Right-wing conspiracy: Sherrod controversy "orchestrated" by the White House to "smear Breitbart"

July 22, 2010 4:34 pm ET — 95 Comments

As Andrew Breitbart's Shirley Sherrod smear dissolved, rather than blame Breitbart for posting the deceptive clip of her speech, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, and Rush Limbaugh ludicrously began speculating that he and the conservative media could have been the victim of a "set-up" that had been "orchestrated" by the White House.

Conservative media: Sherrod controversy a "set-up" to "smear Breitbart," Fox News

Beck: Did White House "plot" Sherrod story to "destroy the credibility of Fox News"? On the July 21 edition of his radio show, Beck linked the Sherrod story to "the President wanting to disgrace Fox News and separate everybody from Fox News." Beck asked, "is there a possibility that anybody involved is either going to use this emergency, or plotted this as a way to destroy the credibility of Fox News?" Beck went on to claim that in the future, when Fox runs a story the administration doesn't like, the White House can say that "they take things out of context all the time."  Beck asked, "Is that a possibility? That's the only one so far that seems to make real sense to me." On his radio show the next day, Beck further suggested that if the Sherrod incident "wasn't a set up -- I have to tell you -- it is certainly Rahm Emanuel's don't let a good crisis go to waste."

Beck: "Maybe I'm being too conspiratorial" but "was this a diversion?" Also on the July 21 edition of his radio show, Beck questioned whether the Sherrod story was a "diversion" created by the Obama administration. Beck asked, "Did they do something else with the other hand yesterday that we're not paying attention to?" From the broadcast:

BECK: Now maybe I'm being, in this case, maybe I'm being too conspiratorial. Maybe we're just dealing with keystone cops at the White House. Maybe it was that somebody just didn't have the context. But it doesn't make sense.

[...]

PAT GRAY (CO-HOST): Isn't it fascinating too how -- how long it took Van Jones? I mean, he's a communist. He's a revolutionary. He's--

BECK: That's why something's wrong.

GRAY: He's a radical.

BECK: Are we supposed -- Were they -- did they do something else with the other hand yesterday that we're not paying attention to? Was this a diversion?

GRAY: Maybe

BECK: Was - this doesn't make any sense. Was this just -- was this sloppy?

Savage: "I'm beginning to believe that this entire affair was orchestrated by the government itself to smear Breitbart." On the July 21 edition of his radio show, Michael Savage suggested that he was "beginning to believe that this entire affair was orchestrated by the government itself to smear Breitbart and the Tea Party movement." He continued by stating that the scandal "is part of the dirty tricks campaign that the Democrats are famous for" and suggested that the Democrats had "released these tapes -- these edited tapes -- of the black bureaucrat through a third party or a fourth party, whispering 'oh, do we have something for you Mr. Breitbart.' "

Limbaugh: "For all I know, the White House orchestrated this whole thing." On the July 22 edition of his radio show, Rush Limbaugh derided the narrative of the Sherrod story in the media. He suggested that "[n]ow the template is, do you deserve a phone call from the President? The White House wanted you fired. The White House didn't listen. The White House took it out of con -- The White House is afraid of Fox News." Limbaugh continued by claiming, "For all I know, the White House orchestrated this whole thing."

True, the "climategate" hoax was a good example of the right wing media BS, but that one was not so personal. They were trying to distort science, and an entire institution, this attack on Sherrod was much more personal.

Journolist isn't something i care for. Keep in mind though that what they were trying to counter act is Fox and others actually using Rebublican talking points that come directly from the RNC. This is a documented practice. A few left-wing journalists wanted to fight fire with fire. Maybe a bit misguided.

Still, looking at the names these were mostly people working as commentators or as reportes for "agenda" publications as opposed to MSM per se. A far cry from the emails and faxes sent out by the RNC to friendly camps in MSM.

