September 30, 2011 1:15 pm ET — 175 Comments

Right-wing media have attacked Michelle Obama for going shopping at Target, claiming she went " 'incognito,' Lady Gaga-style" and asking, "Who does she think she's fooling?" Right-wing media have previously attacked the first lady for everything from promoting health initiaitves to wearing a red dress at a state dinner.

Michelle Obama Visits Target ...

Washington Post: "Hey Isn't That...? Michelle Obama At Target." From a September 29 post on The Washington Post's Reliable Sources blog:

Michelle Obama shopping at Target Thursday. An AP photographer (small world!) happened upon the first lady at the Alexandria store, pushing a cart and carrying bags.

Michelle Obama Target

Michelle Obama, center, with an unidentified aide -- we're assuming, anyway. Who else would be working two BlackBerrys at Target? [The Washington Post, 9/29/11, emphasis original]

... And The Right-Wing Media Attack

Limbaugh: "It Has Gotten So Bad, They Had To Send Moochelle Out There In A Lady Gaga-Type Getup. She Went Shopping At Target." During the September 30 edition of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show, Limbaugh said: "It has gotten so bad, they had to send Moochelle out there in a Lady Gaga-type getup. She went shopping at Target." [Premiere Radio Networks, The Rush Limbaugh Show, 9/30/11, via Media Matters]

Malkin: Obama Went To Target "About As 'Incognito' As Lady Gaga." In a September 29 blog post, Michelle Malkin attacked Obama for shopping at Target, writing that Obama was "about as 'incognito' as Lady Gaga's outfit at her younger sister's graduation." Malkin went on to call the first lady "the glamour queen" and further stated that Obama's Target visit was "[t]o counter the negative diva buzz" and that it "[l]ooks like she left the bling at home." [MichelleMalkin.com, 9/29/11, via Media Matters]

The Blaze: "What Luck!" Obama "Wasn't Snapped Without Make-Up, With Messy Hair Wearing Sweatpants To Do Her 'Everywoman' Shopping." A September 30 post on The Blaze stated:

Our First Lady has sooome luck. Not only is her hubby the leader of the free world, but just as the Obama camps [sic] is desperately looking for a way to relate to America's Average Joes, a staff photographer with the Associated Press just so happened to be there to document her recent Target shopping jaunt.

[...]

What luck! Obama also wasn't snapped without make-up, with messy hair wearing sweatpants to do her "everywoman" shopping... like some of us who will remain nameless.

Exit question: I could see a quick stop in at the local Target store as something that might happen out on the campaign trail.  But who really believes Michelle Obama left the White House to pop in at the Alexandria, Va., Target because the East Wing ran out of paper towels? [The Blaze, 9/30/11, emphasis in original]

Weasel Zippers: "Honestly, Who Does She Think She's Fooling?" A September 29 Weasel Zippers post titled, "Pic of the Day," stated, "See, Mooch is just like us!" and showed a photograph of the first lady at Target. The post went on to ask, "Honestly, who does she think she's fooling?" [Weasel Zippers, 9/29/11]

Beck And Co-Hosts Mock Obama For Going To Target. On his September 30 radio program, Glenn Beck and his co-hosts mocked Obama for going to Target and asked, "Did you see the agonizing photos of Michelle Obama as a Target shopper?" [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 9/30/11]

Right-Wing Media Figures Have Consistently Attacked Michelle Obama

Right-Wing Lip Readers' Michelle Obama Derangement Syndrome. Following a ceremony on the 10th anniversary of 9-11, various right-wing blogs and The Washington Times claimed that Michelle Obama likely disparaged the American flag during a memorial ceremony. [Media Matters, 9/14/11]

Washington Examiner Blamed Obama's "Let's Move!" Campaign For Pedestrian Deaths. A January Washington Examiner story claimed that the first lady's "Let's Move!" campaign could be linked to an increase in pedestrian deaths. The Washington Examiner article was later promoted by numerous right-wing media outlets. [Media Matters, 1/20/11]

For the truth behind The Washington Examiner's article, SEE HERE.

