Right-Wing Media Machine Closes Out 2011 With Attacks On Girl Scouts Of America

December 30, 2011 4:34 pm ET — 150 Comments

The right-wing media closed out 2011 by attacking the Girl Scouts of America for, in the words of Glenn Beck website The Blaze, publishing a book that "refers young readers to Media Matters for America as one of the primary sources for debunking lies and deceit." Fox News led the charge, devoting more than 15 minutes over two days and three programs to the GSA's "liberal ideology," including its purported ties to Planned Parenthood.

Beck Website: "Girl Scouts Book Refers Readers To Liberal Group Media Matters"

The Blaze: Media Matters Reference Is "A Form Of Misinformation, Bias -- Potentially Even Indoctrination." On December 27, Glenn Beck website The Blaze reported:

In 2010, the Girl Scouts of the USA published a book called "MEdia." The publication, designed for girls in grades six through eight, is a guide that apparently offers insight into how young people should process and understand the media messages surrounding them.

Considering the pervasive nature of popular media, this seems like a viable tool. However, there's a problem -- the book refers young readers to Media Matters for America as one of the primary sources for debunking lies and deceit. [...]

The Blaze called the Girl Scouts on Dec. 13 to ask about the book. Spokesperson Michelle Tompkins seemed very familiar with the controversy over the inclusion of Media Matters and said that the organization is re-printing the book this month.

During a follow-up call, Tompkins pledged to answer some e-mail questions we sent over. These particular questions sought answers about how Media Matters came to be placed in the book, who wrote the page that the reference appears on and what group, if any, will replace Media Matters once the new publications are released. To date, we have received no response despite a follow-up voicemail and e-mails.

This story was originally brought to us by Christy Volanski, a concerned parent and a former Girl Scouts leader. Her daughter, Sydney, a 15-year-old who served as a Girl Scout for eight years, left the organization in 2010 after she found that it embraces some controversial stances. Now, Sydney co-edits "Speak Now: Girl Scouts Website," which provides plenty of other examples of what some may see as liberal bias.

Perhaps the Girl Scouts staffers were too busy to respond to us, but considering the fact that the Media Matters reference is, in itself, a form of misinformation, bias -- potentially even indoctrination -- we assumed that the book would no longer be on the market. But we were wrong. [TheBlaze.com, 12/27/11]

Fox News Trumpets Story, Highlights MMFA's "Agenda" To "Destroy Fox News"

Fox & Friends Hosts Attack Media Matters' "Agenda"; Criticize GSA For "Steering Kids The Wrong Way," Alleged "Liberal Bias." In a December 28 segment, Fox & Friends hosts criticized GSA for giving "bad information" by not directing girls to a "non-partisan, objective group," and suggested the Scouts have a "liberal bias" because "the Girl Scouts printed materials refer girls to planned important hood and other pro-abortion groups":

ALISYN CAMEROTA (CO-HOST): The controversial part is they direct girls to Media Matters. Well Media Matters is the group that you've probably heard about on this program that is not nonpartisan. In fact they have an agenda and one of their stated agendas is to destroy Fox News. So the fact that the Girl Scouts are being directed in this guide to sort through the media to Media Matters is very curious because there are nonpartisan, objective groups that also do fact checking that they could have been directed to instead of Media Matters.

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): Right, and it is curious they would direct people, young kids to Media Matters, which is funded in part by George Soros, and you know his history. The publication The Blaze which is also a blog contacted the Girl Scouts and said, "Did you know you are sending kids over to Media Matters which is a lefty blog out there?" And they go, "yeah, we know. And by the way, we are going to reprint the book." Well, will that be in the new book? That blog, the Blaze, has not heard an answer whether or not that bad information about a site that is clearly with an agenda is going to be in the new book because it's steering kids the wrong way. [...]

DOOCY: And this came to the attention of some people because a 15-year-old Girl Scout had been doing some research and she realized there were a number of different agenda items that she felt that showed a liberal bias to the Girl Scouts. And so she started her own blog, and one of the things on her thing, according to her, is did you know the girl scouts printed materials, refer girls to Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups? So in the course of doing her research, she found the Media Matters thing and the rest is history. [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 12/28/11]

Fox & Friends Hosts Say It Is "Laughable" To Call Media Matters "Fair," Attack GSA's "Lefty Point Of View." From a second December 28 Fox & Friends segment:

CLAYTON MORRIS (CO-HOST): The book is called "MEdia" and it's handed out to those group of girls from I think the sixth grade up to eighth grade age range and it sends them to Media Matters, the website Media Matters, to get more information about lies, they say, or distortions that may be out there in the Media. Turns out, we know one of the most recent campaigns was going after Fox News Channel. It's also money coming from George Soros and others. So the notion that this is a--

DOOCY: Fair.

MORRIS: Nonpartisan or fair group is laughable.

DOOCY: Absolutely. I mean, it's fair if you're on the left and perhaps that is perhaps the two authors who wrote this particular book have a lefty point of view and maybe they do. But then for them to say, "hey, girls out there, if you want to know what's real, go to this lefty web site," that's just crazy. There is a story out there that apparently 15-year-old girl last year dropped out of the Girl Scouts because she looked at some of the policies and realized that in her estimation, the Girl Scouts in some ways embrace a lefty point of view, a liberal bias. Right-Wing Blogosphere Pick Up Attacks, Promotes Girl Scout Cookie Boycott

CNN Contributor And Big Journalism Editor Loesch Criticizes "Ongoing Moral Decline" Of GSA, Suggests Cookie Boycott. In a December 28 post, Loesch embedded a Fox & Friends segment and stated:

Think twice before buying Girl Scout cookies next year. Fox and Friends discussed how the Girl Scouts of America is now promoting Media Matters, in addition to its affiliation with Planned Parenthood (more). [...]

