Desperate: Right-Wing Media Attack Obama For Taking Time To Consider Bin Laden Options

May 04, 2011 12:14 pm ET — 207 Comments

In the latest desperate attempt to criticize President Obama in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death, right-wing media are hyping a U.K. Daily Mail article to attack Obama for taking 16 hours to consider his decision regarding the assault on bin Laden--which reportedly had several potentially harmful consequences--by calling Obama "feckless" and "our sleepy president."

Daily Mail Claims Analysts "Confirmed Beyond Doubt" Bin Laden's Location; Obama "Stunned" Officials By Taking Time To Decide

Daily Mail: "Obama Took SIXTEEN HOURS To Make Up His Mind About Bin Laden Mission." In an unbylined May 3 article, the U.K. Daily Mail wrote that Obama "kept military commanders hanging by declaring he would 'sleep on it' before taking 16 hours to give the go-ahead to raid Bin Laden's compound." [Daily Mail, 5/3/11]

Daily Mail: "[A]nalysts Confirmed Beyond Doubt That Bin Laden Was In Busy Town Of Abbottabad." The Daily Mail further claimed:

The mission looked set to be given the all clear last Thursday when analysts confirmed beyond doubt that Bin Laden was in busy town [sic] of Abbottabad in northern Pakistan.

But the president stunned officials when he told a national security meeting that he wanted more time to think - and disappeared out of the room.

'I'm not going to tell you what my decision is now - I'm going to go back and think about it some more,' said Obama, according to the New York Times. He then added 'I'm going to make a decision soon.'

The head of the CIA and other senior intelligence officers who were keen to proceed were left tense as they waited for the president's decision. [Daily Mail, 5/3/11]

In Fact, CIA Chief Said That Analysts Were Only 60-80% Sure Of Bin Laden's Location

Wash. Post: Panetta Said That Analysts Were "Only 60 Percent To 80 Percent Confident That Bin Laden Would Be Found" In Compound. Contrary to the Daily Mail claim that "analysts confirmed beyond doubt" that bin Laden was in Abbottabad, The Washington Post reported that CIA Director Leon Panetta said "analysts were only 60 percent to 80 percent confident that bin Laden would be found." From the Post:

CIA Director Leon Panetta, who supervised the operation, said in interviews that U.S. intelligence agencies never had photographs or other proof that bin Laden was living at the compound in Pakistan that was targeted. Panetta told Time magazine that analysts were only 60 percent to 80 percent confident that bin Laden would be found.

"We never had direct evidence that he in fact had ever been there or was located there," Panetta said in a separate interview with "PBS NewsHour." "The reality was that we could have gone in there and not found bin Laden at all."

President Obama nevertheless approved the operation, Panetta and other U.S. officials said, because there was little chance of obtaining more definitive intelligence on bin Laden's location, which had amounted to a guessing game for the better part of 10 years. [The Washington Post, 5/3/11]

NYT Article Quoted By Daily Mail Made No Mention That Officials Were "Stunned" By Obama Saying He Would Wait To Make Decision. In its May 3 article, the Daily Mail claimed that Obama "stunned officials when he told a national security meeting that he wanted more time to think." The Daily Mail then cited a New York Times article in which Obama is quoted as telling his advisers, "I'm going to go back and think about it some more." However, the Times article makes no mention that officials were "stunned" by Obama's comment, and the Daily Mail did not provide a source for its claim. Indeed, the Times reported that Obama's "four top aides" were prepared to "brief the president" the next morning, but Obama had already decided on what course of action to take. From the Times:

Mr. Panetta told the group that the C.I.A. had "red-teamed" the case -- shared their intelligence with other analysts who weren't involved to see if they agreed that Bin Laden was probably in Abbottabad. They did. It was time to decide.

Around the table, the group went over and over the negative scenarios. There were long periods of silence, one aide said. And then, finally, Mr. Obama spoke: "I'm not going to tell you what my decision is now -- I'm going to go back and think about it some more." But he added, "I'm going to make a decision soon."

Sixteen hours later, he had made up his mind. Early the next morning, four top aides were summoned to the White House Diplomatic Room. Before they could brief the president, he cut them off. "It's a go," he said. The earliest the operation could take place was Saturday, but officials cautioned that cloud cover in the area meant that Sunday was much more likely. [The New York Times, 5/2/11]

Time: Some Obama Advisers Recommended Waiting On Bin Laden Assault In Order To Gather More Intelligence. On May 2, Time's Michael Scherer reported:

The intelligence professionals said they did not know for sure that bin Laden was in the compound. The case was good, but circumstantial. The likelihood, officials told the President, was between 50% and 80%. No slam dunk. Obama went around the table asking everyone to state their opinion. He quizzed his staff about worst case scenarios-the possibility of civilian casualties, a hostage situation, a diplomatic blow-up with Pakistan, a downed helicopter. He was presented with three options: Wait to gather more intelligence, attack with targeted bombs from the air, or go in on the ground with troops. The room was divided about 50-50, said a person in the room. John Brennan, the President's senior counter-terrorism adviser, supported a ground strike, as did the operational people, including Leon Panetta at the CIA. Others called for more time. In the end, about half of the senior aides supported a helicopter assault. The other half said either wait, or strike from above.

