"The secret is God": Beck sees divine influence over his 8-28 rally

August 27, 2010 3:20 pm ET — 57 Comments

Glenn Beck has repeatedly promoted the idea that God is directly involved in his August 28 rally. He has predicted "a miracle" will occur at the event, said that attendees will "see the spirit of God unleashed," and claimed the rally will produce an "awakening."

8-28 attendees will "see the spirit of God unleashed"

At 8-28, "You're going to see the spirit of God unleashed." On the August 26 edition of his radio show, Beck told his audience, "You're going to see the spirit of God unleashed, unlike you have probably ever seen it before, at least at a public function. You are going to see the power of God."

Beck is "only writing a few bullet points" for speech in case "the spirit" wants to talk. On the August 25 edition of his radio show Beck said, "I am only writing a few bullet points" for his 8-28 speech "so that I don't get in the way of the spirit in case he wants to talk."

Favorable 8-28 weather forecast means "God is smiling". On the August 25 edition of his Fox News show, Beck said, "By the way the weather here in Washington is incredible. And it is supposed to be sunny, pleasant, low humidity. I mean, dare I say it? God is smiling."

"The secret" to 8-28 rally is "God". On the August 26 edition of his Fox News show, Beck said that he's talked about "Saturday's message" for "six months on one of the biggest cable news shows in history and the third largest radio show in America." He continued, "Just between us. Don't tell anyone in the media. The secret is God."

8-28 involves "divine providence"

"Divine providence" led to rally's scheduling on day of MLK speech. On the June 18 edition of his radio show Beck said, "It is the anniversary of the 'I have a dream' speech, from Martin Luther King. And, what an appropriate day. At first we picked that date and we didn't know, and I thought 'oh, geez.' But now, now I almost think it was divine providence."

"Ask [God] for his divine providence" and for "the finger of the Lord to appear." On the July 7 edition of his radio show Beck said, "Washington, D.C. August 28, I ask for your continued prayers. And I... God knows what I'm talking about. Ask him for - ask him for his divine providence and the finger of the lord to appear." He continued, "It is only through divine providence, it is really only through divine providence that this is happening so far."

"I was told to stand where I'm standing." On his August 27 radio show Beck stated: "I'm sorry for the things that I have done that have caused me to be such an imperfect messenger, but I was told to stand where I'm standing. God doesn't promise protection for anything. He doesn't promise me protection for my wealth, for my house, for my body. He doesn't promise anything. He promises me the only thing of value:protection for our souls. But that requires you to do the best that you can. And that's all I'm doing."

8-28 is "the beginning of an awakening"

"We are at the beginning of the awakening." On the August 27 edition of his radio show, Glenn Beck claimed that "we are at the beginning of the awakening. This is a profound moment. This is it. Tomorrow is a step in that. It's not the beginning, it's not the end, its just part of it. You are at the awakening. This is fantastic."

"Pray for the spirit to be in that area unbridled," "this is an awakening." On the August 27 edition of his radio show Beck told a caller "You pray for the spirit to be in that area unbridled. You pray that the people that attend understand that this is a sacred space and that this is an awakening. That it's not a -- it's not atea party rally or anything else. You pray for a veil of protection of both body and spirit on that. And if you would, personally, pray if I would have the ears to hear exactly what I'm supposed to say tomorrow and that I just might just be in the place to where I would say those things."

"A miracle" will occur on 8-28

"I expect a miracle on 8-28." On his July 22 radio show, Beck said "I expect a miracle on 8-28. Witness it with me. Make history."

Beck: "What is going to happen on 8-28 will be a miracle." On his television show on August 11, Beck claimed that "what is going to happen on 8-28 will be a miracle." Beck told his viewers that he is "filled with great hope because I remember, not what I've said to you, but what I know to be true. I've said for some time now, expect miracles." He also told his listeners: "Literally, expect to see miracles. Great, powerful miracles are coming."

Beck asks listeners to "be a part of an American miracle" on 8-28. On the August 23 edition of his radio show, Beck encouraged his listeners to attend his Restoring Honor rally by asking them to "be a part of an American miracle." Beck appealed to his listeners by saying: "Please, if you are not thinking of coming to 8-28, or there's some reason, you're thinking, 'Oh I'm not really sure' -- something miraculous is going to happen on Saturday."

