Meet Erick Erickson: CNN's newest political commentator

March 16, 2010 3:41 pm ET — 88 Comments

CNN announced that RedState.com editor Erick Erickson will join the channel as a political commentator, stating that he is "a perfect fit" for the new show John King, USA. Erickson's long history of incendiary, sexist, and racially charged statements includes asking when voters would "march down" and "beat" lawmakers "to a bloody pulp" and referring to former Supreme Court Justice David Souter as a "goat fucking child molester."

CNN: "Erickson joins the Best Political Team"

CNN calls Erickson "a perfect fit" who is "in touch with the very people" they want to reach. A March 16 post on CNN.com's Political Ticker blog on Erickson's hiring:

Prominent conservative commentator and RedState.com editor Erick Erickson will join CNN as a political contributor, appearing primarily on CNN's new show John King, USA¸ the network announced Tuesday.

Erickson, a self described "obsessive news junkie" who grew up in Dubai and rural Louisiana, will also provide perspective and commentary on other programs across the network.

"Joining CNN is like coming home, and being in Atlanta makes the decision right for me and my family," Erickson said in a statement.

Under Erickson's leadership, RedState.com has become the preeminent right of center community online. Prior to leading RedState.com, Erickson practiced law for six years and managed a number of political campaigns, and he currently serves as a member of the Macon, Georgia, city council. He studied political science and history and earned a bachelor's degree at Mercer University in Macon. Erickson also earned his law degree from Mercer's Walter F. George School of Law.

"Erick's a perfect fit for John King, USA, because not only is he an agenda-setter whose words are closely watched in Washington, but as a person who still lives in small-town America, Erick is in touch with the very people John hopes to reach," said Sam Feist, CNN political director and vice president of Washington-based programming. "With Erick's exceptional knowledge of politics, as well as his role as a conservative opinion leader, he will add an important voice to CNN's ideologically diverse group of political contributors." [CNN's Political Ticker, 3/16/10]

Erickson's history of violent incendiary, sexist, and racially charged commentary

Erickson defends Beck's statement that Obama is "racist" and lashes out at "Obama Brownshirts." At Red State, Erickson defended Glenn Beck's assertion that President Obama is a "racist." Erickson stated, "A while back, Glenn Beck called Barack Obama a 'racist.' Given all the terrorists, thugs, and racists Barack Obama has chosen as close personal friends (see e.g. Rev. Wright), it's not a stretch to say it." Erickson went on to call for a boycott of companies that have pulled out of Beck's show and are, according to Erickson, "kowtowing to Barack Obama's worshippers, brownshirts, goons, and thugs."

Erickson calls Michelle Obama a "marxist harpy wife." In a blog post headlined, "Is Obama Shagging Hookers Behind the Media's Back?" Erickson stated, "I assume not. I assume that Obama's marxist harpy wife would go Lorena Bobbit on him should he even think about it, but I ask the question to make one simple point: Barack Obama, like Elliott Spitzer, is a creation of the liberal media and, as a result, could be a serial killing transvestite and the media would turn a blind eye."

Erickson calls Souter a "goat fucking child molester." On his Twitter account, Erickson responded to Souter's retirement from the Supreme Court by stating, "The nation loses the only goat fucking child molester ever to serve on the Supreme Court."

Erickson suggested that the Clintons killed Vince Foster and that Dems would kill former Rep. Eric Massa. In a March 8 post to his Twitter account, Erickson discussed the controversy then surrounding former Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) and stated, "Wonder if the Dems will make Massa take a walk in Ft. Marcy Park." In response to a question, Erickson subsequently clarified that his statement was "a poor attempt at conspiracy humor" and told his followers to "See Vince Foster." Conservatives have advanced the conspiracy theory that the Clintons had Vince Foster murdered. Multiple official investigations that determined Foster committed suicide.

From Erickson's Twitter account:

ericksonmassa1

massaerickson2

Erickson: "At what point do the people ... march down to their state legislator's house, pull him outside, and beat him to a bloody pulp?" In a March 31, 2009, post on RedState.com discussing a Washington county's ban on certain kinds of dishwasher detergent, Erickson wrote: "At what point do the people tell the politicians to go to hell? At what point do they get off the couch, march down to their state legislator's house, pull him outside, and beat him to a bloody pulp for being an idiot?" Later in the post, Erickson added: "Were I in Washington State, I'd be cleaning my gun right about now waiting to protect my property from the coming riots or the government apparatchiks coming to enforce nonsensical legislation."

