Factually challenged news channel hires factually challenged Palin

January 11, 2010 2:46 pm ET — 146 Comments

The New York Times reported that Fox News has hired Sarah Palin as a contributor who "will appear on the network's programming on a regular basis as part of a multi-year deal" and "will host an occasional series that will run on the network from time to time."  Fox News hired Palin despite her months of pushing false claims and bogus information, including the "Lie of the Year" that the Democrats' health care bill includes "death panels."

Palin reportedly hired as Fox News contributor

From a January 11 New York Times report:

Former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska has signed on as a contributor to the Fox News Channel.

The network confirmed that Ms. Palin will appear on the network's programming on a regular basis as part of a multi-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ms. Palin will not have her own regular program, one person familiar with the deal said, though she will host an occasional series that will run on the network from time to time. This person would not elaborate, but the network does have a precedent for such a series. Oliver L. North is the host of an occasionally running documentary series on the military called "War Stories."

Many suspected that when Ms. Palin retired as the governor of Alaska last summer she was doing so to pursue some sort of career in television. The Fox News deal, however, would not seem to be all encompassing, and would appear to give her room for other pursuits, as well.

In past months, Palin has frequently misled public on variety of issues

"Death panel."  In a Facebook post, Palin claimed that under Democratic health care reform, "Obama's 'death panel' " would "decide" whether her parents or her son Trig, who has Down syndrome, were "worthy of health care."  Palin's assertion was based on the widely debunked claim that the House health care reform bill would require end-of-life counseling.  Numerous Fox News personalities subsequently advanced Palin's false claim.  PolitiFact.com named Palin's death panels claim its "Lie of the Year."  During the health care debate, Palin also falsely linked the Independent Medicare Advisory Board created by the Senate health care reform bill and nonbinding mammogram guidelines to death panels.

Palin's memoir goes rogue on facts.  Media Matters for America has documented numerous falsehoods in Palin's memoir, Going Rogue: An American LifeFor instance:

Media Matters previously documented numerous falsehoods Palin made during the 2008 campaign as Sen. John McCain's vice presidential candidate, including the false claim that as Alaska governor she said "thanks, but no thanks" to the bridge to nowhere and the falsehood that a New York Times article supported the assertion that Obama was "palling around" with terrorists.

Palin misleads on climate change.  Palin wrote a December 9 Washington Post op-ed calling on President Obama to boycott the Copenhagen conference.  Palin's op-ed advanced several debunked claims about what recently stolen emails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia "reveal" about the scientific consensus on man-made climate change, including the claims that climate scientists "manipulated data to 'hide the decline' in global temperatures, and tried to silence their critics by preventing them from publishing in peer-reviewed journals." Palin also claimed that "we can't say with assurance that man's activities cause weather changes."

Obama's birth certificate.  As Salon's Alex Koppelman detailed, Palin appeared on a conservative radio program and was asked if she would "make [Obama's] birth certificate an issue" should she run for president. Palin replied that "the public, rightfully, is still making it an issue," and that "it's a fair question" to wonder whether the president was born in the United States. She went on to denounce, once again, the "weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about, that Trig isn't my real son," but then counseled that "maybe we should reverse that and use the same type of thinking on [Obama]."  Birthers subsequently used Palin's remarks to promote and legitimize their campaign that Obama was not born in the United States.

Having Palin on Fox News has always been a good fit for both her and Fox. Neither have an interest in, or reputation for, honesty or accuracy. And both have profited from exploiting controversy and sex.

Yeah, but she's so good looking. And us conservatives really care about nothing other than that. But, since right-wing radio and TV seems to be the only shows still on the air, we don't have too many choices on what to watch or listen to. It seems all the liberal shows keep getting cancelled or go bankrupt. Ahhh, the life of the liberal, if they can't succeed on their own, have the government force private companies to supply for them.

It pains me to point out that Ms. Palin was a journalism major in college and once worked as a TV sportscaster...so I wonder if FOX will have the audacity of trying to portray this twit as a journalist.

Is Palin going to work for the news or opinion side of FOX?