Wash. Times: Michelle Obama "Doesn't Seem All That Happy With The Man She Married 19 Years Ago." In an August 28 Washington Times op-ed, Joseph Curl wrote that Michelle Obama "doesn't seem all that happy with the man she married 19 years ago." Curl also asked, "Man, how miserable is Michelle Obama?" [The Washington Times, 8/29/11, via Media Matters]

The Blaze Claimed "Michelle Obama Might Have Taken The 'Happy' Out Of McDonald's Happy Meals." A July 26 post on The Blaze stated:

A child could once feel excitement over hearing a parent utter those beautiful words: "honey, we're going to McDonald's for a Happy Meal." But those carefree days are over and that sense of childhood wonderment and abandon is about to be seriously curbed by a new McDonald's policy that cuts an order of fries in half, throws apple slices, raisins and pineapple chunks around as if they were ketchup, and just generally makes Happy Meals "healthier," and, less happy. And even though the apples are reportedly not well-received by customers, guess what? McDonald's is forcing the fruit in its Happy Meals anyway. Whether you want it or not.

And what's more, politics, perhaps even the White House itself, could be to blame.

[...]

So after all the years of satisfied customers "lovin' it," it is political pressure, including First Lady Michelle Obama's war on childhood obesity, that reportedly forced McDonald's hands.

[...]

McDonald's: another casualty in the Nanny State's war on personal choice, or is the fast food giant bringing this on themselves? Will the new, and perhaps not improved, McDonald's menu affect your decision to patronize the long-time burger institution? [The Blaze, 7/26/11, via Media Matters]

For the truth about McDonald's decision to make its Happy Meals healthier, SEE HERE.

Right-Wing Media Spun "Help From The Media" Comment About Obama Children To Suggest Media Bias.  The Drudge Report and Andrew Breitbart's Big Journalism both attacked Michelle Obama's statement during a CNN interview that "we have help from the media" to suggest media bias. Obama was actually thanking the media for respecting her children's privacy. [Media Matters, 6/25/11]

Right-Wing Media Stooped To Suggesting Michelle Obama Is Fat.  Rush Limbaugh and other right-wing media figures rallied against Obama's "Let's Move!" fitness and nutrition campaign by attacking her eating habits and calling her fat. [Media Matters, 2/14/11, 2/21/11]

Right-Wing Media Attacked Obama's Dress Choice For State Dinner. Right-wing media attacked Obama for wearing a red dress to a White House state dinner, suggesting she did so to honor "Commie Red China." [Media Matters, 1/20/11]

Despite believing that CO2 emissions contribute to global warming, the Obamas still breath, thus putting more CO2 into the atmosphere.

Michelle went to Target for one reason & one reason only.

As a PR stunt for her miserable failure of a husband.

If you for one second think it was to "pick up a few things" for the White House then you are one of the following:

            1. A drooling moron who needs help flipping a light switch

            2. A drooling moron & liberal-socialist Obama bumlicker

            3. A drooling moron PR stooge for Obama moonlighting on MediaMatters trying to convince people that Michelle went to Target to "pick up a few things" for the White House.

It just proves how desperate the Buffoon in Chief is, using his wife as a prop. Obama has failed at everything else as prez so why not with pathetic & sad PR stunts.

            Obama's worthlessness knows no bounds.

Tell me, do you really think Michelle was sitting at the White House & spontaneously said "tell the Secret Service to sweep the local Target, I have to pick up some toiletries I just realized I needed. Pull the armored plated limo around as I'll be ready to go in a half an hour or so after I write out my shopping list".

The White House has a 24/7 staff to provide everything for Mr & Mrs Prez. Michelle has at least 20 people on her official staff and who knows how many people working at the White House to serve her needs.

So honestly, do you really think this was anything other than a PR stunt?

Yes, there was some evil insidious reason for why Michelle Obama wen to Target. It could not have been simply that she needed to go to the store to get something herself. No it was a PR stunt. that's why she went covered.

Don't you see what you are doing? You are making this bigger than what it is. If Michelle Obama had sent an aide you would have said that its just proof of how she is the new Marie Antoinette and how lazy she and uppity she is.

