When will Fox & Friends apologize for attacking Sherrod?

July 22, 2010 10:03 am ET — 55 Comments

After Andrew Breitbart posted a deceptively cropped video and smeared Shirley Sherrod as a racist, Fox & Friends followed suit, airing the video clip and claiming that Sherrod's remarks were "Exhibit A" of "what racism looks like." The full video of Sherrod's remarks has since shown that Breitbart's clip was incredibly unfair, yet Fox & Friends has not acknowledged its mistake or apologized for attacking Sherrod's character on national television.

Fox & Friends repeatedly attacked Sherrod as "racist"

Doocy: Sherrod "sure sounded racist," is "[e]xhibit A" of "what racism looks like." On the July 20 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy said that Sherrod made "a speech to the NAACP that sure sounded racist." Later, after guest-host Alisyn Camerota asserted that Sherrod's remarks were "outrageous, and perhaps everybody needs a refresher course on what racism looks like," Doocy responded that Sherrod's comments are "Exhibit A."

Camerota accused Sherrod of "touting this in this anecdote as though this is, you know, a feather in her cap, somehow, for her to be congratulated." Camerota added, "I mean, it is really a shocking admission," and went on to criticize the audience for not booing when she made this statement. She repeatedly described Sherrod's comments as "outrageous."

Kilmeade: "She was, like, bragging that she withheld ... all that she could do" to help the white farmer. Co-host Brian Kilmeade accused Sherrod of "bragging that she withheld ... all that she could do" to help the white farmer.

Ingraham on Fox & Friends attacked Sherrod as having a "racist sentiment." Later during the July 20 broadcast, Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham said of the video: "This emerges and pretty much confirming what many of us thought about people who've burrowed their way in the Obama administration with radical outlooks, a radical agenda, and in this case, a racist sentiment expressed clearly by her." Ingraham added: "[T]he question is how many more people like Ms. Sherrod exist in the Obama administration who aren't so stupid, as she was, to actually explicitly state her views on this question of race. It's really -- it's really shocking. And Andrew Breitbart, by the way, did a great piece on this whole thing, fantastic."

Ingraham, O'Reilly apologized for attacking Sherrod

O'Reilly: "I owe Ms. Sherrod an apology for not doing my homework." On the July 21 broadcast of The O'Reilly Factor, Bill O'Reilly apologized to Sherrod "for not doing my homework, for not putting her remarks into the proper context." Following a report on FoxNews.com, O'Reilly was the first person on Fox News' television programs to report on the misleading Sherrod videos. He called for her to "resign immediately."

Ingraham: "We shouldn't have even played it." On the July 21 broadcast of her radio show, Ingraham apologized for running with the Sherrod video, saying: "I should say that I came out there and slammed her really hard yesterday, and that we really shouldn't have gone with this, despite the fact that every major news organization went with it. We shouldn't have even played it."

By contrast, Fox & Friends has repeatedly whitewashed Fox News' role in hyping the tapes

Fox & Friends has not admitted error or apologized. On July 21, the day after Breitbart's narrative completely unraveled, Fox & Friends noted that the full speech shows that Sherrod had helped, not harmed, the "white farmer," and asked if USDA and the NAACP "rush[ed] to judgment." Kilmeade said the Obama administration "may have acted without knowing the whole story," and Fox & Friends repeatedly aired Breitbart's false claim that Sherrod's audience was "applauding as she described how she maltreated the white farmer."

On the July 22 broadcast, Doocy said that USDA should have "asked a couple of questions" before firing Sherrod, and co-host Juliet Huddy said the Obama administration "may have become a little sensitive when dealing with racial issues, perhaps." At no point on July 21 or July 22 did Fox & Friends admit to making an error by running with the deceptive video or apologize for smearing Sherrod.

Doocy falsely claimed that Fox News didn't report on Sherrod until after she resigned. On the July 21 edition of Fox & Friends, Doocy falsely claimed, "Fox News did not do the story until after she had already resigned," and guest co-host Dana Perino claimed that USDA had already asked her to resign "before this story was reported." On the July 22 broadcast, Doocy also claimed that "Fox News Channel did not touch this story until she had actually quit."

In fact, FoxNews.com reported on videos prior to her resignation. A July 19 FoxNews.com article reported on the video, noting that it was "first posted by BigGovernment.com," and reported that:

FoxNews.com is seeking a response from both the NAACP and the USDA. The clip adds to the firestorm of debate over the NAACP's decision to approve a resolution at its convention last week accusing some Tea Party activists of racism -- a charge Tea Party leaders deny.

A July 20 FoxNews.com article stated: "The Agriculture Department announced Monday, shortly after FoxNews.com published its initial report on the video, that Sherrod had resigned." A July 21 FoxNews.com article similarly reported: "FoxNews.com was among several media organizations that carried the story of the initial video released Monday. It remains unclear who edited and released the shorter video."

They will never apologize unless they are forced to by a court decision. Even then Fox and Chumps will never go there.

Probably never. Their all scumbags. They will start playing the victim at some point today. Or they will completely change the subject and try to make it about how wrong it was the she was forced to resign, of course pointing to how this is all Obama's fault. These people have no shame, and they WILL rot in hell if they keep on this track.

When criticizing somone else's grammer, it is helpful to use correct grammer yourself. Otherwise, you look as foolish as the person you are trying to slam. "Nice grammer pal" is not a complete sentance.

