Conservative media attack Dems for playing "death card" while using Kennedy's death to attack health care

August 27, 2009 10:17 pm ET — 12 Comments

Following Sen. Ted Kennedy's death, several conservative media figures -- including Rush Limbaugh -- have attacked Democrats for purportedly attempting to use his passing to stifle debate and enact health care reform legislation. But conservative media figures -- also including Limbaugh -- have used Kennedy's death to attack health care reform, baselessly suggesting that if reform passes, elderly cancer patients -- as Kennedy was -- will be "denied" treatments or that their treatments will be "rationed."

Limbaugh invokes Wellstone memorial -- "a frat party compared to what's going to happen" with Kennedy. On the August 27 edition of his radio program, Limbaugh said that the memorial service following the 2002 death of Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN) "was a frat party compared to what's going to happen here," adding that Democrats were going to turn Kennedy's memorial service into "the biggest political rally you've ever seen." As Media Matters for America has noted, the claim that Wellstone's memorial was politicized is a myth based on distortions propagated by the conservative media.

Referencing Wellstone memorial, Beck suggests Democrats "exploit[ing]" Kennedy's death. On the August 27 edition of his radio program, Glenn Beck stated that "to honor Ted Kennedy, they are going to pass health care reform. Yes. To honor, to -- not to exploit, not to capitalize on his death." Beck also referenced "the somber moment of Paul Wellstone."

Ingraham says Dems playing "death card" with Kennedy's passing. Guest-hosting the August 27 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, Laura Ingraham accused Democrats of "using" Kennedy's death to "guilt lawmakers and the public into supporting Obamacare." After referencing the "embarrassing and exploitative" Wellstone memorial, Ingraham accused Democrats of "playing the death card again."

Fox News asks: "Are Democrats Using Kennedy's Death To Stifle Town Hall Protesters?" On the August 27 edition of Your World with Neil Cavuto, Fox aired the following graphic:

Hannity: "[W]e're now being implored to get behind Obamacare because it's what Ted Kennedy would have wanted." Discussing Kennedy's death during his radio program, Sean Hannity asserted, "We've got The Wall Street Journal reporting -- and by the way, a lot of this was the politicizing of -- remember Paul Wellstone's death? You know, 'Let's do everything for Paul.' And we're now being implored to get behind Obamacare because it's what Ted Kennedy would have wanted." [The Sean Hannity Show, 8/26/09]

But conservative media figures -- including Limbaugh -- have used Kennedy's death to attack the health care bill

Limbaugh: "[T]o put his name on a health care bill that denies" care to others "is hypocrisy." On his radio show, Limbaugh stated:

LIMBAUGH: I think it would be a tremendous disservice to come up with a health care bill that we have now in the House and is floating around the Senate, the one that [President] Obama's talking about, where the government is going to decide whether people like Ted Kennedy get to go through every aspect of survival that he did. Exercise their spirit. He had a spirit for life; he wanted to live. He did not want to die.

Now, Obama has said, well, we can't look at that, because costs -- looking at somebody's spirit and will to live -- well, Ted Kennedy's spirit was to live, and he chose to exercise as many options as were available to him to prolong his life. And to put his name on a health care bill that denies that to other people and say we're doing this in his memory is hypocrisy, and it would be insulting to his memory. [Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show, 8/26/09]

Later in the program, Limbaugh stated: "I think it suffices to say that it would be hypocritical as it could be to put his name on a health care bill that forces things on people that he was not forcing on himself. I think it would be an insult to his memory."

Marr said under public option, a "bureaucrat" would have told Kennedy, "77, brain tumor, bye-bye." Guest-hosting The Lou Dobbs Show, Tom Marr stated that "the government option that is in there that the late Senator Kennedy supported would never allow you to get the Bentley health care that Senator Kennedy got provided to him by the people of the United States." He later added: "The senator used everything possible to fight for over a year, and he fought a gallant fight. That is going to be denied and rationed if they get away with this government-run option. Yes, there will be a bureaucrat saying 'No, 77, brain tumor, bye-bye.' " [United Stations Radio Networks' The Lou Dobbs Show, 8/26/09]

Al Franken covered the right-wing shamelessly lying about the Wellstone memorial in his book "Lies and the Lying Liars Who tell them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right"

Now they're not even waiting for a memorial service, since they've demonized (literally) any activity that is humane and compassionate. Cynics that they are, they can only believe the worst of people, because that's what they see when they look in the mirror.

Actually at a Republican precinct meeting here in Arizona, there was not even a close approximation to the truth told. I am sorry to tell you that my party insists that no health care bill be passed no matter what. And if anyone is maligning the Kennedy name, Republicans are the ones doing it. And sad to say, my Senator, John McCain is leading the charge. And McCain's silly attempt to blame others is just that, SILLY!!!! But it is my opinion that the Democrats will still win this fight because to not win it would be letting Ted Kennedy down after all of his tireless work on this issue. As a retired RN, a life time registered Republican, and a consumer in the British Columbia universal health care plan, I can tell you that we must all fight with any means possible in order to win universal health care NOW! I had heart surgery in Canada many years ago and I had first class care and recovered quickly. We would be very fortunate if we had a health care program like BCHIS, the plan run by the British Columbia provincial government. First rate from first doctor's office visit, then through diagnostic procedures and finally the admission to a first rate hospital for heart surgery followed by a quick recovery!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Perhaps someday the folks who can't see the forest for the trees, like Wesley and co. will comprehend how they have been manipulated into going against their own interests.

-- baselessly suggesting that if reform passes...their treatments will be "rationed." -- mmfa

Betsy Markey (D-Col) has a different take:

-- Some people, including Medicare recipients, will have to give up some current benefits to truly reform the nation's health-care system..."There's going to be some people who are going to have to give up some things, honestly, for all of this to work."

Then there's uber liberal Russ Feingold. He states that there will be no health care reform before Christmas...if ever. He also tells his constituents not to worry...federal funding of abortions will not be a part of reform.

He also takes Harry Reid to task for calling protesters "evil mongers"...calling his remarks unfortunate and inappropriate.

Some supporters of the president's plans even practice their willingness to follow him...talk about mind-numbed robots.

It's good to see that even in death, Sen. Kennedy can still help promote the cause of Health Care Reform.

Yeah... lets not bring up how these right-wing hypocrites advocated for and cheer-lead on about changing the names of everything not tied down short of renaming America, Reaganland... not to mention how some of these crackpots wanted to replace Raygun on what was it... the $10 or $20 dollar bill!

Of course... I, like most of us in here, expected this kind of reaction to the death of the last great old-school liberals in DC!

At the core of health care is *life.* And life is a fundamental right. Kennedy wielded his power to deny the right of life to millions of Americans. It is a sad unfortunate fact of his shadowy legacy.

You are so narrow in your view of "life." You obviously think only of life on planet earth, when in the view of a real Christian, life is eternal and ever evolving at the point of being.
And you ignore the reality of the soul, which passes from life to life.

You're just taking a cheap shot and you're the one falling short, and in the shadows.