If you want, you can call anything the 1st family does outside of the White House a PR stunt because the media will cover it whether they want to be seen or not. Some of you will not be happy until this 1st family is out of the White House. That is your problem not theirs.Do YOU honestly beieve what you have written?!Just admit that they can do nothing to please your biased mind!!!

The dittoheads hate that Michelle Obama went to Target because they would rather she went to Wal-Mart. Target treats their employees well, and contributes to progressive causes. Wal-Mart locks their night-shift employees in the stores overnight (or used to, before they were sued about it).

And we Liberals don't understand satire when we hear it, so all the homophobic or racist "dittoheads" who call in to affirm their shared beliefs are Liberals, too? Does that mean that he secretly agrees with the occasional Liberal who gets through and that he proceeds to trash on the air? Limbaugh is about as funny as a Klan rally....or do you think those folks are just being comedic, too?

The problem with toxic talkers like Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity, and Beck is not the stupidity of the talkers, it's the gullibility and righteous indignation that it provokes in their listeners. Rightwingers hate Michael Moore, but name just one crazy Liberal who tried to go to a bank or a banker's house to do them harm because they'd just seen one of his movies. When Ed, Keith, Lawrence, and Rachel wind up their followers, they don't go to the Capitol to shout at the Congressmen, they volunteer to help out at free clinics or they donate money to Indian Reservations or to buy desks for children in Africa.

No,the problem is that many conservatives swallow this stupid Limbaugh garbage and repeat it as facts.I see it every day on blogs, letters to the editorial pages of newspapers and sadly on Fox News.Others know it is garbage and are disgusted that so many just belive it and use it to disparage the Obamas.Limbaugh,Savage,Malkin,etc. will make an outrageous claim and it will become Fox's famous "some are saying" Obama blah blah attack that will be featured all day long as if it's news. They will also invite these people or their listeners to just come on the air and spout the same type of garbage from conservative talk radio/blogs.I'm sure another edition of Orly Taiz "fake Birth Certificate" will come up soon. How about another NRA 2nd ammendment conspiracy about the President.
There is a lot of dangerous fear mongering, racism and disrespect to the Obama's from Limbaugh and he is accountable to no one.You know that Fox and others would have been livid if Laura Bush were attacked the way Mrs Obama is by Limbaugh and his ilk.Is this what America should be about, who can be the most petty and most insulting to the 1st family regardless of facts. How does that help the country? Isn't there a better way to use public airways?

Yep. Limbaugh is extremely lucky that President Obama isn't the Hitler-esque thug he frequently paints him to be. I can only speak for myself, but if anyone talked about my wife the way Limbaugh talks about Mrs. Obama, that person would find himself toothless and prostrate. I gotta think (knowing myself as I do) that, if I had Obama's position, that person might find himself in the targeting sights of a Predator drone.

"I never know with you liberals"
Oh, I respectfully disagree. Don't sell yourself short by being modest. You know everything there is to know about liberals...

Liberals always hide what they believe, they want income redistribution, but don't dare it call that so they say "fair share", or some such vague nonsense.

There is no such thing as redistributing money upwards, that is a liberal talking point with no basis in reality.

That perfectly sums up what is wrong with liberal economic thinking: all government spending is good because "No matter what you think of any particular project it's money in peoples pockets"

sure. It's the pharmacists and the religous people's fault for people becoming pregnant, i love liberal thought.

liberals patronize all their special interest groups for they want to feel as though they need them, to remain indebted to them, to keep voting for them.

You don't read people very well, do you? I haven't dealt with you with "raw emotion" I've taken what you said and asked you to expand or clarify your position. That isn't raw emotion, it might be bemusement or condescention on my part, but it isn't raw emotion; it's considered. I don't find what Rush says to be funny, and I don't think he means to be. I think he's seeking affirmation of some very anti-social opinions from his like-minded listeners. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I will support your right to express yours, but I don't have to agree with it, and I might even find it stupid, and I have every right to say so, because it's freedom of expression. But Liberals are much more likely to allow you that freedom of expression than Rightwingers.

                  james,

I agree that many of the liberals haunting the halls of mmfa are wrapped way too tight...bordering on the textbook scenario of catatonic behavior that may involve stupor, negativism, rigidity, purposeless excitement, and inappropriate or bizarre posturing.