By promoting Media Matters for America as a credible website, the Girl Scouts are endorsing the site's unethical practices and stances.

The ongoing moral decline of the Girl Scouts has caused an exodus within its ranks and a decline in its formerly popular cookie sales. The absence of such a group has sparked the creation of others to take its place, most notable among them: the American Heritage Girls and the Frontier Girls.

Next year, when the green sashes come by your home and ask you to buy cookies to help support their organization, know why your answer will be "no, thanks." [BigJournalism.com, 12/28/11]

Jawa Report: "I Guess I've Bought My Last Box Of Thin Mints." On December 29, Jawa Report reported:

A publication for the Girl Scouts of the USA is promoting the blatantly biased website 'Media Matters' as a source to clear up media disinformation. For those who aren't familiar with 'Media Matters,' the website dedicates all it's resources to misinforming the public about conservative media, especially Fox News.

I guess I've bought my last box of Thin Mints. [The Jawa Report, 12/29/11]

Ace of Spades Highlights "Odd Inclusion" Of Media Matters By GSA. On December 28, Ace of Spades' Ace wrote:

Girl Scouts Now Promoting Media Matters As Reliable Site To Clear Up "Misinformation"

The long march through the institutions.

Media Matters? Honestly?

In 2010, the Girl Scouts of the USA published a book called "MEdia." The publication, designed for girls in grades six through eight, is a guide that apparently offers insight into how young people should process and understand the media messages surrounding them.

And if you read something that strikes you as dubious, don't just accept it uncritically; make sure you check out an unbiased, straight-shooting source. [...]

The Girl Scouts are aware of this odd inclusion, but are apparently re-printing the book for further distribution -- Media Matters still cited as a legitimate source. [Ace of Spades, 12/28/11, emphasis original]

GSA Announces They Will Remove MMFA Reference In Face Of "Controversy"

Girl Scouts Statement: "Upcoming Reprints" Of Book "Will Not Include Links To Media Matters." On December 28, right-wing website The Daily Caller reported:

In a statement to The Daily Caller, Girl Scouts of the USA confirmed on Wednesday that its literature will no longer refer scouts to Media Matters For America as a source of information to balance bias in news reporting.

"Girl Scouts constantly reviews our materials based on feedback and suggestions we receive from our members and we update our materials on a regular basis," said the statement. "As a result of this process, upcoming reprints of journeys materials will not include links to Media Matters."

The book in question, titled "MEdia," currently advises Girl Scouts that "Media Matters for America (http://mediamatters.org) gets the word out about media misinformation." [Daily Caller, 12/28/11]

Fox News Doubles Down With Nearly 12 Minutes Attacking GSA's "Liberal Ideology"

Fox & Friends Hosts "Former Girl Scout" To Attack Media Matters Reference As Example Of "Liberal Ideology" Of Girl Scouts. During the December 29 edition of Fox & Friends, the hosts interviewed Sydney Volansky, the former Girl Scout and co-editor of the website Speak Now: Girl Scouts referenced in The Blaze:

DOOCY: I understand your family and some other families started noticing kind of what you would feel is a liberal agenda in the national Girl Scouts organization, and when you saw that book, it was suggesting if you want to know what's really going on in the media, go to Media Matters, which is clearly a left blog, you said that's just not going to stand, right?

VOLANSKY: Yes. My sister and I started a website to help inform families of the more leftward leanings of Girl Scouts because they promise to be neutral politically and about certain social issues, but when you examine the women they promote and the websites and books that they refer girls to, there is a clear liberal ideology, like with the Media Matters site. [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 12/29/11]

Fox & Friends Amplifies Volansky's Attacks On GSA's Alleged "Lack Of Neutrality," "Real Motives," Ties To Planned Parenthood. From the Fox & Friends interview with Volansky:

CAMEROTA: And you were a Girl Scout for eight years, you were a proud Girl Scout.  You say it was a huge part of your life. But then because you started seeing these incidents of lack of neutrality you started the website called speaknowgirlscouts.com. What are you trying to accomplish with that?

VOLANSKY: With Speak Now: girl scouts, we are just trying to spread awareness to families because we were so deceived for eight years we were in Girl Scouts. We didn't realize that Girl Scouts was promoting such a liberal ideology.  And so we really just want to help families to understand Girl Scouts' real motives and what they are really promoting.

DOOCY: In particular at the national level, we've got a sound bite from 2004, the woman who runs the Girl Scouts, Kathy Cloninger, and here she talks about a special relationship between the national Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood.

CLONINGER (VIDEO CLIP): We have relationships with our church communities, with YWCAs and with Planned Parenthood organizations across the country to bring information-based sex education programs to girls.

DOOCY: One of our producers was told that she made a misstatement back then and that there is no relationship between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood. Do you believe that to be true?

VOLANSKY: I don't believe that is true. For one thing that statement has never been formally retracted. So that kind of makes you wonder why she doesn't just say, "Oh, I made a mistake, let me retract that" instead of just having everyone else says it but she never comes out with that, so that's one thing. But also, you look at the sites they are promoting, they send girls to abortion-advocacy websites which will in turn send them to Planned Parenthood, and several years ago they actually had a direct link where they were sending girls directly to Planned Parenthood in a badge called "On Your Own." [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 12/29/11]

Fox & Friends Re-airs Portion Of Volansky Interview, Says She's Exposing "Liberal Agenda" Of GSA. In a second December 29 segment, after re-airing a portion of the Volansky interview, Doocy said:

She got out of the Scouts a while back and then she's been compiling a list of what looks like the liberal agenda of the national Girl Scouts and that's when they found the Media Matters thing. When asked about why is Media Matters, which is clearly a lefty blog, George Soros-funded, left-leaning agenda wise blog, supposed to be the arbiter of media items, a spokesperson for the Girl Scouts of America said, "Girl Scouts constantly reviews our materials based on feedback and suggestions we receive from our members and we update our materials on a regular basis. As a result of the process, upcoming reprints of journeys" - that's the  name of the publication - "the materials will not include links to Media Matters." However, our young former Scout did say that despite the fact that the Girl Scouts say we're not going to have that, she had friends go out and try to get that book and as it turns out, Media Matters is still in the book, although the Girl Scouts have promised to remove it from future publications.