Beck says that "something miraculous is going to happen" at his 8-28 rally. On the August 16 edition of his radio show, Beck claimed that he doesn't "know how many people will come" but that "something miraculous is going to happen." Beck suggested that "your life, your fortune, and your country are at stake." He further stated that "if the people show up, I think it's going to provide a shockwave to this nation." Beck told his listeners they need to "return to God, or we are going to be buried in the rubble of history."

Beck does NOT see divine influence over this farcical book launch . . . he's conning a bunch of his mindless followers into believing that he does. This is what Beck does. He's a sociopath.

The permit does allow him to sell books and pamphlets, but limits other things. But I'm wondering, do you really think he will have the book ready? I think he's getting stretched a little thin. I think one of the reasons he has been so secretive was because he didn't get the book ready and had to pull something else out of his crack. We'll see tomorrow.

I don't know, but he promoted this as a book launch last November. That's all it has ever been. He's the consummate con-man. He's a sociopath.

This should have Beck's picture at the top of the page.

Simon Maloy disagrees with you that that's all it's ever been. He says

There's only one person who might know what's going to happen on Saturday, August 28 in front of the Lincoln Memorial -- Glenn Beck -- and there's a good chance even he's not sure. Beck's "Restoring Honor" event has gone through so many different changes that it's impossible to nail down what will or won't be included. First it was an educational seminar, then it was a political rally, then it was a book release party, then it was a veterans benefit, then it was a civil rights rally, then it was a celebration of Martin Luther King, then it was a religious revival, then it was all of the above, none of the above, and some of the above all at once.

Having seen what Glenda the idiot does, I don't believe that even he knows what this is going to be.

Hopefully, the turnout will be similar to other Fox-backed rallies-disappointing to the reich-wingers.

I'm not as antsy today as I was yesterday about the rally. There has to be something, because if it isn't a book, it's a lot of hoopla for a few cheesy speeches by second raters; I can't imagine he would blow a gig this easily. I don't think Glennie is that dumb or that deluded, but I could be very wrong. I'm feeling balanced or accepting or resolved. I think I could go with whatever comes out of his little party, one way or the other. You're right about the sociopath list, it sure fits.

According to Beck's website, which still contains the information about the book launch, it's about the book launch.

              Maloy's article is an opinion.

His remarks "It is going to be a historic moment.", "It is going to provide a shock wave.", "Something miraculous is going to happen." etc. makes me wonder if he has hired an assassin to do him in, thinking that would make him go down as a hero. I've often thought he is a suicide waiting to happen. I put nothing past this freak. And what was his motive telling his audience for weeks that all the hotels are sold out, when it was clearly a lie? Does he not want them to show up?

Why are you lying about this?

His website did NOT say that it was about the book launch.

That was something from LAST November!

I swear, you have a terrible history of being unwilling to admit your errors. It's NOT a good character trait.

You lied, repeatedly, about what you challenged the poster named Bobby Jindal Fan about. You repeatedly said that you'd provide links to comments where he said certain things that he never wrote. You never provided those links - because they didn't exist! When others, myself included, provided multiple alternative links that proved OTHER lies from BJF, you then claimed that the lies YOU had alleged were proven by those links. They weren't. You were called on that dishonesty, multiple times, but failed to ever acknowledge it.

And NOW, you refuse to acknowledge that Glenn Beck stopped claiming that it was a book launch for months! The book isn't coming out until October. It wasn't a book launch.

Did you LISTEN to his speech? He mentioned NOTHING about the book OR "the plan"!

Your assertion that he was going to use this as a platform for his book launch wasn't based upon good judgment, and the facts have proven you wrong! Yet you still won't admit it.

Just to clarify, since I doubt that bintx WILL admit her falsehood, even now....

Glenn Beck's website today, and last week and last month DID NOT say that this event was about a book launch. It DID say that back in November. That changed. All you're citing is a historical posting about this event, and NOT what he had been saying about this event for months!

Here's the posting from that same page within his website on Friday - NO mention of the book or "the Plan".

There are 4000 postings in his "Current Events and Politics" page. It's a historical record of ALL of his postings there.

Trying to cite something he wrote back in November and then asserting it's STILL the impetus behind the event today is ridiculous!