Obama left the meeting without signaling his intent. He wanted to sleep on it. At about 8:00 a.m. on Friday, just before he boarded a helicopter that would take him to tour tornado damage in Alabama, Obama called his senior aides into the Diplomatic Room. He told them his decision: A helicopter assault. [Time, 5/2/11, emphasis added]

Nonetheless, Right-Wing Media Hype Daily Mail Article To Attack Obama For Taking Time To Consider Decision

Hoft: "Good Grief. Obama Took 16 HOURS To Make Up His Mind To Get Osama Bin Laden." In a May 3 Gateway Pundit post, Jim Hoft wrote cited the Daily Mail article and wrote, "Good Grief. Obama Took 16 HOURS To Make Up His Mind To Get Osama Bin Laden." Hoft later referred to Obama as "our sleepy president." [Gateway Pundit, 5/3/11, emphasis in original]

Ace Of Spades: "Seems Like A Very Cautious, Feckless, Indecisive Individual Delaying And Delaying On Critical Decisions." In a May 3 Ace of Spades post, blogger Ace cited the Daily Mail article to claim that Obama taking time to think about the decision "[s]eems like a very cautious, feckless, indecisive individual delaying and delaying on critical decisions and then attempting to sound heroic when he finally does what he's being paid to do." However, Ace further wrote, "To Be Honest: I don't begrudge a president some thinking time before a big decision." From Ace of Spades:

On the other hand, after Obama was told (most likely for the fifteenth time) that the CIA was really, really, really quite confident that Osama bin Ladin was at that compound in Abbottabad, he decided he needed to sleep on it.

Sixteen hours later (hours during which Osama might have fled-- bear in mind, his courier's name had just been outed by WikiLeaks), he made up his mind.

How does the media report this? Well, relying upon those in Obama's inner circle (that is to say, his political flunkies and spinners), we're told this:

"But the next morning after 16 hours, Obama summoned four top aides to the White House Diplomatic Room. Before they could speak, the president put his fist on the table and declared 'It's a go'."

Why does it matter that he did this "before they could speak"? They had spoken already yesterday when they strongly, strongly urged the president to give the order, and he had decided to sleep on it.

They were only waiting on him, after all.

So, after 16 hours of vacillation, during which the operation might have been rendered a failure by intervening invents, he fist-bumps a piece of furniture and finally makes up his mind.

This is something to brag about? This is, in Howard Fineman's words, "almost Biblical"?

Seems like a very cautious, feckless, indecisive individual delaying and delaying on critical decisions and then attempting to sound heroic when he finally does what he's being paid to do.

Thanks to OCBill. This is from the Daily Mail, via Drudge.

To Be Honest: I don't begrudge a president some thinking time before a big decision.

But the media still hasn't explained to me which of the previous presidents and which of the potential/hypothetical future presidents wouldn't have ordered this. [Ace of Spades, 5/3/11, emphasis in the original]

Fox Nation: "Obama Took Sixteen Hours to Make Up His Mind About Bin Laden Mission." On May 3, the Fox Nation linked to the Daily Mail article under the headline, "Obama Took Sixteen Hours to Make Up His Mind About Bin Laden Mission." From the Fox Nation:

Right-Wing Media Have Resorted To Absurdities In Struggle To Attack Obama Following Bin Laden's Death

CNN's Loesch Suggested Obama "Politicize[d] The Hell Out Of" Bin Laden Announcement. In a May 2 Twitter post, CNN contributor Dana Loesch wrote: "Geebus. All he had to do was walk out and fist pump. Not politicize the hell out of it."

Geller Accused Obama Of "Shamelessly Strut[ting] Like [A] Peacock." In a May 2 blog post, Pamela Geller wrote: "Gd bless our troops. Obama can puff himself and shamelessly strut like peacock [sic], but hats off to the US military that has been relentless, dogged and brave for ten years in their mission to kill that devout bastard." [Atlas Shrugs, 5/2/11]

Washington Times' Green Bizarrely Cites 2010 Photo Of Jay-Z At The White House To Attack Obama. In a May 3 column, assistant editorial page editor Anneke Green wrote:

While it's glorious that we finally delivered justice to Bin Laden, cowboy-style, it has been a little odd to see how eager President Obama is to take credit for it. Apart from the method of the military operation -- who knew he had it in him?-- his speech announcing the demise of the world's greatest villain was short on key details and sounded more like an extended pat on the back.

Green further used a photograph from rapper Jay-Z's March 2010 visit to the White House to claim that "Mr. Obama has had to grow into his role as the head of state and occupant of the nation's most revered residence." [The Washington Times5/2/11]

Washington Times Complains Obama "Snub[bed] Bush," Showed "No Class" In Speech. In a May 2 editorial, The Washington Times complained that Obama "snub[bed] Bush" and "praise[d] himself" in his announcement that bin Laden had been killed. The editorial baselessly claimed "[b]in Laden assassination wasn't the result of Barack's strategic genius." The editorial continued:

Sunday's only mention of Mr. Bush came when Mr. Obama defended himself by quipping that even his predecessor insisted America isn't at war with Islam. Left unsaid was how Mr. Bush setting the groundwork for the conduct of the war on terrorism provided Mr. Obama with the tools to get this job done. The national unity, sense of purpose and offensive posture were largely the result of Mr. Bush's decisive action and strong leadership following national tragedy. Had Mr. Obama been in Mr. Bush's position on Sept. 11, 2001, bin Laden would still be alive today, and probably winning. [The Washington Times5/2/11]

Geller: "Would Bush Have Washed Bin Laden's Body?" In a May 2 post, Geller wrote:

John Brennan, in an ongoing press conference at the White House, was quite insistent that all "Islamic precepts" were respected and adhered to in the burial at sea of Osama bin Laden. The first priority of the Obama adminstration was the Islamic burial of the man Obama claimed was "not a leader of the Muslim world."

Bush disposed of the remains of Iraqi terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi by burying him in a secret location. Did our soldiers wash al-Zarqawi's body? I am going to puke.

