Fox & Friends hosts falsely suggest Organizing for America director compared Palin to a terrorist

November 23, 2009 7:44 am ET — 35 Comments

On Fox & Friends, co-hosts Gretchen Carlson, Brian Kilmeade, and Steve Doocy falsely suggested that Organizing for America director Mitch Stewart compared Sarah Palin to a terrorist when he wrote in a fundraising letter that her book tour is "dangerous." In fact, Stewart wrote that her tour is "dangerous" because Palin uses it as a platform to make false attacks on Democrats, and then the falsehoods are "widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups."

Fox & Friends suggests OFA director compared Palin to a terrorist

From the November 23 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends:

DOOCY: All right, meanwhile, as we talk about those Gitmo guys, you know who's really dangerous? Is it Khalid Shaikh Mohammed? Is it --

KILMEADE: Major Hasan?

DOOCY: -- any of those guys? No. There's an organization out there called Organizing for America, which is Barack Obama's online group. And one of the guys in charge of that is saying that something that is really dangerous is the Sarah Palin book tour.

CARLSON: Well, apparently, because they are trying to create, you know, a firestorm again. She's an easy target, and so now she could be more dangerous than any terrorist out there. In the meantime, there's all that confusion, too. You remember that other book was coming out at the exact same time that looked just like her book, except it's called Going Rouge? There it is. You know, it's very confusing. It looks very similar, so apparently some people are being confused by the two books.

KILMEADE: Harper Collins has taken out money to put out ads together so people know how to order the right book. But I'll tell you one thing. This is why I think, tactically and politically, they should fear Sarah Palin. This book sale --

DOOCY: Absolutely.

KILMEADE: -- and her popularity are so much bigger than even her supporters could imagine.

DOOCY: Right. And so it's a little payback from Harper Collins, because they didn't like the idea that, rather than Going Rogue, there was this Going Rouge book out. So people who type in Going Rouge will actually be redirected to buy the actual book. And that organizing group from the Barack Obama organization, what they're doing is they're trying to raise half a million dollars to, quote, "push back against Sarah Palin and her allies." Push back.

OFA director called Palin's book tour "dangerous" because of the misinformation she spreads and in no way compared Palin to a terrorist

Stewart: Palin's tour is "dangerous" because her falsehoods are advanced by the media and right-wing groups. In a November fundraising email, Stewart wrote: "Right now, Sarah Palin is on a highly publicized, nationwide book tour, attacking President Obama and his plan for health reform at every turn" and that "[i]t's dangerous. Remember, this is the person who coined the term 'Death Panels' -- and opened the flood gates for months of false attacks by special interests and partisan extremists." He continued: "Whatever lie comes next will be widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups and others who are trying to defeat reform." From the email:

The only danger is that Palin is popular, and out speaking the truth. The dems are very afraid of someone who they constantly label as an idiot and lightweight. Very amusing actually.

From what I've seen of her, the "truth" she is mainly speaking on her book promotion tour is that the McCain campaign sandbagged her.

Can you throw in any more examples of the truth she is speaking?

Mitch Stewart's use of the word "dangerous' connotes much more than the damage Palin can do to the Democratic Party and he knows it. So we then get SNL's Palin 2012 video of the world being destroyed. And then Martha Stewart also declares her dangerous.

The intent for Organizing for America was to spread the 'Palin is dangerous' meme. All they need to do is say that word and let it go viral. This is a lame excuse for an organization that knows how the game is played.

Well, calling someone dangerous, and then saying why you think she's dangerous, is a LOT different than equating someone with terrorists, or terrorism. I mean, it's not as if Palin ever did that to someone else... Oh, wait, she DID.

hoosier, it's clear from the context of the letter that Mitch Stewart meant Sarah Palin's lies were dangerous to health coverage reform. It's the primary subject of the entire e-mail. Out of curiosity, if that one word 'dangerous' so concerns you, how do you feel about the following:
"I fear an event. I fear a Reichstag moment, a -- God forbid -- another 9-11, something that will turn this machine on, and power will be seized and voices will be silenced. God help us all.''
        (here)
"I don't know where this ends up. I'll tell you what worries me, is that -- is that you think that [Obama's] finished. That's your mistake. A cornered animal is very, very dangerous. This team -- team Obama -- is very cornered right now, and they're very dangerous -- very dangerous. Cornered animal -- dangerous."
        (here)
Military intervention is what Obama's exponentially accelerating agenda for "fundamental change" toward a Marxist state is inviting upon America. A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama's radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible.
        (here)
"The only reason you put military anywhere is to win and win as quickly as you can, as ruthlessly as you can, because mercifully it will be over quick, instead of turning it into a meat grinder. I'm looking at -- guys, look, I love you all who go over there and serve, but I gotta tell you right now, run for your life, get out, this guy is gonna get you killed. Man, these people are scary."
        (here)
You can try to put the lid on this group of people, but you will never silence us. You will never -- you can shoot me in the head, you can shoot the next guy in the head, but there will be 10 others that line up. And it may not happen today, it may not happen next week, but freedom will be restored in this land. Period. And no matter what you want to call it, it is a totalitarian state that you're headed towards.
        (here)
"Those crazies in Montana who say, 'We're going to kill ATF agents because the U.N.'s going to take over' -- well, they're beginning to have a case."
        (here)
"At what point do the people tell the politicians to go to hell? At what point do they get off the couch, march down to their state legislator's house, pull him outside, and beat him to a bloody pulp for being an idiot?"
        (here)
"You have got to say no to this, and if they push this through, you need to riot in the streets. You need to riot in the streets." He further said, "Our country was built on revolution and it's about time we took it back. These people are dangerous," and "It's about time to put an end to this leftist control of this country, and if a revolution is what it takes, damn it , then that's what it's going to take, because liberty will not be denied."

