Fox News Cooks Up Campaign Contribution Out Of Fund That Can't Fund Campaigns

July 07, 2011 12:44 am ET — 16 Comments

Fox News has fabricated the claim that a $10 annual fee approved by the National Education Association (NEA) for the next five years will be used to fund President Obama's re-election campaign. But the fee is intended to combat anti-union ballot initiatives and cannot be used to support campaigns.

Fox Falsehood: $10 Fee Will Go To President Obama's Re-Election Campaign

Fox's Bolling: The Fee Is A "10-Buck Bump In Dues Per Member To Be Used To Re-Elect President Obama." On the July 5 edition of Follow The Money, Eric Bolling stated:

BOLLING: That was Joe Biden from the NEA teachers convention in Chicago over the weekend. The teachers mega union so smitten with Joe B. and the liberal left, they agreed to a 10-buck bump in dues per member to be used to re-elect President Obama. Let me see: three million teachers, 10 bucks a piece, 30 million reasons for big Joe to spend the Fourth in Chicago. Tony, I'm not sure I want my teachers so involved--Why is the NEA--It's more a political movement than a teachers union. [Fox Business, Follow The Money with Eric Bolling, 7/5/11]

Fox: "Union Members Taxed $10 To Front Re-Election." During the July 5 edition of Fox & Friends, the following graphic appeared on screen:

FACT: The Fund Is Geared Toward Fighting Anti-Union Ballot Initiatives And Cannot Support Campaigns

The Chicago Tribune Reported The Increase Was Approved "Specifically To Confront State And Local Efforts To Limit Collective Bargaining Rights." The Chicago Tribune reported that the National Education Association "approved a $10 per-member fee increase for the next five years, specifically to confront state and local efforts to limit collective bargaining rights for many public workers as has happened in Wisconsin and Ohio, [NEA President Dennis] Van Roekel said." [Chicago Tribune, 7/5/11]

Education Week: "These Fund Can't Support Campaigns." According to Education Week's Teacher Beat blog, delegates to the National Education Association's Representative Assembly "approved the amendment to the bylaws that authorize the $10-per-member annual assessment, 60 percent of which will be used primarily to support the Ballot Measure/Legislative Crisis fund, and the other 40 percent for national and state media campaigns. These funds can't support campaigns but can support messaging and action against things like anti-collective bargaining legislation. [Education Week, Teacher Beat, 7/4/11, emphasis added]

Bolling is clearly delusional... The NEA would never have caved for a mere Biden appearance.

Seriously though, the lower FOX banner is something that Politifact should comb over. It's a nice, ignorant, ludicrous claim . Knowing them, though, they'd still give it a 'Barely True' with some horrid backdoor justification instead of just calling it out for what FOX obviously is trying to say it is.

How can this group of reporters, journalist (?!) and commentators live with themselves? Day after day repeating lie after lie, distortion after distortion.
The very sad part is that loyal fox viewers ( and, unfortunately, there a LOTS of these) don't watch any other news and believe that the information they hear/read on fox is the absolute truth. In this case - "how DARE those teachers take MY money and support that Kenyan born Muslim?!"

Everyone at Fox must really suck at doing research. They are good at coming up with wild theories but extremely bad at verifying them before they report them as "news". Of course, we all know that truthful reporting isn't their objective.

Wonder how much they will spend on the re-election campaign of Obama? "National and state media campaigns" will have nothing to do with trying to re-elect him and I'm sure the rest will be in a "lock box".

It doesnt matter how much they will spend. You arent sure of anything other than what you have been told to think. Try to maintain a bit of coherence.

This is the problem with MMFA during the summer. The children are out of school. Go to the park and play, child. They will appreciate your, "I know you are but what am I?", retort; we just find it childish.

Fox knows this is BS. Obama hasn't even done a heck of a lot for unions. They are just launching a pre emptive assault on the unions right to get their message out.

They're not just attacking unions; they're also attacking education, science, critical thinking, and anything else that would allow people to make informed decisions about Republican policies. They have no interest in the welfare of most of their followers; instead they only want to increase the wealth and power of those who are already incredibly wealthy and powerful at the expense of everybody else. Their policies are actively harmful to most people, including most Republicans. They openly say that education is "elitist" as if competence and knowledge are bad things. And their followers swallow this load whole without examining their own beliefs because they are more comfortable with talking points than with reality.

Is there anything in the actual bylaws that forbids the use of the money for a purpose other than what it is ostensibly collected for?
Just an emphasized statement doesn't make it so.

Can we then say that Fox directly funded Newt's election campaign when he was a "contributor"?