I think this is outrageous and sick. Such respect we give, not only to a mass murderer of Americans in the name of Islam, but deference to the very ideology that has fueled this war on America. [Atlas Shrugs, 5/2/11]

Glenn Beck: "I Have A Real Problem With The Way This Thing Has Been Handled." "I Really Would Have Put [Bin Laden] In A Meat Grinder With A Pig." On May 2, Glenn Beck stated: "I have a real problem with the way this thing has been handled." He later added: "My problem with this is is that we gave this guy a dignified burial at sea. Or at least that's what they said. I really would have put [bin Laden] in a meat grinder with a pig, honestly." [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program5/2/11]

NRO: "The President, In His Rush To Claim Credit, Made A Mistake In Delivering It Himself." A National Review Online post by Claudia Rosett on Obama's announcement declared: "Bin Laden's death is great news, but the president, in his rush to claim credit, made a mistake in delivering it himself." Rosett went on to write:

Osama bin Laden was a pied piper of mass murder, and every effort should be made to avoid in any way dignifying anything about him. Rather than using the presidential pulpit to break the news, President Obama should have left it to one of the U.S. military commanders or spy chiefs whose men took the real risks in this operation.

[...]

Obama should have then followed up by explaining the broader context of this war, and putting terrorists from Hamas to Hezbollah to Moammar Qaddafi on notice that anyone who attacks or even mortally threatens America, or America's allies, can expect the same fate. [National Review Online, 5/2/11]

Mark Steyn: News Should Have Been Announced By "Lowest-Level Official ... At The Department Of Nondescript Bureaucrats." In a National Review Online post, radio talk host and frequent Rush Limbaugh substitute Mark Steyn wrote that he "would have liked bin Laden's death to have been announced by whatever lowest-level official was manning the night desk at the Department of Nondescript Bureaucrats, preferably reading it off the back of an envelope." Steyn continued:

But, if you're going to put the head of state on TV to announce it himself, it would have been better to have been all brisk and businesslike -- "At 0800 hours American military assets entered an address at 27b Jihadist Gardens, etc" -- and finish off with a bit of Churchillian sober uplift about it not being the end or the beginning of the end but maybe the end of the beginning.

[...]

[The speech] managed to be both overwrought and generic -- all that telepromptered overload about cloudless Tuesday mornings was not only tackily over-prettified but came over as unfelt and hand-me-down, like a course exercise in some third-rate creative-writing school's Soaring Oratory class. Or, at any rate, as if they'd loaded up a first draft of September's tenth anniversary speech into the machine. The official announcement was delayed for all this? If ever there was a moment for the commander-in-chief to be real, plainspoken and off his glassy-eyed follow-the-bouncing-ball routine, this was it. It's as if nobody around him knows how to write except in the one tinny key.

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy to rally round the flag, and rally round the president, but rally round this speech? No thanks. [National Review Online, 5/2/11]

Well of course they attack him for thinking. They much prefer a POTUS like W, who was perfectly willing to fabricate "evidence" to sucker us into an illegal war.

      Thinking is for elitists.

it is amazing how the right wing has simultaneously tried to push the ideas that libs are uneducated and helpless zombies who just need the govt to do everything for them, and at the same time they attack colleges and universities for being liberal elite havens.

My favorite part of the article is that they don't think Obama should have announced this news, that someone lower on the totem pole should have. I find it especially humorous due to this. Anyone 'member that?

ill admit to hanging out on the fox boards, and i brought that up yesterday and a foxbot told me it was a poor comparison, because obama made the speech all about himself and bush wasnt actually declaring victory or anything, he just went to go and celebrate with a few servicemen and congratulate them on one specific mission being accomplished.
if that wasnt supposed to be all about bush and essentially declare himself a victor, why was his arrival on a fighter jet in a jumpsuit televised nationally?

Add to that b the carrier had to turn away so that viewers on TV couldn't see the San Diego skyline in the background. That would've been a dead give-away that Bush wasn't far out to sea that the only way to reach the carrier was by fighter jet. He could've saved time and money by being choppered in but like you say it wouldn't have made for the best TV.

It's leaked all over the media. They like to stick to their stereotypes,er, narratives. Take for example yesterday on "Hardball" Howard Finemen(sp) confessed,er, revealed that "they" sometimes critize Obama for being too complex; being too complex! He is supposed to be a "liberal" and he thought the president wasn't "simple" enough? After GWB, he said this about Obama.
On the one hand they say he plays too much BB or golf,on the other he is too complex and detailed. I hope everyone now who is not blinded by hyper partianship can see what kind of President he is. He loves America,he does not bow down out of fear but in respect for others,he is not out to destroy this country,he is very involved in what is going on and takes seriously his job as commander in chief and President of All the people. All the other stuff about birth certificate, muslim, fascist, socialist etc.,etc.,etc., are just distractions and dog-whistle jingo rabble rousing trying to disguise itself as real policy and politics.
"Oh the presidents HCR plan is government takeover, yikes it socialism, fascism, death panels."

Then while people are looking over there what do the Republicans propose? A complete dismantling of Medicare and Medicaid. I hope the few radical authoritarian right wing kooks who post here are not indicative of the American people(I don't they are)and people start to wake up.

          Unbelievable.1) There was a firefight.
          2) There was no firefight.
          3) Bin Laden was “resisting.”
          4) Bin Laden wasn’t armed. (Makes the concept of “resisting” interesting.)
[4.a) And the newest one: the SEALS thought bin Laden was reaching for a weapon.]
          5) He used his wife as a shield.
          6) His wife was killed too.
          7) He didn’t use his wife as a shield. She ran at a SEAL who shot her in the leg, but she’s fine.
8 ) Some other woman — the maid? — was used as a shield. By somebody. Downstairs.
          9) That other woman — downstairs — was killed.
          10) Maybe not. She was killed unless she wasn’t — and who was she, anyway?
          11) Bin Laden’s son was killed.
          12) Unless it was some other guy.
          13) Bin Laden’s daughter saw him get killed. She’s undoubtedly traumatized, poor dear.
          14) They were going to capture Bin Laden until the problem with the helicopter, which was:

          A) It had mechanical trouble
          B) It did a hard landing
          C) It crashed
          D) It clipped a wall with a tail rotor, effectively a crash