Doocy also again highlighted GSA's supposed relationship with Planned Parenthood. [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 12/29/11]

The Five Hosts Call Girl Scouts Book "Indoctrination," Say Media Matters Is A "Biased Left Wing Liberal Rag." From a discussion of the GSA book on the December 29 edition of The Five:

KIMBERLY GUILFOYLE: This is improper, it's indoctrination. It's ridiculous. I don't know what's going on with them. They are trying to pollute minds of young girls. And I'm glad they've been called out on it.

ANDREA TANTAROS: What's Media Matters?

GUILFOYLE: Irrelevant.

TANTAROS: I've never heard of them. [...]

ERIC BOLLING: I have a son but I wouldn't want my daughter to be learning about where to go for media training and media correctness to Media Matters, one of the most biased left wing liberal rags on the planet. So, maybe they should have vetted it a little bit better before they put the manual up - -

TANTAROS: I never heard of them. I don't even know what they are.

GREG GUTFELD: You know, I think this is all part of a merit badge for social justice. Have you seen that? No? All right. Well, if Media Matters had a cookie - I was thinking if Media Matters had a cookie, it would be called bitter nut.

BOLLING: And if they had a drink, it would be called Kool-Aid. [Fox News, The Five, 12/29/11]

Wallace Highlights Report On Special Report. From the December 29 edition of Fox News' Special Report:

CHRIS WALLACE (GUEST HOST): The Girl Scouts say they will no longer recommend the liberal website Media Matters as a good source for fact checking suspected media bias. The Scouts book "MEdia" includes a section called "Consider the Source" devoted to news and urban legends. Quote, "Media Matters for America gets the world out about media misinformation." But industry blog Mediaite says Media Matters has a, quote, "far left bent that is both transparent and indisputable." [Fox News, Special Report, 12/29/11]

Hm.... In all those wingnut attacks on Media Matters, not one instance of the bias they claim was presented. If you want to call someone a liar, wingnuts, it's helpful to point out the lie and prove it. Just sayin'.

My only quibble with your post, NCP, is that I don't really have a problem with bias, in itself. I think you could accurately say this site has a bias, as they focus on conservative misinformation, my problem is that the righties can never come up with any misinformation being presented here due to that bias.

I read through most of the items above, I saw "lefty" and "agenda" and "bias" and "Soros", but nothing to back up the claims of misinformation or indoctrination by this site.

Bias is just another word, like "entitlements", that the wingnuts have demonized. I wouldn't have any problem with the right wing bias of Fox, am radio, or righty websites, if they could manage to do it without lying.

And that's where the game sits. MMFA busts these clowns all the time, getting their facts wrong, omitting info, screwing up graphics, outright lying... and the only thing they can come back with is " MMFA has a different viewpoint and Soros!".

When I first started following MMFA the wingnuts around me based their hate for it on "Hilary Clinton supports it." or "Hilary Clinton started it." Not once could I get any proof of that or an explanation why that would be a bad thing. In their minds any connection at all to Hilary made it evil. Then it became about Soros being connected to it that makes it evil. Crazy! I tell ya crazy!!

Like you pointed out, they never prove where MMFA is wrong in any of their accusation. The best they can do is throw out insults and those catchy words or names that the wingnuts associate with bad. And they are confident that the wingnuts don't ever question what they are being fed by the idiots they trust.

That was pretty funny, the wingnuts would claim that it was obvious that this site was fully controlled by [leading Democratic candidate at that moment].

As soon as the polls changed, they'd jump right from Hillary-run to Obama-run website, and call anybody lemmings who wasn't following their ever-changing reality.

I also saw, in the comments of the Mediaite thread linked to, one of the documented lies MMFA is charged with; denying being Soros-funded. That is, after he eventually donated money to the site that exposed his attackers, the wingnuts believed that proved he was behind it all along.

Happy New Year, Bronwyn, and count your blessings for not having one of those defective right wing brains installed in yer skull. That would make you a normal quad-driving, man-spanking, donut-luvving Real American !

My favorite is how they spent so much time attacking George Soros, lying about him and his entire life. They accused him of being behind everything, behind every tree. So in the face of all this nonstop, mean and wrong attacking, George Soros decided that he should donate to the group that is helping defend him against the lies and the hate: Media Matters.

Which the rightwingers then used to proclaim the "truth" of their idea, that Soros has been secretly giving money to Media Matters and others all this time.

Theres a couple flaws in that mode of thought. Like, how it didnt prove anything, because I dont think "Donation to" is synonymous with "owning", and why would he now donate publicly if he already privately controlled it with zero evidence?

It really makes you think about the people we are dealing with...

I never understood why it was evil, nefarious, or insidious for a person to donate to a cause they agree with?

Wingnuts worship on the altar of a media empire run by a billionaire who regularly donates to GOP campaigns whose news network then endorse. Unethical as that may be, it's not illegal, but you'll hear nary a peep from the wingnuts about this.

Not to mention the willful ignorance or outright deception involved in conflating "donate to" with "control."

