"Restoring Honor": Glenn Beck honors Glenn Beck

August 28, 2010 7:43 pm ET — 102 Comments

Much of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" weekend -- and the run-up to it -- focused on one thing: Glenn Beck. Beck introduced a Beck-sanctioned clergy group that he claimed represented "180 million people," repeatedly associated himself with Martin Luther King Jr., made outlandish claims about the impact of the events, and was praised as "one of America's most trusted and honored citizens."

"As Martin Luther King said ... ": Beck's litany of self-aggrandizing claims

Beck announces the creation of his own organization of clergy members, the "Black Robe Regiment." During his August 27 "Divine Destiny" event at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Beck said, "Tonight, you are going to witness something historic," and later added that "some of the best and bravest pastors, priests, rabbis, clerics in the country" were present at the event. He continued, "Tomorrow, we will announce the beginning of the Black Robe Regiment."

Introducing Black Robe Regiment, Beck claims that clergy in his crowd "represent 180 million people." During his August 28 "Restoring Honor" event on the National Mall, Beck said, "The Black Robe Regiment is back again today. These 240 men and women of all faiths are standing here today. ... These 240 men and women from all faiths represent thousands of clergy that we couldn't fit into this area that are amongst you now -- thousands that have come here to the Mall to stand with America and God. And those thousands that are here represent 180 million people."

Beck: "As Martin Luther King said, I don't know if I'll be there when we reach the promised land." Beck said on his August 27 radio show that "we are at the beginning of the awakening." He continued: "As Martin Luther King said, 'I don't know if I'll be there when we reach the promised land, I don't know how long it's going to take, but we are going to reach the promised land, or at least the edges of the Promised Land.' "

Beck: "I can relate to Martin Luther King probably the most." During "Restoring Honor," after reciting the names of Moses, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington, Beck said that "out of all these giants, I can relate to Martin Luther King probably the most because we haven't carved him in marble yet."

Beck: "I have been looking for the next George Washington. ... I know he is in this crowd." During "Restoring Honor," Beck said, "Somewhere in this crowd -- I know it. I have been looking for the next George Washington. I can't find him. I know he is in this crowd. He may be 8 years old, but this is the moment. This is the moment that he dedicates his life, that he sees giants around him. And 25 years from now, he will come not to this stair, but to those stairs. And he can proclaim, 'I have a new dream.' That must be our goal: to raise the next great monument."

Beck compares himself to "the man who saw the iceberg" on the Titanic. During "Restoring Honor" Beck said, "I know that many in this country think that I'm a fearmonger. It is not a label that I think applies. I do talk about frightening things. But I don't think the man who saw the iceberg as the Titanic was about to hit it and said, 'It's an iceberg,' was a fearmonger. He was warning people on the ship."

Beck at Kennedy Center: "We are 12 hours away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America." During "Divine Destiny," Beck declared: "We are 12 hours away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America. And it has nothing to do with this city or politics. It has everything to do with God Almighty."

Beck: "America today begins to turn back to God." During "Restoring Honor," Beck said, "Something beyond imagination is happening. Something that is beyond man is happening. America today begins to turn back to God."

Beck says "there won't be a dry eye in the house" during his speech "because it is so stirring." On his August 27 radio show, Beck told listeners that they "will regret not being" at the event, adding that "there won't be a dry eye in the house at the beginning of" his speech "because it is so stirring."

Beck: "God's just like given me like hints on stuff, you know, like, come on, can't you be a little more plain?" During "Divine Destiny," Beck said to conservative activist David Barton: "Maybe he does it to everybody else, but God's just like given me like hints on stuff, you know, like, come on, can't you be a little more plain? And, he just gives you hints."

"Servant of God": Beck's honorees and associates heap praise on him

Jackson: "God sent his son to this earth so that we could all gather. And I think that's the dream and the vision of Glenn Beck." During "Restoring Honor," Rev. C.L. Jackson, the recipient of the Beck-awarded "faith" medal, said, "God brought us here through this bright young -- I call him -- servant of God, son of God, Glenn Beck. ... God sent his son to this Earth so that we could all gather. And I think that's the dream and the vision of Glenn Beck.

Huntsman: Beck is "one of America's most trusted and honored citizens." During "Restoring Honor," a medal honoring charity was awarded to businessman Jon Huntsman Sr. Emma Houston, a woman who was treated for cancer at Huntsman's namesake cancer institute, accepted it on his behalf. After saying, "May I quote him exactly," she said, "Glenn Beck is one of America's most trusted and honored citizens. I am grateful to him for presenting to me, through Emma Houston, this award for charity."

Gray: Beck is "America's history professor." At "Divine Destiny," Pat Gray, co-host of Beck's radio show, said about Beck, "You know him as, as someone described to me in line at the National Archive today, 'America's history professor,' someone who tells the truth about what's going on in America today," adding, "I know him as someone who cares so deeply about America that he loses sleep nightly. ... He is a man who now loves people with all his heart and loves the Lord with all his heart, might, mind, and spirit. I know him as a man -- and so do you -- as a man who works tirelessly fighting for this country."