But I'll make pete one of the notable exceptions to that type of behavior. Heck I'd even invite him on one of our Friday afternoon beer and wine rides...since the Colonel has dropped out of sight.

Wesley is one of our sadder trolls. He posts things that he is so obviously proud of that he believes bolster his opinion and, nine times out of ten, they do the opposite. He LOVES polls, but doesn't seem to understand how they work.

You are a liar. YOu are also very stupid. Rush plays YOU. Then again that is easy. You are so stupid. He, like Beck, says incredibly incendiary and ridiculous comments. He does that to throw red meat to his moron audience. When called on it they go to...its a joke or its a media tweak. He pretends he is trying to manipulate us while what he is doing is manipulating people as STUPID and gullible as YOU. You are actually moronic enough to buy into this sad defense for the indefensible. You dont even know how badly you humiliate yourself day after day

Hysterical is right, james. It's funny to watch the usual cast of groupies...scurrying from thread to thread...just looking for something to freak over.

They're here every day, on every thread...spewing the same thing. But they sure make it easy to navigate the posts...I just cruise right on by...ignoring their insignificant rants.

They know who they are...but they can't help themselves.

me too, i rarely read the limbaugh tweaks and the comments because how many times can somebody say he's fat or a drug addict or hasn't worked a day in his life or whatever. i imagine he reads them every night over a cigar and a brandy and has a huge belly laugh over it.

kab: I think james played the fear card because con leaders use it to scare their followers into staying in line. By sarcastically pretending you were trying to intimidate Limbaugh, james was making the unconscious assumption that we think the way they do. Of course, we've always known better about what they have always failed to learn.

                      What are "panty waists"?

Limbaugh gets $400 million for what he says.

Great thing about having groupies is you can dump them at a bus depot in the next town when there's a falling out. There's always new ones waiting in line backstage.

Do not presume to lecture us. You are far too stupid. We know what is what and you are a brainwashed moron. You WANT us to ignore the stupidity and vile behavior by Beck and Limbaugh because that fits your agenda. We want to expose it outside the circle of his inbred cretin audience.

Raw stupidity and vile, foul, soullessness fuels conservatism.

When the Obama's buy expensive food, they get called "elitist". When they shop at Target, they are still accused of being "elitist". Only now they are trying to "blend in". I threw up internally when Beck said "let's go shopping" in a clear parody of a stereotypical African-American accent. Glenn is flying his true colors high.

She also knows better than to publicly ask for a license to shoot things. They'd only accuse her of being an angry Black woman about to commit violence. Teh Blahz is promoting a book called "Chicks with Guns". It's a bunch of women with make-up posing with guns and stuffed trophy kills. They think its hot, I think it's a bit creepy.

Yeah, I'm sure Mrs. Obama is scrubbing the kitchen and bathrooms of the WH with the Lysol she bought at target. Come on... even you MMFA people have to recognize how silly this looks. I bet there is some internal polling that says people are getting sick and tired of her taking lavish trips with hundreds of helpers, while the economy is tanking.

Weaselly, it must have been three years ago that I said you had raised missing the point to an art form. The fact that you haven't matured at all in that time is very sad to see.

The point--as if it weren't abundantly obvious to anyone with at least two digits in his IQ--is that there are media figures (who all just happen to share your end of the political spectrum) who are freaking out because the first lady went shopping at Target. This is the non-story to end all non-stories.

So, are you going to defend Limbaugh, Malkin, ad nauseum? No, I didn't think so. Hence, once again, you have no actual point to make. Dismissed.

Limousine Liberals hate rubbing elbows with the great unwashed at Wal-Mart, so they go to Target instead. See? Target may not be fundamentally different than Wal-Mart overall, but for my taste, there's a huge aesthetic difference in Target's favor. I don't feel my intelligence insulted for visiting Target, and it doesn't result in a further net loss to my patriotism, whereas Wal-Mart has become a nearly intolerable shopping experience.
