Right-wing writers make outrageous claim Obama is instigating or "incentiviz[ing]" an "intifada" against Israel

March 18, 2010 4:56 pm ET — 71 Comments

Right-wing bloggers and columnists have recently accused President Obama of instigating an "intifada" against Israel through his administration's criticism of Israel's announced plan to expand housing in a section of East Jerusalem or by purportedly "incentiviz[ing] Palestinian Arabs to violent uprising."

Columnist, bloggers invoke "Obama Intifada"

Shapiro: "This is the Obama Intifada." Ben Shapiro wrote in his March 17 syndicated column that "When President Obama is unhappy about his inability to convince Americans to nationalize health care, he incentivizes Palestinian Arabs to violent uprising" and that the Obama administration's response to Israel's announcement "was far too well-rehearsed for it to have been triggered by something equivalent to a Housing and Urban Development dispute in the United States." Shapiro added:

This is the Obama Intifada. It is he who has suggested that the Palestinian Arabs have legitimate grievances, that Israel is the victimizer, and that the United States will stand aside and allow violent atrocities by Arabs to go forward without comment. He wants this Intifada, and he's got it.

The Obama Intifada will serve a dual purpose: it will knock health care off the front pages, and it will provide a "crisis" for Obama to solve. If a few Jews get killed, Obama doesn't truly care. What's a few eggs if you're frying up a socialized health care omelet? What's a few Jews if you can win another Nobel Peace Prize?

Nothing, to President Obama. All that matters is his personal victory, even if America and her allies lose.

Geller issues "Call to End Obama's Intifada." In a March 16 Atlas Shrugs post headlined "Action Alert: Call to End Obama's Intifada," Pamela Geller urged her readers to "Join Christians United for Israel in their surge against the President's intifada against Israel," and quoted their statement that "the Obama Administration has reacted to this announcement by creating the worst crisis in relations with Israel in decades. First Vice President Biden condemned the announcement in unusually harsh terms. Then, over the weekend, Secretary of State Clinton and advisor David Axelrod escalated the rhetoric still further. Today, Middle East envoy George Mitchell indefinitely postponed his trip to the region. Where will it end?"

Jawa Report headline: "The Obama Intifada." A March 16 Jawa Report blog post, headlined "The Obama Intifada," included numerous links to stories and blog posts about the controversy, adding, "This too shall pass, by which I mean the current US administration." The post was a reposting of a March 15 post on the Internet Haganah blog carrying a similar "Obama Intifada" headline.

"Obama Intifada" meme first embraced by right-wingers in 2008

2008 report made right-wing rounds. Jihad Watch and NewsBusters were among the conservative blogs that highlighted a November 3, 2008, article in an Arabic newspaper by Abdelbari Atwan, the first journalist to have met with Osama bin Laden. According to Robert Spencer's translation of the French-language blog post he cited at Jihad Watch, Atwan's article carried the headline "The Historic Intifada of Obama" and claimed that with Obama's election, "the Americans thus give the kickoff of their historic Intifada against racism." In highlighting the Atwan's article, NewsBusters' Warner Todd Huston wrote: "A president Obama is no friend to Israel or the west, at least as far as Abdelbari Atwan and many of his comrades are concerned. The most pressing question that Americans have is: should we support a man for President of the United States that our enemies imagine to be on their side?"

Israel has the same problem we have, only about ten-fold: Fear mongering causes apathy and poor voter turn out among the Israeli left, allowing the wingnuts to hijack all policy decisions.

So from my understanding, you lived in Israel. You are a lefty. Because not many people agree with your political views, they must be fear-mongering wingnuts.

At least now I know how the left rationalizes their existance.

Hmm. You take leaps and bounds when you should be crawling. I don't remember saying half of that. My statement was an oversimplification, yes, but I didn't say anything that is not true.

Are you denying that fear is used to shape policy? Because that would be ridiculous. And fear is used far more often to shape policy on the right than the left (that and Nationalism). I think anyone that would exploit the fear of the people for their own gains is a wingnut. I guess "wingnut" is an opinionated term, you probably think quite highly of these people. I call them wingnuts, you call them what you want.

What exactly are you disputing? That they are wingnuts? That they fear monger? That voter turnout is falling? That much of the Israeli left has become apathetic and many feel that peace is unobtainable?

I think you are merely saying "I don't agree with you" in so many words. You would have been better off saying "keep to your opinions" right off that bat, as obviously that's what it came down to.

