Fox News repeatedly advanced CEI fellow's accusations NASA is "manipulating data on climate change" without noting CEI received millions from oil industry

December 04, 2009 12:12 pm ET — 10 Comments

On December 3, a FoxNews.com article and Special Report host Bret Baier both reported that Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) senior fellow Christopher Horner has threatened to sue NASA, alleging that the space agency has distorted climate change data; additionally, Horner appeared on the December 3 edition of Fox News' Hannity and the December 4 edition of Fox & Friends to discuss Horner's accusations. However, not once during these segments did Fox News personalities note that CEI has received millions of dollars from Exxon Mobil Corp. and foundations linked to the oil industry.

Special Report, Hannity, and Fox & Friends all advanced Horner's allegations without noting his goup's ties to oil industry

Special Report and FoxNews.com reported on Horner's allegations; Horner appeared on Hannity and Fox & Friends. FoxNews.com and Special Report both reported on Horner's threat to sue NASA -- in Baier's words -- "over its alleged distortion of climate change data." Additionally, Horner appeared on the December 3 edition of Hannity and the December 4 edition of Fox & Friends to discuss his allegations. All four outlets described his association with CEI, but none of them disclosed CEI's ties to the oil industry.

CEI has received significant funding from oil industry sources

CEI has received millions of dollars from Exxon Mobil. According to reports compiled by Greenpeace, Exxon Mobil Corp. and its foundation donated more than $2 million to CEI from 1998 through 2005.

CEI has received more than $600,000 from Koch family foundations. According to data compiled by Media Matters Action Network, from 1986 through 2004, CEI received $666,420 from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, Claude R. Lambe Charitable Foundation, and David H. Koch Charitable Foundation and Personal Philanthropy. Charles and David Koch reportedly each own 42 percent of Koch Industries, whose subsidiaries "have been in the petroleum business since 1940" and "engage in petroleum refining, chemicals and base oil production, crude oil supply, and wholesale marketing of fuels, base oils, petrochemicals, asphalt and other products." The president of the Claude R. Lambe Charitable Foundation is Richard Fink, who is also president of the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation. Fink is "an executive vice president and member of the board of directors of Koch Industries, Inc., where he leads the legal, government, community relations and communication capabilities for Koch Industries," according to his bio on the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation's website.

This is what I don't get. Why would Fox not disclose all of that information about Horner? Fox viewers could care less and it would probably enhance his credibility with them. They don't care about the credits, they came for the show.

A bigger problem with all of this is they are advancing something that has no evidence and committing slander against those scientists that work at NASA. Disgraceful.

      Oh boy! Here we go!

Deniers can't get around the fact that there's a whole lot of proxy data out there, generated by many independent sources: NOAA, NASA, Woods Hole, various universities, etc.

      So, now the conspiracy grows!!!

NASA MUST be a part of it!!!

Next, they'll claim others must be part of this ginormous conspiracy!!!!!!

      Where will it stop???

I guess it will stop when they get the straight jackets out.

Clarification - if you don't know what "proxy" data is, here's a link that explains it pretty well.

        http://www.skepticalscience.com/Hockey-stick-without-tree-rings.html

And a link that shows the readings of the troposphere (lower altitudes) and the stratosphere (higher altitudes). Of course, it's from that lying NASA group! If GW weren't real, and caused by greenhouse gasses, we'd see BOTH trending the same. (So much for that theory that the sun's causing this.)

I'd LOVE to see this guy get into a courtroom with NASA and real scientists. It will be another Dover, PA lawsuit, with the same result.

I saw this guy on Hannity. He is a lawyer, so it is not like he would be able to make sense of any of the data. He is nothing but a shill for the oil companies.

-- CEI has received millions of dollars from Exxon Mobil Corp -- mmfa

Maybe some day mmfa will disclose who funds their organization...and then we can judge all of mmfa's statements based on the beliefs of their donors...

How 'bout it mmfa...when are you gonna come clean and disclose your funding?

Wow. Fantastic question Wes! But I am sure your already know parts of the answer. George Soros of course, but then the Illuminati,
the Freemasons, the Bilderberg Group, and the Bohemian Club
are all big supporters. Bill Clinton and Al Gore would, of course, be big donors. Lesser known funders include the Federal Reserve and the World Bank, both acting out of their secret underground headquarters 50,000 feet below Denver International Airport. I would be remiss if I failed to mention the CIA, the IRS, and the Phoebus Cartel. MMFA needed their help when they engineered the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004.

MMFA was also a spinoff of the original Mantauk Project--a fact known only by a few of us insiders. And I hope you haven't bought into the "DTV Transition". If you have one of the new set-top boxes we now know everything about you. Unfortunately people like you are so boring and predictable we have a hard time paying anyone to keep track. And oh yes the Committe of 300 and, of course, ACORN. Thank goodness Glenn Beck is around to keep MMFA accountable.

But be careful Wes--GCSB Waihopai is actually run by the Mormons, Sun Myung Moon, and Richard Mellon Scaife. And I know you remember what happened to Steve Kangas.

So let me get this straight, just like Senator Boxer, the issue is not the fraud and outright lies regarding AGW, but that something else is afoot? Oh I see, it's big oil that is funding this therefore that is all the evidence needed? How about the fact the Cap and Scam would cost trillions of dollars to companies like Exxon? You expect them to roll over and just pay? For some of you who were too busy with the skull bong, let's go back to 10th grade science: "Why even look at the emails, the question of AGW is moot, the theory has already been disproven.
In science the burden of proof is on the theory.
The theory must provide the proof.
If the theory makes a prediction, which it must to not simply be a hypothesis, and the prediction is wrong then the theory is discarded.
That is part of the scientific method.
The AGW theory predicts that an increase in CO2 causes an increase in global temperature.
CO2 is higher now then it was in 1990. Average global temperature is the same now as it was in 1990.
The prediction made by the theory is wrong therefore the AGW theory must be discarded.
            QED.
It is called the scientific method.
