Palin's tea party speech full of false and misleading national security claims

February 07, 2010 4:34 pm ET — 111 Comments

During her address before the National Tea Party Convention, Fox News contributor Sarah Palin made numerous false and misleading claims about national security and foreign policy, including suggesting that the Obama administration doesn't use the word "war," that interrogators didn't ask alleged Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab about his training and future al Qaeda plots, and that Abdulmutallab has not provided information since he "lawyered up and invoked our U.S. constitutional right to remain silent."

CLAIM: Abdulmutallab "lawyered up and invoked our U.S. constitutional right to remain silent"

From Palin's February 7 National Tea Party Convention speech:

PALIN: What followed was equally disturbing after he was captured. He was questioned for only 50 minutes. We have a choice in how to do this. The choice was only question him for 50 minutes and then read his Miranda rights. The administration says then there are no downsides or upsides to treating terrorists like civilian criminal defendants. But a lot of us would beg to differ. For example, there are questions we would have liked this foreign terrorist to answer before he lawyered up and invoked our U.S. constitutional right to remain silent. [CNN Transcripts, 2/6/10]

REALITY: Administration source reportedly says Abdulmutallab currently "cooperating," officials say he provided intelligence after being Mirandized. Responding to Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman Sen. Diane Feinstein in a February 2 hearing (accessed via the Nexis database), FBI Director Robert Mueller agreed that "Abdulmutallab has provided valuable information" and that "the interrogation continues despite the fact that he has been Mirandized." Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair testified in the same hearing: "There are decisions that have to be made in which you balance the requirement for intelligence with the requirement for a prosecution and the sorts of pressure that you bring onto the people that you arrest in either form. It's got to be a decision made at the time. And I think the balance struck in the Mutallab was a very -- was an understandable balance. We got good intelligence, we're getting more."

Moreover, a February 2 Reuters article reported "a law enforcement official['s]" comment that "Abdulmutallab is talking and has been talking since last week providing useful, actionable and current intelligence that we've been actively following up on." The New York Times also reported:

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a jetliner bound for Detroit on Dec. 25, started talking to investigators after two of his family members arrived in the United States and helped earn his cooperation, a senior administration official said Tuesday evening.

Mr. Abdulmutallab, 23, began speaking to F.B.I. agents last week in Detroit and has not stopped, two government officials said. The officials declined to disclose what information was obtained from him, but said it was aiding in the investigation of the attempted terrorist attack.

"With the family, the F.B.I. approached the suspect," the senior administration official said, speaking to reporters at the White House on the condition of anonymity because of the pending legal case. "He has been cooperating for days." [New York Times, 2/2/10]

CLAIM: Abdulmutallab not interrogated about training and future plots

From Palin's February 7 National Tea Party Convention speech:

PALIN: There are questions that we would have liked answered before he lawyered up, like where exactly were you trained and by whom. You are bragging about all these other terrorists just like you, who are they? When and where will they try to strike next? [CNN Transcripts, 2/6/10]

REALITY: Interrogators reportedly sought and received such information from Abdulmutallab. Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 20, FBI Director Robert Mueller testified that interrogators interviewed Abdulmutallab "to gain intelligence, intelligence about whether there's another bomb, whether other coconspirators, where'd he get the bomb" (accessed via Nexis). Also, Newsweek's Michael Isikoff reported on his blog:

While at the hospital, he was interrogated for "about an hour" by veteran FBI agents with the bureau's Joint Terrorist Task Force in Detroit. During that hour, one official said, the agents learned a wealth of information from Abdulmutallab about his connections to Al Qaeda; who he met with in Yemen; where he got the bomb that was sewn into his underwear; and "who trained him in Yemen." Added another official: "We got a lot of leads."

The Associated Press similarly reported: "Shortly after 3:30 p.m., FBI agents began interviewing the suspect in his hospital room, joined by a CBP officer and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. The suspect spoke openly, said one official, talking in detail about what he'd done and the planning that went into the attack. Other counterterrorism officials speaking on condition of anonymity said it was during this questioning that he admitted he had been trained and instructed in the plot by al-Qaida operatives in Yemen."

CLAIM: Obama administration uses "words like 'overseas contingency operation' instead of the word 'war' "

From Palin's February 7 National Tea Party Convention speech:

PALIN: Let me say, too, it's not politicizing our security to discuss our concerns because Americans deserve to know the truth about the threats that we face and what the administration is or isn't doing about them. So let's talk about them. New terms used like "overseas contingency operation" instead of the word "war." That reflects a world view that is out of touch with the enemy that we face. We can't spin our way out of this threat. It is one thing to call a pay raise a job created or saved. It is quite another to call the devastation that a homicide bomber can inflict a "manmade disaster." I just say, come on, Washington, if no where else, national security, that is one place where you've got to call it like it is. [CNN Transcripts, 2/6/10]

REALITY: Obama has repeatedly used the word "war." President Obama used the word "war" at least seven times during his January 27 State of the Union speech. Moreover, following Obama's January 7 remarks on the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a Northwest Airlines flight -- remarks during which Obama stated, "We are at war. We are at war with al Qaeda" -- numerous conservative media figures falsely suggested that prior to that speech, Obama had not characterized the fight against terrorists as a war. In fact, in his inaugural address, Obama stated that "[o]ur nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred," and he has repeatedly discussed terrorism as the rationale for U.S. military action abroad.