Erickson: Purpose of Bachmann rally is "to tell Nancy Pelosi and the Congress to send Obama to a death panel." In a post on RedState.com, Erickson wrote: "Today, thousands will pour into Washington to tell Nancy Pelosi and the Congress to send Obama to a death panel (that's section 1233 of the original legislation). If you need details on where to go in D.C. or if you can't go, but want to show up at your Congresscritter's local office, go here." Erickson later "[c]larifi[ed]" that "Americans are sending Obamacare," not Obama, "to a death panel"

Erickson on Obama's Nobel Peace Prize: "I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota." In a RedState post discussing Obama's Nobel Peace Prize, Erickson wrote, "I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota for it, but that is the only thing I can think of for this news. There is no way Barack Obama earned it in the nominations period."

Erickson declares the "profoundly sick and immoral" Jennings "a proponent of statutory rape" and "a zealous advocate of NAMBLA." In an anti-gay rant posted on RedState, Erickson wrote: "Kevin Jennings is a profoundly sick and immoral human being -- a proponent of statutory rape, an opponent of the Boy Scouts of America, and a zealous advocate of NAMBLA." He added that Jennings is "not just a gay man, but a man who believes in the full gay rights agenda, where men and boys can have sexual relationships free of prudish moral people frowning" and called Jennings "a man who encourages predatory relationships between young boys and grown men."

Erickson: Kennedy wanted to be a "martyr for the cause." During the January 19 edition of CNN's Campbell Brown, Erickson discussed Scott Brown's election as Massachusetts senator and stated that "the irony here, though, is that Obama's unicorn of hope and changes is dying under Ted Kennedy, that, if Ted Kennedy had decided to resign or retire when he found out just how bad his health was, instead of wanting to be a martyr for the cause, the Democrats wouldn't be in this position."

Erickson makes repeated attacks on feminists. On his Twitter account, Erickson has made numerous sexist statements. After an anti-abortion ad during this year's Super Bowl, Erickson wrote, "that's it?!?! That's what the feminazis were enraged over? Seriously?!? Wow. That's what being too ugly to get a date does to your brain"; and "Thus ends the credibility of all pro-abortion groups. Thanks Mrs. Tebow for that. Ugly feminists return to their kitchens." The next day, Erickson wrote, "Turned on twitter today and there was a barrage of angry feminists upset with me telling them to get in the kitchen and learn to cook"; "Good thing I didn't suggest the feminists ... you know ... shave. They'd be at my house trying a post-birth abortion on me"; and "Feminists have no sense of humor, but clearly God did in creating feminists."

Erickson: "Dorgan and Dodd are healthcare suicide bombers." In a Twitter post, Erickson stated: "[Sens. Byron] Dorgan and [Chris] Dodd are healthcare suicide bombers. Instead of 72 virgins, they'll get ambassadorships."

Erickson: "It is and has always been the left" that resorts to violence. In a March 7, 2009, Red State post, Erickson wrote: "It is not conservatives burning down homes in Washington State with the ELF. It is not conservatives throwing blood on women wearing fur. It is not conservatives burning down the Texas Governor's Mansion during riots. It is not conservatives rioting during G-8 summits. It is and has always been the left. Deal with it."

Apparently the Crap News Network wants to get even crappier by hiring this jewel and don't be surprised if he ends up as Mormonster Beck's belated replacement.

I particularly liked the bit when he called Justice Souter a "goat effin' child molester." That alone should cause CNN to really think hard before signing this loon to a contract, but clearly they are headed into pit with Fox.

But, but, but that is the part of America that John King wants to reach in his program. You know, small-town America where "real Americans" live.

I read that segment and thought the guy must have been reading off of Sarah Palin's palm.

okay, so msnbc has podcasts of Keith and Rachel posted on their website. Without commercials. So that's an hour and a half of commentary each day without going near your tv. Also you can see John Stewart and Stephen Colbert on their websites. Get over it. Bye, bye Glenn Beck!

You're on the internet, right? I get my news aggregated from lots of different good sources by truthout.org, who also has original reportage. That'll cure you of watching the news from the TV. And you won't have to unlearn any misinformation/disinformation or be subject to propaganda and infotainment. That's if you want real news, of course. I could be assuming alot.

I think you assumed that this was a serious problem that I had, when I was actually trying to make a point about the general population and how Fox's numbers are inflated. The above is a reality for some and they are comfortable with that. That wont change, miracles aside (maybe Im a pessimist).

Are you frakin' serious? You have to watch either Fox or CNN because you have basic cable?!?!? How about READING for your news needs?!?!? Good lord, it's not like we have any kind of globally spanning mesh of some type that allows us to access information from all sorts of different countries and people, right?

Turn OFF your television for the 'news' and start reading. The reliance on television for news needs is part of the reason that loonballs like Becky have so much sway now. If people would just bloody read news from other nations and publications, then Beck and his buddies would simply be laughed off the air, or more likely sued off the air for the slanderous trash they throw around.

