CNN's Bash, Roberts, and Phillips ignored Hagee's comments linking Hurricane Katrina to gay pride parade

Reporting on a New Orleans campaign event at which Sen. John McCain's "carefully scripted imagery was interrupted by a voter's question about Pastor John Hagee," CNN's Dana Bash aired a clip of Hagee -- who has endorsed McCain -- saying of Hurricane Katrina, "What happened in New Orleans looked like the curse of God." But Bash did not air the portion of Hagee's comments in which he reaffirmed his previous assertion that Hurricane Katrina was at least in part the result of "sin" that Hagee identified as "a massive homosexual rally." CNN's John Roberts and Kyra Phillips similarly noted that Hagee said that "Katrina was God's punishment for sinful behavior in New Orleans" without mentioning that among the "sinful behavior" Hagee referenced was the gay pride parade.

CNN allowed Romney to "plug[]" McCain's "credentials on fiscal issues" without noting Romney's own previous attacks

Reports on CNN's American Morning and its Political Ticker blog quoted former Gov. Mitt Romney praising Sen. John McCain's "credentials on fiscal issues," but neither report noted that "questioning McCain's economic credentials was the centerpiece" of Romney's campaign during the Republican presidential primary in Florida.

Chetry falsely claimed Franken said Rove and Libby "should be executed for treason" -- then denied having claimed it

Interviewing Al Franken on CNN's American Morning, Kiran Chetry falsely claimed that Al Franken, in a 2005 appearance on David Letterman's show, "said some things about Karl Rove and Scooter Libby, saying they should be executed for treason." In fact, as Franken noted, he had said that "George H.W. Bush, the president's father, was the head of the CIA, and he has said that outing a CIA agent is treason. ... And so, basically, what it looks like is going to happen is that Libby and Karl Rove are going to be executed." Chetry then denied having said that Franken "advocated" executing Rove and Libby.

CNN, NY Times quote McCain attacking Obama over vote ratings, but don't report that McCain missed too many votes to draw score

CNN's Kiran Chetry aired and The New York Times quoted Sen. John McCain's statement that "[i]t's not an accident [Sen. Barack Obama] has, I think, according to the National Journal, the most liberal voting record in the United States Senate. I have one of the most conservative," but neither mentioned that the Journal's ratings did not include McCain because he "did not vote frequently enough in 2007 to draw a composite score."
CNN's Bash noted McCain said he'd oppose his own immigration bill -- but not his remark days earlier that as president, he'd sign it into law

On American Morning, Dana Bash asserted that Sen. John McCain made "a concession" to "conservatives" on the issue of "illegal immigration" during CNN's January 30 Republican presidential debate, when McCain said he would not, in Bash's words, "vote for his own legislation allowing citizenship" for undocumented immigrants if it came to a vote on the Senate floor. But Bash failed to note that just days earlier on Meet the Press, McCain had said he would sign that very legislation into law.

CNN's Bash and Snow omitted McCain "shift" on immigration when airing McCain quote that Romney "flip-flopped"

In separate reports, Dana Bash and Mary Snow aired a clip of Sen. John McCain saying of Mitt Romney, "He's consistently taken both sides of any major issue. He has consistently flip-flopped on every issue." However, neither noted that McCain himself has changed his position on immigration.

Kurtz: Clinton's Ground Zero ad is treading on Giuliani's "turf"

Discussing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's new television advertisement, Howard Kurtz began
an article:
"In a stark, black-and-white ad that pictures her in a mask at Ground
Zero, Hillary Rodham Clinton is treading on Rudy Giuliani's turf."
Similarly, on CNN's
American Morning, John Roberts said that Clinton's ad "really is a shot across Rudy Giuliani's bow
to say,
'You're not the only one who has a claim to 9-11 here.'
But is she going too far? Is she politicizing 9-11?" Roberts did not ask whether Giuliani, who has repeatedly discussed 9-11 in campaign settings,
is "going too far" or "politicizing 9-11."

Reporting on Sen. Jim Webb's proposal to "specify minimum periods between
deployment of units and members of the Armed Forces" deployed in
Iraq and Afghanistan, several media outlets
noted Sen. John McCain's criticism that the amendment is "unconstitutional"
without including comments from Webb or any other Democrat defending the

Wash. Post, CNN ignored McConnell's retraction on role of newly expanded FISA in German terror arrests

After reporting on National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell's claim that
the recently approved law expanding the government's ability to eavesdrop on
U.S. citizens contributed to
arrests in Germany, The Washington Post and CNN have not
subsequently reported that McConnell has since acknowledged that the newly
passed law did not factor into the German arrests.

TV news outlets focused on Clinton fundraiser Hsu but ignored Romney finance co-chair Fabian's indictment for fraud

In recent days, NBC, CNN, and Fox News have all aired reports or discussed the
case of Norman Hsu, who The Wall Street Journal
suggested may have funneled illegal campaign
contributions to Sen. Hillary Clinton. However, when Mitt Romney's national
finance committee co-chairman Alan Fabian was charged with mail fraud, money
laundering, bankruptcy fraud, perjury and obstruction of justice, the three
networks did not report or discuss it
during programs
available in the Nexis database.

While
discussing possible replacements for Alberto Gonzales, several CNN anchors and reporters cited DHS Secretary Michael
Chertoff's handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as a "potential
problem" but did not provide any details regarding Chertoff's mismanagement of
the disaster. Indeed, two congressional reports specifically identified numerous failures by Chertoff and DHS in overseeing the
government's response.

Citing Cheney praise of Edelman letter, CNN left out Gates' refutation of attack on Clinton

In a report on the "dispute" between the Bush administration and Senator Hillary
Rodham Clinton, CNN's John Roberts stated that during an interview Vice
President Cheney told Larry King that he "backed a Pentagon bureaucrat [Eric
Edelman] who has accused Clinton of helping the
enemy in Iraq." But Roberts did not note that
Edelman is a "former top aide" to Cheney, nor that, in contrast with Cheney,
Defense Secretary Gates responded to Clinton that the Pentagon in no way
"believe[s] that congressional oversight emboldens our
enemies."