CLAIM: "Our president spent a year reaching out to hostile regimes, writing personal letters to dangerous dictators"

From Palin's February 7 National Tea Party Convention speech:

PALIN: It's that same kind of misguided thinking that is seen throughout the administration's foreign policy decisions. Our president spent a year reaching out to hostile regimes, writing personal letters to dangerous dictators and apologizing for America, and what do we have to show for that? Here's what we have to show. North Korea tested nuclear weapons and longer-range ballistic missiles. [CNN Transcripts, 2/6/10]

REALITY: Bush, Clinton also wrote personal appeals to North Korean leader. A December 6, 2007, Associated Press article reported, "President Bush's personal letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, raising the possibility of normalized relations if he fully discloses his nuclear programs by year's end, is a turnabout for a president who has labeled the communist regime part of an 'axis of evil.' " AP further reported that the letter "reflected how U.S. policy toward the nation has shifted from the days when Bush shunned the dictator." Also, a May 27, 1999, Associated Press article reported, "North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Il, received a letter on Wednesday from President Clinton brought by a special envoy to the isolated Communist country, the official North Korean news agency reported. The envoy, William Perry, delivered the letter through Kim Yong Nam, head of North Korea's legislative Supreme People's Assembly, according to the Korean Central News Agency, which was monitored in Seoul."

Gee-whiz, Sarah Palin making false and misleading national security claims? What the **** does Sarah Palin know about our national security? Or anything else, for that matter. "Oh, I study all the reports...you know, all of them. Don't confuse me by asking which ones."

First, she never said she could see Russia from her house. She said it could be seen from Alaska. I'm not sure if that's true, but that's what she said.

Second, why are we talking about her? I don't know a single progressive, conservative, or independent who would vote for her.

MMFA's best strategy would be to just remain silent. Let the elephants put her on the ticket for 2012, then kick back the Lazy Boy and watch.

Drop it MMFA! You're just giving her ilk ammunition.

I hate to sound sexist here, but she's sort of like a reverse female Pinocchio: the bigger her lies grow, the shorter her skirts become. Palin knows she's got sex appeal and she's playing it very nicely, distracting the faithful with those sexy boots and cute, leggy outfits.

Don't mean to sound like a pig here, but it's something I've noticed.

            Yeah, you're wrong, as usual.

John Edwards had a massive personal failing. On everything else, he was pretty wonderful. He made a lot of money by working hard to make something of himself and by choosing a profession where he could help the little guy, hold businesses accountable, and make a ton of money for himself, all at the same time. He was a generous and thoughtful politician with many good ideas.

And because of his massive personal failing, John Edwards hasn't HAD a national voice, and I don't think he ever will again.

There's no comparison between Palin and Edwards. She's ignorant AND stupid. She's nakedly opportunistic to the detriment of her family and her constituents!

Please why does hurt so much to deal with the truth, excessive government never works! The more freedoms and choices by the people the better off the poor are, the highest social standardized are 100 correlated to the freest economies, why are we always talking about helping when the truth is it don't work, look into a East Germany, North Korea, and China and proven unworkable socialization, while West Germany, South Korea and Hong Kong (all started at the same time)had incredibly little issues for the poor. We had great and free society why are we trying to kill it.. The freest society provides the highest standard for the poor! Why is Obama promising to help the poor and disenfranchised and then doing more to in the run hurt them, it's very noble concept but it's really drive our county and absolutely the poor and into more trouble.

The problem that I have with Palin is the walk down memory lanes of our founding fathers. If she really wants to get back to the past- she would not have been running for the VP of anything but her home. Secondly, who is she to question our US security/and those we value in keeping us safe (her national security expertise is checking out Putin in Alaska's airspace), and what was John M. thinking? Move over, let our President do his job!!! Consider doing something constructive like finding common ground with women instead of being the token scapegoat your party.

Of course she's going to lie and distort facts just like they've been doing. It's nothing new, it's a given at this point.

What I don't understand is why Democrats sit by and allow this false image to be continually perpetuated. Republicans/conservatives have a strategy of repeated things over and over again, saying them louder and louder no matter whether they are true or not. Democrats have a strategy of rebutting once then moving on. That is why the perception of Dems being weak on fighting terrorism persists.