15.) They were never going to try to capture him; it was always a kill mission.
          16.) No, it wasn’t.
          17) The chopper blew up.
          18) The SEALs blew it up.
19.) Panetta said yesterday the world needed proof and the photo would be released.
20.) Obama said today in an interview he taped with Steve Kroft for “60 Minutes” to be broadcast Sunday that it won’t be released. It’s too gruesome, would offend Muslim sensibilities (something he worries about a lot — I personally do not give a warm fart on a wet Wednesday about Muslim sensibilities), and how would Americans feel if Muslims released pictures of dead Americans?
21.) Kroft — who’s not a total id iot — pointed out that ever since “Black Hawk Down” days, Muslims have been doing precisely that, filming American bodies being dragged through the streets, filming Daniel Pearl’s head being cut off, filming any and everything.
          22) Obama gets p@ssed at CBS, the tape gets cleaned up, that question disappears. (Inside info.)
23.) We got a “treasure trove” of stuff from hard drives, etc.
24.) There were no phone lines, and no internet access at the “mansion,” they didn’t even have TV — what “treasure trove?”
25.) There is obviously in the pictures of the place a large satellite dish. I guess they used it for making salads.
26.) And now, just today: apparently the idea was to capture him, but only if he was naked. There was a suspicion he might be wearing a suicide bomber type explosive vest, or belt. So if he’s not naked and you can’t see if he has a vest on or not – shoot him.

Referring to yourself in the first person is a good thing in this case, as it shows you realize you are a moron, and realizing that a problem exists is the first step toward correcting it. Of course, since you are a moron, the problem will not be corrected any time soon, but it is a good start.

No way, I ain't doin' your homework. We might grade it for you if you present any, but we know you don't care.

How can anyone explain story-changing when you won't say who told what story? There's no starting point to your non-point.

The kernel of your screed (oh wait, somebody else's screed) would be that you don't care about the Bin Laden operation, but whether you can catch inconsistency in the reports and call it lying. If you can call something lying, and you apply the bogus lying-is-lying-it-all-has-the-same-gravity BS, then you have a "victory." Armed with that "victory," you can proceed to sneer. The same tactic was used with Clinton; he was impeached because of a soiled blue dress, not because of American leadership.

I don't care if Bin Laden was curled up in bed, sucking his thumb, holding a Teddy bear while Tinkerbell showered him with fairy dust as he watched the 700 Club when they busted into his room. You do.

I expect that the operation didn't go through the usual in-house debriefing timeline, because people like you want to know everything right now, from background to finish, because you like porn so much. Given that fascination of yours reflected and amplified by the news media, I expect that you will hear a rush of different versions of the same event from I-don't-know-who, just like you'll get 12 different stories from 12 different witnesses to a robbery. But I still don't care, and you do.

Tell me, hoosier, what about the Bin Laden operation is a game-changer for you--was it just or unjust, and would you change your mind about it if you suddenly learned that Porky Pig shot him with a flaming arrow and he melted?

I didn't feel like re-typing 26 conflicting stories from this Most Transparent Administration Ever at 2:00 in the morning, ThomasJH.

Try disputing the facts, or explaining why you think these guys are so awesome for their careful analysis in the mission and their rush to get the info out, but the info being wrong. Now their clamming up to avoid further embarrassment.

Maybe Bush should've just not let info get out and blamed any discrepancies with stories he wanted the public to know and the actuality he would just say "Hey, the fog of war."

Accountability, guys. It shouldn't just be something you demand from Republicans, but it is. The question now, is why your silence?

                Shameful.

But the handling of this raid by the Obama Admin. from a P.R. standpoint has been a disaster. Conflicting reports are all over the place, and there's no way to think that the government's version was 100% accurate.

Please, don't be naive and say that there wouldn't be legitimate questions from your side if this event happened before 1/20/09. The overwhelming accolades the media has given Obama would have been quite different if it was Bush. Hell, there may even have been stories calling for Bush's impeachment for "illegally" invading a sovereign nation. It's not like Bush got much credit for capturing Saddam.

The Hypocrisy of Nancy Pelosi on Osama Bin Laden

It should no surprise that Nancy Pelosi is another political opportunist. If you need the perfect example, check out how she continues to flip on the subject of Osama Bin Laden. After 9/11, she was unified with the Bush Administration to deliver justice.

Soon after, Democrats and liberals began attacking George W. Bush for his seven minutes of silence at a Florida elementary school. Coincidentally, Obama took 16 hours to make a decision to take out Osama Bin Laden, a man who was responsible for the death of 3,000 Americans. Obama had to "sleep on the decision."

Let's put Pelosi under the microscope. In September 2006, Pelosi working to weaken Bush to take over the House of Representatives, Pelosi states, "Even if [Osama bin Laden] is caught tomorrow, it is five years too late. He has done more damage the longer he has been out there. But, in fact, the damage that he has done . . . is done. And even to capture him now I don’t think makes us any safer.

Now that Obama killed Osama, Pelosi has something quite different to say as Obama seeks reelection.

"The death of Osama bin Laden marks the most significant development in our fight against al-Qaida. . . . I salute President Obama, his national security team, Director Panetta, our men and women in the intelligence community and military, and other nations who supported this effort for their leadership in achieving this major accomplishment. . . . The death of Osama bin Laden is historic."

                  ------------

Thank God this woman is out of majority power...

This is what McCain,Bush and Palin said about Obama's willingness to attack Bin Laden in Pakistan:

In 2008, Bush, McCain and Palin All Blasted Obama’s Willingness to Strike Terrorist Targets in Pakistan

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, close to clinching the GOP nomination, called Sen. Barack Obama ‘naive’ today and…blasted him for advocating a bombing of Al Qaeda hide-outs in Pakistan,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Sarah Palin’s pointed criticism of Barack Obama’s foreign policy agenda Tuesday morning included a swipe at Obama’s stated commitment to strike at terrorists inside Pakistan’s borders if they are in the sights of the American military.

