Right-Wing Media Use Logan's Attack To Justify Bigotry Against Muslims

February 17, 2011 11:37 am ET — 31 Comments

In the wake of the brutal and devastating sexual assault committed against CBS News international correspondent Lara Logan by an Egyptian mob, many in the right-wing media have used the attack to fuel their anti-Muslim agenda.

Right-Wing Media Tout Logan's Assault As Proof Muslims Are "Violent" "Animals"

Schlussel: It "Warms My Heart" That Logan Got "A Taste Of Just How 'Peaceful' Muslims And Islam Really Are." In a February 15 post on her website, conservative radio host Debbie Schlussel criticized Logan, stating that "Islam Fan Lara Logan Gets a Taste of Islam." In a February 16 update to the post, she stated that the assault on Logan "warms my heart." From the post:

I did say that it warms my heart when reporters who openly deny that Islam is violent and constantly promote it get the same kinds of threats of violence I get every day from Muslims. Because now they know how it feels. They aren't so dismissive of the threats when those threats are directed at them, instead of at us little people. And yet they still won't admit that THIS. IS. ISLAM. Lara Logan was among the chief cheerleaders of this "revolution" by animals. Now she knows what Islamic revolution is really all about.

[...]

So sad, too bad, Lara. No one told her to go there. She knew the risks. And she should have known what Islam is all about. Now she knows. Or so we'd hope. But in the case of the media vis-a-vis Islam, that's a hope that's generally unanswered. [Media Matters, 2/16/11; Debbie Schlussel, 2/15/11]

Hoft Blames Logan For Her Sexual Assault, Because Her "Liberal Belief System Almost Got Her Killed." In a February 16 Gateway Pundit post, Jim Hoft stated: "Lara Logan is lucky she's alive. Her liberal belief system almost got her killed on Friday." When confronted by Media Matters, Hoft refused to retract the smear, stating of the "far left": "[Y]our twisted agenda has caused such havoc and pain around the world." [Media Matters, 2/16/11]

Malkin: "This Is Business As Usual For Many Parts Of The Middle East." During a February 16 interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin said of the attacks on Logan: "It's monstrous, and as many women in particular will tell you, this is business as usual for many parts of the Middle East." [Fox News' Hannity, 2/16/11]

Beck Cites Sexual Assault Against Logan As Evidence That He Was Right About Egypt. During the February 16 edition of his Fox News program, Glenn Beck stated: "This was the only program -- we were mocked and ridiculed. I said, 'Don't pay attention to this scene. Don't do it. This is the beginning, this is not the end.'" He added, "While everyone was saying, 'Oh listen, this is great!' in this crowd, we found out today, that an American woman was being sexually assaulted." [Fox News' Glenn Beck, 2/16/11]

I've been hearing this story all wrong... without the right-wing media, I never would have known that every single Muslim in Egypt raped Logan. I'm sure glad we have the Party of Personal Responsibility to blame rape on anyone but the actual rapists.

Question for the ever-so-caring right-wing media - what was the religion of the people who SAVED Mrs. Logan? Were they non-Egyptian Christians flown in?

Bigotry? Right! Because women in Muslim countries are treated so much better than women in America. They have so many more freedoms and are treated as equals to men. Go ahead and bury your heads in the sand.

As for what Malkin said....it IS business as usual in many parts of the Middle East. It just isnt "politically correct" to say so.

As for what Beck said...yes, there was a crowd celebrating and yes, there was an American reporter being sexually assaulted.

Twist as you wish but MM4A posting this actualy shows a dilemma the left faces....Political correctness over the rights of women.

Do all of the rapes and sexual assaults committed by members of the military and military contractors make rape "business as usual" for our armed forces? Is that a dilemma for the right - national security over the rights of women?

ah the internet. where some pos can slander our military from the safety of mom's basement.

you realize that if this were taken to court in a muslim country, the rapist would get a mild punishment and she would be stoned to death.

before you paint the military like that, maybe you should have a few facts.

The shameful record of our military on sexual assault has been widely reported, but probably not on Fox, which explains how you missed it. So here are some facts for you, you would-be PC thug:

The Pentagon's latest figures show that nearly 3,000 women were sexually assaulted in fiscal year 2008, up 9% from the year before; among women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, the number rose 25%. When you look at the entire universe of female veterans, close to a third say they were victims of rape or assault while they were serving - twice the rate in the civilian population.