Au contraire, I think a few of these wingnuts have very conflicted crushes on Olberman. It's the same ones who call pointing out lies and BS by the right "obsession" or "nitpicking" that constantly bring up KO out of the blue, to babble about irrelevant things like ratings or Olberman's young girlfriend. It's funny, but sad.

I've asked PC many times what he's proud of, but I don't think he's ever come up with an answer.

He's committed to a proven failure ideologically, he's been posting here for years with an almost perfect failure record as far as thinking and debating, his jokes are such failures that they make his logic look successful... yet, there's still that "proud" in the screen name.

It must just be that wingnut tendency to believe if something is repeated endlessly, no matter how ridiculous, it becomes true.

He must be doing something to be proud of, otherwise, he couldn't possibly be.... ProudConservative !

So...you see Sarah Palin as FOX's answer to Keith Olbermann?

But I thought Sarah Palin was supposed to represent more than that to conservatives. Palin was once the GOP nominee for VP. And, of course, she was the governor of Alaska briefly...before she quit. So, her role is slinging barbs at progressives?

She's going to have to do a few things ... like know who our senators are and know them by name (something she was unable to do as a vice presidential nominee) if she wants to compete with Olbermann. It still amazes me that she could never learn Joe Bidens name. Or that there is a North AND South Korea.

Right on, I'm not a "liberal," and I find this woman repulsive. She is the No. 1 reason that I didn't vote for John McCain. She is incompetent, she is hateful, she EXPLOITED her children, and she is dangerous. Having an (R) behind her name does not make her a conservative or even a palatable human being. She certainly stinks as a mother. Any mother who would trot her pregnant teenager out in public in order to assuage the rumors about the parentage of her youngest child is not a good mother at all.

Besides that, the woman truly believes that she is one of the chosen. Do some research on Latter Rain, Global Harvest Ministries, C. Peter Wagner, New Apostolic Reformation, Mary Glazier and Windwalkers. These are all groups that Palin is involved with and they are NUTS.

And, like a typical liberal, he ends up on the lower tier sport network because he doesn't have the talent to be upper tier. Next to Palin, O'Reilly and Hannity, with their nonsensical rantings, will take a 2nd role. Palin, although doing the same anti-Obama/anti-liberal/anti-green schtick, will instead do it in her softer, mommy-like, "little ol me" style. Always with a smile, and possibly even with her kids to carry the message (whatever Ailes needs to max out the ratings).

To compensate, O'Reilly and Hannity will have to become even more angry and more accusatorial. That is all they now how to do, and the pressure will really be on.

All this will be great for Fox's evening ratings, but have little affect on elections. (And, just wait until Ailes starts suggesting what Palin wears on the air - the sparks will really fly.)

Beck will just continue being Beck. He's in his own world, that no one else ever enters.

Seriously, he's right. If she gets on, then everyone will watch her show, if not for the new gospel, but to criticize her, as this site dutifully does. But we only add to the ratings and take them away from deserving media outlets. It gives the impression that the stage with the biggest idiot/rodeo clown/crazy person gets the most attention. I think that's bad

I hate what they say so I don't watch. I find her simultaneously frightening and disgusting...kind of like a translucent grey and red ooze with partially digested bones in it slithering across a garage floor toward me. The good news is, I have an out! I can just open the back door, and leave (i.e. not watch their crap.)

What in the world has Palin done to earn the right to be a contributor? Did she not quit her government job?
I know it doesn't matter to Fox News, however.
Sarah (death panel)Palin has proven one thing; she can repeat Republicans talking points and she dislike Obama and the Democratic Party. That is qualification enough.

Factually challenged, intellectually challenged and morally challenged. She'll fit right in with Rove, "Hannutty," Beck, the Cheney's and other of Faux's cabal of GOP operatives and liars. Palin hasn't, can't, and doesn't have the intellectual capacity or qualifications to "comment" on anything. She can distort the truth, shoot moose, quit on her constituents as governor, nod and wink to good ol' boys, and that's about it. Good... she belongs there. She can make her fans and followers even stupider. Typical desperate attempt by that far-right partisan, Ailes, to get like-minded Conservatives to come over and spew more lies to their naive audience.

