Fox News, New York Post advance Trump's false claim that this is "coldest winter ever"

February 19, 2010 11:24 am ET — 46 Comments

Both Fox News and the New York Post advanced Donald Trump's false claim that this is the "coldest winter ever." In fact, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), global land and ocean surface temperature for December 2009 was the eighth warmest on record, and January was the fourth warmest on record.

Fox & Friends, New York Post advance Trump's false claim that this is the "coldest winter on record"

NY Post uncritically quoted Trump saying "the coldest winter ever recorded." On February 14, the New York Post reported that "Donald Trump is not a big believer in global warming" and quoted from Trump's speech in front of the Trump National Golf Club. From the New York Post:

Donald Trump is not a big believer in global warming. "With the coldest winter ever recorded, with snow setting record levels up and down the coast, the Nobel committee should take the Nobel Prize back from Al Gore," the tycoon told members of his Trump National Golf Club in Westchester in a recent speech. "Gore wants us to clean up our factories and plants in order to protect us from global warming, when China and other countries couldn't care less. It would make us totally noncompetitive in the manufacturing world, and China, Japan and India are laughing at America's stupidity." The crowd of 500 stood up and cheered.

On Fox & Friends, Trump again claimed "we're having the coldest winter ever." On the February 19 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy asked, "Hey, what global warming? Remember the weather outside? Well, Al Gore's prize theory called into question after the harshest winters on record." Trump claimed, "You have the Nobel Prize going to Al Gore; we're having the coldest winter ever." He also claimed that "New York is warm compared to Europe. I have friends over there. They say the coldest they've ever remembered." Doocy claimed that "people close to Al Gore and part of that movement say, 'Look, people are saying it's a cold winter; weather ... isn't the same as climate.' " Trump responded by saying, "Well, they always have an answer, and they always say, you know, then you -- then they get caught sending emails around talking about it as being a big con from the big scientists."

In fact, global temperatures so far this winter are some of the highest on record

NOAA: December 2009 was the eighth warmest on record. According to NOAA, "The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for December 2009 was 0.49°C (0.88°F) above the 20th century average of 12.2°C (54.0°F). This is the eighth warmest December on record." From NOAA:

NOAA: January 2010 was the fourth warmest on record. According to NOAA, "The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for January 2010 was 0.60°C (1.08°F) above the 20th century average of 12.0°C (53.6°F). This is the fourth warmest January on record." From NOAA:

Think Progress: "Following the hottest decade on record," we are in the "hottest winter" and "January was one of the hottest Januaries on record for the planet." In a February 16 post, Think Progress responded to Trump's National Golf Club speech by noting, in part, that "[f]ollowing the hottest decade on record, we are now in the hottest winter in the satellite record, and this past January was one of the hottest Januaries on record for the planet."

You know that there are many in positions of prominence that will not allow their opinions to be swayed by facts. Especially when those facts completely contradict what their opinion is.

Now, I am not convinced that global warming is entirely human caused. I am, however, convinced that it is happening, and I suspect that it is at the very least exacerbated by humans - and tragically in a way that is entirely solvable. As good stewards of our planet, we as a species need to work to mitigate and eventually eliminate our warming influence on the planet.

Oh, Donald Trump, you nut. If you knew anything about weather, you'd know that the colder it gets, the less likely there is to be snowfall. It does have to be just below freezing to snow, yes, otherwise the water would be rain and not snow. However, too cold and there is no precipitation. And the tiny bit you know about weather absolutely dwarfs your knowledge of climate, let alone climate change.

I should turn you in for cruelty to animals as well, considering that poor squirrel superglued to your head, but I'll let you off with a warning just this once.

HotAir.com eh? Well, neither the website, nor any of the people who were quoted or mentioned in the link you supplied seem to be weathermen, let alone climatologists. So, why would it matter what they think? If I did tell it to them, would they even understand it?

If the temperature is too high, say 40ºf, then there can't be snow. Likewise, air that is too cold, say 20ºf, means there also likely won't be any snow. Temperature and air pressure and humidity all have to be balanced just right for snow to occur.

