Fox's Baier falsely suggests CA won't receive "millions of stimulus dollars" for forest firefighting

September 14, 2009 7:41 am ET — 13 Comments

Citing a report that the U.S. Forest Service "will spend $2.7 million in the nation's capital," Fox News host Bret Baier falsely suggested that Washington, D.C., rather than California, "will receive millions of stimulus dollars allocated for forest firefighting." In fact, the Forest Service has announced that more than $60 million in stimulus funds has been allocated for "Wildland Fire Management" projects in California, and the Department of the Interior has committed another $3.3 million for "Hazardous Fuels Reduction" in the state.

Baier: "Even though" CA has been battling fires, "it is Washington, D.C., that will receive millions" for forest firefighting

From the September 11 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Bret Baier:

BAIER: Even though Californians have battling -- have been battling raging forest fires, it is Washington, D.C., that will receive millions of stimulus dollars allocated for forest firefighting.

The Washington Times reports the Forest Service has announced it will spend $2.7 million in the nation's capital. The money will go to the group Washington Parks and People, which sponsors festivals and refurbishes urban parks.

One California Republican lawmaker whose district has seen some of the worst fires says, quote, "Funds that should be used to thin our overgrown forests and protect the public are being frivolously spent on park restoration."

Our calls to the Forest Service were not returned.

CA is set to receive 20 times more stimulus dollars than D.C. to fight forest fires

$60 million for "Wildland Fire Management" projects in California. As of September 9, the Forest Service has announced numerous projects for "Wildland Fire Management" to be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act totaling more than $60 million.

$3.3 million from the Office of Wildland Fire. The Interior Department's Office of Wildland Fire has also announced that $3.3 million in stimulus funds will go toward "Hazardous Fuels Reduction" in California.

What a disgustingly slimy, misleading headline! And it's the best kind of lie: Nothing false about it! CA IS fighting forrest fires and DC IS recieving 'Millions' for thier parks.

Rather a large, Sixty Million Dollar, omission though, don't you think?

Fox News is yellow journalism at it's best. Maybe even more so... Maybe we should start calling it 'Red' journalism?

So, I guess it is just the people of California who need to stop building in wild fire zones? What about people in the Carolinas, or in Michigan? Anywhere there is undergrowth, that isn't removed, you are technically in a wild fire zone.

Granted, I personally have issues where people insist on building homes in California (mountainsides, etc) but; I also have issues with people who build houses on the ocean in hurricane areas.

Tornado alley, within 2000 miles downwind of the Yellowstone hot spot, over an active fault. Whatever's left would be mighty crowded.

Yup, there was some "Dateline", or similar show, back a few years ago. They went to all these homes on the San Andreas fault and asked why people were living there. Most of them didn't even realize where the fault line was (nder their house).

        Dear Welfare King

Stop driving on government roads for free and costing me money for your welfare. Stop eating food and drinking water that I have to pay hard earned money in taxes to make sure you and your family don't die from poisoning. Close any bank accounts at all that you may have because I don't want to continue to pay for the free insurance that you get from the FDIC, where if the bank goes bankrupt and loses all your money like Washington Mutual did, you don't lose all of your deposit. How dare you have free government insured bank accounts.

Also stop living anywhere near a fire station. I am sure your neighbors are sick of paying for making sure your home is protected in case of fire FOR FREE.

        American Taxpayers

The irony is that many of these "fire zones" areas probably weren't fire zones until recently due to global warming.

Of course that's ridiculous. The most recent forest fire in LA was arson. And many of them are nature's way of clearing brush that hasn't burned for 50 years, sad and destructive to be sure for those who lost property and even more for those who lose loved ones, but global warming isn't causing forest fires.

Nope, deforestation due to climate change and drought has nothing to do with fires. Well, OK maybe it does but; it was the arsonist fault, not the fact that homes were built in an area where the underbrush had not been cleared in 40 years.

Most of California is dry as a bone for a good part of the year, so many areas can be considered wildfire zones. It's not a rainforest like OR or WA...