In fact, I wonder if she will be involved in "debates" on Fox with other liberals. The possibility of that is highly unlikely, and we'll see how much royalty she gets treated with. We all know they don't want to damage her image by putting her in a tough crossfire situation where she gets schooled intellectually, just like the McCain campaign did.

What ……..no more hiding behind Facebook??

LOL………… She won’t last because she doesn’t have the mental capacity or dedication to keep a job that requires “real work”

She makes Glen Beck look like an absolute genius.

We’ll get to see just how many times she falls on the “quit makin’ things up ” sword.

In order to keep current, Media Matters will have to start another blog devoted just to her.

How long will it take for folks to go after Palin’s advertising sponsors the way they are doing with Becks?

Can you see the Palin gold commercials in your head yet?……I can.

      Remember this?:

      Syndicating Sarah Palin

While you might assume Palin would be a better fit for conservative radio than the less partisan world of syndicated broadcast TV, my sources say the country’s biggest radio conglomerate, Clear Channel, has already passed on her.

The main objection to Palin as radio talk-show host is that she would have to hold forth for three hours a day.

While some of her recent remarks may indicate a talent for improvisation, anyone who’s listened to Rush Limbaugh or Thom Hartmann or Don Imus or Howard Stern or even Ryan Seacrest knows it’s the rare personality who can blab extemporaneously for 15 hours a week.

And relying on callers to get you through won’t help, because as we’ve all experienced, callers-in are usually more embarrassing than compelling.

Inside Radio also gleefully points out the irony of these rumors, since Palin’s disdain for the media is clear. As she admonished reporters in her departure speech: “Quit making things up.”

For Fox to be a 'factually-challenged new channel,' they'd first have to be a news channel.

The word 'News' in the name of the enterprise really throws some people - even smart people, who typically say things like "Fox needs to get their facts straight" or "Fox is a really bad news channel."

It. Is. Not. A. News. Channel.

Fox is a bad news channel like a cow pie is a bad taco.

Sarah Palin is a red herring - a distraction - set up up by the conservative Republicans. She has no credibility as a candidate and they know it.

The Republicans will nominate someone, in either 2012 (depending in Obama's popularity), or 2016 that has a real shot at taking the Executive. The wingnut media will then yell and scream about poor Sarah being used, misunderstood, and underestimated. They will then support the Republican candidate. I am sure it is fine with Sarah. She will get publicity, a fine salary, and she won't have to work very hard.

This is all about getting the Republicans back in the White House, and the two Houses of Congress.

      Suggested name for her show

The QOTUS Show, starring Ex-Governor Sarah "Death" Palin..

When the most visible Quitter gets a show on Fox, it shows the true patriotism of Fox News.

Off to Fox Nation to throw the QOTUS thing around. Drives them nutzier

Wow, this gets announced the same day Steve Schmidt (McCain's campaign manager) has been on the news letting everyone know Sarah Palin still thinks Sadam Hussein was behind 9/11 even after all the debate prep they gave her. Oh yeah, she's just right for Fox!

Would this be the same Fox News that is making more money than MSNBC,CNN,CBS, NBC, and ABC combined? Nobody is listening to the left. They have been 'Left Behind.'
      And good riddance to them.

        Um, no.

For 2009, News Corp (parent company to Fox News) lost US$ 3.378 billion. That is, instead of a profit, their net income was NEGATIVE US $3,378,000,000. Total revenue was only US$30.423 billion.

Meanwhile, CNN's parent company Time Warner had a total gross revenue of US$46.98 billion with a net income of US$13.40 billion.

If you've go numbers that show how much each network made for their parent company, then post it, and cite your source, or STFU. I pulled mine off Yahoo Finance.

          Sarge,
You just confused him with facts.

The current form of conservatism is dead until they get back to a grounding in reality instead of fantasy.

My question for conservatives is this. If God ordained Bush 43 to be president, then didn't he ordain Obama as well? And if he did and you voted for McCain/Palin, then aren't you working against God's plan. And if so, then aren't you working for Satan? Just saying.....

