Gannett, AP claimed McCain opposes a constitutional amendment banning abortion -- but McCain said he supports it

In recent comparisons of Barack Obama's and John McCain's positions, Gannett News Service and the Associated Press claimed that McCain opposes a constitutional amendment banning abortion. However, McCain has previously asserted that he supports such an amendment, and McCain advisers have reportedly said that he would not try to change the Republican Party's platform on abortion, which in 2004 called for a constitutional ban on abortion.

On Fox News, Barnes and Kondracke failed to note McCain's shifting statements on abortion

While
discussing potential candidates for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, Fred Barnes and Morton Kondracke mentioned Sen. John
McCain's views on abortion
rights, but did not note his apparently inconsistent statements. Neither Barnes nor Kondracke mentioned that McCain told reporters in 1999 that he would "not support
repeal of Roe v. Wade" or that McCain later issued a "clarification" saying
he "would work toward its repeal."

A New York Times
article that noted Sen.
John McCain's recent statement that "he
thought Roe v. Wade ...
should be overturned" did not
mention that McCain
has voiced several inconsistent positions on Roe
v. Wade. The Times also wrote that McCain
"seemed to countenance
civil unions"; in fact, McCain
offered two apparently contradictory positions on civil unions.

O'Reilly falsely claimed that a pregnant woman's life could "never" be "in danger" from pregnancy complication

On his radio show, Bill O'Reilly falsely claimed that it "is never the case" that a "mother's life is in danger" during pregnancy because "you can always have a C-section and do those kinds of things." In fact, several potential pregnancy complications, such as an ectopic pregnancy, which is "the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the first trimester" or preeclampsia, which "affect[s] up to one in seven pregnant women" can threaten the life of a pregnant woman.

Coulter "in awe [sic] of the voters of South Carolina [sic]"

In addition to calling Al Gore a "total fag" on the July 27 edition of Hardball, Ann Coulter also falsely credited activists who oppose abortion rights with placing an abortion ban on the ballot in South Carolina. In fact, it was supporters of abortion rights in South Dakota who placed a measure on the November ballot that would allow voters to uphold or strike down a state law banning most abortions.

Matthews accused Sen. Clinton of taking "poll-tested path" and "trying to play it safe" on abortion

Playing a clip of a 2005 speech in which Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said abortion should be "safe, legal, and rare," Chris Matthews suggested that she was being disingenuous and accused her of "trying to play it safe" on the issue in order to follow the "same poll-tested path" in 2008 as previous Democratic presidential nominees during failed bids for the White House. But Matthews offered no support for his suggestion that Clinton's 2005 statement on abortion was disingenuous, nor did he mention that she used exactly those words in describing her views on abortion in 1999.

Beck: S.D. Native Americans "have found something that can be more profitable than casinos, and that's abortion clinics"

On his nationally syndicated radio program, Glenn Beck said of Native Americans who are considering circumventing a new South Dakota law banning nearly all abortions by opening an abortion clinic on an Indian reservation in the state: "Indians will have found something that can be more profitable than casinos, and that's abortion clinics. And then, look out, man -- exploiting everything illegal for profit."

During a conversation about the potential presidential candidacy of Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, MSNBC's Chris Matthews misrepresented the position of Shannon O'Brien, Romney's Democratic opponent in the 2002 gubernatorial election, on parental consent requirements for pregnant teenagers seeking an abortion.

L.A. Times, Matthews misrepresented Bush, McCain positions on S. Dakota abortion ban

An editorial in the Los Angeles Times misrepresented the position of President Bush on a South Dakota law banning all abortions except in cases in which a woman's life is threatened by a pregnancy. MSNBC host Chris Matthews also misstated Sen. John McCain's position on the bill.

WSJ mischaracterized Alito's expressed views on abortion rights

A Wall Street Journal article on the constitutionality of South Dakota's recently passed abortion ban stated that Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito "expressed skepticism about abortion rights while working for the Reagan administration." However, the suggestion that Alito merely "expressed skepticism" about abortion rights mischaracterizes his clearly articulated view that there is no constitutional right to abortion.