“Senator Obama has also advocated sending our U.S. military into Pakistan without the approval of the Pakistani government,” Palin said. “Invading the sovereign territory of a troubled partner in the war against terrorism.”---SP

Appearing today on Fox News Sunday, President Bush laid into Sen. Barack Obama, claiming he would “attack Pakistan” and “embrace” Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“I certainly don’t know what he believes in,” Bush said when asked if there had been a “rush to judgment” about Obama. “The only foreign policy thing I remember he said was he’s going to attack Pakistan and embrace Ahmadinejad.”---GWB

They are all singing a different tune today hoosier and raven rog even some to the point of giving all the credit to George W. Bush for vthe killing of Bin Laden.

Consider this, the fact that the story seems to change may be due to the fact that the media is rushing to report and not verifying things before they report them. It's a problem I see a lot and it reminds me of Max Headroom - where the ratings were more important than the truth.

How about you guys and Tora Bora, digdoug? Why does no one believe there was any fog of war there? That Rummy, Bush, Cheney, Franks, and other officers who said at the time, at the time, that is, that they were in no way certain it was bin Ladin there, are all lying. Not that it's all the fog of war, but no, liberals insist they are all lying.

No mean spirit with you guys, ever, is there? Not when one believes with every cell of their body that they are both intellectually and morally superior. It's never mean-spiritedness with y'all. Can't be. Not when you're always right. When occasionally a liberal is wrong, which is highly rare, only the mean-spirited will bring it up.

Yes, CoolSlaw, I most definitely do. My opinion of Obama has gone way up, too, even though I don't feel he did much differently than any former president would've done given the same intel, but he said in the debate that that's what he would do and he did it.

What I don't understand, never have and never will understand, is why the Left is silent on the same kinds of things they'd be yelping and screaming about had it been Bush, for whom most liberals if asked could not name one thing they think Bush did right. Not one. Not even the money he sent to Africa for helping Aids. Not for removing Saddam. Tora Bora gets no 'Fog of War' excuse from anyone here. Bush was never allowed a "Fog of War" excuse from the media or anyone on the Left, ever. But Obama, that's a different story. Why is that? I know hypocrisy is germane to the belief system, but why can't a strong belief in principles override that with you guys?

              I don't get it.

                Not one.

Actually "the money he sent to Africa for helping Aids" is considered by many liberals, except rabid partisans, to be one of the few things Bush did do right. Bush is not given credit for capturing/killing Osama because he was 10 years too late.

                Not for removing Saddam

Because the reason for removing Saddam was based on lies. We did not go to Iraq for "nation building". Saddam had no connection to 9/11 nor did he have any WMD (which by the way, we gave to him). And the fact we went after Saddam is the reason why bin Laden is dead now and not 8 years ago.

I know hypocrisy is germane to the belief system, but why can't a strong belief in principles override that with you guys?

Hypocrisy is fitting to what belief system in consideration? Goddammit stop using words because they make you sound smart. Seriously.

Johaely, I know the talking points. Thanks though, that was very helpful to hear them for the 10,000th time. Really, you have no idea how refreshing it is to hear that Bush lied to get us into war, on a liberal blog of all places, where I'd least expect to hear it.

You're really, really good at this, you know?

So the reason Bush's approval rating somehow started tanking after the war in Iraq proved to be unnecessary was because of the evul liberal media? Saddam was not important. If he really was interested in stopping a murderous dictator he could have helped stop or reduce the Sudan genocide, which was occurring parallel to the Iraq war.

The reason why Bush was unpopular (and that's an understatement) would take forever to write down, but one thing for sure is, its that he was considered a very incompetent. Screwed up 9/11, screwed up Afghanistan, screwed up No Child Left Behind, screwed up Iraq, screwed up Katrina, screwed the economy...

This is the absolute last place I would've expected to hear those kinds of things.

And it's like you can just reel them off from memory, too, not like it's rote at all, but like you're teaching a class of students hanging on your every word.

hoosier you don't know me and I resent your condescending post to me. To me it is a reflection of your racist attitude and i don't throw that word around lightly. i've experienced it enough in my life to know it when i see it. I saw it in your post to me telling me I thought I was entitled to things because of my skin color. I saw it in your post defending Trump accusing Obama of taking a college position away from a more qualified white person through AA. I saw it the post you plagirized from another racist that found it's way onto another bircher/birther/racist website :

St. Louis Tea Party Leader AGAIN Promotes Racist Websites
                        Your text to link here...

I see through you hoosier. You are a tea-baging bircher/birther/racist and that is really sad to see in the 21st century but not surprising. Racist like you really don't change they just become a little slicker in their approach. You've learned like Lee Atwater said:

All you have to do to keep the South is for Reagan to run in place on the issues he's campaigned on since 1964 and that's fiscal conservatism, balancing the budget, cut taxes, you know, the whole cluster.

Questioner: But the fact is, isn't it, that Reagan does get to the Wallace voter and to the racist side of the Wallace voter by doing away with legal services, by cutting down on food stamps?

Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, "N***er, n***er, n***er." By 1968 you can't say "***er" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "N***er, n***er."[6][7]Your text to link here...

That is exactly what you and you are not fooling me.

Congero, I'm not kidding, 95% of what you wrote is incomprehensible. The 5% of what I think I can comprehend is incorrect and not supported by facts, and is you merely wishing to project your racial defensiveness and anger you feel for Obama at his deserved criticism onto me for criticizing him. I voted for him in our primary. I admire the man greatly for a lot of things. I have no qualms about saying what those are. It is fact that I did not mention your race when I said you felt you were entitled to anything, because I did not know your race. I don't care what your race is on a blog, you are just a name. I never said Obama took a qualified position away from another person because of AA; I don't even know if AA was involved in his getting in to Harvard. I simply don't understand why Obama's college grades can't be revealed by him when we saw the last president's grades and the grades of the two chumps that he defeated as comparison. That's not racism, congero. It's easy to make that charge as a political argument, but it's no less the low road than it is for you to repeat Atwater's statement as proof that everything on the conservative side is all about the Southern Strategy and de fact racism. You can call anything racism, and you are someone who does, an no, you are lying when you say you don't make that charge lightly. You do because you don't have the intellectual capacity to make any other kind of meaningful argument. That reality has nothing to do with your race, either.