It is undeniable that whenever Barry criticizes Israel it encourages the terrorists. I personally believe he is doing it personally because he is anti-Semetic.

I realize that Israel is our ally and I'm all for that. But when did the expectation that when Israel says "Jump" the answer from the US must always be "How high?" Whatever happened to being able to criticize what you think is a wrong decision made by your friends without it being misconstrued as a deliberate attack against them?

Also, isn't it very hypocritical for Pam Geller, a woman known to support white power groups, to be harping about anti-Israeli sentiments?

There is nothing for which we should criticize Israel because Israel has done nothing wrong. They have the right to build wherever they damn well please.

I am mildly disappointed in Bibi. If Barry doesn't like the fact that he built 1,600 units the response is to build an additional 1,600. It is disgraceful that he would apologize to an anti-Semite like B Hussein Obama. Perhaps it is time for Avigdor Lieberman to challenge Bibi for Likud leadership. I adore Bibi, but I fear he may be going soft.

Hey Bobby J. Fan, what I don't understand is that in this country, we don't (anymore) build houses for this religion/ethnicity or that religion/ethnicity. When you say they can build whatever they damn well please you dodge the issue. Are these housing units also available for Arabs?

Does whatever they damn well pleaseinclude taking land that does not belong to you and snubbing your allies in the process. Funny how taking land and discrimination in housing is something that you seem ok with. I wonder if you miss the old days here in the USA when such actions were official policy?

Also, you seem to overlook the fact that the timing of these moves was not exactly friendly to the United States and our interests. Of course, your hysterical knee jerk hatred for our president makes me think you would be more than willing to jump sides to a foreign power to score political points.

I can't believe those 412 dead Palestinian children from last year's war in Gaza could commit such attacks. 9/11 was obviously cause by Palestinian children who hijacked planes and flew them into the towers. Much less terrorism for the sake of millions of dead Israelis due to the blockades and wars caused by the Palestinian children.

Hamas started the war. Those deaths are on Hamas - not Israel. Israel went out of its way to avoid civilians, but Hamas used them as human shields. Hamas is 100% culpable in their deaths - Israel has clean hands.

Except that Israel is not wilfulling killing civilians. They are going out of their way (at risk to the lives of their soldiers) to avoid killing civilians. If Hamas is intent on using civilians as human shields then regrettably they become a military target within the context of the Geneva Conventions.

In this scenario their death is down on Hamas - not Israel.

Ummm, how about you actually read the report? It states that Israel used Palestinians as human sheilds as well.

Not to mention this, which is the complete opposite of your claim that Israel went out of their way to avoid killing civillians...

It also finds that the direct targeting and arbitrary killing of Palestinian civilians is a violation of the right to life.

The Goldstone report is a hit job by a group of anti-Semites. The UN General Assembly is one of the most viciously anti-Semitic instututions in the world. Of course they will find Israel culpable.

If I were apppointed to investigate the Obama administration, do you think I would declare that there is rampant corrution? Of course I did, but any report I issue would be meaningless because I have an intense bias against BHO.

The same is true of the Goldstone report - it is not worth the paper on which it is printed.

I will say again Hamas is 100% culpable and Israel has clean hands.

                          What about Gilad Shalit?

I happen to be Jewish, and I find your statements regarding both the U.N.'s and President Obama's supposed anti-semitism ludicrous and insulting. You do understand there is a difference between the Jewish people and the state of Israel, right?

Because someone does not give blanket support to Israel does not reflect in any way on somebody's feelings about Judaism. They are two separate things. You do realize there is a difference between a religion and a state, don't you?

Oh, by the way, Israelis themselves refute your claims of President Obama's anti-semitism.

Haaretz poll: Most Israelis see Obama as fair and friendly

It is he who has suggested that the Palestinian Arabs have legitimate grievances

I was just going to say, is this supposed to imply that they don't?

The Palestinians have no legitimate grievances. If they want a homeland, let them have it in Jordan. Judea and Sammaria belong to the Jewish people and the Israelis have the right to build whenever and wherever they damn well please.

By your logic, I guess it would be ok for Mexico to see Texas and California as an extention of their traditional homeland.

Does any honest person doubt that the Palestinians have "legitimate grievances"?

YES! I do claim that the Palestinians have no legitimate grievances. The Palestinians do not have a historical, legal, or moral leg on which to stand. This is not a he says - she says dispute. Israel is 100% in the right.