Of course, Wallace Le Petite --- by cherry-picking --- makes the quote sound like a condemnation of MMFA. The actual quote
          : Frances Martel, Mediaite - Dec. 28, 2011

Media Matters itself doesn't appear to have much of any role in this ordeal[?], nor should the outrage really fall upon their [sic] shoulders no matter how tempting some on the right may find taking shots at them. They [sic] are fully entitled to be the operation they are: a media commentary site with a far-left bent [?] so transparent and indisputable that it is widely considered a badge of honor in conservative circles to find oneself in their crosshairs.
Hear that, Chrissy? A badge of honor and a perfect accompaniment to the portrait you keep in your oak-panel study, right above the My Little Pony collection.

FWIW, in the last sentence above-quoted Mediaite, following the MSM tradition of false equivalency, still makes MMFA sound like a lefty version of the screwball Blaze. Feel free to add your own comment to the piece.

Do you notice the same trend as I do in those comments? The liberals talk about what people actually do, and the righties talk about what they imagine people do.

I hadn't checked into fantasyland lately, so I watched a bit of Fox today. This morning ( I think Cavuto's show) there was a panel of nutjobs playing Armageddon-Time. Everybody's taxes are going up tonight, light bulbs as we know them will be banned ( screen text: "Green Bulb Threat!"), and housing prices have spiked slightly, but will only really recover once Obama is out of the White House.

I thank the FSM that I don't have to live in that perpetual nightmare of delusion, hate, fear, panic and paranoia that the typical wingnut seems to thrive in.

I flipped the Krazy Channel on again a bit ago, to see an extended interview with (monologue by) Rush Limbaugh. He rambled on about imaginary liberals who want to divide all of the money in the world equally between every human, about deliberate deaths in Mexico to get rid of the 2nd amendment, and some imagined political correctness among the Republican establishment that has prevented GOPpers from being able to voice any honest criticism of the president.

The highlight of that last rant was Lispy's very serious claim about Repubs being too nice; " If we put straitjackets on, we lose!".

He could have said " tie our hands behind our backs", or "pull our punches", but he went with straitjacket. Very fitting, right after he was urging his fellow wingnuts not to forget about Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers. Lispy himself acknowledged that the more reasonable Repubs want to restrain the nuts from hurting themselves or others.

Happy New year, E, hope it's a great one.

Yah, if we were to take away the strawmen with liberal labels from them...it'd be a lot quieter. Perhaps a rise in the number of constipation suffer's.

If there are very many nice republicans left, I doubt if they are listening to Limbic. Most are probably probably as disconnected from the public political debate as many demoncrats are.

I don't think the rightwing crazy is going back into the box anytime soon. There is so much money, needing so many propagandists, to go into the public corporate debate. This all seems to produce a rather second class mythology.

I'm hoping to finaly get a new used car shortly. I'm featured artist in January at the co-op I'm part of. As its a thirty mile round trip, and I'm dispalying 3D & 2D works, a new used car will be very useful.

2011 set a pretty high bar for corporate news crazyness. I'm of the opinion that, with the campaigns actually starting now, they will set a new standard of crazy this year. I'm awaiting accusations that we're really working with the Venusians, or the Martians.

A good year to you and the rest of this rightwing rhetoric wrecking crew as well. Such sanity as I've managed to retain this year is all your responsibility.

Oh, I have no doubt that there are some people out there that use food stamps while someone in their immediate family wears expensive sneakers. What I don't believe is that the highly paid right wing pundit does their own shopping, and if they do that they would be in the same store with people on some form of financial assistance.

I'm curiuous if one of the leaders of my daughters Girl Scout troop will either talk about or possibly support the cookie sale boycott. She is a Scott Walker supporter (R- Gov'na Wisconsin) and from what I can tell, everything else republican/Fox News. If she does speak out for it, I personally think at that point she has no right being a troop leader as she is putting her personal political belief ahead of the interest of the girls in the troop.

I have kids in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. I honestly haven't see a huge difference in ideologies presented at the meetings, which are fore the most part non-political. Both do the Pledge of Allegiance for what that's worth.

If I had daughters, I think I would have no problem with them getting information about MMFA or Planned Parenthood. I love how the anti-choice crowd always describes PP as "pro-abortion".

It's been many years, but I've been in PP with girlfriends when I was younger. I remember them providing info, health care, birth control, and also providing the option of terminating a pregnancy.

The option. Personal responsibility, freedom of choice, that kind of thing. I'm sure the wingnuts think their demands to withhold information and services, to prevent women from having a choice, is the real freedom.

PP is a great, low cost provider of vital services to which many young women wouldn't have access to otherwise. Trying to defund them or demonize them only puts women's lives in peril. I used them when I was young and had very limited resources.

I swear these noobs have no love for women at all. The GS cookie sales proghram is THE largest girl powered enterprise in the US. And they want to boycott THAT all because they have truck with the obvious scholarship of this site? Must mean MMFA is doing something right.

FOX is definitely spreading the word about MMFA. Christmas dinner, my dad started in on how Obama hasn't done anything but make the economy worse. When I pointed out that we'd seen 22 consecutive months of positive job growth, he asked, "where'd you hear that? That loony liberal media monster site?" When I told him no, the Bureau of Labor Statistics he responded, "What a load of hogwash. You liberals are all alike."

My dad is the same way. I brought up how under Bush the debt ceiling was raised 7 times, told me to bring him proof. Sent him 7 links to the transcripts for the Congressional meetings that raised them. He said "this doesn't prove anything".

He complained how so many people are losing their jobs still. I showed him the most recent (it was like back in October) Bureau of Labor statistics, and pointed out that job growth in the private sector was growing, but was being somewhat offset by the layoff's in the public sector. Told me this was "made up".

The only positive thing is that he doesn't see Fox as a news channel, more of an opinion channel, and almost never watches it, at least when I'm around.

I love my family, warts and all. My dad is in his late 70s, my mom in her early 70s. What they give me is a different (and helpful) view of the typical right wing believer. It's a lot harder to fall into the trap of demonizing people based on political beliefs when you know them well.