No need whatsoever to trump up anything. No one could plot a more successful campaign of self destruction than the one Breitbart has managed for himself. He did this all on his own and he just keeps bleating more lies and more lies. I am waiting for some Responsible person in our party to call this racist out for his dishonesty. But sadly, I am still waiting. But nice try to attempt to pin this stupid viral video on the White House. Remember, Breitbart has admitted he sent it and even claims it was altered when he got it. It is also a fact that he never did due diligence to check with the lady to see if the story was true. Rant at the administration all you want, but it was our guy who sent out this disgustingly racist video. And if you criticize the White House for not checking, how much more culpable should we hold Breitbart. Plus this is his second shot at a trumped up video. He is a liar and totally unreliable news person. The White House is culpable only because they assumed that Breitbart had an ounce of integrity. And they were totally wrong on that account! They just screwed it up. But the screw up started with the lie Breitbart sent out. To blame only the White House is pure politics. This episode makes me ashamed of both the administration and my own party!

Look, there is no need to continue this fantasy that somehow a whole bunch of folks are the problem The problem is Breitbart who pushed out this phony film without checking OR who actively participated with this klutz who first made the cuts that made the movie a big fat lie! Breitbart does not have any credibility when it comes to film making or doctoring them so the film looks like his point of view. He is a proven liar and he should NEVER be believed. His excuse is that he got the tape like it is now. Frankly, my guess is that that is a lie right out of the bad place but say that is true (I know it stretches credulity} but even if his comment is correct, he slammed that junk out without even calling the subject of his hit job to get her side. His parading himself as just a newsman is a charade, He is a disgusting hit job and a proven racist besides. This is his second swipe at black people so we all need to remember this is the racist king when he blabs some stupidity again. Most of the time I doubt he will have the nerve, and then I give it some thought and then I am convinced he is just a compulsive racist. He WILL repeat this disgusting offense with a different scenario. I hope this lady cleans his financial clock and makes him a pauper for the rest of his life. Maybe then, he may experience some redemption after this disgusting racist behavior!

Actually nice try Breitbart, and Limbaugh and his side kick. Breitbart is the culprit in this incident. He put out that devastating doctored video without even an attempt to ask the woman for her side of the story. Then of course, everyone stampeded after viewing that viral lie Breitbard pushed out. I hold them responsible for not contaccting the woman but I keep in mind that the liar in chief is Breitbart. What a clumsy newsmasn to make a setup tape and then this doctored tape available. He is never to be trusted again. That is the bright side of this story. His racist wings have been clipped by noone but himself. He is a liar and a fraud. But I expect Hannity and Rush to just ignore Breitbarts two strikes and defend him no matter what a sleeze he is. Frankly I see no difference between the two sides. All these guys commenting now pushed out this crap before checking the story with the subject of the calculated smear. Now they have no credibility. The fact that Obama assumed he could rely on Brietbart's integrity is hysterically disgusting. Breitbart should never be trusted on anything.

      Breitbart is a liberal,

He purposely destroyed himself so that the conservative media and Fox would be devastated. It worked perfectly.

Drudge is now reporting that 6 months ago Breitbart registered Democrat and then just last month he registered Democratic / Socialist party. It doesn't appear he likes America very much.

Let me hit myself in the head with a 2 X 4 and assume for a moment that this was all cleverly orchestrated by the administration to smear Fox news. Well this begs the question of why Fox was so easily duped.

Is Fox news just like their audience, which wants desperately to believe that Obama is a white hating, Marxist, Muslim non citizen president? This unbalanced bias in their reporting made them vulnerable to this evil white house plot.

Why was Fox so quick to assume that there was a NAACP attack on white people that they failed to be fair and professional and check the story? The White House must have known that fox would not be professional or use journalistic standards when it comes to an attack on the White House.

Why did the administration fire the lady when they new the un doctored tape would have to come out and make them look bad for overreacting?

You see, if this was orchestrated by the White House, the White House would know it would work because:

          1. Fox is unfair and attacks whenever they think they can get away with it.

          2. Fox is unbalanced: It will go viral on any story that smears non-conservatives and the administration.

          3. Fox is unprofessional: It has given hours of air time to Conservative Media Celebrities who are uninterested in actually backing up what they say with evidence or even logic.

          4. Fox is just plain mean. Smearing people, calling them names, dismissing them, stereotyping them seems to be the standard.

Fox expects its audience to swallow it up. They expect their audience to be obedient and well trained. They want their audience to be riled up and they want to derail the political discourse in this country. If you watch and believe all this, know that fox has a low opinion of you. Maybe you are ok with that.