Alveda King thanks Beck for using "his popularity and influence to bring us together." During "Restoring Honor," Alveda King, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s niece, said, "It's absolutely wonderful for Glenn to use his popularity and influence to bring us together to focus not on an election or political cause, but to focus on honor and on the content of our character, and not the color of our skin. God bless you, Glenn."

Beck associates himself with the divine

Beck: 9-11 was a "wake-up call" from God. During "Restoring Honor," Beck said, "The Lord will always send a people wake-up calls. And he has been sending us wake-up call, after wake-up call, after a wake-up call. ... [Y]ou can send two kinds of wake-up calls. One through fear, like 9-11. 9-11 woke us up, and we stood shoulder-to-shoulder for a very short period of time."

Beck's "message to you" at Kennedy Center: "Trust in the Lord. If he tells you to do it, do it." During "Divine Destiny," Beck said: "My message to you tonight is: Stand where He wants you stand, and trust in the Lord. If He tells you to do it, do it. If you can't figure it out, He will. Just do it."

Beck embraces statement that "this is the beginning of the end of darkness." During "Divine Destiny," Beck said that earlier, he asked Alveda King, "Can you feel it?" Beck added, "And she said, 'Yes, I can. This is the beginning of the end of darkness. We have been in darkness for a long time.' "

Beck promoted event with weeks of self-aggrandizement

Promotional video compares 8-28 to moon landing, Iwo Jima, signing of Declaration. In a video posted on a "Producers' Blog" at his website, Beck placed "Restoring Honor" in the context of the moon landing, the Montgomery bus boycott, Iwo Jima, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and other landmark historical events. It also suggested that Beck is following in the tradition of Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, most of the Founding Fathers, Martha Washington, the Wright Brothers, and other notable historical figures. The video was also shown at "Restoring Honor" itself.

The "spirit of God unleashed": Beck claims divine influence over his event. In the days and weeks leading up to the weekend of 8-28, Beck repeatedly promoted the idea that God was directly involved in the weekend's events. He predicted "a miracle" would occur at the event, said that attendees would "see the spirit of God unleashed," and claimed the rally will produce an "awakening."

"American miracle": Beck's outrageous predictions for his "historic" 8-28 rally. Beck promoted his rally with outrageous hyperbole, calling it everything from "an American miracle" to a "defibrillator to the heart of America." Beck also claimed that with the rally, he and his audience would be able to "reclaim" the "distorted" civil rights movement.

And it's already started with Bachmann saying a million.

          Do I hear 2 million? 2 Million? Do I hear 3 million? C'mon folks. don't be shy....

Don't these people realize that whatever impact their rally might have is just further diminished every time they lie about attendance numbers?

Okay, here's exhibit 1 in why people think tea baggers and Beck supporters are..well...hypocritical.

This guy goes to a rally put on by a media figure who's entire purpose fo putting on the rally is to tell you what to think...and see's no irony in wearing that shirt.

            It's like wearing a D.A.R.E shirt to a crackhouse.

Classic, markb. Concerned about hate. Says the guy who claimed that Arabs played no part in the development of mathematics even though algebra is an Arabic word. And that there are no programs still in existence today that began under FDR. (Did you ever find any of these programs in your exhaustive search, markb?) And claims that McVeigh was a registered Democrat. Did you ever get to the bottom of that accusation, markb? You are always so tolerant of ignorance, I will give you that.

It's almost a shame that I didn't record it, because sometimes I enjoy watching horrible things. In a way, immersing myself in the horribleness helps me to appreciate other things that are better. Bi, I feel sorry for you, does not matter what happens in this country you will only follow what your told by the folks that run this website. I saw for weeks leading up to this event all the names and insults you passed here on Glenn Beck and those that listen to him. It does not matter if only 1 person showed up for the event, it is their choice to show up and listen. I am sure the families that will receive the money he raised for SOWF (5 million) are very happy for what Glenn Beck did for them and the attention he has brought to this group for the ongoing money that will follow. There is no pretend here, we know this country is going the wrong way, it has been for years. It is time to put God back into this country, it is time we take personal responsibility for ourselves, not the government.

No, we're saying that you keep on worshiping at the foot of the Beck altar. He is your savior. He is being divinely inspired to propogate a right wing agenda while asking for your money. God wants you to give Glen Beck money. God wants you to follow Glen Beck. We know this because God is telling this to Glen each and every day. Forsake Christ and follow Beck. I mean, how much more plain can it be? It is obvious God has seen fit to push Christ aside because he has found a new "son" to lead his people. Just think of the great place you will have in heaven.....being one of the first believers and all.

No need to feel sorry for me, markie, I'm not the faux conservative groupie of a faux conservative sociopathic con-man.

BTW, Five million dollars was raised, that doesn't mean that SOWF got the five million dollars. Beck's website and SOWF's website were quite clear that SOWF would receive whatever was left after expenses were paid.

Oh, and those folks who were bused in? Of course, it was their choice. They chose to accept a free ride courtesy of Beck's latest corporate sponsor, FreedomWorks, and the Koch brothers. If someone offered me a free trip to D.C., I'd probably go, too.