Well, Newe Frontier, too bad that's not what the post here is complaining about, oddly enough.

But let's see how rapidly the 'Sarah Palin is dangerous' meme catches on and let's see how often the danger is conveyed as being attributed to the misinformation she spreads around.

SNL didn't explain it that way, and neither did the ex-convict, Martha Stewart.

hoosier, SNL and Glenn Beck are both entertainment programs. The difference is that progressives know that SNL is supposed to be funny. FauxCons really can't tell that Glenn is just kidding with his 'guv-mint is dangerous, Obama is the debbil!' shtick.

If I want advice for how to stuff my bird on Thanksgiving, I'd call on Martha Stewart. Politics? Not so much. Or, was that your feeble attempt at conflating Martha Stewart and Mitch Stewart because they happen to have the same last name? Because, Mitch is not an ex-convict.

SNL is a comedy show. Always has been, always will be (and yes, I know, sometimes it's not very funny, so the word "comedy" can be taken for granted at times in regards to SNL).

I'm pretty sure NOBODY goes to SNL for political commentary. Satire, yes, actual commentary, no.

I'm also pretty sure that nobody goes to Martha Stewart for political commentary either. As someone else said, if I want to know how to stuff a turkey, I'll go see Martha, other than that, and maybe some home decorating ideas, I won't be seeing Martha.

The post here is complaining about how someone said Palin is dangerous, and that person then explained why they think Palin is dangerous. The problem comes about when someone else, Fox and Friends, takes that statement of being dangerous, and turns it into "someone is calling poor Sarah a terrorist", which they weren't.

I do agree for instance, that Palin is dangerous in many different ways, but none of them equate to her being a terrorist.

Oh, conservatives want to deal in how a word "connotes" something? I guess we can expect Limbaugh to be off the air, then, since "man-child" connotes the racial slur of "boy". We can look forward to the end of arguments about how Limbaugh is taken out of context, because the context here clearly demonstrates that "dangerous" has absolutely nothing to do with terrorism.

Hey, Mitch Stewart, a man after my own heart! LOL

I consistently argue here and elsewhere that the failure to stop giving legitimacy to nonsense hurts our nation. We have to stop the toxic poisoning of our national debate. We need to be able to fairly discuss issues without having to waste time debunking stupidness and ignorance. We need to stop giving legitimacy to groups like FoxNews and people like Sarah Palin.

Anyone with a platform that will use it to deliberately spread lies, distortion, hatespeech to invoke extreme reactions and not rational discourse is indeed dangerous.Sarah has plenty of rightwing company in this regard. The media should stop pretending that this woman knows what she is talking about until she gives serious interviews or press conferences to explain her extreme views.Just look at her dangerous position on expanding Israeli settlements on Palestinian land...basically she said Israel is always right and should be supported....No attempt to see a balanced/total view or way to reconcile differences just let Israel do what it wants. She would already be cutting taxes if (God forbid) she were President and have more troops on the way to Afghanistan already.(She ignores that it would leave us with almost no troops to address anything else.)We can't pay for current troop levels now engaged and she would cut taxes while escalating a war!She has no exit strategy just sound bites - "do what McCrystal says"!!!.She is worse than Bush!!!Her lies and bad policy positions are never addressed because she does no real interviews.Barbara Walters,Oprah Winfrey was mostly social coverage..and sheonlyget intervieswed by right wing media that challenge nothing she says with facts or in depth analysis!!!!!

Hmmmm. . . President Obama, against every legal precedent in the laws of this nation since its founding, allows for international terrorists, who were apprehended outside the U.S., to be tried with the same constitutional rights as U.S. citizens. This in and of itself is not legal and creates an incredibly dangerous legal precedent. One of the terrorist's defense attorneys was on Bill O'Reilly and would not even admit on air that people died on 9/11. Obama himself corrupted the process by stating that KSM would be executed after he was afforded a fair trial. What?? I just decided my kids are not going to apply to Harvard Law School.

Hmmmm. . . President Obama's first campaign fundraiser for the Illinois state legislature was financed in part by Bill Ayers, a known and unrepentent domestic terrorist whose organization murdered numerous people and injured many others.

All that notwithstanding, I believe Carlson was making a flippant remark, and not a direct comparrison. Sort of like when Jesse Jackson called New York "himeetown." Sorry, I don't know how to spell that derogatory term. We all gave him a pass for that one, right?