The problem is even worse than that. The Pentagon estimates that 80% to 90% of sexual assaults go unreported, and it's no wonder. Anonymity is all but impossible; a Government Accountability Office report concluded that most victims stay silent because of "the belief that nothing would be done; fear of ostracism, harassment, or ridicule; and concern that peers would gossip." More than half feared they would be labeled troublemakers. A civilian who is raped can get confidential, or "privileged," advice from her doctors, lawyers, victim advocates; the only privilege in the military applies to chaplains. A civilian who knows her assailant has a much better chance of avoiding him than does a soldier at a remote base, where filing charges can be a career killer - not for the assailant but the victim. Women worry that they will be removed from their units for their own "protection" and talk about not wanting to undermine their missions or the cohesion of their units. And then some just do the math: only 8% of cases that are investigated end in prosecution, compared with 40% for civilians arrested for sex crimes. Astonishingly, about 80% of those convicted are honorably discharged nonetheless.

The sense of betrayal runs deep in victims who joined the military to be part of a loyal team pursuing a larger cause; experts liken the trauma to incest and the particular damage done when assault is inflicted by a member of the military "family."

Women are often denied claims for posttraumatic stress caused by the assault if they did not bring charges at the time. There are not nearly enough mental-health professionals in the system to help them. Female vets are four times more likely to be homeless than male vets are, according to the Service Women's Action Network, and of those, 40% report being victims of sexual assault.

Experts offer many theories for the causes: that military culture is intrinsically violent and hypermasculine, that the military is slow to identify potential risks among raw young recruits, that too many commanders would rather look the other way than acknowledge a breakdown in their units, that it has simply not been made a high enough priority. "A lot of my male colleagues believe that the only thing a general needs to worry about is whether he can win a war," says Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez of the Armed Services Committee. "People are not taking this seriously. Commanding officers in the field are not understanding how important this is."

Love how you idealogs twist words to suit your agenda. My use of the phrase "business as usual" is because women are treated like underlings and property of men in most Muslim. It is more "business as usual" there than it is here. I didnt blame it on "all muslims". If you want to deny that it is more "business as usual" there than here. That's fine, keep your head in the sand.

Here is a question that your "PC" ideology likely wont allow you to answer. Do American women have more freedoms and better treatment than women in most Muslim countries?

Sure, but it is not because they are Muslim countries, it is because we are a secular one.

Hmmm. I was unaware that her attackers had been identified and confirmed to be Muslim. Seeing has how Egypt was under secular rule and despite the ravings of some right-wingers, the protest was about government oppression and not religion, I think anyone who just assumes her attackers were Muslim is fear-mongering.

Parden me for assuming that the men in the picture behind her are Muslim. Parden me for assuming that the chants of "Jew, Jew, Jew" were done by Muslim men. My mistake.

Recent polls show that the Muslim Brotherhood has very little support as a political force in Egypt.

Overall I think people, including women, are better off in Western liberal democracies like the US, though even here you find fundamentalist communities where women are required to be subservient. That doesn't have anything to do with the attack on Logan, however.

You need help in reading comprehension. This is an article about the Right associating ALL muslims as Animals. This is not an article about Muslim Women being treated horribly (which I some are of course, but that is a completely different story.) This is an article about an American woman who was doing her job being run through by the Right so they can spill their bile and fear of ALL Muslims while doing it.

Why should anyone care what some raving, psychotic female dog like Debbie Schlussel has to say? I mean, this is a woman who believes that all Muslims, without exception, are evil; and who has gone on the record stating that Muslims are the modern-day Nazis. Schlussel is about as extreme a right-wing, lunatic-fringe nutjob as you can get. And furthermore, she is an idiot: recently, on the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death, she said that Lennon was killed by a man who wanted to impress Jodie Foster! When I replied to her blog by pointing out what an idiot she was, she quickly had to re-edit the blog to make everyone else think she never made that mistake-this from someone who's supposed to be a LAWYER! I mean, where did she get her law degree, at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box?! Debbie Schlussel can fall off a cliff, for all I care.

Ever notice that the religion of criminals only matters to rightwingers if it's Muslims and not Christians?

I'm trying to imagine the unhinged outcry if the media had devoted one second discussing the religion of the people who committed homoerotic torture at Abu Ghraib. Would it have been a valid part of that story to say that ALL the people who committed the tortures at Abu Ghraib were Christian? Would that have been "fair and balanced" or extremely "biased and vicious"? Would that have been a key part of the story or would it have been pointless "Christian bashing"?

Only when a bigot's standards are applied to them do they suddenly see how unfair it is.
