Quick Fact: Fox, Wash Times bloggers in disbelief over Obama's "true" SOTU line that he "cut taxes"

January 27, 2010 10:26 pm ET — 4 Comments

In response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union assertion that "we cut taxes," live bloggers for FoxNews.com and WashingtonTimes.com reacted with incredulity. However, Obama did cut taxes for most Americans: the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 included $288 billion in tax relief.

Obama:  "we cut taxes"

From Obama's prepared remarks for the SOTU:

OBAMA:  Let me repeat: we cut taxes. We cut taxes for 95% of working families. We cut taxes for small businesses. We cut taxes for first-time homebuyers. We cut taxes for parents trying to care for their children. We cut taxes for 8 million Americans paying for college.

FoxNews.com's Roff and Cupp react with incredulity

During FoxNews.com's live blogging of President Obama's 2010 SOTU address, in reaction to Obama's tax cut remarks, Fox Forum columnist Peter Roff wrote, "We cut taxes? How did I miss that?" S.E. Cupp similarly wrote, "Cut taxes?!  WHAT?" From the live blog:

Washington Times' Kerry Picket:  "We cut taxes? Is he serious?"

In her WashingtonTimes.com live blog of the SOTU address, Washington Times editorial page online producer and opinion writer Kerry Picket wrote at 9:20 p.m. ET:  "We cut taxes? Is he serious?"

FACT:  The $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act included $288 billion in tax relief

As Media Matters for America has noted, the recovery act contained $288 billion in tax relief, including the Making Work Pay tax credit, a two-year annual credit of $400 per individual or $800 for families. In addition, the recovery act included a temporary increase in the earned income tax credit, a temporary increase in the refundable portion of the child tax credit, an increase in the first-time homebuyer tax credit, and tax incentives for businesses.

I watched the SOTU on hulu and it was broadcast through Fox News. It was great because one of their correspondents said that Obama doesn't know what Americans really care about such as how we treat terror suspects. I can't remember where I saw it but Fox News is the only network to say terrorists are the number one issue going into 2010. While every other network said it was economy or (like Obama said tonight) jobs. Now I'm watching the Republican response and it's laughable. I love that Obama came out with everything he's done. Stating it as fact and there's not skirting that. So what is it Republicans and Republican mouthpieces? Is Obama a lame duck that's done nothing or his he a radicle that's transforming the country into a socialist, communist, quagmire?

This was slight of foot just like saying taxes weren't raised and attempting to impose cap and trade and when that doesn't work, impose fines through the EPA. The population will pay the fines as they are passed on which is the same as a tax. The government did not reduce spending to pay for these tax credits which means that it did not cut taxes, it just delayed them. We or our children will pay for the tax cuts directly or through inflation from the additional money created and borrowed to cover them. This was not a tax cut.

Major Garrett started at CNN. Perhaps he retains a bit of journalistic integrity--unlike Bill Hemmer, however.
