Quick Fact: NY Post's Goodwin falsely claimed Bush had "a record of zero successful attacks on America after 9/11"

January 07, 2010 5:58 am ET — 18 Comments

In his January 6 New York Post column, Michael Goodwin advanced the false claim that former President George W. Bush had "a record of zero successful attacks on America after 9/11."

From Goodwin's January 6 New York Post column:

The images that stick are the ones out of Hawaii, with the president in vacation mode -- no tie, a perfunctory appearance on Dec. 28, no questions, then off for more fun in the sun. Behavior doesn't get less serious or more callow.

The images accurately reflect a troubling mindset that borders on religious faith about how to combat terrorism, with Obama himself the high priest. He is a war president who defiantly shuns the mantle.

So be it. The Oval Office and the choices are his. And so is the responsibility.

If America gets hit again, it's on him. All of it.

Obama often complains about the problems he inherited from George W. Bush, but he also inherited a record of zero successful attacks on America after 9/11. If Islamic terrorists succeed on his watch, he can't blame Bush.

Fact: Islamic terrorist attacks took place under Bush after 9-11

2002 attack against El Al ticket counter at LAX. In July 2002, Hesham Mohamed Hadayet opened fire at an El Al Airlines ticket counter at Los Angeles International Airport, killing two people and wounding four others before being shot dead. A 2004 Justice Department report stated that Hadayet's case had been "officially designated as an act of international terrorism."

2006 UNC SUV attack. In March 2006, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill graduate Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar drove an SUV into an area of campus, striking nine pedestrians. According to reports, Taheri-azar said he acted because he wanted to "avenge the deaths or murders of Muslims around the world." Taheri-azar also reportedly stated in a letter: "I was aiming to follow in the footsteps of one of my role models, Mohammad Atta, one of the 9/11/01 hijackers, who obtained a doctorate degree."

Fact: Other terrorist attacks also took place under Bush after 9-11

2001 Anthrax attacks. A March 2004 State Department report on "Significant Terrorist Incidents, 1961-2003" quotes then-Attorney General John Ashcroft saying of the letters containing anthrax mailed to various targets: "When people send anthrax through the mail to hurt people and invoke terror, it's a terrorist act." Five people were killed as a result of those letters in the autumn of 2001.

2002 DC-area sniper. The state of Virginia indicted Washington, D.C.-area sniper John Allen Muhammad -- along with his accomplice, a minor at the time -- on terrorism charges for one of the murders he committed during a three-week shooting spree across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Muhammad was convicted, sentenced to death, and subsequently executed for the crime.

Fact: Other conservatives have also denied existence of terrorist attacks under Bush

Frederick, Perino, Crowley ignore attacks that occurred during Bush term. As Media Matters for America has documented, other conservative media figures also have denied that terrorist attacks occurred under Bush after 9-11. Bush White House Press Secretary and current Fox News contributor Dana Perino falsely claimed on the November 24, 2009, edition of Fox News' Hannity that "[w]e did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush's term." In a January 3 column, Las Vegas Review-Journal publisher Sherman Frederick falsely claimed that "the two cases of domestic terrorism since 9/11" happened "on Obama's watch." And on the January 5 edition ofThe O'Reilly Factor, Fox News contributor Monica Crowley asserted that "[a]fter 9-11, President Bush and Vice President Cheney had a 100 percent perfect track record in keeping the homeland safe from an Islamic terrorist attack."

Ah yes, the short term memory loss continues for the "liberal" media once again. I guess, the Bush administration said this so many times, that people believed it and reported it back as truth. Even now.

Doesn't matter. The attack of 9/11 which occurred on HIS watch almost accomplished the goals of those who planned and prosecuted it.

And those only count the attacks INSIDE the US!

Remember: These idiots seem to think that Nepolitano is personally, 100% responsible for what happens in NIGERIA and the NETHERLANDS.

So using that logic, which should Bush (& co) be allowed to claim a perfect record on preventing islamic terrorism in light of the bombings in Madrid, London, Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillippines, Iraq, Afganistan, etc...

If you look at it globally, "Islamic Terrorism" can't really be said to have even DIMINISHED under Bush! It did for a while - after 9/11 and before Irag. A period of... what? About two years? But by his second term, Islamic Terrorism was, quite obviously, alive and well.

The failure of Bush's foreign policy are obvious to anyone not blindy clinging to the myth of Republican / Conservtaive superiority.

The truth is that they have NO CREDIBILITY on foreign policy, NO CREDIBILITY on fiscal policy and NO CREDIBILITY on 'family values.' Their fools. No, worse: They're serial LIARS. The fools ad the ones who follow them!

I agree with NiceguyEddie: Well-said. It's all about the Republicans and their tunnel vision, short memory, lack of responsibility (remember Bush's statement during his first few months in office??? what a joke!), and failure to recognize the consequences of their actions. Their behaviors remind me of self-centered, spoiled-rotten, tantrum-throwing teenagers! Sad thing is that they're NEVER going to grow up and still want... no, EXPECT... to be treated like responsible adults but still take the car without permission, drink and break laws, crash it and come home and want to know why we don't want them driving OUR car anymore!

      callow: lacking adult sophistication.

