him. Hence my moniker for them. They are great for their uninformed and wacked out minions occuppying the fringe. They cloak themselves with the American flag and patriotic babble for the 'real americans'.

I have been trying to e-mail an item from my local TV station in New Orleans. The provision for e-mailing has been "disabled" for several days. I wonder why. I am embarrassed to be living in this state. Try to get the link at: WWLTV.com and the item is titled:
"Rep. crafting amendment exempting La. from national health care."
We are being led straight to HELL, one state at a time, Louisiana leading the charge.

A doctor...who is a politician...and from Texas. Ask the doctor/Congressman/Texan how many strip malls he owns...and how many diagnostic clinics.

I just wish we had a media that would provide the truth, full and complete. MSNBC, CBS, ABC are worse than CNN and FOX. I have asked my Congressmen in NM (all Democrats), the White House Health Insurance Reform Reality Check, Axelrod, etc fo answers to simple questions and none have responded. I vote for the best person - Democrat or Republican including the last election. I would like to see more bi-partisanship a not so novel concept that I believe most American's want. I am angry at the entire process in which the President and Congress have answered questions with half-thruth or totally ignorred the issues. 1) Where are all the doctors comi8ng from and when to address the addition of 37M to 46M newly insured. 2) why is "tort reform" not addressed - not just the lawsuits, but the doctors are performing additional test and procedures they feel are unnecessary to prevent liabilities. The trial lawyers have made significant contributions to the Democrats and I guess it is payback time. 3) What is the structure, purpose and limitations of the Best Practice Panels/council/boards. What is said in the bill and what its supporters have said in the past is scary. Bottom line is that many of us do not trust our elected officials. Republicans in the past 8 years and now Democrats since 2006. Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd, Harry Reid are just as bad as anything we have ever seen - where are our statesmen.

I spent more than thirty years listening to ABC, CBS, and NBC, and later to CNN and MSNBC. I unhesitatingly accepted all that I heard. I changed my political orientation when I heard Dan Rather report in the 2000 presidential election that Florida had gone for Gore (it hadn't) merely to influence conservatives in Florida not to vote. Now nine years later, it seems inconceivable to me that anyone can deny a media bias toward the left. FOX news often has leftist commentators for counterpoint. I have yet to see the major media offer a conservative view. It is easy to ridicule O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh et al, but it is rare that their hostile commentators choose to go on their shows, but I welcome those that do. Bob Beckle, Alan Combs, and Kirstin Powers do so regularly and their comments are part of FOX's "fair and balanced."
