Media conservatives call Obama "arrogant" in assessing State of the Union address

January 27, 2010 10:58 pm ET — 20 Comments

In comments before and during President Obama's first State of the Union address, several media conservatives have accused him of being arrogant. Fox Business Networks' John Stossel said that he wanted Obama to apologize for being arrogant during his speech and John Hood stated on National Review's The Corner blog that Obama's "cadence and rhythm" "come across as flippant and arrogant."

Media conservatives agree before and during SOTU: Obama is "arrogant"

Stossel wanted to hear Obama say, "Gee, I'm so sorry. I was arrogant." After Fox Business Network's Neil Cavuto asked, "What do you want to hear out of the president tonight?" Stossel stated, "Well, I'd like him to say, 'Gee, I'm so sorry. I was arrogant. We were arrogant. We thought we could reshape the world -- my vision -- so we wasted lots of your money." [Fox Business Network, 1/27/10]

John Hood on NRO: "[T]he cadence and rhythm his speaking voice" "come across as flippant and arrogant." In a blog post at National Review Online's The Corner that posted during the address, Hood wrote, "Ugh. We're only a couple of minutes into the president's address, and the cadence and rhythm of his speaking voice is already grating. They come across as flippant and arrogant. Hasn't anyone ever told him that?"

Stein: "We'll see Obama with his fake modesty and his fake humility." Discussing his expectations of the State of the Union address on Fox Business Network, Ben Stein stated, "Well, we'll see a lot of promises, and we'll see Obama with his fake modesty and his fake humility and his fake fighting aggressiveness. But he's just going to be his same politician. So, he's just a politician. I'd love it if he said, 'I'm not the messiah; I'm a politician. I don't know very much. I'm going to take a year off until I learn more. And I'm not going to interfere and screw up people's lives anymore.' "

Anyway, for Stossel to have any credibility, he needs to tell the facts at least once in awhile. His distortions are legion and therefor he has no credibility whatsoever. Sooooo, Mr Stossel, who cares what you say? Not me that is for sure!

It is humiliating to me to hear a bunch of Republicans who are constantly trying to bad mouth President Obama but it all just appears to be based on nothing but plain old racial animosity. It just drives some Republicans nuts that this uppity guy won and won so big in his campaign for the Presidency. If you talk to many in my party, you will hear all these coded words disparaging Obama's color. One person even referred to him as being "Uppity". So ignore their criticism of Obama. It is mostly just pure racism. Still I am staying in the party because I plan to outlast them all and then help pick up the pieces of a totally shattered party.

The conservative definition of "arrogant" = anyone who uses facts to debunk conservative myths and expresses himself/herself with confidence.

Conservatives are never, ever arrogant! Just common men like Rush, Hannity, and O'Reilly! Doesn't everyone make millions in a year?

you know what i noticed about his speech, not one single reference to the founding fathers and what they believed on how to fix things. I could be wrong, maybe i missed it but i didnt hear it. This country has been the most powerful and richest country in history because of their beliefs. I know the founding fathers means nothing to progressives but for most americans they do and believe thats what we need to follow to make this country great again. Small government, low taxes, states rights and leave us the hell alone. That is why he is arrogant to me, cause i believe he thinks hes better than our founding fathers.

What I would like to see from conservatives here, and in all comment sections, is real solutions, real arguments, instead of regurgitated talking points. Anyone can simply say "What he said". Why bother? How and what you are really thinking on your own is very interesting. Talking points? Not so much. Your complaint about no mention of the founding fathers last night is just whacky. What do you think of the policy proposals? Do you support the deficit reduction committee? Do you support a fee or tax on the banks that took TARP money? Or pushing the returned TARP money to local banks for lending to small business? What do you think of the descritionary spending freeze? What do you think of persuing nuclear energy in this country and opening off shore drilling leases? Were there any policy issues you heard that are of interest to you? Or just that he didn't mention this or that? Because if you are just looking for something to find wrong, what's the point of even following this stuff?

Don't forget that those on the right want to subvert states' rights by allowing insurance companies licensed in one state to sell their bare-bones insurance in any other state. That disallows individual states to set insurance minimums for policies sold in their own states. And this is their idea of healthcare reform.

Were you around when the founding fathers did their thing? Even if somehow you've managed to use a time machine or had a secrety cryogenics lab, how the heck are you able to read the founding fathers' minds?

I do believe in the principals of the founding fathers - they built a great base for this country. But that doesn't mean their work was done - we as a country still need to strive to improve, and build upon our success.

BTW, it's the "State of the Union" which implies current status, not a history lesson.

Actually, the founding fathers set up a government that can be changed. That's the beauty. They would be amazed that their ideas are still around at all today. Even they changed their original legislation. Look up the word amendment and see what it means. It may shock you.

Right wing translation: Small Government = Sell all the proven business models to your cronies that were developed for years by the government and hire mercenaries that fall under no direct oversight.

Protect States Rights = Only when the right wing is not in power. Other wise use the SCOTUS to overrule and interfere with state elections and medical end of life issues etc.

Lower Taxes: For the rich. Borrow the rest from foreign governments so you don't have to pay as you go or raise taxes.

Leave us alone = Already well covered by Paradox
