Fox News accuses Obama of delaying troop deployment to win Nobel Peace Prize

October 13, 2009 11:37 am ET — 46 Comments

Fox News personalities have reacted to President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize by accusing Obama of -- in the words of Fox News contributor Dick Morris -- "delaying the decision to commit troops to Afghanistan" in order to "win this prize." Responding to initial reports that Obama was awarded the peace prize, Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade said he was "wondering" whether the Nobel charter "has anything to do with the delay of the deployment of 40,000 troops in Afghanistan," adding, "If you add forces to a war, you can't win."

Fox News personalities accuse Obama of withholding troops to secure Nobel Peace Prize

Morris: Obama "delaying the decision to commit troops to Afghanistan ... because he wanted this prize." During an appearance on the October 12 edition of Hannity, Morris stated, "I think the reason that Obama was delaying the decision to commit troops to Afghanistan is because he wanted this prize, and he probably knew he was nominated for it, he knew roughly when the decision is being made, and I don't think he's going to send troops until after that award is safely in his pocket." [Fox News' Hannity, 10/12/09]

Kilmeade: "I'm wondering, does [the Nobel Peace Prize charter] have anything to do with the delay of the deployment of 40,000 troops in Afghanistan?" Responding to initial reports that Obama had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Kilmeade stated, "I'm looking at the charter -- and we're just getting this now -- but this guy, Alfred Nobel, stipulated the peace prize should go to the person who will have done the most or the best work of the fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses. I'm wondering, does that have anything to do with the delay of the deployment of 40,000 troops in Afghanistan, because that was his big postulization over the last week or so. 'Should I put more troops in?' " Kilmeade went on to say, "If you add forces to a war, you can't win." [Fox News' Fox & Friends, 10/9/09]

Considering that nobody knows they have been nominated . . . I'm thinking FALSE.

Besides, Obama had already ordered a troop deployment.

Perfect example of Fox News asking the "tough questions". Brian "I'm wondering" Kilmeade's question is actually a follow-up to Fox News' tough question of whether or not the Obamas engaged in a "terrorist fist jab" back in June 2008.

FoxNews is really loosing it these days, especially with Sean Hannity. Just today Sean stated on his radio show that he heard of people in churches being told to "fist bump" each other instead of shaking hands as a way to "Not" spread germs, LOL. Huh?

We laughed so hard, and thought of how Sean's memory had slipped again. Remember, just last year FoxNews claimed that a "fist bump" was a hidden code for Terrorists? Uh, oh. LOL

That's just freakin' stupid. First I'm pretty sure the nominees are not told they've been nominated. Second Obama has done far more in Afghanistan in just a few months than Bush did in his last 5 years in office. And finally while the Nobel Peace Prize is a great honor a far greater honor is being President of the USA. I agree that Obama didn't really deserve the prize but so does he. You don't like it blame the Nobel committee. Not the prize winner.

The nomination deadline was 2 weeks into the presidency....so what you really have to accuse Obama of is being in on the secret that he was going to win, or that he was notified ahead of time, since he made an increase in Afghanistan before he won as well.

I'm not sure I love how many of these peace prizes are given out each year and the pretty gray criteria for them, but this certainly isn't Obama's fault or something he's made any policy decisions over, in my opinion.

It's another hideous, baseless accusation against Obama by Fox. To essentially say that Obama is making foreign policy decisions, that put our soldiers in harm's way in a time of war, in hopes of winning a Nobel prize is absolutely dreadful. Is there nothing that Obama can do that these people won't drag through the political mud?

And Fox's defense is that won't be a mouthpiece for the Obama administration like the rest of the media is. Yet that is exactly what they were for Bush. Can their hypocrisy be any more on display?

Well, you know, Obama knew he was nominated, he also knew when the selection process ended. Just like his mother knew he would some day be the President of the United States so she faked a birth announcement in Hawaii, as well as the birth certificate. Those Obama's, proof of ESP!!

Actually, I'm not from the LW, but the things most folks [right and left] criticized Bush for were documents by government reports. His administration lied our country into the unnecessary invasion of Iraq, walked ALL over the Constitution, specifically the Fourth Amendment and just lied and lied and lied. No comparison.

I guess you're one of the 25%ers who will continue to believe that Bush was a good president no matter what the copious evidence to the contrary is. Sad.

That's the problem, they DO see this as being something bad. After all, Arafat won it too, so it must mean nothing right?

Of course, that's not the truth, and being honored with a Nobel Peace Prize is never a BAD thing, but apparently, it is when it's Obama, or any other liberal person from the United States.

just what was the award FOR? Giving a good speech? Just what of substance
has Obama accomplished that merits the Nobel Peace prize? Has he negotiated a peace treaty between long time foes in the middle eat like
Carter did? Has his foreign policy led to real reduction in nuclear proliferation? Apparently the award is for having the right intentions, since Obama has accomplished nothing.

One more time . . . go to the Nobel Committee's website. It is THEIR prize, THEIR criteria and THEIR decision. What you or I or the Fox idiots/Rush think is completely irrelevant. Your anger is misdirected toward Mr. Obama. He had nothing whatsoever to do with the selection . . . in fact, as the Committee noted, HE looked uncomfortable with the selection. Turning it down would have been an insult to the Committee . . . the money will go to charity. Let it go.

And if you can name a half dozens officials, who have made the ultimate sacrifice, I'd be impressed.

Whatever. The GOP earns every ounce of disdain they receive. They do nothing but impede progress; always have.

It was Republicans who fought against women's suffrage, they fought civil rights activists; they fought against the 40 hour work week, the minimum wage, vacation time, the 8 hour work day, child labor laws, social security, unemployment benefits and every stride toward a more just society that liberals have brought forth. You guys suck. You hate freedom and equality. For the sake of humanity, you deserve to be marginalized.

Fox News Media need to have more respect for President Obama. Since Mr. Obama has been elected, why is it the media try to hold the president to everything that happen beyond the president control. President Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize and more. It is a shame when the media focus on negative matters instead of being thankful for the man who President Obama is truly is. He is a legend and a dedicaed to public service. Being the first african american is more than enough to win the nobel peace prize.

Mr. President keep up the excellent and dedicated work. You are the hardest working president this country has ever had. I'm thankful that "God" placed you in office and may you continue to be blessed by "God's" grace. You are a winner.

So, the best you can do is quibble with definitions? Morris is frequently brought on to Faux Snooze shows to provide analysis of the news. I would say that does make him a news personality. I notice you didn't question the application of the term to Kilmeade, so I guess you're granting the accuracy of applying the term to him.

So, what do you think of the charge that they're making against Obama with no evidence to support them and in complete contradiction of the facts? Or is pointing that out another "smear" of Faux?

Kissinger was awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for helping to establish a ceasefire and US withdrawal from Vietnam. The ceasefire, however, was not durable. Kissinger favored the maintenance of friendly diplomatic relationships with right-wing military dictatorships in the Southern Cone and elsewhere in Latin America.

Also, Kissinger is criticized and even accused of war crimes for the policies he promoted during the Vietnam war. That got him the Nobel Peace Prize.