That was what you countered with to me when I accused you of racism. I guess your way of saying I have black friends too. Oh yea I konw you said you didn't know I was AA...lol.

You'll defend Donald Trump as he dog whistles about AA. Thats the way racism works today in the 21st century. You can copy and paste till the cows come home, but you still can't formulate a clear argument to save your life. What story? What's your point? I can't answer a non-question. Only you can tell us what "Obama's story" means, because it's locked in your head. Until then, your question is a mystery. After explaining that, you need to tell us what about this untold story keeps changing. After that, you then need to explain why this matters.

Like congero6189599 asked, [what] do you think?

The art part is the creative process of propaganda in which an elaborate tapestry of lies is woven together. The mills that produce the threads for this tapestry of lies are the blogs, FOX NEWS, hate AM radio, rightwing papers etc.

The science part of lie making is testing how best to bind together different elements within a string of lies based on a unified theory of BS. An important process is converting the energy from a single-celled lie into a reliable power source that can be breathe life into Historical Fabrications or HFs. HFs are the life blood for today's rightwing in America.

        It can's be stressed enough.

The republican party and right wing leadership has no intention of doing what is right for America. At this time they exist almost exclusively as a mechanism to further aristocracy and corporate deregulation. The message and methodology is ultimately destructive to average Americans and the end result will weaken or possibly destroy the middle class.

This is why they've created this multi billion dollar media apparatus.

The right wing media exists as only a tool for complete and unwavering promotion of the republican party power base. The truth is merely an inconvenience to be done away with when feasible.

Keeping all this mind, the job of the typical right wing media pundit is to ALWAYS FIND NEGATIVES about the opposing party, even if it means attacking U.S. armed forces men and women, or raising questions about the legitimacy of a very serious and important mission that resulted in the elimination of the leader of the world's most notorious terrorist organization.

Now, keep this in mind. Fox news and the regulars of right wing media, are willing to raise these doubts, they are willing to play these kinds of games over matters of international and American security. They have no credibility, and if they are willing to lie about matters this important in order to keep their uninformed viewers and listeners on the party line, then how far are they really willing to go?

      Deliberate when...

      1) mission success was not assured?
      2) US soldiers, and potential innocent civilians, lives on the line?
      3) likely international backlash if he were wrong?
      4) weighing strike options and target verification?

. . .the treasure trove of computer information; hard drives, disks, laptops, logs would have been destroyed had they bombed immediately from the air.

and the usual collateral civilian damage was avoided.

That computer info was invaluable, maybe worth more than Bin Laden

Rename the Republican party to the White party, emphasize the talking point that, not counting the sitting president, our country's most successful leaders were all white, and offer tax breaks to upper middle class and above, cause they earned it, by damn!

BUT HE GOT HIM! Not only that but he managed to plan it so he could minimalize civilian casualties, keep Bin Laden's body in great condition so it could be identified and get high quality intelligence from all the possible files in his hideout. An airstrike would have wiped out all that evidence and make us look stupid in front of Pakistan and perhaps the world.

At the end of the day, Bin Laden is still dead. And with minimal damage in the operation having occured. And yet that doesn't satisfy FOX. If Obama during the 16 hours went to the bathroom or took a short smoke outside, they will attack him for it. I don't blame Obama. So many things could go wrong in the operation and it would be a disasterous diplomatic event. But despite those 16 hours, the operation went as planned.

It just damns me that even the fright-wing media would even oppose Obama when he got Bin Laden, who they considered the greatest enemy in the world and not going after him means you're pro-terrorism. Obama could run into a burning orphanage and save all the children inside and the right-wingers would throw a billion conspiracies on us.

This country will not be brought low by outside terrorists, but by our own "Real" Amurikans. Fox and the News Corporation are the ones to watch. The real danger is that none of them can ever be brought to trial for treason, thanks to our own constitution, a fact that is not lost on them. The only bright side is if Obama wins the next election by a landslide, resulting in group apoplexy.

I congratulate him for finally showing the balls to do something. Unfortunately, immediately after the decision and the conclusion of the mission, someone in the whitehouse lost their balls and couldn't get the story straight. Back to square one.

Because he is a lousy president who has contradicted everything he said he was going to do when he ran for office. I believe the perception of America by other countries has been diminished by his presidency, he lacks true leadership, and he was too inexperienced when elected to deserve the job. I have been around a long time unfortunately, and americans have always had a history of resilience and a positive attitude. Since he took office, the mood in this country is the worst and most negative I have ever perceived, from the garbage men to the corporate executives I know. He does nothing to inspire the country, looks as though he is talking down to us, and I have never trusted someone who always wants to blame "that guy" (Bush), for all his shortcomings and problems. Grab the mantle and lead and quit whining. He abandoned any form of partisanship when he took office, and now he wants to know why republicans don't want to work with him. You make you bed, you lie in it. Any other questions.

And on the way out. Combat troops have been pulled out.

America IS the best thing since sliced bread,

Umm not really. We are a very flawed country with our biggest one being our fear and overall laziness. We have a very easily manipulated government, our standard of living is not the highest despite our healthcare being the most expensive in the world; we have practically the whiniest populace and we have such an obsession with trivial matters that our media is more interested in getting ratings than in reporting news.