Frankly, what amazes me most is the inability to understand that saying 'these events fit into the global warming scenario as we understand it' in not the same as saying they prove global warming.

In all of those clips, and I followed links to previous stories too, and not once did I see anyone claim that these weather events PROVED global warming.

I'm bringing an unfinished conversation here, because the page it was on closed comments.

Look at all your highlighted Pielke quotes:

the IPCC Reports, the CCSP Report on surface and tropospheric temperature trends, and the U.S. National Assessment have overstated the role of the radiative effect of the anthropogenic increase of CO2 relative to the role of the diversity of other human climate forcing on global warming,

Global and regional climate models have not demonstrated skill at predicting climate change and variability on multi-decadal time scales.

Attempts to significantly influence regional and local-scale climate based on controlling CO2 emissions alone is an inadequate policy for this purpose.

The forecasts, therefore, do not provide any skill in quantifying the impact of different mitigation strategies on the actual climate response that would occur.

The first two, do not support the conclusion he drew. And go back and reread the whole section that you quoted. Pielke doesn't refute AGW - he consistently supports it. He disagrees with some of the details other scientists have put forth and he thinks too much emphasis is placed on CO2 to the exclusion of other anthropogenic causes. He also prefers the Ocean Heat Content as a measure of warming over land based models.

These scientific differences are normal and are a part of why science as a whole works so well. You posted some rants by Pielke trying to claim he was being shut out and then resigning when no one fawned over him, but oops, here he is publishing papers. Not shut out, just not working with other people with whom he obviously wasn't meshing with on a personal level if one missing e-mail could send him into conniptions.

I visited my brother last week. He was staring at a Fox boob talking about how this snowfall contradicts global warming. He is a scientist. A real one. As I approached, I heard his incredulous muttering: "but... precipitation comes from EVAPORATING WATER!... Precipitation comes from EVAPORATING WATER!... Precipitation comes from EVAPORATING WATER!"

Poor guy. Rational inquiry and Fox are like matter and anti-matter. I just hope I can distract him from the spectacle before his head explodes.

And to make your fancy charts you put your temperature sensors next to a trash burning barrel.

Please don't feed this troll. This photo has been debunked, and it's irrelevant to the topic being discussed anyway. When locations for weather monitoring stations have had things located near them that might affect the temperature readings, they adjust for those changes. And there's no burning going on next to this weather monitoring site - it's simply a secured storage location for this homemade burn barrel so someone doesn't steal it.

Your definition of debunked must mean ignored.

A storage barrel with a smoke stack, good one!

The temperature readings are minimum maximum. It can go maximum for one minute and that number is registered for the whole day.

The excuse that the readings can magically be adjusted is horse poop.

Wow, jose2. Your mind is so open that with one simple photograph, an entire century long accumulation of data showing man made global climate change can be thrown out the window. You truly have no ability to think for yourself, do you? One supposed temperature sensor next to what might be a burn barrel, and you're convinced. They didn't have to try very hard to fool you, did they? So, is your stock portfolio heavily invested in Exxon, or is it coal futures?

I really had no idea that most of the world's scientists were using this one instrument to gather all their data. Amazing how extremely incompetent the entire world's scientific community is.

...But seriously, if they were burning trash next to a data-gathering device, wouldn't it show a fluctuation of dozens of degrees? Wouldn't global weather data conclude that, I dunno, humanity has long since died due to extreme unworldly temperature?

Newly-added asphalt-paved surfaces near temperature recording stations can affect temperatures. You've seen heat rising from paved roads, right? That's the issue. If a measuring station wasn't previously near a paved surface, and then becomes near one, the 'owners' of that measuring station informs the proper people that the temps might be minorly affected by that newly paved tennis court dozens of feet away.

There are a couple of different classifications for how much a previously-existing temperature recording station might be affected by newly-added things, like parking lots or air conditioning units or buildings.

I know that you weren't asking a 'serious' question above.