Umm you must have been in lala land when the Ag Department, not the White House, fired her after the Brietbart doctored tape appeared on Fox. Leave it to Fox to carry the water for this true racist. Remember, Breitbart produced the phony story that got Acorn defunded. He is a liar of the first order. His EXCUSE is that he got the tape and he had nothing to do with making the tape. He also had nothing to do with journalistic protocal to check with the person named by the slimeball who peddled this story. But alas, Faux journalist, Breitbart, got away with a doctored script either he doctored (could be) or that he recieved from some other racist source and then he failed to authenticate the tape with the subject of the tape, Stupid neglegence for a good reporter. Plus, a lousy, lousy mess for journalistic integrity. So sue the dirty guy, Ms. Sherrod! Clean his clock!!!!

You guys must live on Mars or La La Land. I heard the story long before the White House acted. Along with reports that EVERY major network had blasted the story out. It may well have been on several other networks too, but I defiantly heard it on Fox before Ms. Sherrod was fired. We can all complain about her firing (which was stupid given the source of the chronic liar's doctored information) but never the less, everyone would have pitched a fit if she had not been fired. The culprit in this story is not the White House although they went with a tale out of the mouth of this known racist, but the story was viral long before the White House acted. But nice try to make them it. Sounds like the second installment of the Breitbart tale. I‘m a Republican but I demand facts and all these blabberers just repeated lies ad nauseam. Now the whole crew on Fox are looking like stupids. But others on other networks did not look so great either. But Fox now has the facts but you notice it breaks their hearts to own up to their smears of this woman. And, they are obviously still making excuses for the Breitbart low ethics problems! Racism seems to be the only reason for their failure to abjectly apologize. Well probably a touch of anti Obama tirade also. It is just sickening to have fellow party members be such racists.

The conspiracy, to the extent that label can be used here, is one of utter incompetence. Any real journalist, someone in very short supply these days no matter what network is cited, would have run the story to ground before taking it to air. We tend not to do that these days. Today we are treated to ideological propagandists and incompentents masquerading as reporters and "expert" contributors, and columnists who will twist facts into pretzels to justify their view of the world. Anchors and hosts are too often little more than empty suit entertainers! Where is Edward R. Murrow when you need him?

I was wondering where idiots posting on other sites were getting this particular meme. I really should have figured it was coming from the unholy triad of Beck, Limbaugh and Savage, since it was too early for the prime-time Fox lineup.

Far out. A meme reference. And well considered too---a darn fine example of a 'tag-you're-it' culture datum--- an information byte that, by repetition and passing, rises to the level of a true fact!

Well, then, you aren't very well-educated.

First off, the clip asserts that this was something she did in the recent past, as an employee of the USDA. It wasn't, and she wasn't.

Secondly, although initially she didn't go all out for the white farmer because he was white, in other words, she discriminated against him because of his skin color, the rest of the tape clearly demonstrated that she learned pretty quickly that it was wrong of her to think that she should be a very strong advocate for black farmers who were poor and disadvantaged and she should only do enough to get by for a similar white farmer. That change of heart was not fully described in the snippet of video that Breitbart showed. In the ensuing 24 years, she's done lots of good for both black and white farmers, including this very same farmer, who luckily wasn't permanently disadvantaged after her initial less than energetic help.

Third, the tape doesn't show what Breitbart claimed it showed about the NAACP!

The tape was wholly deceptive. It was a snippet from a life-story.

Well, if you have trouble understanding the dastardly deed that Breitbart perpetrated, you would need to play the tapes side by side. I could follow along with the real tape if it were played and then I could see how Breitbart had lied. He claims he did not lie, he got the tape as it was. But alas, he pushed the tape as a slanderous comment on the administration, particularly the Ag Department . All the other skunks who pushed it even after the facts were exposed by the actual tape, well that is what is so despicable. Now Breitbart’s little two step to try to get out of his reckless unprofessional behavior is just sickening. He did not even call the lady in question to hear her side of the story. This lady may revolutionize the entire news business since this stupidity has shown that Breitbart is not to be trusted on any breaking story. As a journalist, his reputation is ruined. And this is his second fall too. Reference the video he made about the charity. I doubt he has a third strike coming!