My dad -- he'd give you the shirt off his back. He doesn't mind paying taxes -- in fact, he thinks it's part of his civic duty. He's been a union man most of his life, served proudly in the Army -- but never glorified war. He and his Army buddies still get together several times a year, families and all.

He despises the president -- but he doesn't think much more highly of any of the right wing crop either. They're all corrupt, in his eyes, and the biggest problem with liberals like me is that we just don't understand that no one goes into politics with good intentions. If they tell you any different, they're blowing smoke up your butt.

      The Blaze (from above):
This story was originally brought to us by Christy Volanski, a concerned parent and a former Girl Scouts leader. Her daughter, Sydney, a 15-year-old who served as a Girl Scout for eight years, left the organization in 2010 after she found that it embraces some controversial stances. Now, Sydney co-edits [the pink] "Speak Now: Girl Scouts Website," which provides plenty of other examples of what some may see as liberal bias.
Not quite true. It's anti-Choice website.
      American Independent - March 16, 2011
Speak Now: Girl Scouts is the product of two Texas-based teen sisters, Tess and Sydney Volanski [fruit of the loins of Christy Volanski - see above], who claim to have recently quit the Girl Scouts after eight years because they discovered the organization has a "pro-abortion mindset." ["Recently" means March 2010.]
      ....
The Volanskis claim the Girl Scouts USA has an "anti-life, pro-abortion agenda." As evidence, they point to "controversial content" in various GSUSA printed materials, wherein the national Girl Scouts organization provides links and references to organizations such as the Women's Media Center, Media Matters for America ...
Sydney is not transgender. So no rumors please. Please.
      RH Reality Check - May 17, 2011
Christy [Volanski] has been bouncing from Pro-Catholic internet message boards to Facebook, and doing interviews with her daughter Sydney on the radio as early as the beginning of April. Prior to that, she was pushing her anti-Girl Scouts agenda on her own, on other Christian radio shows. And even before that, way back in January, Christy was "contacting Abby to see if she can help us with more facts linking PP [Planned Parenthood] to GS. May God bless her for her amazing courage!" according to "Make The Girl Scouts Clean Again," a facebook page she was highly active in discussions on.
      OCD?
Regardless, Volanski is a definitely person with way, way too much spare time on her hands. (Christy, it's 10 p.m. Do you know where your spawnage are?)

Pro-Choice and Planned Parenthood appear to be the actual targets in all this. Whining about MMFA and the GSA is just a means to an end.

So critical thinking and fact-checking makes you liberal now? Jeez, is there anything that doesn't?

Even worse, making kids think critically about what they learn and are told? My God, it's almost like public education and moral lessons from wholesome American traditions are actually working on some children!

For how meaningless MMFA is supposed to be, FOX News offers services of a PR firm doing volunteer work for them. If the story had ended with just the MMFA stuff, FOX could have called it a "win", but apparently someone on staff has a personal vendetta against the Girl Scouts and will run to the ends of the earth with this. I'm not even sure what they're trying to accomplish, but stuff like this won't work to defame in any way.

        You want to see worse?

I looked up an off hand comment because it sounded plausible to me. Here is the text that triggered my search,

A quick google search found this,

        Just Us-Social Justice Program
        http://www.girlscoutsaz.org/index.php/just-us-social-justice-program

Look at the program he is making fun of,

"Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council is committed to providing all girls with opportunities that promote self-reliance, respect for others, a sense of belonging and leadership skills. An important way in which this is accomplished is through the Just Us-Social Justice programs.

These are prevention and early-intervention programs aimed at breaking the intergenerational cycle of abuse, poverty and crime some girls face on a daily basis.

These programs offer a range of free services to girls residing in low-income neighborhoods, housing projects, homeless shelters and girls involved in the juvenile justice and corrections systems."

What kind of man makes fun of that?

As a former teacher I applaud GSUSA for pointing its members to Media Matters as an example of fact checking biased stories.

The rigour demonstrated by MMfA is an example to all young people of the importance of critical research skills. The fact that MMfA goes to primary sources in its quest for facts sets the standard that should be aspired to by all citizens.

The Girl Scouts' Movement should hold its collective heads high, proud in the knowledge that, in an environment where fabricated calumnies are routinely circulated in the assorted media, they have made the effort to educate their membership on how to check the veracity of the pile of stuff that is shoved in their faces.

          You are a LIAR

Ah yes the famous words of KAB. Everyone that has a diffrent opinion than YOU is a liar.

Why don't you call Obama a liar? Several of you Media Morons claimed that Obama promised to VETO the NDAA bill because of the indefinite detention and I told you he was lying and that his administration had asked for the language to be changed to INCLUDE American citizens and even linked to a Democrat senator that gave testimony that the Obama administration asked for the change and you called me a liar and other names, well guess what dip sh!t he just signed the NDAA bill just like I said he would.

You left wingers are just to stupid to admit that the Obama administration is just as corrupt and incompetent as the Bush administration and just because you have a Democrat president you will defend everything he does just like the right wingers defended Bush for everything he did. You people need to wake up to the fact that Democrat or Republican no longer matters because they are both equally corrupt and both equally in the back pockets of big corporations and big banks.

Poor alt. Still so stupid and getting stupider.

Lets see if I can make this simple enough for your simple mind. That word partisan wasnt picked randomly. See brainwashed moron that panzy is he is repeating the spin he was told to take about how MMFA shouldnt be tax exempt because they are PARTISAN. A word that has a specific meaning in the context of tax exemption. That they are advocating for either specific candidates or political party. DIRECTLY. They do not do this. Panzy is lying. He knows he is lying. We know he is lying. You are the only one here too STUPID to understand what is going on. I pity you but it looks like higher brain function just isnt in your future

No problem Obama is a liar. He said he was going to veto this horrific legislation, he SHOULD have vetoed it he is a LIAR for saying he would then not doing so. Hopefully the ACLU will take it to the SC and get rid of it. I am once again gravely disappointed at this President.

