Hatchet job: Fox crops Reid statement to pretend he has a "political scandal"

October 28, 2010 12:29 am ET — 21 Comments

Special Report deceptively quoted a statement from Sen. Harry Reid's office to advance what Bret Baier called "a political scandal" involving a former low-level staffer. But the portions of the statement Fox News omitted make clear that the alleged misconduct occurred before the staffer joined Reid's office and that the office had been unaware of the allegations.

Fox selectively quotes from statement to support claim of "political scandal" for Reid

Baier introduces report by asserting Reid is dealing with a "political scandal." On the October 27 edition of Fox News' Special Report, host Bret Baier introduced a segment on the alleged misconduct of a former low-level staffer to Sen. Harry Reid by saying, "The last thing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needed was a political scandal as he fights to hold onto his seat from Nevada. But he has one tonight."

Report omits key portions of Reid statement. During the segment, correspondent Shannon Bream reported on allegations that a former low-level staff member of Sen. Harry Reid, Diana Tejada, was married to a Lebanese national, Bassam Mahmoud Tarhini, seven years ago in order to permit him to stay in the United States and lied to federal authorities about the marriage. Bream's report suggested that Reid's office may have known about the allegations. But in reporting Reid spokesman Jim Manley's statement, Bream eliminated the sentence that makes clear that Tejada's actions took place before she worked for Reid, as well as a phrase stating that the office had been unaware of the allegations against Tejada:

BREAM: Reid's office says, quote, "The staffer at issue is no longer with our office...the bottom line remains that this story was a desperation measure by partisan Republicans, who have stooped to slinging mud about junior staffers to score points in the waning days of [Sharron Angle's] campaign."

On-screen text quoting the statement indicated with an ellipsis that the middle of the statement had been omitted:

Full Reid statement: Office was "not previously aware" of allegations of misconduct, which "took place several years before" staffer worked for Reid

Reid statement: "Our office was not previously aware of these allegations. ... The conduct alleged, which took place several years before the staffer worked for Senator Reid, was clearly wrong." Manley's statement to FoxNews.com is as follows, with the portions that Special Report omitted in bold:

Our office was not previously aware of these allegations and, following an internal investigation, the staffer at issue is no longer with our office. The conduct alleged, which took place several years before the staffer worked for Senator Reid, was clearly wrong. But the bottom line remains that this story was a desperation measure by partisan Republicans, who have stooped to slinging mud about junior staffers to score points in the waning days of her campaign.

Well, Hey. Fox had to "balance" that statement a "fair" bit. It was just too darn long for their audience to comprehend.

Why Didn't Bret Baier cover Sharon Angle's Racist Ad?
Senator Reid was never told of this but it's still His Bad?

Actually Fox has given up any right they might have had to claim fair and balanced. They are not a credible news organization and that is very embarrassing to me, a lifelong Republican. It sort of indicates they already know that Republicans cannot win on the issues so they use these trumped up scare tactics. However, in the end, Fox and the candidates they claim they represent just look pitiful like a bunch of big fat liars. Candidates should run, not walk away from Fox support since it is so disgusting. I have been to Republican precinct meetings when this scum is discussed openly and it is so disgusting to me. Makes me KNOW that Republicans think they cannot win on the issues so they distort and lie all the time. It is just plain sick!

I always stop reading a post when I read, "I've always been a life long, (you fill in the blank). If you think its gonna justify a statement by telling everybody what you are, its usually a lie. Don't be afraid to say your a progressive, come out into the light let the public judge you on your comment and keep the lies to yourself...

They had to "balance" it against the attention span of their viewers, that is. The rule of thumb is, no story contains more words than the average I.Q. points of the typical viewer.

This is inexcusable behavior on the part of FoxNews!

To strip the comments of their context, and to leave out the important stuff that describes the lack of culpability on the part of Reid's office is so incredibly offensive and SO politically-partisan that anyone directly associated with FoxNews should be embarrassed for life!

Who was it that screened and selected the individual staff position? You know security checks and the like?

You are surprised by the fact that Fox has done this? You should expect it. This is the only fact that occurs on Fox, that they edit and distort facts. Kinda like a metafact, but of evil inclination.

I ask at this point challenging Fox to report a story from start to finish w/o telling a lie. Only facts. Real fact checked facts. One Stupid story. Can be about cats, car races, trees, ANYTHING! God these people are really getting under my skin. *
      * First post I was quite excited and used some "bad" words. This is the clean version.

difference, media matters reports on the wackos on the right, gateway pundit reports on the wackos on the left, fox reports on both, something sorely missing on ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC et al...

Whether it happened yesterday or years ago, it represents the actions of one woman, not Reid.

Still, I expect this from Fox. They have merged with the GOP to become a conservative juggernaut.

      So ... double standard???

Whitman's maid falsified her documents at the employment agency ... BEFORE working for Whitman

Whitman said she was unaware of the violation -- hubbie got the letter and gave it to Diaz to take care of (which she didn't).

Same same. Sauce for the gander....

        Not with this crowd!

It actually also says some kind of alarming about the quality of the senator's staff screening/selection process. I trust the good people of Navada take note.

So MSNBC and CNN reported the Whitman story as you relate it (as Terrapin attests) yet Fox reported the Reid story misleadingly cropped, which you do not deny.
How can you possibly see those media treatments as "Same same"?
        Double standard???
        In what universe?
