WND falsely claimed alleged Fort Hood shooter "advised Obama transition"

November 06, 2009 11:03 am ET — 61 Comments

WorldNetDaily falsely claimed that alleged Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan "advised Obama transition" in the headline of an article by Jerome Corsi highlighting his listing as a "participant" in a report for the Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) at George Washington University's Presidential Transition Task Force. However, Corsi himself acknowledges that there is no evidence that "the group played any formal role in the official Obama transition" -- indeed, the Task Force was initiated in April 2008. Moreover, while Hasan was listed as one of approximately 300 "Task Force Event Participants" in the report's appendix, HSPI has reportedly said he was not a "member" of the Task Force, and was listed because he RSVP'd for several of the group's open events.

WND article featured false headline "Shooter advised Obama transition"

From the November 6 WND article:

WND claim contradicted by HSPI report and WND article itself

Corsi: No evidence "the group played any formal role in the official Obama transition." In his article, Corsi wrote: "While the GWU task force participants included several members of government, including representatives of the Department of Justice and the U.S Department of Homeland Security, there is no indication in the document that the group played any formal role in the official Obama transition, other than to serve in a university-based advisory capacity."

HSPI Presidential Transition Task Force initiated in April 2008 -- well before Obama's election. According to the HSPI Presidential Task Force report Corsi uses to establish the link between Hasan and the organization, "in April 2008 The George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) established the Presidential Transition Task Force, comprised of national and homeland security experts, policymakers and practitioners."

According to HSPI, Hasan not a Task Force member, listed because he RSVP'd for groups' open events. In a November 6 blog post, Gawker reported:

FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: Daniel Kaniewski, the institute's deputy director, confirms that Hasan attended task force meetings as an audience member, and stresses that he was not a member of the task force. "All of our events are open to the public," Kaniewski says, "and when someone RSVPs we put their name in the [report] so everyone knows who was in the room." He says institute staffers recall Hasan attending at least one task force event, and that he RSVP'd for several. "We do recall him speaking at one of our events as an audience member," he says, "but none of us recall what he actually said. Generally, our events are attended by people in the homeland security community, and Hasan had a very legitimate reason to be there. He was a fellow at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences."

Hasan was listed in the group's report as one of roughly 300 "Task Force Event Participants."

Corsi and the WND have no credability whatsoever.

The Right should be embarrassed by their spokespeople these days.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------
But that would require shame, which they lack the capacity for.

I used to think the Tea baggers had no credibility, but look at the Republican leadership falling in line with them in NY-23's Congressional race, and, even after that failure, climbed all over themselves yesterday to pander to the tea baggers at that anti-health reform rally in Washington, D.C. When they start to fall inline with the dimmest dimbulb ever elected to office in this country, I am never discounting any of these nuts.

Yes amazing that my own party can just skip over facts and rabble rouse about the silliest things. They waste little time in getting facts. They just shoot from the hips even though it makes them look so stupid. My hope is that my arty can eventually return to the Bob Dole sort of sanity when it was so obvious it was America first and party second. My invitation to all Republicans is that they take a deep breath, that they stick with the facts and that they act like real Americans. You know? My country is the focus of my thoughts not this silly partisanship. How wonderful it would have been if they had held G. W. to at least a minimum of the things they are trying to push off on Obama when in fact, he is obviously not in the twilight zone like G. W. was.

If it hadn't been due to Hasan's RSVP-ing as just one more of 300 participants in the 'Task Force', they would've tried tying it in some other way, magnolialover. Maybe Hasan was Obama's super-secrety muslim 'big brother' as Obama continues trying to hide his belief in Allah. Maybe they both put their pants on left leg first.

Let's see how long this takes to get into MSM, though. That's the thing I'm most curious about.

I've got another good tie to the Obama administration and Nazis. Thought of this one last night.

The Obama administration has a lot of employees.

Some of those employees no doubt drive Volkswagens.

A VW was driven by, and promoted by, HITLER!

Ergo, there are some Nazis working in the White House.

How disgusting. We just witnessed a modern Kent State Massacre and all you can do is whine about politics? Obama is the COMMANDER IN CHIEF. I too wish this was led directly by the chain of command that worked their way up in the military before some narcissistic politician, that way tycoons can't get in the middle and stop investigations as to why 13 lives were unnecessarily lost.

The behavior people show during moments of crisis gives us insight as to how they feel about the most important matters that we face.

In this case, Jerome Corsi is lying about the President of the United States.

If you don't want to read media criticism, why are you at Media Matters?

Have you visited ESPN.com and asked them why they are talking about sports today instead of the shootings?

Have you gone to Playboy.com and asked them why they are showing porn instead of talking about the shootings?

As for narcissism, that's a serious charge to make. Narcissism is a serious complex whereby a person with a fragile ego becomes self-absorbed to avoid any outside criticism. Sounds more like our prior President than our current one.

The thing about the rightwing's psychotically reflexive lying on EVERY subject is that if they ever DID find out some unknown, extremely important revelation, the only ones who would believe it would be the same morons believing everything from the birthers b.s. to George Soros controlling the DNC. You'd think they'd relize eventually that by manufacturing "scandal" after "scandal" they have made themselves permanently untrustworthy to the majority of Americans. Not to mention, it shows how little they can actually find fault with President Obama on since their "outrages" are all manufactured and are all lies.

Puzzling. Isn't it? But that is the point actually. To many conservatives that hear manufacutured outrage after distorted quote after racist comment, they will still be conservatives and will still support those tactics. Why? Because they can always fall back on the false smear that the left does the exact same thing. Somehow they convince themselves that a vicious lie out of Beck's mouth is the EXACT same thing as a viscious truth out of Olbermann's mouth.

This is a perfect point, while arguing with so called "Christian repugs" they used that same argument when I was using statistics to prove our system is not that good for a civilized society. When they told me the right wing talking point that reining in ins. companies will put them all out of business. When I asked about bookstores, (libraries) and Universities (private vs public) they said "apples to oranges" so they will not listen to truth, they don't want to help poor people or sick children, unless they do it on a stage, and then use the lamest of arguments (they do it too) never being able to give me an example and denying facts and using slogans to discount actual factual arguments!

It's kind of scary that a group of people would so easily take a Sorosbuck to hide valid information involving 13 Americans were killed at Ft. Hood during the massacre. His patronage is more important than the lives of American citizens, their deaths are felt as deeply as the victims of Columbine, the VA Tech Massacre and the Kent State Shootings.

And on that note, the Muslim community has been reaching out during the incident because they sincerely care about maintaining relations in America. And it's going to work because THEY CARE.

The left winged talking heads haven't even come forth with their condolences but played the race card and started throwing blame around with bad facts.

      Show some class, will you?

Some of these people and the tea party nuts will go to any extreme to discredit Obama, even if it means destroying their own country. Don't you remember how they set up Joe the plumber to discredit him. I know many good republicans, who are just staying out of it. They are embarrassed by what the what the others are doing. It's a shame that a few are trying to ruin everything for the rest of us.