I suggest everyone watch Rachel Maddow from last night. She really did a great job covering this and theentire race baining game being played by the right. She spent probably the first 15 minutes of her show on this, then later spent time showing all of the Fox hypocrisy after the story fell apart.

        When will they apologize?

Maybe when the Duke lacrosse players get an apology from those who convicted them before anything was proven, including this website.

This is the defense folks. Well you guys do it too. Please recall all the conservative outrage over this Duke stuff. If there is some equivalence here, then where is the humility from Fox? No they keep on attacking.

I don't recall articles on this site continually attacking the Duke guys after the charges were dropped. This site monitors media anyway, not crime stories. The Duke charges, by the way, that did not come from some kind of liberal attack press but a prosecuting attorney. Its not the same.

Actually, the attacks came from those who convicted these guys long before there was anything remotely truthful, including this site. Rush, Sean et all called the "victim" a lying ho, and they're were links by this very website daily on it. She turned out to be one. No apology was ever extended to the players who were innocent.....from any outlet. MMFA kept the coverage coming daily before a shred of evidence was ever presented, and nothing afterwards.

First of all this site and others didn't convict the Duke Lacrosse players, the slammed people like "Rush, Sean et all" for calling the alleged victim a lying ho. We don't know to this day or not if they were innocent, they were and are presumed innocent because the case didn't even make it to court.

This site monitors conservative media. When I did a search for Duke Lacrosse here I got headlines on what conservative commentators said, not on what the Lacrosse players did. This is not the same as the current controversy. Media matters did not start a story about the Duke guys and then do everything they could to make the story go viral.

The DA's office dropped the charges, the prosecutor was jailed, the rape never happened, and your "was or wasn't raped" is nonsense. She wasn't. And this website never made a comment, apology, etc to any of the right wing media folks who were, well right. They were correct, MMFA was not. This site prides itself on commenting on right wing misinformation, and posted threads on this story daily. They were wrong in this case.

Nonsensical? The rape never happened. It was not BS like your post is. And while the investigation was ongoing, this website posted threads daily of right wing misinformation in regards to this case, as highlighted above, which turned out to be correct.

And I'm not demanding an apology. I just think its hypocritical of MMFA to demand an apology from someone when they did the exact same thing and haven't issued one.

Calling someone a "ho" while an investigation about her claiming she was raped is the B.S. and was the misinformation, numbnuts. You don't know if the rape never happened or not. The case was dropped because of the lac of evidence to convict.

As it has been pointed out to you MMFA never called the Duke Lacrosse team members rapists, so it is a false analogy.

Not really. The prosecutor works for the DA's office...he/she is only an employee. The DA is elected and his employees are not. While they do have jurisdiction to prosecute law, they do not act as an independent body of the DA's office. The guy in this case was doing stuff on his own behalf, thus the arrest.

MMFA was not wrong for calling out the crap that the wingnuts were calling her before the investigation was complete. Nifong was totally wrong because he saw this as a case that could make him famous and he wasn't investigating objectively and could have caused the case to be dropped.

In fact the wingnuts deserve an admonishment for rushing to conclusions and the horrible language used when referring to the woman. Their sexism shouldn't be excused.

Given everything I have investigated on this site so far for my dissertation (5 months of daily review) there is not much here that is based in fact. There is much speculation and even more spin and redirection. But not much if any facts.

I believe this site is basically an extremist snear campaign. I will be interested to trace the money and see who is behind it all and what motivation is there.

                  .....More Coming Sept 2012.

They owe Savage, Rush, etc one for being correct.

NO ONE and I do mean NO ONE should EVER apologize to either Savage or Limbo for their racists, homophobic, nasty, foul rants!

I'm puzzled why news organizations like CNN and ABC don't follow up on the source of this story. It seems to me an easy story to follow when Mr. Breadbasket (that's what spellchecker says I should use), is on the set of ABC and Mr. Stephanopolis could simply ask him instead of letting him blather on and on and not answer a question.
It reminds me of the time when I was a kid at the local K-Mart store when a man came in to get a replacement bulb for his movie projector. The man goes up to the counter and I'm standing next to him as he asks the fellow behind the counter if he has a replacement bulb like the one he is holding in his hand. The fellow behind the counter looks at the bulb and says he might but the man would have to bring in the bulb so he could look at it and check his inventory! DUH! He's looking at the bulb in the mans hand!
Anyway I hope 'reporters' like Stephanopolis get their act together and see what is in front of them.

Obama had nothing to do with this.

Boy, the trolls are out today. Are you guys being paid by the post? Where are you operating out of? The Heritage Foundation basement?

When will Fox & Friends apologize for attacking Sherrod?
Right after one of these events takes place:

They Have nothing to apologize for. There was a race baiting story planted to brightbart. The NAACP released a partial edited clip hoping to bait people into picking it up.

At least Glenn Beck stood up for her regardless of her extremist history which is contrary to his own beliefs.

BTW O'Reilly took responsibilty an did apologize for his lack of diligence on 7/21/2010.

Even so no one even reported on it until after she was forced to resign by the white house because they thought she was going to be on Glenn Beck. She resigned on the 19th and the story was covered on the 20th and not a word was mentioned before.

Something stinks here. An obvious attempted baiting.

In case people like you came up with your crap, Media matters made a timeline of the events. And even without it, Fox and Friends showed the video and commented on the "racism" in it.

here's the timeline: Which you will very likely ignore.

Also Glenn Beck didn't defend her. He called her a marxist and then started acting all "i've always been on her side".

She was forced to resign by the deadweights who believed Breitbart and co's dishonesty and demanded her firing.