Nope, not serious. Easy there dkylep, that was more of a point on the inflated numbers of Fox news viewers. I guess I wasn't very clear as nobody seemed to understand what I was saying. You see a lot of people wont read the news and they need another way to pickup information. Sometimes the computer just wont do. Its much simpler and part of most peoples routines to turn on the TV and watch Fox until your quoting Beck and turning others into Beckers. This is the reason why they have so much sway, but its also an inevitability. Don't worry, Im with you on your sentiment and I wish more people would make an effort to become well informed and analyze information for themselves.

Just a few minutes ago, I linked the ThinkProgress story and declared I'm through with CNN. Of all the benefactors of "wingnut welfare," I didn't think CNN would be one, past questionable hires notwithstanding, but for them to put in writing that Erick was hired for "extensive political knowledge" just betrays that last bit of credibility I was willing to grant them. And contrary to the supposed ideals of conservatism, Erick was simply not hired on the basis of merit.

I agree and that is why I don't completely understand this move. I think that CNN would perhaps improve its rating by returning to its roots, so to speak, by becoming a news organization once again. Forget the punditry and crap. That is being done for both sides of the aisle by FOX and MSNBC. CNN in Europe is so much better than it is here. You actually here about what is going on in the world, rather than just what is happening in Washington DC.

That's what it looks like. CNN must figure that rightwing nutjobs sell on cable. So instead they choose to to slop around the mud and bat around talk radio type hyperbole instead of actually engaging in informed, reasoned adult debate.

Maybe this Erickson dude will amp it down for CNN, but what the hell does he offer anyway except reflexive partisanship where it's always about the game and scoring a shot or two.

I agree.. It is NOT illegal to be a Nazi or a Communist or a Liberal or an Anarchist or a Dick (as in Cheney since they now mean the same thing)
You can be a F'wad, as I am sure you may be.. But you will not go unchallenged in your ideas, and the darkness in the "Rights" hearts will lose, always.. in time..

MMFA does NOT censor, it brings the darkness to the light.. is it to bright for you? Dick.

Would Erickson get away with calling another an 'f'wad'?

          Exposing and combating free speech?

His Cursing is NOT the issue.. It is the intent in his heart..
I could care less of the words he uses.. its the ideas.. the words are nothing more then tools..
As far as calling you a F'wad.. well I call them as I see them..

As for my MMFA Family.. I apologize for my cursing..
But I am getting so sick of fools and trolls.. Cheers.

Freedom of speech includes freedom to express questionable opinions
Exactly. MMFA has the freedom to post this article, and you're questioning them. Freedom of speech does not mean everyone gets a tv talk show.

reading the comments on there is enlightening. Looks like CNN will be losing more viewers.
About 95 percent were disgusted with Erickson being hired by
      CNN.
Interesting to see so many moderates and independents upset over the choice. And how much they are sick to death of rightwing spin and the networks catering to them.

After King's interview with Dick Cheney, CNN rapidly started going far right.....Erikson is a perfect fit with the over the top right leaning King AND his wife Dana Bash.

Then of course there's Campbell Brown, who's husband worked for the Bush administration and is currently considering running for the senate as a...........republican of course.

Look out FOX there's a new sheriff in town called CNN.......maybe they'll take back Glen Beck too.

i'm sorry it took the hiring of erickson for media matters to respond to cnn's abrupt right turn. cnn has been running fluff stories on the tea partiers for the past year. cnn has ignored the hateful, racist, and violent signs you see at these tea parties. in doing that, cnn is endorsing racism and calls for a violence toward president obama. cnn is just as bad as fox.

CNN is a distant memory in our household. It used to be a staple. Haven't seen much of it in years. Their desperate attempt to rebrand themselves isn't going to change that any time soon.

If anyone expects that John King will challenge this guy, don't hold your breath.

This hateful insanity may be about to burn itself out...or not. But I don't think just allowing this kind of thing to wear itself out is nearly good enough. It needs to be renounced and defeated by the American public or it will be back again and again.

What will it take for journalists with a modicum of self-respect to start calling this stuff out?

"history of violent incendiary, sexist, and racially charged commentary"

Was this article supposed to be about Keith Olbermann? That description describes him perfectly.

Notice the subtle difference--MMFA backed up their contention, you did not.

You lose, but that's not news.

Yes, you still lose, unless you're going to provide a successful defense for Erickson (forgotten the topic, have you?). What you've belatedly provided is small potatoes next his Erickson's invective.

I didn't post that to defend Erik Erickson. I was pointng out yet another instance of MMFA's double standards. Olbermann does the same stuff that MMFA attacks Erickson for, yet he is happily employed at MSNBC without a peep from MMFA.