Glenn Beck appears to think quite a bit of himself. Too bad he isn't more introspective: he might actually have been a human being.

If it isn't 'all about Glenn', he really has no time for it. Glenn is about one thing: money for Glenn.

I was there today. It was quite interesting. I had my "Dr. King fought and died for social justice" sign and only got a few comments and one debate. The comments were along th eline of social justice means something different now than it did then and a few not social justice, equal justice. The one debate actually surprised me because the nice lady has actually read Dr. King's papers and was quite knowledgable about the civil rights movement. It was a pleasant debate until she started in on the whole Obama is radical and destroying the constitution. I did put her on her heals for a minute when I asked to give me ONE example of the threat to the constitution. I had to end the debate when she told me she believed only about 0.5% of the people dislike Obama because of his race. That to me is delusional, 5-10% I would have accepted but 0.5%????????????? Well after seeing our little discussion I was interviewed by Al Jezeera TV and a Spanish newspaper. After that fun i met my dad at Dunbar high for the Sharpton march which was very enjoyable. Long walk in the hot sun but there were no dogs sicced on us and no fire hoses but i suspect there may have been some in our group who did go through that in the past. All in all interesting day.

I cannot believe that any good Christian could listen to Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh. My soul bleeds for our country. Yesterday I was a poll worker for special primary election for WV senator, and one couple came in and started talking about watching Beck's show on the mall, and how exciting and wonderful it was and how it made a liar out of Al Sharpton, how she had wanted to be there until she realized there was this election so she stayed home and just watched on cspan. (Of the five pollworkers, two of us were Democrat.) Everyone joined in rhapsodizing about the show and saying, "We should all pray for them," and then I said, "We are not supposed to talk politics in the precinct" but a Republican said, "But this has nothing to do with the election." No one suspected, I guess, that I was feeling distinctly uncomfortable, because of course I dared not speak up when I really wanted to jump up and scream.
BTW, you should read Johnathan Westminster's (Pseudonym) "The 15% Solution: A Political History of American Fascism, 2001-2022," written prophetically in 1996. A scary, spine-chilling book, purports to be a history written in 2048, of the fascist/theocratic takeover of our govt beginning with 2000 election. How prophetic it all is, how close they came in the first decade of this century, because as we can see the conservatives/fundamentalists have not given up, will not give up. They have been working for this takeover for decades. I fear for our country. May God have mercy on America.

Glenn Beck is an opportunist. A charlatan. A fraud. A paranoid alcoholic jerk!

That this piece of garbage Glenn Beck had the audacity to go to the very spot that MLK did 47 years ago yesterday (which Beck claimed was unintentional) and began to spout off all kinds of obvious bull-cookies, lies, and backwards thinking.

He took the message of MLK and took a nasty pile on it! And then had the nerve to claim he was emulating MLK and that God was speaking through him.

If I or anyone else had reason to hate Glenn Beck before, this cemented it!

Other than that... his very white smarmy little rally was just a fine piece of typical American arrogance, ignorance, race baiting, and vileness.

The day after 9/11 I did what many people did. I went out to buy a flag for my front porch. In New Orleans, all the shops that sold flags are owned by (I can't type the word, but you can guess). They had doubled the price and did not include a 3 foot dowel; that was extra. I bought one anyway and mounted next to my front door. The very next day it was stolen. So much for "honor".

Megalomaniac with delusions of grandeur is the just the tip of the iceberg with Glenn Beck. This is a person who sees himself as a messianic figure, the next Jesus, the next ruler of the Earth.

All the tin pot dictators in history combined don't begin to equal the expansive realms of freakishly disturbed ego that Beck not only exhibits on a daily basis but revels in.

I'VE GOT IT! I FINALLY GOT IT! Almost without their knowledge, Fox has their own Steven Colbert! Colbert plays a complete jerk and is full of hilarious misconceptions, love of himself, completely without self-awareness as a fool, and wraps himself in the flag. That is the secret of his enormous popularity. Everyone LOVES Steven Colbert! The big difference, however, is that we KNOW Mr. Colbert is ACTING and THAT is why we do not take him seriously. Mr. Dreck (uh, sorry...Beck) is a far better actor than Colbert in that he is absolutely convincing in his foolishness.

If these people are the ones who represent the Christians in America, I want no part of it. Where is "God's Love"? This is a bully who thinks he can force the country to believe as he does, he thinks he is God and so do his followers. I saw a video from some of the people at this rally and heard one man when asked if he still believed Obama wanted his guns replied, "He can have them, one bullet at a time." This is the Christian nation in America. I would rather consider myself an atheist than be in the same group as these hate filled lunatics.

Also, Beck who loves to extol the writings of Thomas Paine as his hero should know that in "The Age Of Reason", Paine said, “Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is none more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifying to man, more repugnant to reason and more contradictory in itself than this thing called Christianity. Too absurd for belief, too impossible to convince and too inconsistent for practice, it renders the heart torpid or produces only atheists and fanatics.”

I got that from a great article, must read from Playboy.