It is always funny when someone as incredibly stupid as you and someone like you so brainwashed and programmed that you would embarass sheep, that you DO embarass lemmings tell us how stupid WE are. I have caught you in several lies, I have seen you claim things so incredibly stupid no rational adult could take them seriously. You have no credibility on any issue concerning thought. You are incapable of it. You are the epitome of mindless moronic, punk. You have the IQ of celery on your best day.

Obams has disappointed me many times. I wish there were a better alternative out there. You are just a brainwashed incredibly stupid propaganda parrot saying he is as bad and corrupt as Bush. When he LIES us into invading another country and puts us at war with them for a decade, when he craters the entire worlds economy, when he exposed the identity of an undercover CIA agent in an act of political pique get back to me. Until then yhou are just a child. A particularly stupid and mindless child.

You need to wake up to the fact that you are FAR too stupid to tell us anything we dont already know. Dems are marginally better than the GOP on some issues. This is a business run society, has been since at least the Civil war. We know that. I left the Democratic Party long ago. I BARELY support them over the GOP because those differences, small as they are mean REAL things to people on the margins and I care about them. Those marginal differences are the difference between Libya, which I am still uncomfortable about and Iraq which was an outright war crime. When Obama is torturing people get back to me about how he is just as bad as Bush

You are very very stupid and you virtually never know what you are talking about. This makes you a useful minion for people so much smarter than you. They feed you nonsense then you spew it like the well trained moron you are. You are just disgusting and a truely worthless human being

In fact GOD but you are stupid. I DID show where panzy lied. He is a liar and apparantly so are you. He called this site partisan, that was a lie. One he has been corrected on when the ISSUE was the tax exempt status. He didnt even try to counter the argument then, since it really isnt that subjective, he just came back and told the same lie again. It is almost embarassing I have to explain such simple concepts to you and you are STILL too stupid to understand them. So stuff it up your tarhole you ignorant brainwashed punk.

My GOD you keep getting even stupider. Of COURSE they have a bias. One they freely admit. I admitted this in the first post. Of COURSE I know how biased they are. alt: Obama isn't posting here.

People are allowed to hold their own opinions. What they aren't allowed to hold is their own facts. Facts are these fun little things that don't require a partisan slant to be true. They are true by definition.

If someone tells something that's untrue, then that's a falsehood. Telling something intentionally untrue, that's a lie. It has nothing to do with a "different opinion" because not all opinions are valid. I cannot be of the opinion that poison is not harmful to consume. That opinion is wrong. I would be lying if I said that poison was not harmful.

panzer is saying things that he KNOWS is false. Or, if he doesn't know it to be false, he is a complete incompetent. I think kab was giving panzer the benefit of the doubt and was not going to call him a complete idiot.

I do not care for that indefinite detention either, but I HAVE been in prison and actually have something to fear about such an arbitrary law. I think Obama dropped the ball, feel better? This site isn't about Bush, Obama, Clinton or Reagan, it is about right wing media and how they corrupt STUPID PEOPLE with opinion serving as fact, OK? I have issues with every President that has served, but I will not dogpile Mr. Obama, not because he is perfect, but because the moron contingent in this country is dangerous and I will not add to the hate fest. You may be shocked by this alt, but there are plenty of us on the left who aren't at all happy about the NDAA bill being signed. I'm disgusted by Congress' practice of "christmas tree'ing" poison pill amendments on the back of important and necessary legislation.

One MAJOR difference between the sides at the moment: the left brings facts, figures and statistics to make their claims; the right brings fear, hyperbole and BS to the table. Another one is that I can't think of one democratic president who invaded the wrong country. Not one. Go on living in your fantasy world of false equivalence.

Right wingers who are plugged into the right wing echo chamber that is Fox News, AM Radio, and the propped up author circuit have a hard time thinking beyond a simple two sided dichotomy of absolutes.

They believe that everything political operates on this simple straight line axis, and the absolute points are defined by the right wing think tanks.

Right now, the largest single POLITICAL goal of the entire republican party and conservative movement is destroying President Obama, so the unthinking followers equate any attack or criticism of anything or anyone they support as unwavering support for President Obama.

I know, it's weird to imagine, but is there any other explanation?

Why do all debates end in a child-like insistence that anyone they disagree with is "in the tank" for Obama regardless of the topic? Why do they never seem to be able remember any criticism or dissatisfaction with the current president expressed by anyone on the political left no matter how many times it's pointed out to them?

Just watch, these same right wingers trying to derail this discussion into the ten millionth referendum on President Obama will next time begin with the exact same simple two sided paradigm, insisting again that no liberal ever criticizes Obama.

The NDAA does not really give or take away powers that the Executive Branch doesn't already have and have had since around 2001.

It's strange that the Republicans are attacking it now but pushed for it while Bush was in office.

I've heard these people on Fox complain about MMfA a lot, but the one thing I've never heard in all their rambling statement is any refudation of what MMfA posts. They claim it's all misinformation, but have never once... let me say that again... not once have they ever proven MMfA was wrong, lying or misleading. It's simple, really. They just don't like having their lies and invective pointed out to others.

And by the way, Foxbots, how's that whole campaign to get MMfA's tax-exempt status revoked going?

MMFA is much more unbiased and factual than the MRC is. No doubt about that. It is interesting they all talk about the MMFA bias being left, but MMFA's about page says conservative misinformation, so it's not like they are hiding anything. And of course, once more, all the complaints, but not one example of where MMFA is wrong.

Politifact and factcheck.org have shown that there's no other option. If you want to teach that true is good, you have to point to unabashed liberals. If teaching that true is good costs millions of dollars, you either expose that deplorable state of affairs now or cordon off truth.