When conservatives lie like this, Democrats should be just as active, just as repetitive, just as loud in clearly pointing out the lies and showing the truth of the matter. Do not rebutt once then sit back and wait for the consertatives to make the next outlandish claim. Rebutt, expose the lie, rebutt, expose lie over and over again. Stop being defensive and play some offense.

      This chick is dangerous.

Apparently she's not only calling for antagonizing N.Korea, but in making all these BS claims about Abdulmutallab, she's putting the administration in a position where they're either forced to sit back and look weak, or release classified information to proove her wrong. Talk about putting party ahead of country! The only way for Obama to refute (or preemt) this nonsense would have been to release everything Abdulmutallab had told them right to the press... which would have immediately rendered the intel completely useless!

      This chick is dangerous.

I don't know if she falls into the category of evil or stupid, but I know where her FOLLOWING falls: Squarely in middle of teh stoopid.

Everytime I sit and listen to Sarah speak, I think - who in their right mind would even take this stupid woman seriously?? And then I remember - there's a growing number of people out there who buy into the big vapid catalog of crap she's peddling. Her speeches are nothing but campaign sound bites - from a woman who can't even commit to a job she camapigned for, and was elected to... this from a woman who knows less than I do about global affairs... this from a woman who only takes a stand when it's poltically beneficial for her (and will add to her FaceBook hits), and when she doesn't have to stand up to those idiots at Fox, or to foul-mouthed Rush. What's really sad is that there ARE people who think she's brilliant... and qualified to run this country. I can't even wrap my head around the thought of Sarah Palin participating in forgeign relation meetings, or international summits, or policy development seminars... UGH. She's been given too much (perceived) power... and the sad thing is, too many people are blind to the puppet strings that keep her operational. That woman is nothing short of a tool - in every sense of the word.

Sarah Palin is an example of the absolute worst kind of micro-management possible: irresponsible snarking by those with absolutely zero knowledge, training, or experience.

This woman, who reportedly had to hire a city administrator to actually do the job of running the town when she was mayor of Wasilla - now presumes to offer her sage advice on the correct procedures for handling terrorists.

Consider her use of the phrase "lawyered up." Allowing a suspect to talk to an attorney might, possibly, be a hindrance in a criminal case where the cops are relying on a confession.

But with the Christmas underpants bomber - that simply isn't the case. There were dozens of witnesses, plus the physical evidence - more than enough to pretty much guarantee a conviction. In this case "lawyering up" and allowing the suspect to talk to his family only INCREASES the chances that we'll get useful information.

A lawyer and his family are going to tell the guy that it is in his best interests to cooperate with investigators.

Sarah Palin ought to stick to catching fish and shooting animals. Leave the handling of terrorists to the professionals.

There is not a reputable source in the world that would share information with her; most probably because they would not have 10-12 hours to offer an explanation of the facts after presenting the information to her. It was very telling, that like the Tea Party itself, Palin's speech was nothing more than a childish tirade against the Obama administration, offering no policy, no solutions and no substance.

What does Sarah have on Barry? Hmm, honor, integrity, sincerity, patriotism, common sense, IQ, and most importantly WISDOM. Obama doesn't have an ounce of sense. I repeat he can not form a comprehensible thought sans TelePrompter. He needs a TelePrompter to address sixth graders.

EVERY President except one(and presidential nominee) has released his academic records - this is how we know President Bush had better grades and higher SATs than Jean Francois Kerry.

We know why Obama won't release his academic records - they will debunk the myth that he is intelligent. He is like the Wizard of Oz. He has an image of being big and powerful, but when you pull back the curtain or take away the TelePrompter, a tiny little man is revealed.

No doubt she didn't notice that Obama answered questions from 140 Republican congressmen for over an hour and mostly corrected their mistakes. GW Bush hardly held a press conference in 4 years because he couldn't answer questions from reporters. The same was true of Reagan. Both were unable to retain information on so many subjects. Obama is a genius. Sarah admits as much when she calls him a "law professor", as if someone charged with defending the constitution wouldn't be better off if he knew something about Constitutional Law.

Never underestimate the ability of a tiny fringe group of losers to ruin everything.
We live in America, and in America, if you don't immediately kill arrant nonsense, no matter how ridiculous, it can grow and thrive and eventually take over, like crab grass or reality shows about fat people.
      -Bill Maher

Bill hit it right on the nose. Clinton was impeached, John Kerry was publicly smeared, and to this day there are those who still believe our presidents place of birth hasn't been brought to light. Sarah Palin IS that arrant nonsense, reincarnated for the likes of every conservative hack this country has produced. The idea of paying it forward was meant to help the world, but when people breathe in Sarah Palins words, and exhale them for others, its like spreading carbon monoxide. Its invisible to those of us without the right tools to detect it, and the longer it leaks out the more harm it will do. I often find humor in the stories written about her, and many others..To me its as close as humorous politics can get, but If anyone thinks this transparent humor and nonsense will disappear on its own, I think they're in for a rude awakening in the next couple years