And somehow that's the attitude that makes the world love america right? You said Obama has made the world have a negative perception of America yet somehow by not being a cocky jerk that demands the world to heed America's call he has made it worse.

you and your hispanic heritage needs to recognize that.

Don't know how is that relevant, but i actually speak both. Not only that I am very appreciative of the world and languages and at the moment i'm learning French and Japanese. Far more than you likely know.

Not really. It's more like an upper average country. Like i said there is always room for a lot of improvement.

...and people who come here for something other than the free emergency room care, the food stamps and the ability to send money back to the motherland...

What about them? You didn't finish. Besides i don't see how the existence of Western Union is

I for one am sick of people like you who hate everything american, but will take all the freebies and handouts and expect more.

I don't hate everything American. Hell i really don't hate anything. I just get very annoyed at people with such thin skin like yours and a fascist sense of jingoism. I enjoy the food even if its bad for you; the people who are friendly and have open minds; the musical traditions; the native cultures; the natural landscapes; the fauna and flora and the cities.

Learning more languages is good, use them in the land where they come from and leave america alone.

So then why are speaking English and not Iroquoian, Wakashawan, Adai, Haida or any other native language. Oh and sign language, because really those are the only "true" american languages. And even then, you should be talking Spanish since the Spaniards came first.

But what is your fear about learning another language? Afraid of becoming less American?

America used to be a melting pot. Now it's a country of fruits and nuts that want to make it like their homeland.

But kid (i know you are older than me, but your level of maturity says otherwise), guess what. The times, they are a' changing. The world is not far away anymore and people don't have to shed their identity and blood just because they are in a new land. If you were living in a foreign country i bet you would be demanding fireworks on the 4th of July, that stores be open on May 1st and that people only speak English to you.

Don't ever critize me again, you impudent foreign pos, you shouldn't be allowed in this country if that's your attitude.

First of all I'm not foreign. Second generation, with two foreign parents, yes, foreign, not really. I was born here in good old U.S.A. NYC (you know, that horrible vestigial waste of mass that harbors the UN and is the jewel in the crown of the seeping multiculturalism that is going to kill the U.S.). But either way, nowhere in the constitution say that you can't criticize America or question its judgement.

You insult me by being here.

Don't really care. To be honest I actually enjoy causing a racist xenophobe distress just by my mere existence.

And thanks for the english lesson, your spell check works.

Uh, spell check does not work with grammar. Spell check considers "Your correct, I..." to be correct since "your" is correctly spelled.

Thanks for the reply, i'm not gonna rant anymore. I get very upset over people that complain about this country, especially when on a website of libs. You seem to be able to carry your water very well, thanks for the repartee and have a good day. Always enjoy a good battle of wits. And by the way, I suck at languages, admittedly, but my son is fluent in spanish, pashto and farsi, unfortunately it must have something to do with his mother, cause it ain't me babe. No one is asking people to shed their heritage, but like my own German and friends' italian, puerto rican and other heritages from the 50-60's, acclaimate. And I love New York, stinking refuse pit that it is.

The success of this mission required the cover of darkness, did it not?

I've seen reports that have said the raid took place at about 1:30 AM.

Sixteen hours earlier would have been 9:30 AM. Bright and early in the morning.

If it turned out like Blackhawk Down, they'd all be ranting that O jumped into it without thinking it through. I believe their playbook reads if something appears successful it is either because W did it, Dick set the course, Raygun instituted it or Obama was bypassed. If it fails, then it was O jumping the gun without thinking of the consequences, Clinton gave some advise or Sorros (drink) was involved.

Amazing that Bush had nothing at all to do with the state of our economy 6 months after O was sworn in, but when Bin Laden is killed 2 1/2 years after O is sworn in, it is all due to Bush's actions.

      They are all pure idiots!!!

This may be the nail in their in coffin as only the most ardent foxtards and bigots will trumpet this rubbish. Most people who are in the middle and the smart independents will see all this for what it is. The pres is on a winning streak now and with American morale lifted and some fear has subsided they are going to go out and spend some money. Ah, a leader with the foggiest clue of what he is doing. 16 hours or 16 minutes...it makes no difference to me. The action was correct.

Dump bin Laden's sorry butt in the ocean or bury him in a cave...it makes no difference to me...he's dead and that's what counts.

To me the most critical aspect of the decision making process was Pres. Obama assuming the physical risk to our soldiers and the possible political fallout with Pakistan by sending in the SEAL team. According to reports we were able to lay our hands on multiple computers and hard drives that should produce reams of intelligence...intelligence that would have been obliterated with a surgical bomb strike.

I find no fault at all with the action taken by Pres. Obama...he did the duty that his office requires in defense of our nation.

-- Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are: one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Thank you. May God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America. -- Pres. Obama

So now they're criticizing him for taking time to make decision? I don't really see the problem, as he is putting Americans' lives in harms way. Plus, Bin Laden has been holed up there for like 5 years, chances are he wasn't leaving in that 16 hour window. Plus, I thought he didn't make the decision. I thought he was overruled by the military. These nutbags have gone straight from ridiculous speed to ludicrous speed.

See what you get when your government lies about the gulf of tonkin, Pat Tillman and the assassination of JFK? Now Americans actually demand evidence before believing this or that. I personally cannot sort out what's true and what's yet another lie; so in that case, i prefer to see evidence for everything. Release the photo.

I'm taking the POTUS' word on this one. If it weren't true, OBL would just release a video tape and make us look like idiots. Obama isn't stupid. He wouldn't claim Osama was dead unless he was damn sure of it. This isn't like the Gulf of Tonkin or Pat Tillman. Those are reasonably easy to cover up. This isn't. They will release a photo, but it makes no difference. People are already howling about how his birth certificate must have been photoshopped. You really think that any photo of OBL would elicit a different response? Conspiracies don't rely on evidence. If they did, they wouldn't exist. Conspiracy theorists don't want the truth, they want what they think to be the truth.

