Despite claim that "context matters," Beck played heavily edited Sherrod clip on radio

July 21, 2010 3:36 pm ET — 7 Comments

On Fox, Glenn Beck said that because he didn't have the "full context" of the clip of Shirley Sherrod speaking to the NAACP, "this is something that I wouldn't air and demand a resignation on." However, earlier that day on his radio show, Beck played the clip and suggested it indicated that America has "transported into 1956 except it's the other way around."

Beck only discovered that "context matters" after his radio show

Beck on 5 p.m. Fox show: "Based on the facts that we have right now, this is something that I wouldn't air and demand a resignation on." On the July 20 edition of his Fox News show, Beck said:

BECK: Here's my take on Shirley Sherrod: I don't think Shirley should have been fired -- or, I'm sorry, forced to resign. Based on the facts that we have right now, this is something that I wouldn't air and demand a resignation on. No, I wouldn't. Why? You know when we did Van Jones and we had all those clips of Van Jones, do you know how many audio pieces we have that we could've run, but we couldn't get the full context of the speech? Context matters.

But on 9 a.m. radio show, Beck played heavily-edited clip and attacked Sherrod. On the July 20 edition of his radio show, Beck says that they "have video tape of a USDA administration official discriminating against white farmers." He then asked, "Have we suddenly transported into 1956 except it's the other way around? ... Does anybody else have a sense that there are some that just want revenge? Doesn't it feel that way?" After playing the audio of the tape, Beck said, "You tell me what part of the gospel is teaching that."

Sure feels that way. I bet Breitbart would man a fire hose if he had the opportunity...

A defendant in a lawsuit involving large sums of money was talking to his lawyer. "If I lose this case, I'll be ruined." "It's in the judge's hands now," said the lawyer. "Would it help if I sent the judge a box of cigars?" "Oh no! This judge is a stickler or ethical behavior. A stunt like that would prejudice him against you. He might even hold you in contempt of court. In fact, you shouldn't even smile at the judge." Within the course of time, the judge rendered a decision in favor of the defendant.. As the defendant left the courthouse, he said to his lawyer, "Thanks for the tip about the cigars. It worked!" "I'm sure we would have lost the case if you'd sent them." "But, I did send them." "What? You did?" said the lawyer, incredulously. "Yes. That's how we won the case." "I don't understand," said the lawyer. "It's easy. I sent the cigars to the judge, but enclosed the plaintiff's business card."

I am waiting for the day when Beck tells his audience that 1+1=3.

Media Matters will post on it and trolls will try to explain to us how unfair we are to criticize Beck.

True. Do the math! Add yourself to 1+1, and it's obvious that liberals have been distorting math for a very long time. The Founding Fathers all wrote, as documented by Beck U., that 3 minus 2 equals one, thus interpreted by Beck, therefore, 1+1=3

John Stewart has been able to figure out what Beck is about:

He must be referring to those who are still ticked off that we elected a black man president.

I think Shirley Sherrod should sue Glenn Beck and Fox news. He is a liar and a racist pig that just can't get over the fact the his right wing nuts lost the election. We finally have a President we can be proud of and they can't come up with any terrible skeletons so they continue to make up lies. This has made me so angry at the distortions and lies that the right wing media continues to pretend that this is news instead of propaganda. If more of the average Americans that are not far left or far right do not speak up this country is headed for disaster. I have never posted a comment before but this has made me so angry that they have no regard for the truth only politically motivated news distortions that I can no longer be a silent majority, not tea party or any other radical organization just an average American that is ashamed that our country is still so divided over race. That is the elephant in the room.