Anything anxious to stay nonpartisan ends up constricted more and more. If you want anything to do with science, economics, sociology, justice, media, or history, you have to watch yourself more and more closely to avoid the parts that republicans have lied about.

            Don't think we're disagreeing.

Also, right now it's unimportant if the left's mistakes go uncovered because the dominant fact of our politics is the dearth of value and sanity on the right, and that dominant fact is not covered in traditional news sources. When the dominant fact gets proper coverage, only then is it appropriate to cover smaller facts.

Why? The only groups that tell the truth these days are unabashedly liberal. Try to factcheck Media Matters and you'll inevitably wind up confirming their articles. Do the same with any of the rightwing media, and the opposite will prove true. The fact is, liberals and their organizations tend to debate with facts and logic, and wingnuts tend to debate with fear, religion, and lies.

"A Form Of Misinformation, Bias -- Potentially Even Indoctrination"

For Beck, two out of three ain't bad. It's outstanding.

Media Matters most assuredly is biased. But when you realize that biased and correct is a million times better than neutral and wrong, all qualms go away.

Media Matters also indoctrinates. Anyone who hears and acknowledges truth will leave the republican party.

The only attack the right has left is charges of partisanship and bias. But since objectivity is now a useless fiction, that attack has no content.

There is so much wrong idiocy in nearly every news source that concerns about bias are like washing dishes while your house burns down around you.

I remember watching an anti-war protest on C-SPAN during the Bush Administration. Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of protestors filling the streets for over a mile. Then you had this small enclave of maybe 10 people protesting the protest (heretofore: "pro-war protestors").

I watched this protest live for almost a half hour and then I flipped over to Fox News. I waited on Fox for about 10 minutes and they didn't even mention the protest. I flipped over to the other stations. I found one....that's right, ONE... report on the protests. They interviewed one anti-war protestor while not showing the size of the crowd passing behind him. Then they interviewed all 10 pro-war protestors as a group.

They never showed the size of the protest.

Every writer, every thinker brings their own baggage to every situation this is very often referred to as bias. This is something that every reader and every listener should take into account.

For the very same reason that we all have that baggage it is important to seek out primary sources. Thorough research such as that routinely undertaken by MMfA is the greatest safeguard of the truth.

Whilst we can all argue the validity of our opinions the facts upon which they are based are the same whatever your ideology. Combatting outright lies and misrepresentations is an important public function and can only serve to improve public discourse. It is a sorry comment on the U.S. polity when this most useful of functions is debased.

      ...the whole 'Judge not' thingy.

Seen on Facebook this morning, posted by an old schoolmate; Foxnation item about Jimmy Carter sending a condolence letter to the son of Kim Jong Il.

I'm the first person to take digs at politicians for using their faith as a prop, talking about Christian values while seeming completely unfamiliar with Christs's words, but talk about 'walking the walk', Carter does it.

Of course, it's not going over well with the TRue Xtian FoxBots, who know the right thing would have been to send a quick note saying ' F-U your dad's dead !'"

      And,

"……the giddy excitement some take in death is just creepy."

Then here comes heehee of Jong II "...he has feelings like anyone else." And, "...not taunting bereaved relatives."

      http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/201112220024

This is what PV Andy said about my dad a few weeks ago: "I hope his father, if he was any kind of man, is dead.". At least this is a bit better than, "F-U your dad's dead".

You leftists will never be able to live by any principled standards of fairness. Something is missing in your brains. This is why I seldom criticize you - it's not really your fault that you have mental issues.

Happy 2012! What say you all try to be a little more NORMAL this year?

        donutPUNK

I am glad you are back to slap around some. I am in the mood for a free clown show and there are none as amusing as your pathetic attempts at being clever. Of course that is when you are not delving into your disturbing sexual deviancy about spanking grown men and pretending they are two year olds or not being able to keep your pants on around your grandchildren. Lets leave those in your anxiety closet shall we?

It is hilarious seeing YOU call someone ELSE a pervert though. I expect the FBI to find you and lock you up any day now.

Now now dont be such a liar. No one is forcing you to respond to anything. We appreciate you sharing your incredible stupidity with us so we can laugh at you but we arent FORCING you to display the stunning, blazing, white hot stupidity that you so define, you just like to do it and we love laughing at morons as stupid as you.

You are still whining about this? For a punk as rude, insulting, pathetic, and crude as you are you sure have a thin skin. I am sorry that you are too stupid to read the English language. Not suprised of course, you really are very stupid but it is a sorry thing. That is not an insult to your father. It is pointing out that any DECENT human being would be ashamed to be associated with a mentally defective, morally retarded pool of sewage like you. He was hoping your father was spared from such indignity and shame that you would inevitably bring upon him. He was being nice.

You are too stupid and morally retarded to even know what fairness or principles are. You spent an entire post insulting us AND snivelling like the punk you are about an insult given you weeks ago. You are also a LIAR you criticize us all the time. Just not in any effective way. Mostly you project your inadequacies in our direction and we point at you and laugh. You have mental defects so obvious that it really precludes you as being any judge about anyone elses mental acuity.

You are too stupid, sexually perverted, and morally retarded to even be TALKING about normal. Keep a look out for the FBI. Your day will come. Then you can tell your cellmates about how normal you are

I'm not familiar with the circumstances here, but I had to assume that was the meaning. It goes back to what I've said before about establishing patterns of behavior. I've never seen Andy post anything within miles of that level of disrespect. Even if he did do something so inconsistent with his character, I would have to believe he would apologize quickly and profusely.

So Andy gets the benefit of the doubt, because his pattern of behavior merits it. And since everyone else is fully capable of recognizing that pattern, I have to believe that ILD is being intellectually dishonest, which happens to fit into his established pattern of behavior.

          "I am sorry..."