I think the greatest leverage against the idea that OBL is still alive is the fact that he hasn't come out and said "GOTCHA!" If he's proven anything over the last while, it's that he knows how to get a hold of Al-Jazeera. Were I him, there wouldn't be anything in the world I'd rather do than bring the euphoria of the American citizens to a crushing defeat.

Just like you don't need to physically put your hands on Obama's birth certificate to know that it's real - Factcheck.org did that for you - members of Congress could see the photo without it being publicly published.

That's what Obama should do - show photos to Republican leaders in Congress. Then we'd see if they'd behave in a morally reasonable way and they'd tell the public that the photos were of Osama bin Laden.

I'm not even sure what you mean by that. What am I projecting? Onto whom? Am I misidentifying the message of Jesus, or am I poorly characterizing Republicans? Here's some direct contradictions, if they'll clarify.
Jesus said that "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." Somehow Republicans who claim to be Christian are adamantly against tax cuts for the wealthy. They defend their wealth to the end, even though their beliefs say that they wealth is worthy of damnation.
Jesus says to love your neighbor (and enemies) and turn the other cheek. So when Glenn Beck says "you're going to have to shoot them in the head," I cannot help but see this as the opposite of Christianity.
The fact that almost half of Republicans don't believe Obama was born in the United States and is a Muslim is a testament to their perpetual dishonesty. One of the Ten Commandments is "Thou shall not bear false witness."
When was the last time you heard a Democrat talk about how illegal immigrants were beheading Americans? That one captures both fear and dishonesty, while inciting intolerance.
The only issues that the right can claim to be holier on are abortion and gay marriage, and even then the latter is debatable.

I'm sure God's up there worrying about tax cuts for the people that pay 90% off all the taxes now. But, just to let you know, I believe people making over a million bucks a year can afford a little higher tax rate, especially how things are now. I also believe that our exalted ruler could have cleared this stupid birth certificate thing up a long ago but decided to let it fester for some unknown reason. And that act of hiding the original birth certificate didn't help gain the confidence of those on the right. Where did the beheading b.s. come from, never heard that one. Your post is quite confusing with what sounds like talking points from some of the folks here that like to spread rumor and innuendo without facts. Maybe a little homework is in order, bendover. Me thinks you may be confusing the facts.

Here's an old poll, but still indicative of the dishonesty of Republicans.

And here's my data on those stupid birthers.

Me thinks you may be trolling. My facts are straighter than a closeted Republican.

And perhaps after addressing it initially he felt it was stupid to lend credence by acknowledging the ridiculous rumors about his birth. He felt the need to clear it up recently, and he didn't hide it. He just didn't release it. Not the same thing.

A bit OT, but that picture on the front shot is just worth a thousand words. Beautifully done.

And the abuse of grammatical structure. "The far left are"astounded by centerRight's lack of subject-verb agreement.

Well I don't know, maybe it has something to do with using America's fear of terrorism to lie us into a war with someone who insulted his daddy.
It could be that he tricked congress into sending Wall Street billions of dollars so they could go party.
No.... I think mainly it's about his economic policies that Obama was blackmailed into extending causing the recession that we're just now (or were until the republicans took back the congress) slowly crawling out of

I don't hate Bush. I don't like Bush, but I definitely don't hate him. I don't think he was the worst president but I do think he is down there. I voted for him twice but had I known his presidency would have led to the GOP of today, I probably would have voted otherwise.

President Obama would be crucified and Bush would not even be mentioned if the mission had failed.

Dana Loesch published a detailed account of the assult on Lara Logan to compare progressives going after teabaggers in Wisconsin to her attackers.

Ms. Logan's own account proves Ms. Loesch's version was very wrong. Not to mention in remarkably poor taste.

Has she apologized for her error? Nope.

Yeah, and if the mission went wrong quiet tom, Bush would have been blamed, and them Obama would have pushed the mistake down hill. He would have blamed the military commanders and Hillary for pressuring him into the decision and he would have used the 16 hour tape delay as an excuse for trying to figure out how not to follow "their lead." And the left wing press would be in rapture as always, hanging Hillary and the military and giving the exulted one another pass.

You are a LIAR. You just think everyone is as lacking in basic decency as you are. You just cant imagine that everyone isnt the pathetic brainwashed LIAR you are.

The left press does not exist. Only the stupidest most brainwashed people in existance believe in it unless you are talking about the Nation magazine or Z magazine. GOD but you are so pitiful it is sad.

You truly are delusional. Your projection of your failed OBL raid fantasy cements your insecurity. You should stand up and be the poster boy for whatever wing of whatever political group you are trying to emulate. Help me out!

These Right Wing nuts just make me mad. Seriously, Bush The Elder took his time to build a coalition when he decided to help Kuwait and that's the thing that you have to do: make a lot of deliberate decisions. You can't just let your emotions rule the day because an emotional person might have decided that the best course was to bomb the compound and hope that he was there. Obama took the time to figure out what the best course of action was and he was decisive about it. Now, if it had taken him 16 days instead of 16 hours then I might have questioned it but while it did give them a slight chance for them to sniff out the surveillance, it also allowed us more time to get an idea of whether he was in there or not. Instead of whining about whether he was too deliberate, the Right should be congratulating him for finishing the job and show the patriotism that they kept pushing the Left to show under W (BTW, that bitter taste in your mouths, Righties, is what crow tastes like).

Awww...poor Hilary looks like she's gonna throw up!

President done did good tho. Realize no matter who was in office, they would have had to make the same decision! Would MM FS's be on a Republican President's side? Don't think so!

I will give credit to Obama for this one issue, all others he fails at, can't wait to see him gone in 2012 and what MM FS's will be saying then...........

Can't stand to listen to you MM FS's, you make blood shoot out of my eyes so I'll be back in a few weeks, month, whenever? AMF....