Hmmm. How about "I gave up golf to support the troops. Now, watch this drive!" shwock! I think that was much less sophisticated, even by Bush standards.

If America gets hit again, it's on him. All of it.

So, you're saying that you won't be an American, if we get hit again. Because that's what we all were on 9-12. All the other differences between us dropped away, and we united briefly, finding common cause together in our sorrow at what had been done. You're saying you'd rather root for failure than help work towards success, even in the 'war on terror'? How... patriotic of you.

It's sick that you would rather root for their side than for the whole country, as though you were the only 'real' Americans.

        So on point, Cat.

It still amazes me, though I don't know why, how since his election, heck, since his candidacy, the loony fringe has been willing to throw logic, reason and cold hard facts under the bus to bash Obama. Bush was the face of America abroad - our dancing, smiling, hot-doggin' Idiot-In-Chief for 8 miserable, embarrassing years and yet there are still those who would forget that period when those "Don't Blame Me, I Voted For Gore" shirts where a must for all Americans going abroad.

Wonders, and mass delusions of the right, will never cease.

WTF does it matter if he doesn't wear a tie!!! Conservatives are such dolts: what you say isn't important unless you wear a tie and wingtips???

Also, let's make sure we think about the image of the tie-wearing president who spent more time at his ranch in Texas and used more vacation days than ANY president in history! Do Republicans remember it took him SIX days to come out after the shoe-bomb incident?... or did you (conveniently)forget that?
What kind of image does it portray when the guy tries to pull a scene in Independence Day and puts on a flight suit, rides in a fighter jet and makes a statement like "Mission Accomplished"? Remember "Bring it on!"???
Do you really think it serves this country to keep us fearful so you can launch premptive attacks on every country that doesn't embrace the US as the greatest thing since the creation of dirt????
        Irresponsible. Immature. Terroristic.

Detroit guy tries but fails to explode a bomb on an airplane
Three days later 0 finally comes in from golfing and vacationing and says something about an "alleged" criminal act. The Chief in charge doesn't even come off the ski slopes for the entire Detroit affair. DHS girl says the "system worked".

The guy does not inspire confidence in himself or his "team". Brennen thinks the panty bomber will divulge all he knows through plea bargaining. You couldn't write fiction like this.

We are in very serious straits and the people in Washington, don't know what they are doing. "The system worked" administration is trailing smoke and I hope that all that happens. We all must pray that no Islamic murderers succeed. We need God's help because Washington and the WH is out to lunch.

"Three days later 0 finally comes in from golfing"
egb: remember that good ole Dubya waited SIX days??? AND he had to be prompted by a question from a reporter????

We also "saw/heard" little because the idiot in the WH counted on secrecy to (1) make us believe they were effective in shutting down the terrorist attacks, and (2) to keep us in fear, under their control, and willing to give up all kinds of Constitutional rights so that they could do whatever they wanted! Of course, they believed they were above the law.

AND, we had a Commander-in-Chief who'd skirted his military duty (MORE THAN ONCE) and during the Katrina disaster congratulated a lackey on the government response! Oh yeah, that guy was so totally "right" for his job too... I think he'd been head of some kind of horsey organization????

Wonder how much of some of these "terrorist events" are the work/collaboration of Karl Rove, the highest appointed anti-social, criminal in the government... he makes the Watergate "criminals" look like kids in comparison! Let's compare outing a CIA agent (uh, isn't that like a traitor?) with stealing the oppositions files during an electoral campaign? If it seems comparable to you, you need to re-examine your ethics and definition of "patriotism". Oh, yeah... that was a Republican administration, too, wasn't it??? (don't even go to the Monica Lewinsky thing. Noone died when Clinton lied!)

        Let us pray...

Right. 3 uninvited guests at a State Dinner, and something that happend in June, 2008, when Bush was still President? Obama, please cancel your vacation!!!! President Bush never took a vacation, and that's why there were NO terror attacks (on domestic soil, after 9/11, that succeeded, and not counting anthrax and the beltway sniper) during his term!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!

OOPS, and also not counting the El Al airport counter attack in LA, and the UNC SUV attack in 2006.

But besides those, Bush DID NOT ALLOW A SINGLE ATTACK (besides those I mentioned) IN THE UNITED STATES AFTER 9/11/2001

How's that for FACTS!!! IN ALL CAPS WHICH MAKES THEM MORE TRUE!!!!!!!1!!!11!

Given the number of images of Shrub in jeans and work jacket at his ranch in Texas... regardless of the particular "crisis" about which he was commenting... I think Godwin is simply riding the conservative hobby horse yet again.

And let's remember that unlike Shrub, Obama actually admits to administration shortcomings.

Well, make up your mind. You either get it or you don't.

One, EVERYTHING was a terrorist attack. They were trying to sell an illegal war which they had pre-planned.

Two, It was only mailed to a specific person, not at all a terrorist attack, but an opportunity to kill someone for some reason.

But you guys are missing it because you are playing defense in a controlled opposition game instead of actually following through with your mantra that Media Matters.