I agree. You people are sorry sicko freaks kabnuts.

"Of course that is when you are not delving into your disturbing sexual deviancy about spanking grown men and pretending they are two year olds or not being able to keep your pants on around your grandchildren."

You are predictably taking my comments out of context. You have been trained well by the staff of MMfA. These out of context remarks are a sure sign of lacking valid refutable comments. I've come to expect this kind of claptrap from the Left.

"He was hoping your father was spared from such indignity and shame that you would inevitably bring upon him. He was being nice"

Only twisted and warped minds would ever interpret "I hope his father, if he was any kind of man, is dead" as "being nice" to me."

"Keep a look out for the FBI. Your day will come."

I sure hope so. I'd like to see both you and Andy jailed for your despicable sexual perverted comments here.

BTW, You and Andy need to get your minds out of the gutter kabnuts? You two obviously have pedophiliac characteristics.

You are a LIAR. I didnt take that comment out of context in any way. You told a grown man here you wanted to spank him like he was a two year old. You said that exactly. Again you are a LIAR. MMFA doesnt take things out of context that is just the sort of lie you LIKE to tell because you get sheer joy from being a liar.

You are a pathetic, disgusting, depraved and perverte pool of sewage donutpunk. You always have been and you always will be.

GOD you are stupid. No one said he was being nice to you. Why WOULD he be nice to you the way you constantly insult US. YOU claimed he was smearing your father. That is a lie. You lie a lot. He was insulting you and overall was being nice. Just not to YOU. He was assuming your father was a good man and he was hoping he would be spared the shame you would inevitably bring him. That was nice. Not to YOU since you dont deserve nice.

You are so deseprate ignorant and sad. You are such a pathetic punk. I have said nothing illegal. I have only speculated that with your perverted sexual deviancy that you profess on this site they MAY be interested in what you DO, not what you say. What you say is just a huge pile of stupid.

You are a LIAR. Also you tell so MANY lies no one takes anything you say seriously. I am disturbed at this newest bit of obvious projection from you. I have never talked about wanting to spank a grown man while pretending he was a two year old. That was YOU. I never talked about how I couldnt keep my pants on around my grandchildren. THAT was you too. You are a very disturbed human being get help before you act on your sick and twisted fantasies involving children.

Like neutrality, civility is worthless next to truth.

For example, if a right winger is racist, that right winger should be attacked for being factually wrong. When that's done, the racism will take care of itself.

And if a left winger insults your family (of course he didn't, but even so), you should attack the left-winger on facts and the rest will take care of itself. It's your problem that you can't do that, since you're on the wrong side of all issues.

I give up ilovedonutz, do you want to carry on last years squabbles, or what? Was I out of line for noticing the lack of respect ON THE DAY HE DIED? (or when we found out actually) I have a memory and without citing chapter and verse, I believe that you told us that your father passed away long ago, sorry for your loss but do you have any intention of letting go of that apparently traumatic occurrence? A lot of folks our age have lost parents ild, I am sure when someone plays the dozens on you, it has probably happened before, and I will bet you were intentionally aggravating the sh!t of someone then also. I hadn't heard from you forever, and the first post I see from you has you crying about some half baked crap and you feel it necessary to use MY handle to drum up some negativity to kab. Get over it big man, or address me personally, I'll post my freaking number. You cannot possibly intend to spend every post here telling on people, grow up. My dad died in the house while I was there, and I was unable to resuscitate him, don't tell me your sad story anymore, everyone knows you had your feelings hurt, do you want everyone here to apologize to you every time you show up to call us morons? Quit being a dipsh!t troll and you may not get abused. heehee: the only reason I mentioned this quote from Andy is because he agreed with Carter that Jong II (dictator whose father killed millions) deserves some "respect" while he disrepects conservatives here all the time .

"...use MY handle to drum up some negativity to kab. Get over it big man, or address me personally, I'll post my freaking number. You cannot possibly intend to spend every post here telling on people, grow up."

Heehee in the same post, doing exactly what he blasted me for - writing about a third person (how did he put it? Oh yeah, "and the first post I see from you has you crying about some half baked crap and you feel it necessary to use MY handle to drum up some negativity to kab". He also referenced an older post then turns around and blasts me for using an old post. I thought you were a little classier heehee but it looks like I was mistaken. Check this out from heehee "Some ass growth called 4teepee said some sh!t about my daughter who is good as gold and still alive and READ IT,"

And naturally there are a bunch of you saying I'm "whining" while you whine about me. That you don't see this is remarkable

See heehee, the way it works is if you blast somebody for xyz you should not turn around and do the same exact thing - especially in the SAME post! You lose credibility when you do this.

BTW, it sucks somebody talked trash about your daughter. A few weeks ago I posted a message here requesting family members be off limits here - just before Andy talked trash about my Dad. In fact, a lot of posters here agreed with Andy's speaking ill of my dad.

          Happy 2012.

      Which George Soros history?

The actual history with it's good and bad points, or the unhinged right wing attacks that call him a Nazi collaborator, accuse him of being part of a secret cabal of Zionist financiers plotting to overthrow world governments, or the charges that he alone bankrolls every liberal, democratic, and progressive website, candidate, and movement that has ever existed?

It's infuriating and fascinating to watch the Troglodytes pull the strings of the "Liberal Media". Even as they poison the public discourse with garbage like this, they have successfully planted the myth that Obama is somehow to blame for the partisan rancor which has paralyzed Washington.

The Troglodyte Governor of Iowa was on Morning Joe today, singing this well-rehearsed little song, peppering it with references to Obama's "lack of leadership" and other Heritage Foundation talking points about how Obama took George W. Bush's thriving economy and ran it into the ground.

Of course, none of the so-called "Journalists" at the table bothered to challenge him. Mika made a few feeble attempts, but the Honorable Hack simply ignored her.