If this had been a White House orchestrated sting on not-so-brightbart, don't you think that they would have handled their end of it better? Confronted the accusers or at least expressing skepticism before the full video came out? Instead, they look bad too, though only a small fraction as bad as the conservative clowns who hyped it.

I cannot imagine anyone with an IQ over 12 believing that the WH had anything to do with conceiving this plot to get the goods on Breitbart. It's flat out lunacy stuff. There would have to be so many dominoes falling into just the right places at exactly the right time for it to even appear they had a hand it any of this nonsense.

What does make sense is Breitbart trying to wipe a little egg off his face and his diehard defenders right there to help him clean up a bit.

They would do themselves a favor and just lay low until the press furor subsides, and get to work on the next deliciously tasty project that Fox can gorge their airwaves with to entice their viewers. After angry black panthers, scary Muslims and now this racist black woman, there must be more out there.

Well let's take a look and see what would have happened if she hadn't been fired. The Fox and Breitbart would have been livid and say stuff like, "See! He allows radicals, communists, pedophiles, socialists, and now racists to work for him". They would use her to try to connect the dots between the WH and the new black panthers. They begged for her resignation and now that they got it, it's all of a sudden Obama's and NAACP's fault that the entire thing happened.

What do these guys want? They criticize Obama for not doing one thing so he does it and then they criticize him for doing it. You can't win with these people.

This is one of the most disgusting episodes in the history of our party and I totally disown the echo chambers in Fox news, the Breitbarts of the world, Boehner et al. I stay in the party so I can rabble rouse at precinct meetings and identify how the far right racists have bulldozed their way into leadership of our party. Here is one Republican who is totally ashamed of the serial racists like Breitbart.

That whole "right wing conspiracy" thing didn't work out too well for Hillary Clinton when her husband was caught with his pants down.

The conservative policy of derailment in action. The 90's became a big circus, not because we had a womanizing president (nothing new there) but because conservative media and political operatives did all they could to make it the most important issues facing our nation.

Conservatives did all they could to make an insignificant land deal in Ark., a civil lawsuit and a dirty dress in the white house the most pressing issues of the day. Now a real adult political movement would focus on real issues but the media got played and all we talked about in the 90's was marginal personal issues, hyperfocusing on crumbs of Arkansas impropriety. Glass-Stengel getting repealed: Who cares when we can make political discourse look like the national enquirer.

Turn the page to today. Nothing has changed with these conservatives and their media celebrities. If they could get us to all talk about a dirty dress in todays White House they would in a minute.

you seem to be stuck on the need to rationalize the firing of Ms Sherrod by insisting that she somehow had done some wrong..when everyone..from the people she is supposed to have wronged..to the guy who fired her..have strongly and emphatically stated that she had not..the Spooners in particular.. immediately reached out when they first heard of this accusation the scum breitfart had published..if that is not enough for you to rethink your point of view..then i was wrong and ignorant about you..

Yes very interesting, especially coming from an Administration that Fox claims is shamelessly anti white. The way Fox has depicted the president, you would have thought they would have given her a medal for her anti- white racism.

Next we will have fox commentators speculating on the dramatic split within the administration between the New Panther Party faction and the Marxist faction within the administration over the firing of Mrs. Sherrod. The sad fact is that many of Fox's viewers would swallow that one also.

All I have to say is people like Hannity, O'reilly, Limbaugh & Beck plus the tea-party are all making this about race. This started with race doing the campaign when Palin and McCain was calling President Obama every name in the book except for the son of God, we all know what they really wanted to say which was the N-Word but they didn't say it. When President Obama won then the tea-party was formed pretending it's all about big government when it's not. I just don't understand why all the news are too scared to see it as it is and report it as it is. Who started all of the pitting whites against the blacks? The tea party, beck, hannity, limbaugh and o'reilly every little thing Obama does they make it about race. Blacks do not do that and you guys know and you know who's stirring up all this racial tension. It's ridiculous. The fact of the matter is that some whites can't stand to see a Black Man as President so they are slowly trying to create a white vs black as their playing card and they are doing well because no one wants to call them out on it no one but Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow.

They aren't even that liberal. Obama is a mainstream ivy league lawyer, editor of the law review and on target to be a very wealthy capitalist of the professional class. So. Now you know. Oh---and don't misspell the word 'socilist' anymore on T-shirts. OK?
