Drudge's suggestion that Obama "Caught by Surprise" by Iranian nuke facility contradicted by linked article

September 25, 2009 8:29 pm ET — 8 Comments

The Drudge Report posted a headline that falsely claimed that President Obama was "Caught By Surprise" by Iran's acknowledgement that it is building a second nuclear facility. In fact, the Washington Post article to which Drudge linked quoted a senior White House official stating, "We've been aware of this facility for several years, building up a case so that we had very strong evidence."

On September 25, the Drudge Report displayed this image and link, which pointed to a September 25 Washington Post article:

Wash. Post quotes White House official stating, "We've been aware of this facility for several years"

From the September 25 Washington Post article:

But White House officials said Western intelligence agencies have known about the facility for several years and believe that Iran acknowledged its existence Monday in an attempt to head off intense criticism that they knew was coming.

"We believe that the Iranians learned that the secrecy of the facility had been compromised," a senior White House official said Friday morning. "We've been aware of this facility for several years, building up a case so that we had very strong evidence." [The Washington Post, 9/25/09]

NY Times, Fox News also report Obama administration knew about Iranian facility

New York Times: "American officials said that they had been tracking the covert project for years":

American officials said that they had been tracking the covert project for years, but that Mr. Obama decided to disclose the American findings after Iran discovered, in recent weeks, that Western intelligence agencies had breached the secrecy surrounding the complex. On Monday, Iran wrote a brief, cryptic letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency, saying that it now had a "pilot plant" under construction, whose existence it had never before revealed. Fox News: Administration official said "U.S. has been tracking the secret project for years":

A senior administration official told FOX News that the U.S. has been tracking the secret project for years, but Obama's announcement comes after Iran discovered in recent weeks that the West had been monitoring the project. [FoxNews.com, 9/25/09]

This is a waste of your time. Matt Drudge is not a reporter.

If you read his headlines and the linked articles every day, you will notice that he often times just invents his own title to create a phony theme.

It is a favorite ploy of his.

The real crime here is that DC insider beltway journalists still read his page every day and treat him like he's a news source.

Further, the nuke site was developed on the G. W. Bush watch which these Obama ccritics seem to leave out of their comments. Very selective reporting thast actually puts foirth a lie by not giving the facts. Of course, who would ever expect either to tell the truth about any misjudgment of G. W. The mess throughout the world and the financial meltdown all occurred on the Bush watch you selective liars.

Come on here, do you really expect some right wing nut-job to take the time to click on a link and read something?

If Drudge, Boss Limbaugh, Hannity, or rodeo clown Beck says something, that good enough for them.

Never assume we are dealing with folks that have any intellectual curiosity.

I disagree 100% that it's a waste of time for MMFA to cover this guy, and it's because of what you said in your third sentence - that Drudge has more credibility with others than what he deserves.

I think MMFA needs to document every time Drudge does this kind of stuff - states one thing in the headline, then contradicts that in the body of the article.

Every now and then I get imaptient and think that MMFA is not covering a subject or media entity because they are picking their battles... But in wiser moments, I consider the fact that the American media is massive, especially with the blossoming of the internet media, and that MMFA would probably need to double or triple their staff to hit on every dubious statement made by the morons posing as our intelligencia... But in essence I agree that every false statement should be called out and exposed...