The Huffington Post mentions a post from Salon that says that it hasn't been a book launch event for a while.

(The event was originally billed as the unveiling of a new Beck book called "The Plan," which would outline steps to take over the next 100 years to "restore our great country." That was later scrapped for a vague focus on restoring honor.)

          And also this

The one catch is that the sponsorship of SOWF -- a tax-exempt charity -- means that the event cannot be "political," as Beck's promotional literature emphasizes.

Time reported today that SOWF has required speakers, including Palin, to sign an agreement "not to talk politics." On Saturday, we'll see what that really means.

It's still on his website, DellDolly, together with the "vague focus on restoring honor."

            - On August 28, 2010, I ask you, your family and neighbors to join me at the feet of Abraham Lincoln on the National Mall for the unveiling of The Plan and the birthday of a new national movement to restore our great country.

I've posted repeatedly over the past couple of months about the sponsorship of SOWF creating the glitch requiring that there be NO political signage or speech. It puts SOWF at risk of losing their tax exempt status.

            Thanks, though.

I think most of his followers know he is just nothing but a carnival huckster. Beck's delusional description of what would transpire left every one wondering what on earth he was talking about. I have several friends, moderates all, who went so they could get the facts about what a drag this so called "great rally" was really like. I have not heard from any of them but I doubt I shall get glowing reports. This guy is a self promoting bafoon who thinks he can co-opt the King legacy. All he did accomplish with his attempt to do so was to make himself obviously the silly bafoon he is compared to MLK.

I am a religious person. Faith matters to me, honor matters to me, hope and charity matter to me. I have known people who have had hard lives, done bad things and then cleaned themselves up. I do believe it is possible to turn your life around and change your ways, but I have never gotten anything but negative vibes from Glennie. He may talk the talk (sometimes) but he doesn't walk the walk; and truth told, most of the time, he isn't even talking the talk. He is one of the meanest, nastiest loudmouths I have ever heard. Much of the time, he makes my skin crawl. For him to be wrapping himmself in both God and the flag is disgusting. I also happen to believe that God punishes those who abuse His words and His followers for their own good. I think Glennie's rally is sacrilegious and he will have many sins to answer for.

After "studying" Mr. Beck for several months (not a pleasant task), I have come to the conclusion that he is suffering from a mental problem. This is probably not news to most people, but I am serious. If you watch his eye movements, sudden facial tics, and rapid changes in posture and expressions, it is apparent that he is, to be charitable, nuts. OR,he is the greatest actor of this age, gifted with the ability to maintain a "character" without any variation. His delusional rants could not be actual "beliefs". Most of the time I have no idea what he is talking about. Just WHO is "hijacking our country and constitution"? How is the United States "heading for destruction"? Please, somebody, explain this man to me. I can understand his appeal when 47 per cent of the extreme right believe Obama is a Muslim and is not a citizen, but that gives me no comfort.

"what is going to happen on 8-28 will be a miracle." Beck told his viewers that he is "filled with great hope because I remember, not what I've said to you, but what I know to be true. I've said for some time now, expect miracles." He also told his listeners: "Literally, expect to see miracles. Great, powerful miracles are coming."

... For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect – if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time (Matthew 24:10–13;24 NIV).

Following the 2004 election many media companies began adding religious content where none had been present before, on the belief that "values voters" swung the presidential election.

Two problems with that assumption. The demographics of states is complicated. Different analyses of swing states can pinpoint different groups as having "swung" the election.

Secondly, even if that's correct, the number of those voters who might have made the difference in key states is small when compared with national statistics. Since tv ratings don't work like the electoral college, its wrongheaded to use the math of presidential elections in marketing decisions.

The real reason that he chose the 28th of August was that John Stewart and Stephen Colbert will be on vacation for two weeks following that date.

He gets two weeks free from merciless mocking, by which time it is a stale joke.

gosh, i don't need stewart or colbert to mock beck, he's eminently mockable by anyone.

one piece of advice, for anyone planning on attending: don't get too close to mr. beck. when that big bolt 'o lightning comes down, and fries his fat ass, you don't want to get singed. i hope they have a clean up crew waiting in the wings. god is not amused.

He has predicted "a miracle" will occur at the event...
With all those angry people gathered in one place, I think it was a miracle that no one was shot.