Sarge, you have been busted down to a PFC..trying to use facts and common sense with a certified ConJob/Tea bagger only scares them away. And you know the edin9669 will never respond until the next time she/he thinks no one is watching and state that Fox is the highest rated News Channel forgetting about the "not cable" channels.
But how can anyone blaming the suckers who only watch and believe Fox News/Opinions shows. It is much easier to hate when you think you are superior. Boy have I got NEWS for them.

You know, Prince O' Dub, after posting here for years, and seeing the Ratings Queens have the stupidity of their bleatings pointed out hundreds of times, I occasionally worry that they'll catch on at some point, and stop showing up in their floppy shoes and big red noses to entertain us.

Then I remind myself that they're completely invincible to facts. They'll accept the wild claims of Bill O'Reilly over the documented facts of any reputable organization. We're in no danger of losing out lovable little monkeys and their adorable performances.

There's that joke about the Lottery being a tax on people who are bad at math, and I think it explains why so many of the most avid Lotto players I know are Republicans. It's not just that they don't get objective disciplines like math, it's that they have a powerful aversion to the factual.

A fraction of 1% of sheeplike Americans watch Fox "news" religiously, and believe it's news. The other 99+% of us watch other channels if we watch tv news, or get our info from other sources-- intertoobs, dead trees, etc.

Somehow, the wingnut mind, destroyed and re-molded by years of Fox "news", can be convinced that this means that 99+% of America is being made irrelevant by that little group of unthinking zombies who prefer to have their news and politics pre-chewed and placed directly into their gullets by the kindly trainers at Fox.

And you're right - no amount of facts and logic will affect them.

Don't worry, she'll call a news conference half-way through her "multi-year deal" to announce that she's quiting her job at Fox Noise to run for Village Idiot of New York.

I like being able to answer these tough questions without the filter, even, of the mainstream media kind of telling viewers what they’ve just heard.

      -Sarah Palin

So much for receiving tough questions, eh, Sarah? We know she wont get that at Fox... but she has all the filter that she wants.

I just read this entire thread and all of its hateful, mean, nasty, rude comments about a highly successful person. How do you people look at yourselves in the mirror without seeing how childish you are? You sound like a bunch of schoolgirls jealous of someone who is more popular than you are. Grow up!

She brings it on herself because she does not want to be held accountable for what she says and what she does. When did she have a real interview and answer questions about statements she makes and positions she takes!?Oprah,Barbara Walters,Fox news don't count..she calls everyone biased except Fox...really//how? why?? Please explain that Sarah? She doesn't want to go mainstream, she wants to stay in her comfort zone(teabaggers and Fox News) and pretend they speak for the whole country. She shows no ability to understand views/people different from herself. She shows no propensity for accepting let alone learning from mistakes and she is dishonest(Bridge to where?) about it..Nobody played gotcha with her!She is clueless about complicated matters of government, defense, history ,foreign policy..and well mostly everything. To be so shallow in knowledge yet so snarky, critical of others and vindictive is HER problem not those that see it and point it out.She just repeats one right wing talking point after another with no real depth or explanation.Do you think the McCain campaign people are lying on her..why would they? ..why should they?..Their credibility is bolstered everytime she makes another outrageously shallow statement showing her complete lack of knowledge. Why doesn't she put the critics to shame by dazzling them with her knowledge and insight...she could do the home work and change the perception if she's as smart as her supporters say she is...so far she's not interested in doing that!!!

Most Excellent. FOX already has better ratings ALL day than the three closest networks combined! That is with mostlt conservative and moderate leaning viewers. Now all the liberal people that are totally fascinated with every Palin detail will just have to watch too. I think MSNBC may have just lost it's last three viewers!

Eveyone should calm down and let Palin go and speak her mind on Fox News.Giving ex-Governor Palin a forum to speak her confused and frankly ill informed mind, only helps the Democratic cause.Hell we should be rooting her on to become the front runner in the GOP for 2012.Sarah Palin is a dim witted,6 different colleges in 6 years, self absorbed megalomaniac, who can only show how truly inadequate and over her head she is.
