Right-wing media complain that Pelosi incited tea partiers with her "big gavel"

April 02, 2010 9:19 pm ET — 26 Comments

Right-wing media figures have criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for carrying a gavel while walking to the Capitol to vote on health care reform, claiming she sought to incite Tea Party members protesting the legislation. Glenn Beck said Pelosi was "inciting" the tea partiers and "slapping them across the face," and Rush Limbaugh said Pelosi tried to "provoke" tea partiers by "carrying that big gavel" with an "excrement-eating grin on her face."

Conservatives criticize Pelosi's "big hammer"/"big gavel"/"big mallet" and "excrement-eating grin"

Beck asks if Nancy Pelosi was "inciting" tea partiers with House gavel -- "a big hammer." On his Fox News show, Beck asked, "If [Pelosi] was really worried about violence and she thought these people were violent, why would you grab a big hammer and walk into a sea of these people?" He later asked, "Did anyone say to Nancy Pelosi, 'You're inciting these people. You're slapping them across the face'?" [Glenn Beck, 3/25/10]

Limbaugh: Pelosi tried to "provoke" tea partiers by "carrying that big gavel" with "excrement-eating grin on her face." On his April 2 radio show, Limbaugh stated that Democrats had "faked an incident" to make "false claims of racism at the tea party people." He further stated:

LIMBAUGH: They faked an incident. They faked -- they were trying to provoke an incident. There's no reason to walk above ground to get to the Capitol building from their offices. There's tunnels underneath with trains, subways, and so forth. They were purpose -- send the Congressional Black Caucus to walk over, send Pelosi over there with a big gavel trying to provoke an incident. When an incident didn't happen, they made it up.

Later in the show, Limbaugh discussed the issue with a caller:

LIMBAUGH: Those of you in the Tea Party who go to these rallies, I'm sure you're aware of the effort to besmirch you by accusing you of shouting the N-word at John Lewis.

CALLER: That was -- that did not happen.

LIMBAUGH: I know it didn't happen. There's no evidence it happened. If they had videotape evidence that it had happened, they would have shown it. They don't have it. They were trying to create it. They were being provocative. They were being contentious. There's no reason that that group of people from Congress had to walk through the crowd. They never go to the Capitol that way. They get there in the underground tunnels. They want -- and Pelosi carrying that big gavel with that, you know, excrement-eating grin on her face. They were trying to provoke everybody into an incident. And when it didn't happen, they said it did anyway. [Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show, 4/2/10]

Michael Graham: Pelosi was "asking for" response by carrying gavel. Appearing on Glenn Beck, radio host Michael Graham stated, "I think Nancy Pelosi marching through the protesters on the eve of the health care battle with that big mallet in her hand, she was asking for -- she was saying yet again, 'Just try -- don't even look at me. I'm in charge here. You people sit down and shut up.' " [Glenn Beck, 3/25/10].

Tea Party blogger: "It would have been more symbolic had she had a whip." On Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, Kevin Jackson of the blog TheBlackSphere.net, who was described by host Bill O'Reilly as a "Tea Party member," complained about the "symbology" of Pelosi's gavel:

O'REILLY: They say that they got assaulted verbally when they came into the Capitol for the health care vote. That really lit the fuse on this latest thing.

JACKSON: Well, it's interesting to me that -- the symbology of what happened, where you've got this very wealthy white lady leading a group of black, you know, men up to the thing with a gavel in her hand. It would have been more symbolic had she had a whip. [The O'Reilly Factor, 3/31/10]

Rush Limbaugh constantly pretends to know what goes on in the minds of all Democratic leaders...and his idiotic fans mistake that for brilliance. It's like believing a street corner magician really has supernatural powers. Limbaugh's "gift" of mind reading is laughable.

We all know perfectly well that these same blowhards would be criticizing those same Democrats if they had taken more hidden routes to the Capitol. "Look at those cowards, slinking away in the shadows, afraid to face the American people."

      Everybody knows that I'm right.

Obviously, we all agree that nobody can deny that you're right. And if she didn't have the gavel, it would show weakness in not properly arming herself.

As Irony noted ( and we've all noticed for years), the bulk of Rush's clown show, and most of the other right wing clown shows) is made up of Fat Boy and his callers ruthlessly savaging the imaginary statements of Democrats that Rush invents just before he and his dittoheads destroy these statements.

The same people complaining about the size of the gavel are the ones who said people coming armed to presidential appearances were no big deal.

Pelosi reminds me of my wife who gets all mouthy when I tell her not to wear skirts to work because they make her look sleazy. She's all, "My job has a dress code!" I'm like, "Your lips are moving but I can't hear you, now finish my laundry." She goes, "I bring home the money, I take care of the kids and by the way I'm a powerful member of the U.S. Congress." Then I had to open a can of you-know-what because she was provoking me. Chick doesn't know her place.

And Breitbart was inciting the supposed "Reid supporters" by walking through a crowd with a camera and getting in their face, huh??? It works both way...

Any I put "Reid Supporters" in quotations because considering the tactics from the right, I wouldn't put it past Breitbart to have some of his lackeys throw eggs at tea party buses and then claim they are Democrats...

And now this on Congressman Cleaver -

KANSAS CITY, MO- U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver voted in favor of the controversial health care reform bill, but talk isn't raging about how voted, but whether or not he was purposely spit on as he and other congressmen made their way to the U.S. Capitol building to cast their vote.

In video of the incident, a man is seen with his hands around his mouth and yelling at the Kansas City, Missouri, Democrat as he walked by. The footage shows Rep. Cleaver reacting to the man, and is seen a few seconds later wiping his face.

The video is not clear as to whether or not the man spit in Cleaver's face intentionally, or if it was a matter of "say it, don't spray it." Rep. Cleaver never commented on the incident, but it didn't take long before many people claimed that he was spit upon.

In an interview on Tuesday with FOX 4 News, Rep. Cleaver would not directly answer the question of whether or not he was intentionally spit upon.

"I haven't talked about this incident on TV or anywhere, and I've been approached to talk about it on every national TV show," said Rep. Cleaver in an interview with FOX 4 News. "I never, I never reported anything, never a single thing in Washington, not one thing. People assume I went somewhere, never done press conference, never done an interview on it and I'm not going to do it."

Go ahead keep painting the people that want limited government and contained/controlled spending as hate mongering racists. America knows and It makes the movement stronger.

You mean the people who DIDN'T march when the President who was actually guilty of uncontrolled, unnecessary deficit spending and gov't growth (Bush) was in office, but ARE marching against a black President who's NOT guilty of those things?

Bush really grew the gov't. In his first 6 years he never saw a spending bill he didn't like, for cripes sake! Obama saved us from a second Great Depression - that's a GOOD thing - it's GOOD to have deficit spending under those economic circumstances!

We're not painting them as anything. We're allowing their own actions to speak for them. If they come off as hate mongers, who's fault is that? BTW, your "movement" doesn't appear very strong if it could garner only 8,000 folks after Fox News did its best to rally the troops. I believe in government. I think the whole "limited government" thing is a crock that appeals to people who don't want to take any responsibility for living in this country. If you guys actually had to live in the country you purport to want, I don't think you'd be too happy with it.
