Quick Fact: Fox Nation asks, "Did Obama Tell Chinese We're Chauvinists?"

November 18, 2009 2:32 pm ET — 15 Comments

Linking to a Rush Limbaugh radio transcript titled, "As American Men Chickify, Obama Tells Chinese We're Chauvinists," the Fox Nation posted the headline "Did Obama Tell Chinese We're Chauvinists?"

From The Fox Nation accessed on November 18:

chauvinists

Clicking the headline took readers to a page that provided a spliced quote from Obama's November 16 town hall meeting in Shanghai. From The Fox Nation:

Did Obama Tell Chinese We're Chauvinists?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: It's very important for the United States not to assume that what is good for us is automatically good for somebody else. We have to have some modesty about our attitudes towards other countries. We think it's important nevertheless to be true to our ideals and our values, and we -- when we do so, though, we will always do so with the humility and understanding that we are not perfect and that we still have much progress to make. Uh, if you talk to women in America, they will tell you that there are still men who have a lot of old-fashioned ideas about the role of women in society.

Fact: Obama said U.S. will "speak out" against oppression of women around the world while noting "we are not perfect"

The Fox Nation's spliced quote omitted Obama's statement that "it is the view of the United States that it is important for us to affirm the rights of women all around the world. And if we see certain societies in which women are oppressed, or they are not getting opportunities, or there is violence towards women, we will speak out." Obama further stated, "Now, there may be some people who disagree with us, and we can have a dialogue about that. But we think it's important, nevertheless, to be true to our ideals and our values. And we -- and when we do so, though, we will always do so with the humility and understanding that we are not perfect and that we still have much progress to make. If you talk to women in America, they will tell you that there are still men who have a lot of old-fashioned ideas about the role of women in society."

Why can't Obama just go out there and say what we do and what our values are? That is more than sufficient. Why does have to have to always tell people how we don't like to tell others what to do and that we are not perfect? Always qualifying our values instead of just stating them.

because we spent 8 years making the world hate us because we tried to impose out superior values on them. all Obama is doing is letting the world know that we understand that there are very real cultural differences between countries. ask anyone who travels a lot outside of the U.S. people in those countries like the systems they have a really don't like us telling them how were so great and their so stupid.

Bush is no longer in office, the world knows it and they know the new direction in foreign policy and the way we operate around the world. We can stop qualifying our values anymore and just say what they are, period.

Instead of saying we are this and we are that, but we don't tell anyone else what to do and we are not perfect; I would've stopped at we are that. Obama never does.

He is pointing out that we don't have total control over what other countries do. Places like China don't react well to preaching and taunting. He is trying to use persuation.

Classic Obama hatred spewing from right ON. No matter what Obama does or says is OK with people like you. He did too much of this, not enough of that, he bows, he talks, he doesn't like war enough, etc. etc.

I think it took something like 2 days before righties lost their mind over this president.

Kind of pathetic, don't you think?

fox nation is not doing any reporting here, they seem to be doing research. look at the headline, they are just asking. so i think we should help them out. the answer they are looking for is no, Obama did not say that at all. now i have a question for fox nation. are all the people in fox nation knuckle dragging troglodytes or just the one who write the stories?

As usual the Fox story is pretty much the exactly the opposite of the truth. Obama was commenting on other countries.

I love the chyron, "Our most embarrassing President?" Uh, no. The House of Bush has pretty much locked that one up for the foreseeable future.
